Political Fun Time Happy Hour Deluxe
Andi (@Pamphleteer), Ty and Brent jump on to quickly run down a few stories. No one says the "G Word" so we managed to keep it under an hour, for once.
Andi (@Pamphlet_tyr) and Ty finally talk through Cop City in Atlanta and the future it portends, then cackle as tech bros play Jenga with the economy. Show Twitter: @pfthhd
Andi and Ty catch up, hit a little bit of the electoral circus, interrogate the state mechanisms of exclusion and extraction (and their ultimate limits), then dare to ask the question: “Dudes, seriously?”
Are robo-lawyers even more soulless than the regular kind? Are there algorithmic upsides? What about pyrates? Ruthless, uncivilized brigands, or visionary forebearers of a democratic revolt against expanding state power? All this, a little too much imbibing, and more!
It's Andi (@pamphlet_tyr), Ty (@WhyThatTyGuy), and Brent (toocoolfortwitter) going back to our roots. We catch up on activities across the right, ranging from McCarthy's historical inability to speak for the House to Brazilian January 6th (on January 8th). We bemoan how our heroes have fallen and try to trace the mysterious republican congressman from, well, who knows where. It's loose, we have a generally good time, and of course, we get real sad about halfway through.
Brent, Andi (@pamphlet_tyr), and Ty (@WhyThatTyGuy) run through a terrifying article from @LCRWnews that ties all too well into the second half of our conversation with Sophie (@sophie_frm_mars), wherein we discuss why it's all Britain's fault, cowboy Christians, and sci-fi antidotes to fascism.Show Twitter: @pfthhd Show E-mail: PoliticalFunTimeHappyHour@Gmail.com
Ty and Andi (@pamphlet_tyr) are joined by @sophie_frm_mars for a wide ranging discussion about the religious right, the left's relation to religion, the dangers of millenarianism, whether pre- or post-, and how to tell the future through racist archaeology. Too much good stuff for a single episode, so tune in next week for the shocking conclusion! Show Twitter: @pfthhd Show Email: PoliticalFunTimeHappyHour@Gmail.com
In what may be a new record, Andi (@Pamphlet_tyr) gets to a Graeber reference in under 5 minutes, but we mostly start with Twitter/Elon, bemoan the wrongs done to our man Matt Binder, and then elegantly solve Karl Popper's dilemma of tolerance. Show Twitter (womp womp): @pfthhd
The Gang (@pftthhd) is back, with Andi (@Pamphlet_Tyr), Brent, and Ty. It's a bit of MTG, a bit of Musk, then a deep dive into climate discussions centered on Andreas Malm's work (How to Blow Up a Pipeline and Fossil Capital), Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine, and a bit of Oreskes/Conway's Merchants of Doubt as anchor points.
The old gang is back in action, as Andi, Brent, and Ty rejoin their forces to talk through the last year, or at least the last week, diving deep into the West/Jones/Pool/Fuentes arc, hashing out what we can glean from the acceleration of right wing violence and intimidation, and generally revisiting just how right we were.
It’s Brent, Ty, and making his first appearance on the show: Max! We try to figure out if evangelicals are bigger in Texas, Ty gets talked out of going to law school, and we discuss the assault on Gaza along with the threads of American Evangelical Zionism that plays such a large role in the rhetoric. Max is @ComradeTexas Brent is @BernieJeb2020 Ty is @WhyThatTyGuy
It’s the usual suspects joined for the first time (of what we hope will be many) by Hongyu. Ty is a Lib and Andi properly scolds him; Brent brags about being brave enough to watch SNL; Graeber is mentioned; We are sad about things…. yep, sounds like a show. Andi’s stuff: youtube.com/pamphleteer and @pamphlet_tyr Check out @riseup4rojava2Brent’s music is at soundcloud.com/brentriken
We jump all over the place, some Biden, some Gaetz, theories of feudal state power and coercion, you know, the usual.
It's a laid back episode wherein Brent and Ty catch up, talk about the relative lack of news being forced down our gullets, and nerd out about academia. It's a casual, back to the roots old-school PFT chat without Andi to draw any broad, significant themes out of, so listen at your own risk.
It’s a special episode this time. We abandoned 2/3rds of the crew so our guest could actually get a word in edge-wise, and it was well worth it (!) ‘cause we had one Dana Baker (@danambaker) on to talk local involvement, a different take on dual power, rural takeovers and other dark commie plots. Muahaha.
It’s the full crew plus returning guest Josh from Sierra Foothill Stump and the podcast “Fellow Workers.” (www.facebook.com/FWpod). We try to hone in on the early January putsch and what comes next, but don’t worry, we still make it to the bronze age and indulge a little too much in how to cook marijuana.
