The chief foreign correspondent of The Sunday Times and bestselling author of ‘I am Malala' and ‘The Girl From Aleppo' visits the South West. Christina Lamb's work is defined by determination and curiosity to vividly convey life in areas of danger and conflict. How else would the rest of us know about the injustice, the violence, but also the hope that can be found in those dark places? What is the point of bearing witness to the atrocities of war? What difference can journalism make? As one of Britain's leading foreign correspondents, Christina Lamb has never wavered from giving a voice to the unsung heroes of war, often women like the cyclists in Kabul, the Zimbabwean lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa, and the famous Malala. In this talk, Christina Lamb speaks about the defining moments of her career as an author and journalist: travelling with the Mujahidin, the resistance fighting Soviet occupation in Afghanistan during the Cold War, being in a 360 Taliban ambush, and surviving a bus bombing at an assassination attempt on Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. After 38 years of reporting from the most dangerous places on earth, Christina shares why she still goes to war, asking what we can learn about humans, conflict, and resilience. CHRISTINA LAMB Author and Foreign Correspondent Christina Lamb is one of Britain's leading foreign journalists as well as a bestselling author. Her despatches with the Afghan mujaheddin fighting the Soviet Union saw her named Young Journalist of the Year at the age of 22. She has since reported everywhere from Iraq to Ukraine, Israel to Zimbabwe and been awarded Foreign Correspondent of the Year seven times as well as Europe's top war reporting prize, the Prix Bayeux, the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from both the Society of Editors and Women in Journalism as well as the Chesney Gold Medal for promoting the understanding of war, previously awarded to Henry Kissinger and Winston Churchill. She has always particularly focused on what war does to women, and her book Our Bodies, Their Battlefields about sexual violence in conflict was described by leading historian Antony Beevor as ‘the most powerful book' he had ever read and recently recommended by Queen Camilla in a speech. She has written ten books including co-authoring the international bestseller I Am Malala. She is a Global envoy for UN Education Cannot Wait, Honorary Fellow of University College Oxford, on the board of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, and an Associate of the Imperial War Museum and was awarded an OBE in 2013.

We take another Extreme detour into the 3rd brand and this time the action is hot. We see prime Mike Awesome, Sandman, Dusty, RVD, Rhyno, Dreamer and so many more. Good story, good matches and a near death experience. For halftime I give some brief WrestleMania 41 thoughts.
For a quick stop at Johnny's House... When did something happen throughout the day that you just didn't plan on happening? Are you living dangerously? Not washing your fruit before eating them? Not wash your clothes before wearing it?

The unbelievable true story of John Lee Bishop, a former megachurch pastor who ended up running drugs for the Sinaloa Cartel. For thirty years, John Lee Bishop was a pastor. Along the way, he learned that everyone does stupid things. We lie to our families. We lie to ourselves. We take long lunch breaks and sneak cigarettes when we said we'd quit. Sometimes, we take a sabbatical from our nice, comfortable life as a pastor and start running drugs for the Sinaloa Carte then get caught and spend five years in federal prison.Okay, that last one might just apply to John. But it does make for one hell of a story. In The Church of Living Dangerously, John tells that story in full for the first time-and you don't know the half of it. Along the way, he brings readers along for the harrowing ride from the rough small town in Washington where he was born all the way to the dirty villages in Mexico where he fell in with some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet. There are backyard fight clubs where John learned to take a punch, the abandoned K-Mart where he used to preach every Sunday (sometimes with the help of wild animals), and the drug dens where he almost lost his life ten times over. It's a story that seems too wild to be true. But it is true-and John has the scars, both literal and figurative, to prove it. Ride along with John as he gets arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border and learn the story of his life in all its rough, stupid glory of guns, drugs, tigers, bare-knuckle boxing matches, and prison riots. John has learned a lot of important lessons about hardship and redemption and family, and what it means to live dangerously-and to experience another chance at life.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

What happens when war leaves millions stranded, stateless, and unwanted? In this episode of the Review of Democracy podcast, host Imogen Bayley discusses with renowned historian Sheila Fitzpatrick her latest book, LostSouls: Soviet Displaced Persons and the Birth of the Cold War. Drawing from newly uncovered archival research, Fitzpatrick explores the lives of Soviet displaced persons—those who found themselves outside the USSR at the endof World War II and refused to return, despite intense Soviet pressure. Their fates became entangled in Cold War politics, as Western governments redefined them from war victims to symbols of anti-communist resistance. From forcedrepatriations and identity manipulation to the geopolitical power struggles that shaped global refugee policy, this discussion reveals how history's displaced individuals exercised agency in ways that continue to shape modernmigration debates. Listen to our podcast on exile, political propaganda, and the lasting impact of Cold War resettlement strategies. Sheila Fitzpatrick is the author of many books, including On Stalin's Team: The Years of Living Dangerously in Soviet Politics (Princeton), The Shortest History of the Soviet Union, and The Russian Revolution. She is professor of history at the Institute of Humanities and Social Science at the AustralianCatholic University and Distinguished Service Professor Emerita at the University of Chicago. Imogen Bayley: Imogen Bayley is a historian and migration studies scholar who earned her PhD in ComparativeHistory from Central European University and is currently, as a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Her book, Postwar Migration Policy and the Displaced of the British Zone in Germany, 1945–1951.Fighting for a Future, was recently published by Palgrave Macmillan.

