On this week's podcast interview Paul interviews Deborah Burns of Invest.Us  She is involved in venture capital and worked on the New Mexico/China business matchmaking conference a few years ago. So, Paul starts out by asking her for an update on the political and trade situation with China. Then Deborah shares a unique opportunity involving federal stimulus money that New Mexico could work with venture capitalists like hers to bring additional investment to the state in the form of infrastructure.    This is a fascinating, forward-looking, and positive discussion about an innovative opportunity for our state. 

Deborah Burns and I basically reenacted that line from "Pretty Woman" when we met over hors d'oeuvres at an industry event: "What happens when (s)he rescues the princess? (S)he rescues him right back!"  We bonded over boredom and brie and traded business cards. The kind of exchange that means well, but ends up in the card pile of good intentions. But fate stepped in and just several days later we each showed up at a totally unrelated cocktail party! And that was the beginning of another relationship with a friend in high places. Deborah, after all, is what I aspire to: the former Chief Innovation Officer of major magazines, such as Elle Decor and Metropolitan Home...turned memoirist and corporate consultant! Her book, Saturday's Child, revolves around her evolution from dancing around her emotionally distanced mother with surrogate mothers in the form of two spinster aunts. My story is one of an emotionally present mother who departed this earth too soon, followed by attempted mothering from two back to back step-mothers. Let the bonding continue. But some 25 years after her own mother's passing, Deborah's epiphanies took the form of beautifully crafted a-ha moments interspersed with humor and insights we can all relate to. Learn how she also learned about "Skirting the Rules" which she's encouraging others to do, too! I recorded this episode in my home just before we were all staying in our own homes. And, pre-pandemic there was Hollywood buzz for its movie-worthiness, which can hopefully get resurrected. The Oxford Student has learnt that Dr Young-hae Chi, Professor at Oxford's Oriental Institute, believes in a strong correlation between climate change and alien abductions. In 2012, Dr Chi gave a lecture at the the Ammach Conference, titled ‘Alien Abduction and the Environmental Crisis' in which he outlined his theory concerning the presence of aliens on earth. Dr Chi began his lecture with the statement that “perhaps human civilisation is coming to an end”. In his fifty-five minute presentation he cited Dr David Jacobs, an ‘abduction researcher' in the US, who argued that aliens' primary purpose is to colonise the earth, by interbreeding with humans to produce a new hybrid species. Second generation ‘hybrids' are, according to Jacobs, walking unobserved among us. Dr Chi argued that “it is not only scientists and theologians, but also non-human species who appear to be greatly concerned about the survivability of the human species”. He went on to argue that if we act now on climate change, “not only can we save ourselves, but also prove aliens wrong in their judgement of our moral capacity”. In April 2018, Dr Chi approached The Oxford Union to propose a debate on the subject. The proposed motion was: ‘Aliens exist on earth, Yes or no?'. However, this proposal was not accepted by the then president-elect. Since the conference, Dr Chi has developed his theory, writing a book in Korean, the title of which roughly translates to: ‘Alien Visitations and the End of Humanity'. Dr Chi believes that there are four types of aliens: small; tall and bold; aliens with scales and snake eyes; and finally, insect-like aliens. The latter of these seems to be the highest in the hierarchy, he said, and gives orders to the lower ranks. According to Dr Chi's theory, the fact that aliens and humans share the same biosphere means that climate change bears a negative impact on them, thus accounting for their increased interference in human affairs.