Andi and Ty started talking about the Qoup attempt and quickly devolved into more David Graeber fangirling, some reevaluation of Midas myths (wherein Andi spitballs real-time fanfic re-writes of Greek mythology)and then totally solved that dual power problem.
The Gang o’ Three is back and we dive into some of the Proud Boy violence from Sacramento to D.C., laugh at lil’ Pete’s new conductor gig and spend most of the episode unapologetically nerding out on David Graeber’s body of work. Seriously though, Graber’s notions on debt, how it originally functioned, and how the inversion of that relationship through Jesus and J.P. Morgan was a bad thing. Surprise surprise, Andi gets a little too high, Ty interrupts constantly to ramble until losing his point, and Brent hols out that the steal will yet be stopped. Get info on Andi’s Stream here: https://bit.ly/3muSprt Find the show on Twitter @pfthhd or email politicalfuntimehappyhour@gmail.com Brent is on Twitter @berniejeb2020 and you can find his music at soundcloud.com/brentriken Ty doesn’t really tweet, but when he does it’s from @WhyThatTyGuy Andi is on Twitter @pamphlet_tyr and on youtube as Pamphleteer.
It's been way too long, so Andi, Ty and Brent hop on to run through latest, et cetera, et cetera
The inimitable @EmericanJohnson of Non-Compete joins us to talk about turning the very marketing weapons of the capitalist state in on themselves, anarchy robo-puppets, contracopoganda, and more! We solemnly and respectfully react to the news of Covid sweeping through the Trump administration and discuss how best to pray for the leadership of this nation in times such as these.
Brent, Andi and Ty sort through the mostly awful takes on RBG from all directions, can't resist a little more reveling in the fall of ol' J.F. Jr , can't believe the election is so close, and generally alternate between bouts of madness induced by staring into the abyss and some chuckles about the particulars of our strange, surreal society.
It’s the regular crew talkin’ with Jaron Brandon, a candidate for Tuolumne’s District 5 County Supervisor (jaronfor5.com), about the relative utility of partisan approaches to local issues, how to bridge the divide in political conversation, and how this particular stretch of rural California faces both unique combinations of post-industrial, 21st-century challenges, and reflects many of the issues felt by rural populations across America. The crew comes back after the interview to try to make some sense of the balancing act between normative electoral politics, pushing the envelope, and strategically leveraging power for the people wherever you can find it.
It's Brent and Ty with Abner (!) (of @lcrwnews) and his associates Sabine (@SabineSFS) and Josh (@redandblackheel) of the Sierra Foothill Stump to discuss the Straight Pride event in Modesto, bigotry in the hills, the balance of self-defense and de-escalation, and oh so damn much more. You know where to find us. More importantly however, you can (and should) throw all your money to https://www.patreon.com/lcrw and patreon.com/sfs_sabine
Ty goes it alone this time for a conversation with Penny, Bonnie, and Jay from Tenacious Unicorn Ranch. We discuss what drove them each to make such bold leaps of faith, how you move 100 alpacas, rural tensions and the power of open-armed community (in all senses of that phrase). You can find more information and means of contact or donation on their Twitter profile: @TenaciousRanch. You can get ahold of us through twitter as well @pfthhd and find other avenues to harass us individually there.
Friend of the show Caleb (gowdieee on Twitch) joins Brent and Andi to discuss Steve Bannon's fraudulent charity, "We Build the Wall", the ongoing fires in California, and the latest Qanon nonsense. Follow us on twitter @pfthhd WTFBrahh Biden song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwoN-FvVEsA
It’s Brent and Ty, joined by special guest Jacob to hear about his experience working with the elderly in assisted living facilities and more! We get into a psycho-analytic sort of look at the projection within reactionary politics formations, how what Covid has exposed lays bare our awful priorities and disregard for our aging populations, and of course, we discuss Kamala (where Brent and Ty vie each to be the bigger lib) and indulge a little bit on the “lighter” side of Trump’s absolute madness. Find the show on Twitter @pfthhd or email politicalfuntimehappyhour@gmail.com Brent is on Twitter @berniejeb2020 and you can find his music at soundcloud.com/brentriken Ty doesn’t really tweet, but when he does it’s from @WhyThatTyGuy Andi is on Twitter @pamphlet_tyr and on youtube as Pamphleteer.
We’ll be back with more guests soon, but for this round it’s Andi, Brent and Ty. We couldn’t resist dipping our toes into some clips of the Axios interview with Trump, but we could honestly only bear about a third of it. We do some speculating about elections and how likely we are to miss the illusion of democracy when it’s gone. Brent cracks Q’s code and reveals some Trump campaign documents that have been revealed to PATRIOTS like him.
