Kelly Woodhouse is no stranger to resilience. Burned on 75% of her body at just two years old, she has transformed a childhood marked by trauma and bullying into a life of purpose, strength, and inspiration.
Freddie Sayers interviews reporter and documentary filmmaker Leighton Woodhouse for an on-the-ground account of the LA protests that followed ICE immigration raids. Woodhouse was in the thick of it—witnessing firsthand the violence, the escalation, and the crumbling of the “peaceful protest” narrative that dominated mainstream coverage. In this in-depth interview, he describes what it felt like to stand in the middle of what at times resembled “pre-civil war” more than a political demonstration. What began as outrage over immigration enforcement quickly spiralled into something much more chaotic. Leighton details the street-level reality: smashed windows, street fires, armed standoffs, and moments where the rule of law appeared to vanish. He challenges the media portrayal of events, questions the motives of protest leaders, and unpacks the deeper constitutional implications of what unfolded. Were these protests truly peaceful? Who was escalating the violence—and why? At what point does protest cross into insurrection? Is this unrest contained to Los Angeles and California, or will it spread, and become something more? Stockholm duo Alex Zethson and Johan Jutterström's new album is a beautiful, minimal reflection on perfectionism and failure.Through an intense and intimate recording process that picks up the clack of saxophone valves, and the humming of piano strings, It Could/If I refuses to let anyone forget there are two flawed, imperfect humans behind the music. The album reaches into melancholy and uncanniness similar to MK Velsorf & Aase Nielsen's Opening Night, and meditates on how music is perfect while in the composer's mind, and instantly blemished when it is played. We talked to them below.

Are Second Chances for Everyone? How do you know when you're ready for a second chance? Tina Yeager is joined by bestselling author of over 40 books, Kimberly Woodhouse, for a heartfelt conversation about “Second Chances.” Together, they explore how grace, forgiveness, and God's unwavering love make second (and twentieth!) chances possible—whether in our careers, relationships, or faith journeys. Kimberly shares insights from her latest novel, An Unexpected Grace, reflecting on characters who need renewal and the real-life experiences that shaped her storytelling. Hear stories of perseverance through crisis, the importance of supportive relationships, and honest struggles with grief and wounded hearts. If you've ever wondered whether you're truly eligible for a new beginning or how to hold on when life gets tough, this episode will encourage you to embrace hope, healing, and the abundance of grace waiting for you. Tune in for wisdom, practical encouragement, and stories that prove it's never too late for a second chance—with God, with yourself, and with others. Are second chances available to us all, even if we feel like we've run out of “do-overs”? Kim's response was powerful—she believes there is NO limit on second chances. God's grace is infinite, no matter how many times we fall or feel unworthy. In her words, “He's still there to pick me up out of the mud puddle and say, I love you, my daughter.” Hanging On When Life Gets Tough Kimberley shared heartfelt stories from her own life, including her family's struggles and how thousands have reached out to ask, “How did you get through it?” Her advice? “Tie a knot in the bottom of that rope and just hang on.” Whether it's singing, worshiping, or relying on supportive friends, Kimberley reminds us that clinging to hope and faith—especially in our lowest moments—is essential. Practical Ways to Persevere When navigating trials, Kimberley emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with prayerful friends, spending extra time in God's word, and holding yourself accountable with a supportive faith community. Even when we're trying our best, we may still fail—but God's forgiveness stretches further than we can imagine. Stories that Heal Kimberley's recent novel, An Unexpected Grace, explores the complexities of second chances in relationships. Through characters who face grief, shattered dreams, and wounded hearts, she demonstrates that healing and reconciliation are possible, even after years of pain. Through fiction, Kimberley believes we're able to experience truth and healing in fresh, relatable ways. Encouragement for the Wounded Whether you're grieving, struggling with broken relationships, or feeling distant from your God-given purpose, Kimberley urges us to remember: “God is not going to fail us the same way other people have.” Taking that step of faith, even when trust feels impossible, can lead to unexpected wholeness. Kimberley's Word of Hope Kimberley closed with her life verse: James 1:2-4—“Consider it pure joy…whenever you face trials of many kinds.” She reminds us to look for joy even in tough seasons, trusting that God is shaping us along the way. A pyromaniac haunts Points of Origin.John Leonard Orr, a serial arsonist who was also a fire investigator, shambles through Will Stratton's excellent new album as a wayward grim reaper. But fire itself does not haunt Points of Origin. How could it when it's the blazing heart of the album? From the former conman forecasting his propane-fueled death to the eon-spanning “Red Crossed Star,” which charts thousands of years of crimes and flames carving California, fire is all matter and all that matters. Stratton's story telling slots between the dirtbag ponderings of Warron Zevon and Hannah Frances' rot filled meditations. His characters are lively, flawed, always running from themselves and the flames that threaten to take everything they hold dear. Song by song Stratton's remarkable knack for crafting empathy grows deeper and deeper, ensuring we must see ourselves in these flailing and failing coots, and the fears that hold them.Points Of Origin by Will Stratton

