In this episode, THE MENTORS RADIO Host Dan Hesse talks with Jimmy Roberts, a 15-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and writer for ESPN and ABC Sports, about how athletes break out of slumps. Jimmy Roberts has had what most people would think of as an interesting run. During a 30-year career in network television, he has spoken at the United Nations, and interviewed a convicted murderer behind the walls of Attica State Penitentiary. He has traveled with the heavyweight boxing champion to meetings with Nelson Mandela in Soweto and the Pope at the Vatican … and had dinner at the White House with the president of the United States. That said, he is primarily known as a sports reporter who has chronicled 19 Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and, of course golf, where he has covered more than 70 major championships, 15 Ryder Cups, and since 2012 has been the signature voice of Augusta National's acclaimed digital platform MASTERS.COM. Roberts has earned numerous distinctions, including a Golf Writers Association of America award, The Metropolitan Golf Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Lincoln Werden Journalism medal. He is also a prolific writer. For two decades Roberts has been the featured back page columnist for Met Golfer (NY) Magazine. His most recent book, the bestseller “NO ONE WINS ALONE” (Simon & Schuster,) written in 2021 with hockey legend Mark Messier, discusses motivation and performance lessons from one of professional sports greatest leaders. In 2009, Harper Collins published his first book, Breaking the Slump, which tells the story of how some of the best golfers to ever play the game - as well as one former president and one Olympic gold medalist - dug themselves out of career-threatening dry spells. The book was critically praised in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated. “Jimmy Roberts has always been a wonderful storyteller, touching the hearts and challenging the minds of viewers,” said legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Roberts often speaks about the book, which he understands has a universality to it: “As golfers, we're all really the same. There are two types of us in this world; those who've had a slump, and those who are going to have (at least) one. And it's a matter of degree. When Jack Nicklaus struggles, he loses the ball to the left. When I struggle, I just… lose the ball.” Roberts also came to realize in writing this book - ostensibly about golf - that it really was something that had nothing to do with the game; it was a book about how successful people handled adversity. For the last 24 years, Roberts has been a fixture on NBC, where this summer he will report from the Paris Olympic Games.

There's a lot of reasons to be feeling, hmmm… if a picture's worth a thousand words, then who knows what a video is ...a lot of reasons to be down, including the garbage world of hockey. But this is a place for joy, not for shredding Marc Staal (his dipshit bigot-using-religion-for-cover brother Eric, too, but especially Marc because of all the years he spent in New York, including when I (hi, it's Jesse if you're new here — Andrew and Roger have nothing to do with these “show notes”) covered the Rangers for the Daily News. So, we'll put that aside and dive into a question raised by Ryan Lambert and Sean McIndoe on the latest Puck Soup.In December of 2016, the Blues fired Mike Keenan, and replaced him with Joel Quenneville. In between, interim coach Jimmy Roberts got nine games behind St. Louis' bench, going 3-3-3.Between them, Keenan (672) and Quenneville (969) have won 1,641 games as NHL coaches. So, does Roberts hold the very niche record of Interim Coach Between The Pair Of Coaches With the Most Wins? This isn't super hard to figure out. Quenneville is second on the NHL's all-time wins list, behind only Scotty Bowman. Keenan is 15th. You might figure this out a different way, and that's cool, but here's my process: go through the top coaches until you reach a place where you can't get a combo adding up to more than 1,641, and Roberts has the record — or someone else has a bigger number before you get to that point. For clarity's sake, we'll call an interim coach one who does not finish out the season.Bowman himself was never replaced by, nor replaced, an interim coach as such. Bowman's career reads funny because he coached the Sabres in 1979-80, then for 35 games in 1981-82, then for the next three full seasons, plus 37 games in 1985-86 and 12 more in 1986-87 — because Bowman was also GM in Buffalo and stepping behind the bench himself sometimes.Quenneville got the ax in St. Louis in 2004, replaced by Mike Kitchen on a full-time basis, so no worries there. Same with Jeremy Colliton, while Andrew Brunette finished out last season in Florida before the Panthers turned