Real Madrid kept up their pursuit of league leaders Barcelona but only just, needing a 100th minute penalty from Kylian Mbappe to spare their blushes at home to Rayo Vallecano, in a match which saw Vinicius Jr booed despite scoring a worldie and Jude Bellingham leaving the pitch in tears clutching his hamstring. Gary and Alex look at why the atmosphere continues to be so fractious at the Bernabeu. Barcelona kept themselves ahead of the rest with a 3-1 away at Elche in a game in which they spurned plenty of chances to make the scoreline even greater, goals from Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford were enough for the three points. With the league being so tight and the knock-out stages of the Champions League upon us who do Gary and Alex think has the squad capable of winning it all this season? There's also been more grumbling at Atletico Madrid as they struggled to a 0-0 draw at Levante, leaving Diego Simeone calling for reinforcements in the transfer window, but after fifteen years in charge have the fans decided it's time for a change? Join us as we size up the competition and evaluate if England can truly outmaneuver giants like Spain and Argentina on the world's biggest stage. 2026 FIFA World Cup, England National Team, Thomas Tuchel, Harry Kane, Three Lions
Real Madrid returned to winning ways at the weekend when they beat Levante 2-0 but the Bernabeu crowd singled out Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde for boos and whistles as they continued to express their displeasure at Xabi Alonso's sacking. Gary And Alex react to the scenes in Madrid and the challenges facing new manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Barcelona's nine-game winning streak came to an end with defeat at Real Sociedad in an incident-packed game featuring disallowed goals, overturned penalties, and a brilliant performance from La Real's goalkeeper. This result means Barca are only one point ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, but there was some positive news for Marcus Rashford as he got himself on the scoresheet. Finally, we look at Villarreal's fading hopes of muscling their way into the title race after defeat at an improving Real Betis and there's a look at Atletico Madrid's Alexander Sorloth proving some of his doubters wrong with a superb winning goal against Alaves. Matchday 20 proved why we love LaLiga: drama, surprises and competitiveness. Matt Clark (@MattClark_08) and Román De Arquer (@Aeroslavee) review a terrific weekend. A tumultuous week for Real Madrid ended positively. After the Bernabéu crowd made their discontented feelings vociferously known on Saturday lunchtime, Los Blancos laboured to a rather uncomfortable 2-0 win over lowly Levante for Álvaro Arbeloa's first win in charge. After fielding questions about “Florentino dimisión” chants, the boss angered fans further by staunchly defending his President, claiming those who want Pérez to resign aren't genuine Madridistas. This victory put pressure on Barcelona, who lined up without Raphinha and lost their winning run. La Real continued their incredible – albeit fortuitous – start under Pellegrino Matarazzo after beating Barça 2-1 through a combination of goalkeeping excellence, luck and tight VAR calls. Just 60 seconds after Marcus Rashford had equalised, Gonçalo Guedes restored their lead. Despite accumulating over 3.5 xG and 25 shots (including five to the woodwork), there was no way past Álex Remiro, who reminded everyone why he is a worthy member of Luis de la Fuente's triumvirate. The gap at the top is now just a solitary point. ¡¡¡Hay Liga!!!Real Betis beat Villarreal to take a big step towards European football next season, but we ask why there is still some dissatisfaction among the fanbase. On Friday night, Girona continued their incredible resurgence by beating Espanyol in a Catalan derby, courtesy of two Vanat penalties. Los Pericos have had a rough start to the year, but are still well placed.Onto Part Two, we focus on the compactness of the table from 8th down to 18th. Real Sociedad are ten places above Alavés, but only five points clear of their fellow Basques.Mallorca took a huge step forward by winning a thriller against Athletic Club. Jagoba Arrasate will be thanking his giant Kosovan Vedat Muriqi who scored a hat-trick to tame Los Leones. Only Kylian Mbappé has scored more this season, and Muriqi is priceless for the island side. Three goals and three precious points. We reflect on that as well as Athletic's malaise. With a crucial set of fixtures ahead, is this Ernesto Valverde's last season in charge? Osasuna won by the same scoreline but in even more dramatic fashion. Trailing twice to Real Oviedo, it seemed like the Asturian side might finally get their win. But alas, Ante Budimir equalised twice and then Víctor Muñoz broke hearts with a 92nd-minute winner. Even when they score twice, they can't even draw, let alone win.Rayo are another club looking over their shoulder after they were well beaten by