We’re joined by “Lovejoy Pegatron” to hear about what it’s been like on the ground in Portland. It’s a great conversation that sheds some light on what’s actually happening between all the news stories and places the struggle in a context of both realistic appraisal of the challenges we face and a loving idealism that is so necessary to the movement.
It’s Andi, Brent and Ty this time, with a conversation (ambush/debate?) about Austrian economics with Michael Hoffman (@austropunk) author of Monetary Kaleidics, a bit of reflection thereupon, and then some talk of CHOPs, CHAZs, and other autonomous things. Find Brent’s music here.
Ty and Brent are joined by Abner (!) the proprietor of LeftCoastRightWatch.org. We’ve been looking forward to having him back on for nigh on a year now and we’ve gotta have him in the mix far more often. He provides amazing on the ground reporting, insightful commentary, and if he’s not a key part of your Twitter feed now, you’re doin’ yourself a disservice. We reference a couple articles in our chat, Abner’s being here, and the Middlebury one Brent referenced here. Also check out the Unicorn Riot Video. You can keep this vital source of news and independent coverage going by donating to Abner's Patreon or sharing his work far and wide. Preferably both!
Brent is back! Along with Ty and Andrew, we talk about some of the protests we have seen and attended so far and try to process the rapid-fire, emotionally-charged succession of news and new developments. It's heated, raw, and un-edited. Also, we're a bunch of white folks trying to sort this out from our perspective but we do wanna make it clear that we're far, far, far from the most relevant, important, or poignant voices and are just hoping it helps others process through similar limited perspectives. I (Ty) strongly recommend listening (and donating to) Ben Dixon's show. Pretty sure it's mentioned in the episode, but in addition to his brilliant articulation of this as a true American revolution (unlike that bourgeoisie shit in our first try), his frank commentary directed toward white Americans in other racial situations has been personally helpful and shifted how I think about a lot. The Discourse is always great too, as is Champagne Sharks. And JCJ of GhettoNewsNetwork. He also had a great appearance on the Antifada recently that's worth checking out. As we said at the end of this episode, who cares where you can find us? Check out some of the above recommendations and let us know if there are any other black voices we can help amplify right now.
One Mr. Cropper reached out to our very own Pamphleteer offering to debate the merits of Ayn Rand's individualistic perspective. The gauntlet was thrown, accepted, and Tyler lied about being willing to be a neutral arbiter for this event. Here's the result.
We largely avoid the 'rona talk in this one. Andrew talks us through the difference between the real world and the one of conservative fiction, we revel a bit in the glorious 'Murica-ness of the recent "Greywater" operation in Venezuela, and cover a bit of the infuriating and unjust timeline of the Ahmaud Arbery.
We mostly around the events in Michigan, but delve a bit into the anti-isolation protests at large, break down some of the issues of State/Federal authority, and try to find some good faith in all of these actions. We don't, so we move on to doing back Nickelback impressions and decide that no one has ever been hornier than Chad Kroeger. Andrew wanted me to link to something, but he was too high to remember what it was. Go @ him.
Brent and Ty run through some news, hear from our good friend Nick about what it takes behind the scenes to keep the grocery stores stocked and then make him explain 5G so we can understand why it made the bats give us commuronavirus. We do of course, hit on Bernie suspending his campaign and a bit of the hydroxychloroquine controversy, as well as a few game recommendations.Find the show on Twitter @pfthhd.
We’re joined by history professor, whiskey drinker, and all around brilliant guy, Joshua Pollock and in addition to hearing some direct accounts of the Hong Kong demonstrations of 2019 took a deep dive into the deeper context surrounding China, Hong Kong, the influence of Lee Kuan Yew on China after Mao, and oh so much more. It was a very fun conversation, but Josh also relayed an incredible amount of dense information and analysis in a wonderfully digestible way. We’re hoping this will be the first of many times we have him on. Can you tell I’m extra excited about this episode? You can find Josh as resident scholar on this show as soon as we can have him back, you can find Andrew on youtube as Pamphleteer or on Twitter as @Pamphlet_tyr, Brent is @berniejeb2020, Ty is @whythattyguy, and the podcast is @pfthhd. Links to everything else in the Twitter bio.
We started recording with the honest intention of avoiding the news for once and going through some nice recommendations for books, games, and other ways to occupy yourself while we’ve all got some extra time. Aaaaand that lasted about 45 seconds. We do focus mostly on media discussion/recommendations, spend a little too long doing an impromptu book club on Transmetropolitan, veer back off course into the impending doom of our society in the face of a soulless and incompetent political class and eventually wrangle the conversation back into game recommendations, some other reading suggestions, and a few musical mentions. The graphs Andrew referenced are at covidactnow.org. You can find us in Twitter @pfthhd, @whythattyguy, @BernieJeb2020, and @Pamhplet_tyr.