to Paul Maurice.Barry Trotz (914 wins): Never fired in-season.Ken Hitchcock (849), Lindy Ruff (827): Part of in-season coaching changes, but never with a team that had a true interim in the mix.Paul Maurice (811): The 2004 Hurricanes — hey, that's shit-for-brains Eric Staal's rookie year, and he was teammates with Ron Francis and Artūrs Irbe, which is excellent to keep in mind for your Six Degrees Of… hockey games! — went straight to Peter Laviolette, who has 751 career wins and counting, and with Maurice also being active, they're at 1,562 wins and counting, which is… not a record for combined career wins by the coaches of one team in a single season, because you've not only got those 1,641 career wins for Keenan and Quenneville with the 1996-97 Blues, but also Roberts' 50 (three with those Blues, 21 for the Bowman-run 1981-82 Sabres, and 26 in his one full season as coach, with the 1991-92 Hartford Whalers). Stay tuned?Al Arbour (782): One of those wins was actually as an interim coach, when Arbour got what amounted to a testimonial match with the Islanders. He's officially listed that season as the coach between Ted Nolan and Ted Nolan again. And it wouldn't matter if Al Arbour had coached between Al Arbour and Al Arbour, because 782+782=1,564, and that's less than 1,641. No two coaches on this list can combine to get there, and while Darryl Sutter and John Tortorella (sort of, but congrats on win number 700, man, hope you're real proud of Staalsie today, too) remain active with 700-plus wins, Roberts, who died in 2015, remains the voice between the two biggest voices, as far as NHL history is concerned. It's a garage league full of spineless dweebs, but the history is interesting. Relationships are front and center in two very different shows now running on the North Bay’s northernmost stages through August 19. The Cloverdale Performing Arts Center is presenting Heroes, playwright Tom Stoppard’s adaptation of a 2003 French play about three World War I vets in a retirement home. Gustave (Robert Bauer), Henri (Peter Immordino), and Philippe (Dale Harriman) pass their days sitting on a terrace, annoying each other, and plotting their escape from the veterans’ home. Convinced that the tyrannical nun in charge has it out for Philippe, their latest plan starts out with the goal of running to French Indo-China but ends on settling for a poplar grove within view of their terrace. Now if they can just figure a way to take a 200 lb. statue of a dog with them. An odd combination of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Waiting for Godot, and The Golden Girls (with Gustave as Dorothy, Henri as Blanche, and Philippe as Rose), Heroes is a slight piece with some amusing dialogue and geriatric slapstick. 'Heroes' runs Friday through Sunday through August 19 at the Cloverdale Performing Arts Center in Cloverdale. Friday and Saturday evening performances at 7:30pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to cloverdaleperformingarts.com Healdsburg’s Raven Players have converted the cavernous Raven Theatre into an intimate black box performance space and are presenting an updated version of 1996’s I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change. The Joe DiPietro and Jimmy Roberts musical revue holds the record as the second-longest running Off-Broadway show. It consists of a series of comedic vignettes that follow the arc of human relationships from dating, sex, and marriage through children and aging. Four versatile performers (Bohn Connor, Kelly Considine, Troy Evans, and Tika Moon) sing and dance their way through eighteen scenes with songs like “Better Things to Do”, “Single Man Drought”, and “I Can Live with That”. Recent revisions include 21st century additions like sexting (“A Picture of His…”) and same-sex families (“The Baby Song”). It’s a very entertaining show helped immensely by the talented cast. All do well by the multiple roles they play, but the rubber-faced Connor really makes an impression with characters ranging from an incarcerated mass murderer giving dating tips to a hapless husband trying to put the kids to bed so he and the missus can get it on. ‘I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ runs Thursday through Sunday through August 19 at the Raven Performing Arts Theater in Healdsburg. Thursday through Saturday performances are at 8pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to raventheater.org.

That, of course, leads into the loss of the great Jimmy Roberts, the Original Blue. There are two losses in terms of competition, but just as bad are the losses to injury: Paul Stastny and Jaden Schwartz. The hits just keep coming. It's not all gloom and doom, though, and we manage to have a few laughs along the way. We finish on a fun note - a sort of abstract question from the ol' mailbag that will test your creativity.