Euro-chasing Celta. They won their third in a row to cement 7th spot and put pressure on those above them.Valencia stunned the Coliseum with a late, well-constructed winner with their only shot on target of the game. Getafe are in freefall now, with just one point since the end of November. Alavés made it hard for Atleti, but ultimately came away from the capital with nothing, and they slipped into the drop zone. But, given the tightness of the table, things can change extremely quickly. A relegation battle for the ages is in prospect. You can keep up to date with all our content at lllonline.substack.com. Manchester United are back baby. Rest in Piss the bad times 2013-2025. This is definitely a REAL dawn as Ruben Amorin beat their bogey team Brighton 4-2 at home to make 3 consecutive wins in the Premier League for Man United. What next for The Red Devils and, more importantly, what happens to that guy when he cuts his hair? Smart money is on a sharp veer into the far right.Liverpool continue to slide down the table as Brentford's long throws and pressure cooker tactics consigned Liverpool to another defeat in the Premier League. I explore the two questions that persist about Mohamaed Salah and Florian Wirtz. Can they play together, and if not, who should be dropped? The man who needs to make this decision is Arne Slot, who seems unable to reconcile with the fact that teams have changed their tactics this year when facing the champions. The classico between Real Madrid vs Barcelona had all the elements of one of the great games between these two clubs. A galaxy of stars for real madrid vs a team of uber talented La Masia teens and 5'8 and below men (Except for on loan Marcus Rashford) for Barcelona, Plenty of goals red card,s and pr,e pos,t and during the match shithousery from both sides. I recall this game via YouTube short highlights and place both sides in one of three categories of humbleness.Support the showWant to support us and also get some sweet bonus exclusive pods? Dharmesh Sheth is joined by John Cross, Riath Al-Samarrai and Jack Rosser to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We start with Liverpool's fourth consecutive Premier League defeat — a run that John describes as “mind-blowing.” So, what's gone wrong with their defence this season? Attention then shifts to Manchester United, who beat Brighton for a third consecutive win — the first under Ruben Amorim. Is this yet another false dawn, or does this one feel different? Riath remains unconvinced.Next up is West Ham United. After kicking off the weekend with a third straight league loss to Leeds, Jack doesn't hold back — calling Nuno's team “unbalanced, old, and slow.”We then move to league leaders Arsenal, flying high after six straight wins in all competitions and a dominant 4–0 midweek victory over Atlético Madrid. John says it's shaping up to be a “spectacular” season for Arteta. We're also joined by The Athletic's Dermot Corrigan to chat all things El Clásico. Vicky Gomersall is joined by Charlie Wyett, Jonathan Northcroft and The Athletic's Jack Pitt-Brooke to reflect on the weekend's sporting action. We begin with looking at the pressure Ange Postecoglou is under. Jonathan questions whether Forest are worried about league position and want solidity. Charlie is surprised some of the fans have turned on Ange already. What's gone so wrong for Ange? We then turn to England news, firstly to Jude Bellingham and the criticism he has received for his lack of presence with the press; Charlie questions whether he would be a good future England Captain but considers Declan Rice a better candidate. Then to Elliot Anderson, and Jack praises how natural he looks in a position so important to Tuchel's side ahead of the World Cup. And on the UEFA committee's meeting to revive interest in the International break, we ask whether the no-jeopardy games are too boring. We also look at The Telegraph's story that Strasbourg have turned into a Chelsea feeder-club. Jonathan explains the fans' reason to protest; how multi-club ownership can affect the lesser clubs involved and how the fans believe their identity is being diluted. Next, news that Barcelona want to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal; Jonathan believes £25m is a great price in today's market for the Spanish side, but bad-selling business from Man United. We move on to Mo Salah's current form; Jack considers last season's Liverpool playing to Salah's strengths, whilst this year transitioning with Slot's new signings and tactics. We then explore the story that Europe's elite clubs answer to nobody as they carve up football's billions. Jonathan criticises the distribution of funds, with £6billion coming in for Champions League sides, but lesser clubs not getting parity with very little filtering down to clubs missing out. And finally, we conclude this week's pod on a sombre note, with the sad news that England Rugby star Lewis Moody is diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease.
