En Francia, el 20% de las costas se ven afectadas por la erosión costera, un fenómeno natural pero que se agrava con el cambio climático. Reportaje en el suroeste de Francia, donde el mar avanza cada año tierra adentro, lo que obliga a derribar edificios. Mareas y vientos erosionan cada año las costas francesas del Atlántico. Aquí en Labenne, una localidad costera del suroeste de Francia expuesta a las tormentas invernales, este fenómeno ya es palpable. En la playa, un búnker alemán de la Segunda Guerra Mundial está medio sepultado en la arena, empujada por vientos de más de 100 km por hora. "La muralla del Atlántico de la Segunda Guerra Mundial es una serie de búnkers construidos en las cimas de las dunas. Hoy en día, muchas de estas construcciones se encuentran en medio de las playas o incluso en el agua. Son los testigos de la erosión costera en Francia. Se observa en muchos puntos de la costa de nuestro país y muestra el retroceso de la línea de costa”, indica Nicolas Bernon ingeniero especializado en riesgos naturales. A unos metros de las dunas, la caseta de salvavidas también está condenado a desaparecer. Las autoridades locales optaron por construir otro edificio más alejado de la playa. "Sabemos muy bien que incluso el estacionamiento de la playa está condenado a desaparecer. Lo mismo pasará con los comercios que están cerca de la playa. Habrá que tener en cuenta este avance natural. ¡La naturaleza sigue su curso!”, admite, resignada, Stéphanie Chessoux, alcaldesa de Labenne. A medio kilómetro más al norte en la costa, llegamos a una zona donde la erosión costera produce efectos aún más espectaculares. Aquí, la arena rodea casi por completo el centro marino de Labenne, un antiguo sanatorio construido en 1924 para que enfermos y ancianos pudieran respirar el aire saludable de la costa Atlántica. Un siglo después, este edificio inmenso, construido con hormigón y amianto o asbesto —un material peligroso para la salud—, está cercado por la arena de la playa que avanza poco a poco tierra adentro. “Aquí el océano avanzó y el edificio se deterioró debido a la proximidad del océano. La arena y el aire salino degradaron todo el metal que había dentro del hormigón. Algunas partes fueron abandonadas y quedaron en desuso. Aquí en Aquitania, se dice que, por ejemplo, se pueden perder hasta 2 m de dunas costeras al año. Por ejemplo, hoy, tal vez perdamos 6 m si lo peor de la tormenta tiene lugar durante la marea alta", explica Laure Guilhem Tauzin del Instituto de conservación del Litoral de Aquitanía Las autoridades optaron por desmantelar el edificio corroído por el aire marino: "La idea era, en primer lugar, restaurar la naturaleza, evitar la contaminación marina a medio plazo y también impedir que un inversor que hubiera calculado mal sus costes de inversión volviera a reconstruir este edificio que habría tenido que ser demolido quince o veinte años después", apunta Laure Guilhem Tauzin. Los 12.000 m² de hormigón y asfalto darán paso a un proyecto de restauración de la duna. El instituto de conservación del litoral francés adquirió el terreno para devolverlo a su entorno natural. “Una empresa de ingeniería ecológica vendrá a sembrar plantas nativas de la duna para consolidarla. Mantenemos la duna porque captura la arena. Cuando hay tormentas, impide que la arena se desplace tierra adentro. Es lo que llamamos soluciones basadas en la naturaleza. No queremos luchar contra la erosión costera porque consideramos que es un fenómeno natural”, detalla Laure Guilhem-Tauzin.  A pocos metros, una antigua capilla blanca y de techo de tejas anaranjadas corre el mismo peligro de desaparecer en las dunas. Y en Capbreton, el municipio colindante, una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales quedará sumergida por el mar en unos años. Escuche este reportaje en versión audio: El cambio climático, la otra amenaza de las próximas décadas El fenómeno de la erosión costera ya afecta al 20% de las costas francesas. Y a ello se suma el cambio climático cuyos efectos agravarán aún más el retroceso de la línea de costa. El exceso de gases de efecto invernadero emitidos por las actividades humanas provoca una dilatación del océano que aumentará el nivel del mar en unos 60 cm en Francia de aquí a finales del siglo. El fenómeno es estudiado de cerca por Nicolas Bernon, ingeniero especializado en riesgos naturales en el BRGM, instituto francés de investigación geológica. "En los cinturones de dunas, muy presentes en nuestro litoral de Gironda y de las Landas, hemos medido retrocesos de entre 1 y 3 metros al año en promedio. Algunas zonas retroceden hasta seis u ocho metros al año”, constata el ingeniero “Por ejemplo, en el Médoc, se prevé que en 2050 el nivel del mar sea entre 20 y 25 cm superior al actual.  Y a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XXI, la subida del nivel del mar va a ser una de las principales causas de erosión costera. En 2100 el nivel del mar será a 60 o 70 cm más alto que a principios de siglo. Eso sí que es significativo. El cambio climático aumentará un 20% el nivel del mar”, prevé Nicolas Bernon. De aquí a 2100, Francia se prepara para perder 500.000 hectáreas de litoral, lo que equivale a 700.000 canchas de fútbol. Una tendencia que obliga a adaptarse. Y en muchos casos se opta por soluciones naturales para proteger la costa de las tormentas.

Dr. Costas Karatzas, CEO, Director, and Co-Founder of Acesis BioMed, is focused on developing a novel treatment for low testosterone in men, an oral peptide that stimulates the body to restore its own natural testosterone production. The therapy's mechanism differs from current testosterone replacement therapies and avoids the side effect of infertility seen in younger men using traditional TRT, which shuts down natural hormone and sperm production. The differentiation being everything else marketed provides the body with exogenous testosterone, whereas in our case, we teach the body to go back to its old memory and generate or restore its own testosterone in a natural way." "Men can develop low testosterone because of the aging process, but this is a wrong idea. Low testosterone is not just an aging problem. It's true that we as men lose testosterone from the age of 30, about 1-1.5%, which is circulating in our blood. By the time we reach sixties or seventies, we could have probably 50% to 60% of the testosterone levels we had while we were at the age of 30 years old. Globally, it's estimated that about 40% of adult men may have suboptimal testosterone levels, especially if you include men with other health issues like diabetes, and we mentioned obesity. So, for older men, this is a big demographic, and as the global male population ages, the number of men with low T is increasing. Interestingly enough, the FDA has only approved the current marketed products of testosterone for men who are between the ages of 30 and 65.