Hi Team! Life at TYP central is mayhem at the moment, so we’re delving into the archives to share one of my favourite episodes with you. I will be back tomorrow with a freshie. See you then, Harps. *You wouldn’t think a conversation about trauma could be uplifting, entertaining and even fun, but this chat with Dr. Sarah Woodhouse (trauma expert, research psychologist, author and coach) is all that and more because not only is she a high level academic with a great understanding of the science, but she’s also endured her own trauma journey and come out the other side with amazing compassion, insight, energy and humour. Among other things, we discuss eating disorders, bullying and sexual abuse (all part of Sarah’s story), post-traumatic growth, the trauma spectrum (there’s a range), vicarious trauma, what trauma does to our body, healing and recovery, what causes a trauma response, the stress-anxiety-trauma relationship and why swearers are smarter than non-swearers (it’s science Bro). Enjoy. sarahwoodhouse.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Supplication offers a path.Christianity, heteronormativity, they promise a program. Follow us, do not question, and you will be rewarded. What happens when you stray? That's a core question behind Baths. Will Wiesenfeld's electronic project has asked it again and again, especially on 2013's brilliant Obsidian. And the uncertainty has come roaring back on his newest Gut. Gut refers to Wiesenfeld's promise to act instinctually while crafting the album, allowing impulses to direct the music. And that's clear from the throbbing beat on “Eden” (which is about having sex with an angel) or the cheery vocals yelling “that's that!” after Wiesenfeld asserts that “carnal is a normal mode.” Wiesenfeld thrives in juxtapositions and situations that, at first, appear to be contradictions. Gut catalogues sex both as an annihilating, freedom giving act, destroying the anxieties of the body, but also views fucking as a normal, even inane. Wiesenfeld's exploration of queerness refuses any path, spiritually, physically, sexually. And we're all the better for it.
Ghosts litter Drinking Songs. The damned drowned, dying soldiers, innocents packed onto a train before it explodes; there's not a note on Drinking Songs that isn't haunted. Released 20 years ago this year, Drinking Songs marked a foundational shift in Matt Elliott's life. He abandoned his work in the drum & bass group Third Eye Foundation and found a different way to pedal dread. Elliott composed using a morass of phantom vocals, nylon guitar, off-kilter piano, wailing horns, and a pervasive sense of doom. His vision was a dour bar in some Eastern European barony, where the patrons haven't realized they're already dead. 20 years on, Elliott has returned to Drinking Songs with a live, recomposed version of the original tale, the specters of the damned as lively as they were two decades ago. We talked to him about the best drink to pair with the album, the death of innocence, and the false promise of futurism on The Woodhouse.
On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib welcomes Leighton Akira Woodhouse back to the podcast for his third visit. Woodhouse is a journalist and documentarian based in Oakland, California. He grew up in Berkeley, and was a doctoral student in Sociology at UC Berkeley. After leaving academia he contributed to outlets like The Intercept, UnHerd and The Nation, before starting his own Substack, Social Studies. He hosts Le Pod with Lee Fang. Woodhouse was a major left-wing critic of the excesses of woke culture, and now he has turned his skeptical eye upon the regnant MAGA cultural political complex. In posts like MAGA Globalism and Neoliberalism is Back! Woodhouse observes how the Trump administration seems to have turned its back on the “working-class politics” espoused by J. D. Vance in favor of the sort of free-market libertarianism preferred by tech oligarchs like Elon Musk. Razib outlines the divisions in the Trump administration between Steve Bannon and the tech-globalists around Musk, and how these divisions explain online discord. Woodhouse though argues that Trump has clearly sided with Musk, allowing the government to be captured by monied interests that will profit from the military-industrial complex. He also argues that MAGA in power shows the same tendency of the woke movement in terms of clamping down on free speech now that the Right is ascendant. Woodhouse argues that the Right is now using the same tools of cultural hegemony that the woke Left used before 2024. He argues that institutional politicization today is very similar to the dynamic he saw before 2024 on the part of the woke Left.

