“Disclosure Day” and “The Odyssey” are expected to dominate the summer box office, but they’re not quite here. Instead, we’ve been left with an underwhelming start to the summer movie season to go with the conclusion of several seasons and series of streaming favorites. On this week’s episode, co-host Bruce Miller shares his thoughts on movies that missed the mark, from “Power Ballad” to “The Breadwinner” to “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.” And then there is another movie with low expectations: “Masters of the Universe.” Co-host Terry Lipshetz shares his thoughts on the conclusions of “Euphoria,” “Beef,” “Half Man,” “The Testaments,” and “For All Mankind,” before turning to the start of the latter’s spinoff, “Star City.” About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is the retired editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, managing editor of the National Newsroom for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. Adam Holtz is temporarily indisposed (Paul Asay's version of events involves a closet), so Paul steps in from the Plugged In team at Focus on the Family to run through what's worth watching this weekend. First up: The Breadwinner, a PG comedy starring Nate Bargatze about a dad who discovers he has no idea how to run his own household once his wife leaves for a month — sweet, clean, and a genuine rarity at the multiplex. Then a heads-up for parents of teenagers: Backrooms is getting buzz, teens are already emailing Plugged In asking when the review drops, and the R rating is earned. Finally, a World War II drama that tells a genuinely underreported story — the meteorologists whose weather forecast either made or broke the D-Day invasion. Brendan Fraser as Eisenhower takes some adjusting to, but the history is real and the story is worth knowing. All three are in theaters. Johnny Mac covers backlash to Kevin Hart's Breakfast Club comments defending roast boundary-pushing after Tony Hinchcliffe's George Floyd joke, plus Hinchcliffe's Kill Tony remarks about being labeled a Nazi and his response to Chelsea Handler; Nikki Glaser says roasts raise the stakes, supports ironically racist jokes only if they work, and keeps specifics private, while Matt Rife says critics should not watch roasts. The episode also discusses Nate Bargatze's new film The Breadwinner, citing Variety's negative review of its “incompetent dad” beats and muddled message, alongside quotes from Mandy Moore and Bargatze about making a family comedy, plus box office projections. The Wall Street Journal details plans for Bargatze's “Nate Land” theme park near Nashville, including investors, incentives, and a 1990s mall entry concept. TUNER quickly became one of our favorite films of the year. Leo Woodall, Havana Rose Liu and Dustin Hoffman's performances are great, Daniel Roher's direction is top notch and the story is compelling. Unfortunately, it's directly competing with THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU, DISCLOSURE DAY, PRESSURE, MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, BACKROOMS, POWER BALLAD and THE BREADWINNER, all within 14 days of it's wide release date. And that's not even mentioning the fact that MICHAEL and THE SHEEP DETECTIVES are still performing well. But we implore you... do not sleep on TUNER. Find it in your local theater and go see it. Let's talk about it...
Ending May on a high note (at least in number of reviews) Erik Childress & Steve Prokopy cover 11 films for you this week. Steve looks at a documentary about an autistic dancer exploring her new diagnosis through her art (Room to Move), as well as a mother haunted by postpartum depression (Nesting). Erik took a little time to see John Travolta's directing debut adapting his children's book about airplanes (Propeller One-Way Night Coach). There is also the latest collaboration between Mads Mikkelsen & Anders Thomas Jensen (The Last Viking) and a WWII film about the weather forecast for D-Day (Pressure). Katie Aselton explores grieving a traumatic loss (Magic Hour) while a mother discovers her son sent his assistant to do the same after losing her husband (Miss You, Love You). A gifted pianist-turned-piano-repairman uses his unique talent for crime (Tuner) while Paul Rudd's songwriter has one stolen by Nick Jonas in the latest from John Carney (Power Ballad). “Clean comic” Nate Bargatze makes his big-screen debut in a Mr. Mom riff (The Breadwinner) and 20 year-old Kane Parsons may have made the next horror film everyone will be talking about (Backrooms).1:20 - Room to Move9:29 - Propeller One-Way Night Coach16:12 - Nesting23:37 - Miss You, Love You34:18 - The Last Viking43:30 - Magic Hour53:43 - Pressure1:01:07 - Tuner1:11:59 - Power Ballad1:25:02 - The Breadwinner1:40:37 - BackroomsCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCAST OR BUY FROM MOVIEZYNGBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. In this hilarious and heartfelt episode of Backstage Pass with Gentry Thomas, comedian Nate Bargatze joins Gentry to talk about his new family comedy movie, The Breadwinner. The film stars Nate as a salesman and father who suddenly has to hold down the household after his wife, played by Mandy Moore, lands a major business opportunity that takes her away from home. The result is a funny, relatable story about parenting, chaos, and learning how to do things your own way. The Breadwinner opens exclusively in theaters on May 29, 2026. Fans can watch the trailer and get tickets here:The Breadwinner Nate and Gentry also connect over something pretty unique: both of them grew up with magicians for dads. They talk about what that kind of childhood was like, how it shaped their sense of humor, and how growing up around entertainment can quietly prepare you for life on stage. The conversation also takes a trip through Tennessee, including the Smoky Mountains, Dollywood, and Nate’s big dream of building his own theme park called Nate Land. Nate opens up about being a girl dad, what touring life is really like, and how his stand-up career has grown from comedy clubs to arenas. Gentry and Nate also talk about what it was like hosting Saturday Night Live twice, how acting in a movie compares to doing stand-up, and why comedy continues to be the thing he loves most. From family stories and fatherhood to SNL, movies, Tennessee, and the future of Nate Land, this episode is packed with laughs, heart, and classic Nate Bargatze charm.
Kane Parsons' BACKROOMS opens this weekend and the predictions for the liminal spaces horror flick are through the roof. Nate Bargatze joined us today to talk about his new movie The Breadwinner & revealed new details about his Theme Park development Nateland in Nashville. He talked about roller-coaster shopping, his first red carpet premiere, and what the GOAT appetizer is at a chain restaurant. Count how many times he says 'uh' and you could win a prize! We kicked off our Funner Summer Challenge today, forcing each other to have an epic summer by doing things like throw a keg party, see 10+ shows, have sex on the beach, and pull an all nighter. The first wheel spin forced Ally to try a new drug, which is going to be difficult if she gets pregnant soon... We also talked to the guy who created the controversial Ozzy Osbourne AI Hologram. He swears it's classy, state-of-the-art, and not a threat to Ozzy's legacy. The call ended badly when Ally attempted to do her terrible Ozzy Osbourne impression. Petty Claims Court was VERY interactive today as a man accused his girlfriend of asking him to bring her things as soon as he sits down to relax. Listeners quickly branded Karla a "Latina T3000 Terminator" and a "Toxica Torta" and things only progressed from there.