With his unhinged foreign policy pronouncements, including demands that Greenland and the Panama Canal be handed over to the US, and vague threats to annex Canada, Donald Trump is already setting governments on edge. How will the world cope with an America First foreign policy where chaos and uncertainty are features not bugs? And as the self-styled dealmaker vows to bring a swift end to conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, what do his nominations to key defence and security roles – among them hawks, libertarians and a TV news host – tell us about his priorities? Joining Gavin Esler to discuss the ‘known unknowns' is Amy Mackinnon, national security and intelligence correspondent at Foreign Policy magazine. • This episode of This Is Not A Drill is supported by Incogni, the service that keeps your private information safe, protects you from identity theft and keeps your data from being sold. Co-Host Warwick Cairns (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/cairns) Well, you've heard me talk about how we as men tend to slip into the 'suburban sleepwalk' in this life. Everything is safe, sanitized and dinner comes from the supermarket or a fast-food joint. So along comes Warwick Cairns, author of a book called How To Live Dangerously, which exhorts us as men get back to our roots. That is, a life with a whole lot more danger in it. This is, of course, a wildly controversial stance in today's Western world. But our masculine nature craves it, and Warwick is still here to tell the story, so clearly what he talks about can be satisfied in us without killing ourselves over it. To start things off, Warwick wastes no time getting to how so much of what we think is 'dangerous' is actually relatively safe, while plenty of what we think is safe is actually pretty hazardous. What is it that distorts so many people's perceptions in this regard? And how has danger itself evolved within very recent human history? Of course, that has to affect our perception of it in principle as well. I mean, has post-modernity actually created its own form of 'danger' even as the world at large has gotten so much safer? All of that said, Warwick's book is on how to bring MORE danger into our lives. What does that mean? What is it he is actually advocating? And what is he personally doing that's so dangerous at age 62...and at what price? On the other hand, what's up with those guys who live incredibly dangerously and still somehow die of old age? And what's the true 'low hanging fruit' for people who want to start living dangerously? And last, but certainly not least, how dangerous is it really to approach women and ask them out? Tonight's guest is Stephen Spencer-Chapman, a veteran of the British Army's elite Parachute Regiment, and former commanding officer of the Red Devils parachute display team. While we certainly cover some of Stephen's life story, including his time in the British military, the bulk of the discussion is about his inspiring grandfather, Freddy Spencer Chapman. Episode 41 History Highlights: 1). The Shetland Bus — a lifeline for Norwegian citizens escaping Nazi oppression and a highway for British Special Operations Executive (SOE) officers linking up with Norwegian commandos for sabotage operations. For more info, read this article published in 2019. 2). Freddy Spencer Chapman's “Living Dangerously” book about his 1930 polar exploration in Greenland, which aimed to uncover an air route between North America and Europe by way of the Arctic. Here, Freddy and 13 others spent 13 months living with the Eskimos, hunting seals, and fending off territorial polar bears. 3). Stephen tells us about his personal experiences meeting the Dalai Lama. Freddy previously made a diplomatic mission to Tibet in 1936. 4). Freddy's 3 ½ years in the Malaysia jungle fighting and evading the Japanese as a member of British SOE's Force 136. (Read more here: To Hell and Back Again: The Epic Adventures of British Commando Freddy Spencer Chapman). 5). “The Mad Fortnight” — Freddy and two other SOE commandos launched offensive action against the Japanese. They developed tactics to move as a small team and traveled at night along the Japanese supply lines. The SOE commandos would position themselves so one person would engage the enemy — often with IEDs, sticky bombs, and grenades — as a distraction and a second commando would move to another position to make them appear larger than they were. The three commandos wrecked 7 trains, cut a railway line in 60 pieces, and killed scores of enemy troops. In the end, the Japanese thought this was a battalion of men and sent regiments of soldiers to find them. 6). Freddy's escape through the jungle — where he was captured and fled twice — and into the sea to rendezvous with a submarine. 7). Freddy's legacy and The Chapman's Challenge adventure race held annually in Malaysia. The race follows part of the route Freddy took to escape the jungle and get picked up by submarine. 8). History of the Parachute Regiment. 9). History of the Red Devils and tribute to the late Dean “Waldo” Walton. 10). Stephen's experiences with military transition. Jessica Pan hated social gatherings - she cried when her friends threw her a surprise birthday party, and was even too scared to give a speech at her own wedding. Jessica was a hardcore introvert - and it was making her sad. Extroverts find it easier to experience the joy that comes with social interactions - but that doesn't mean introverts are doomed to lives that lack such fun. Jessica read some research that suggested introverts can learn to enjoy being more outgoing - so decided to turn her social life around. You can read more of Jessica's story in her book: Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come: An Introvert's Year of Living Dangerously. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