Four Indigenous men were convicted of a 1973 Winnipeg murder following forced confessions and a trial later described by a judge as “infected” by racism. Three of those men have since been exonerated — after years behind bars — but Russell Woodhouse died in 2011 before he saw his name cleared. Now, his family are pushing for his posthumous exoneration.
In this recap episode, we're discussing Volume One, Chapters 1-9 of Jane Austen's Emma. We take a deep dive into Emma Woodhouse's world, examining her relationships with key figures like Miss Taylor, Mr. Woodhouse, and the insightful Mr. Knightley. We explore how Emma's interactions with these characters set the stage for her matchmaking adventures. As we continue through the chapters, we meet the wider community of Highbury, including the mysterious Frank Churchill and the charming Harriet Smith. Emma's matchmaking ambitions quickly take center stage, leading her to meddle in Harriet's love life and sparking a significant conflict with Mr. Knightley. We analyze Austen's use of narrative techniques, and discuss the importance of riddles and social expectations in the novel. In a special bonus segment, we preview our upcoming Footnotes episode, where we compare and analyze the opening lines from all six of Austen's most famous novels. On July 17, 1973, 40 year old father of two and local chef Ting Fong Chan was beaten and stabbed to death on his way home from his night shift in Manitoba, Winnipeg, CA. A witness saw silhouettes of 4 or 5 men with long hair. Under the assumption that the men were Native American, police began to canvas the local indigenous population. A man named Adam Woodhouse told investigators about a recent gathering at his home with a few other indigenous men. Even though this gathering did not take place on the night of the crime and nothing suspicious was described, police rounded up Clarence, Russell, and Allan Woodhouse, as well as Brian Anderson. Four false statements were extracted and written in a language that neither of the accused fully understood. Not surprisingly, none of the physical evidence matched the four young men. Despite this, their alibi witnesses, and accusations of police brutality, the jury chose to believe the false confessions. The voice is an instrument. The voice is the narrative. Flipping between at least four different languages, and darting across each others' vocal ranges, Catalan duo Tarta Relena offer a confounding, exhilarating version of vocal-focused music. Drawing from Gregorian chant, autotune forays, and Drum & Bass, their newest album És pregunta, could've been a total mess, but Helena Ros Redon and Marta Torrella i Martínez's strident voices serve as an awe-inspiring, unshakeable foundation. We talked to them below.

How have urban development patterns in California, particularly in LA, exacerbated wildfire risks? James Pogue and Leighton Woodhouse discuss the LA fires following Leighton's piece in the Free Press “LA Was Built to Burn.” The conversation explores the ecological, political, and cultural factors contributing to the wildfire crises across Los Angeles and beyond. We shed light on the human and environmental stakes in a burning state. Leighton Woodhouse is a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Oakland, California. He has written for The Intercept, The New Republic, The Nation, Tablet, UnHerd, and other publications.
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 14, 2025 is: deus ex machina DAY-us-eks-MAH-kih-nuh noun A deus ex machina is a character or thing that suddenly enters the story in a novel, play, movie, etc., and solves a problem that had previously seemed impossible to solve. // The introduction of a new love interest in the final act was the perfect deus ex machina for the main character's happy ending. See the entry > Examples: "The poultry thieves in Emma provide a particularly humorous example of deus ex machina: the arrival of a poultry thief into the surrounding area (on the penultimate page of the novel, no less) and his theft of Mrs. Weston's turkeys frightens Mr. Woodhouse enough to consent to Emma's marriage and to allow Mr. Knightley to move into Hartfield." — Inger Sigrun Bredkjær Brodey, Jane Austen & the Price of Happiness, 2024 Did you know? The New Latin term deus ex machina is a translation of a Greek phrase and means literally "a god from a machine." Machine, in this case, refers to the crane (yes, crane) that held a god over the stage in ancient Greek and Roman drama. The practice of introducing a god at the end of a play to unravel and resolve the plot dates from at least the 5th century B.C.; Euripides (circa 484-406 B.C.) was one playwright who made frequent use of the device. Since the late 1600s, deus ex machina has been applied in English to unlikely saviors and improbable events in fiction or drama that bring order out of chaos in sudden and surprising ways.
We open by discussing an Irish goodbye vs a French exit. The phraseology is different but the outcome is the same; “Leaving the Party Early.” The first song on Trust Fund's excellent Has it Been A While? and a perfect introduction to the introspection, paradoxes, and uncertainty all coming from a core human experience: terrified of being known, and knowing that's the only way to be loved. Trust Fund ringleader Ellis Jones' dexterous guitar work follows him through philosophical discussions entwined with urban decay and never ending construction. It's easy enough to agree with Nietzsche when your city is covered in scaffolding, the local housing authority swearing it'll be done soon. But just as many revelations come in small personal moments like a holiday shattered by grief (“In the Air”) or the contradiction duet of “The Mirror.” Has it Been A While? is Trust Fund's first album in 6 years, and its beauty and natural curiosity feel miraculous. We talked to Jones below.