Well, we’re obviously covering COVID because, well, this is a podcast in March 2020. We discuss the capitalist toilet paper ration lines, opportunities for community support and defense, and get into some media recommendations to help everyone stay busy during the downtime. Andrew has asked that the following addendum be added to what he says toward the end: “Andrew says if you like player of games enough to continue the series you can read book 1 if you want but skip use of weapons/book 3” because “it’s not bad bad but it’s not good lol.”We also reiterated some information about NSAID/Advil/Ibuprofen being counter-indicated that (as we insinuated with the whole “we’re not doctors” disclaimer) seems to have been incorrect based on recent WHO statements. Find us on Twitter @pfthhd, follow us on Facebook, or contact any of the hosts on any social media channel for
Just the three of us, we can make it if we try, and we sure do try to avoid the inevitable outbursts regarding Biden and, probably even worse, Warren’s non-endorsement. You know us, we definitely indulge and spend our fair share of time (and then some) in that territory, but we also get into some decently substantive discussions of meaningful self-determination v. neoliberal notions of “freedom” and “democracy.” It’s a must listen and, if we do say so ourselves, more on the PFT stride than we’ve been in awhile. But no listening until you do your Bernie duties. You’re probably a millennial. Do some texting at berniesanders.com/text. Make good use of that pathological attachment to your cellular devices. If you’d like us to harass you further about hitting the streets for Bernie, find us @pfthhd, e-mail us at politicalfuntimehappyhour@gmail.com, find Andrew @pamphlet_tyr, Brent @BernieJeb2020, and Ty @WhyThatTyGuy. We recorded this episode post-Nevada-debate, but pre-Iowa-caucus, and yes that’s how we reckon time now. Yeah, I hate us, too. It’s Andrew, Brent & Ty, joined by Michael for a very debate-centric episode. But we squeeze in some nerdery, a check in on our good friend Dr. Crawdad, and Brent subjects us to some of the worst mind-melting takes he dredged from pro-Bloomberg Facebook groups. There’s some exploration of the ‘Bernie Bro’ line and much more. Get in touch with us via @pfthhd, on Facebook, or by emailing politicalfuntimehappyhour@gmail.com.
Bernie won Iowa. Bernie won New Hampshire. We recorded. We lost a recording. We recorded again. That about sums it up, and in this episode Andrew (@pamphlet_tyr), Brent (@berniejeb2020), and Ty (@whythattyguy) are joined by Grem (@gremisonline) to wade through the ballots and bullshit. We discuss the fallout post-Iowa, how stupid the coverage of Bernie’s vote share was in Iowa, and more. You can also hear Ty start a small fire in the middle of the recording, ‘cause we like to live on the edge here in our various living room studios.Have thoughts, angry corrections, or anything else we should hear? Brent (@epislonmalesjwcuck), Andrew (@PamphleterAndCo), and Ty (@WhyThatTyGuy) are back just before Iowa to, in a total reversal, have Brent tell Ty why the process matters. We rail about Bloomberg, Ty recants his Nate Neutrality, and we barely even make it to the Rogan madness.
Long story short, we get too high and shout a lot. But there's a lot worth shouting about. Sorry it's a little out of date, we recorded this last week so the Iran news was a little hotter and Warren hadn't pulled her little stunt, so we'll get into that in the next episode.
Brent (@epislonmalesjwcuck), Andrew (@PamphleterAndCo), and Ty (@WhyThatTyGuy) run through some of the latest news, try to make sense of British politics from various distances across “the pond,” definitely watch the Biden “Listen, fat…” clip, and witness the slow loss of Andrew’s mind (and keyboard) as both are soaked with icy mulled wine. Find us on Twitter @pfthhd, DM for a discord link, and follow us on Facebook for tales of Brent’s internet war on Boomers, ok?
Justin Lecea joined us to tell us about his run in Texas' 20th Congressional District. It's Andrew, Brent and Ty this time around for a bit of a roundup on the democratic primary, the recent wave of elections, and we're actually kind of optimistic. If you want to reach us, you can Like us on Facebook, email us @ politicalfuntimehappyhour@gmail.com, or hit us up on Twitter @pfthhd.
Recorded 9/27/19, we had to talk through the first wave of real impeachment news. Lots of talk about what it means, how/if it matters, and when we should expect 3AM "Hey u up" dick pics from the President of the United States. We run through some of the latest primary dynamics (Don't worry, we get to Biden's Corn Pop catastrophe), and as usual, lose the news thread as we argue the underlying principles and call for guillotines. Last month, Political Fun Time's hometown of Modesto, CA experienced the world's very first "straight pride" event, organized by far-right chiropractor/failed political candidate Don J.
