Heather du Plessis-Allan: I'm shocked by Biden's behaviour following his decision to drop out

Do you know what's surprised me the most about Joe Biden quitting this morning? It's obviously not that he's quit - I mean that was predictable, it clearly needed to happen. But what's surprised me is that he's been so badly behaved about it. First of all, it shouldn't have taken him more than three weeks to quit. It should've been obvious to him immediately after the debate that it probably wasn't survivable. But if you give him the benefit of the doubt and say he deserved to at least try to fight to stay - fair enough, but come on. When George Clooney and Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi made it pretty obvious nearly two weeks ago that they did not back him, he should've pulled out then. But no, he dug his heels in and dragged it on.And then, to endorse Kamala Harris on his way out just feels really bratty. I would argue he shouldn't have done it. For a start, she's going to struggle to beat Trump, she's one of the most unpopular VPs in a long time, if not in history. And he must know that - he himself privately expressed that sentiment according to reports, which is part of the reason he didn't want to quit. He should not have endorsed her, because other senior Democrats clearly do not want her to be anointed by him like this. Neither Barack Obama or Nancy Pelosi have endorsed her yet, and it's been a few hours. That says a lot. So it feels like what he's just done is given them a massive middle finger, possibly in retaliation for forcing him out. He's entitled to do that if he wants to be a brat - but what he's just done is laid out how divided and shambolic the Democrats are right now. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the Democracts who would've hoped the division would end the minute that Biden stepped down. But by endorsing Kamala Harris, he's just made sure it goes on for potentially weeks until the party's National Convention next month. People have made a lot of Biden in the last few hours - they've sung his praises, they've hero-worshipped him, they've said he's one of the best Presidents they can remember. But he has just demonstrated what a brat he can he be. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Including:SBF:What the hell has happened in the SBF story? What impact might this have on wider efforts to promote the idea of cryptophilanthropy? Will SBF's downfall lead to further calls to clamp down on big money donations in politics, given his prominent support for the Democracts in recent years? Is it likely to mean more skepticism about philanthropic funding for journalism, given that some feel SBF's significant donations to news outlets led to him receiving less critical coverage?Does his downfall present an existential crisis for Effective Altruism (EA)?Should we distinguish between different ways of understanding EA: EA-as-movement, EA-as-ideology, EA-as-academic-field? What’s ahead for Republicans, Democracts, and Independents when it comes to civics in our country and communities? How can we work together when parties are often divided themselves? This February Civic Cocktail is the first of an intended multi-part, multi-party series. Join CityClub as they explore a few—certainly not all—of the varying viewpoints within the Republican Party with a discussion between the Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson and local Republican leader Bill Bryant, moderated by journalist Joni Balter. With the national election over, they explored some of the next steps for the Republican Party. After the departure of a one-term president who commanded a deeply loyal following among a large number, as well as challenged a number of others, the party is left without a clear, national standard bearer. Will the Republicans maintain a cohesive theme to unite the disparate perspectives within their ranks nationally? What is the local impact and future of the Party here in Washington? Join CityClub for this conversation to get some insight. As a 40-year-old nonpartisan, civics-focused nonprofit, Seattle CityClub provides a platform for insightful and educational conversations that include a diverse range of opinions. But sometimes we need to dive deeper into a particular topic, so we can listen and engage in a more thoughtful manner with our community. Rick Wilson is a Republican political strategist, negative ad-maker, writer, speaker, and political commentator. He is a founding member of the Never Trump movement, and a co-founder of the Lincoln Project. Wilson is the author of Everything Trump Touches Dies and Running Against the Devil. His work has been seen in The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, Politico, Rolling Stone, and more, as well as on CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. Bill Bryant is the founder and chairman of Bryant Christie Inc. Under President Reagan, he was appointed as a trade policy coordinator at the Department of Commerce International Trade Commission. He organized the presidential campaign for Vice President Bush in Washington, and was co-chair for the Dole for President finance committee in Washington. In 2005, he served as the Washington State GOP finance chair, and in 2007 he was elected to King County Port Commission—the only Republican elected King County-wide—and re-elected in 2011. We keep running out of words to describe the evils of this administration. This week, immigrant children with medical visas that allow them to receive treatment in the US for serious illness received letters to let them know their participation in the program was being REVOKED. In other words, the government is now deporting seriously ill children and their families. That news was followed by an announcement that some children of US military personnel and employees born overseas will no longer be automatically considered US citizens.  All of this comes on the heels of a week when the president tried to manipulate the markets by lying about conversations with Chinese officials, promoted his failing Doral golf resort as the site for the next G7 meeting, and opened Alaska's pristine Tongass National Forest to developers. MOMocrats Karoli, Aliza Worthington, and Donna Schwartz Mills discuss all of this, plus the race for 2020, and more in this week's political podcast from the progressive point of view.

The drip-drip-drip of revelations about the Trump administration's ties to Russia turned into a flood last night as three different news organizations published explosive pieces examining different aspects of this complex and complicated story: (1) The New York Times reported that by the end of President Obama's administration, officials were so disturbed by the intelligence they were receiving on Russian involvement in the 2016 election that they took desperate measures to ensure that the information would not disappear once the Trump team took over. (2) The Washington Post published an account of Attorney General Jeff Sessions meeting twice with the Russian ambassador - even though he told the Senate Judicial Committee under oath that no such meetings had ever taken place. Since that report, there have been bipartisan calls for an independent prosecutor, or for Sessions to at least recuse himself from any investigations. Nancy Pelosi and Elijah Cummings have called for Sessions to resign for committing perjury. So far, Sessions doesn't appear to be heeding any of these suggestions. (3) The Wall Street Journal - which is a part of Rupert Murdoch's Fox media empire - corroborated the Washington Post article, with additional information about the investigation that turned up this new information.