On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib welcomes Leighton Akira Woodhouse back to the podcast. Woodhouse is a freelance journalist and a documentary filmmaker, currently based in Oakland, California. He grew up in Berkeley, and was a doctoral student in Sociology at UC Berkeley. After leaving academia he contributed to outlets like The Intercept and The Nation, before starting his own Substack, Social Studies, as well as working with Michael Shellenberger. He also has a new podcast with Lee Fang, Le Pod. Woodhouse and Razib discuss the broader issue of the necessity of order in cities, how important cities are to American economic dynamism, and how the problems of cities impact us all. One of Woodhouse's beats has been crime and public disorder, and living in the Bay Area he has been unwitting witness to some of the most flagrant dysfunction of the current era. He outlines the culpability of the judicial system in the rise of petty crime and details organized crime's opportunistic manipulation of the system. Razib inquires about the political elite's role in fostering disorder, in particular the policies and views of the mayor of Oakland and the Alameda County district attorney. They address the rise of the movement against law and order on the West coast, its connection to social libertarianism, and how that differs from East-coast big city liberalism. Woodhouse believes that the West coast's homelessness crisis emerges in particular from its unique political configuration accelerated by a judicial system that aids and abets social libertarianism that is operationally pro-crime. Finally, they discuss the possibility that the 2024 elections will throw out of office many of the mayors and district attorneys brought in in the last few years on a plan of social justice activism.
Jeff interviews Mandy Woodhouse, where they discuss the Lordship of Jesus and surrendering things that we are still holding onto. Ethicist Jamie Woodhouse has some challenging questions for humanity: should we care about the suffering of all sentient beings, or just the ones who run the show at the moment? What about when we're no longer running the show? Why should a superintelligent and possibly sentient machine intelligence care about us? Might there be other practical reasons to widen our circle of compassion beyond humans?Active Transcript by Fanfare (read/listen).Introduction: Revisiting Asimov's HumanismJoel reflects on Asimov's humanist philosophy, rooted in evidence, reason, and concern for humanity's progress. However, this anthropocentric focus leads to an important question: can humanism evolve to include all sentient beings? The Core of SentientismJamie Woodhouse introduces Sentientism as a naturalistic worldview advocating evidence, reason, and compassion for all sentient beings. He discusses how this broader ethical scope addresses humanism's anthropocentric blind spots and extends moral consideration to non-human animals and even potential artificial intelligences. The Role of Sentientism in Modern CrisesThe conversation highlights the intersection of Sentientism with critical global challenges like:Climate Change: The role of animal agriculture in exacerbating climate issues and the potential for Sentientism to influence more sustainable practices.AI Ethics: Speculating on the alignment of artificial intelligence with ethical frameworks, including the intriguing notion that future superintelligences might force humans to adopt more compassionate practices.Sentientism in ActionJamie explores practical applications, from rethinking agricultural systems to extending compassion beyond humanity. He suggests rewriting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to encompass "Sentient Rights" as a bold step forward.Science Fiction and Ethical FrontiersThe discussion pivots to the portrayal of sentience in science fiction. From Asimov's Gaia to Kim Stanley Robinson's Aurora and Iain M. Banks' Culture series, sci-fi offers fertile ground for exploring ethical questions about sentient beings, human or otherwise.Key Quotes:Jamie Woodhouse on Sentientism:"Sentientism says, in a line, we should commit to evidence, reason, and compassion for all sentient beings."On AI and Ethics:Joel McKinnon: "Maybe someday advanced AI will tell us, ‘We won't kill you, but you can't eat meat anymore.'"Jamie Woodhouse: "That's an interesting thought. It flips the script—an intelligence with a broader ethical framework imposing limits on us for the benefit of others."Expanding Morality:"The reason I might care about you isn't because we share DNA but because you have the capacity to suffer and flourish. That's what truly matters."Referenced Works and Further Reading:Humanism and Asimov:Wikipedia: HumanismThe Gaia Hypothesis: James Lovelock's work on Earth as a sentient system.Sentientism Resources:Jamie Woodhouse's Sentientism WebsiteRelated podcasts on Sentientism.Ethics and AI:Books mentioned:Aurora by Kim Stanley RobinsonIain M.
