In September 2016, Terence Crutcher was shot and killed by Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby. Eight months later, Shelby was found not guilty of first-degree manslaughter and the case has been expunged from her record. Tiffany Crutcher created a foundation in her brother's name focused on criminal justice and policing reform. She joined Amna Nawaz to discuss the foundation's efforts. The fathers of Michael Brown and Terence Crutcher, as well as George Floyd's uncle, reflect on the moment that forever altered their families' lives following the killing of their loved ones by police officers in the US. Poet and songwriter Cornelius Eady navigates sobering and moving first hand accounts of what it means to raise a black man in America today. He learns how three father figures have coped in the face of harrowing loss.
Terence Crutcher had his hands up and was retreating when he was shot and killed by a Tulsa police officer in 2016. His sister, Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, has made it her mission to enact serious reforms to the justice system, in an effort to prevent needless killings of black people by police.
Ambulance, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González, had all the ingredients of a Michael Bay film: Beautiful cinematography Shaky camera work Fast editing Real stunts and action Extremely attractive people in everyday jobs. Just Because it has all the same ingredients as other classic Bay films such as The Rock, Transformers, or The Island, doesn't make the movie good. I think he left out a few eggs for something. I had a blast watching this movie, but not in the way it was intended. I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud so hard from my gut. The premise starts out strong and ripe for a Michael Bay film; a heist gone wrong, a cop shot, and the only way out is in the ambulance transporting said cop. They need to keep the officer alive, so they take a paramedic hostage, and chaos ensues. After this point, for me the logic of the movie never made sense, and made it difficult to take this movie seriously, at least as serious as you can take a Michael Bay movie. I knew going in that the action would be over the top, the camera would never stop moving, and actors would deliver lines like David Caruso on CSI (yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) What ultimately did it for me was the contradicting logic. These guys are fighting as hard as they can to keep this wounded officer alive because, if they become cop killers, they know there is no way they will make it out alive, or they'll go to prison for the rest of their life. But, during the pursuit, as police chase them around LA, they don't hold back on firing guns at helicopters and police cars, and ramming them off bridges at 70 miles per hour. Likewise, the Police keep saying they have to be careful because a brother in blue is on board, yet they use the harshest tactics that could easily kill everyone in the ambulance. The best way to describe this movie is like the video game Grand Theft Auto, with a 5 star wanted level. In the game the more “wanted” you are, the harder the police are on you. At 5 stars, swat and military come after you, and they're hell bent on killing you with extreme prejudice. The drone cinematography set this movie apart from other Michael Bay movies. Many shots featured stunning visuals, but some seemed unnecessary. I doubt this is the last we've seen of the excessive drone shots Occasionally I can get behind over the top action and illogical sequences, however, what ultimately hurt this film was its depiction of police violence, and violence on police. Our nation is divided right now with situations like what happened to George Floyd. And even in Tulsa, where the Brothers Brotastic are from, there's a controversial police encounter involving the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, as well as the death of Tulsa Police Sergeant Craig Johnson who's killer had been convicted the week we saw this movie. These situations, along with countless others across the nation made some scenes in Ambulance hard to watch, and they take you out of the movie at times. Andrew gives this movie 1 ticket; he's glad he saw the movie in theaters, but is not rushing to see this movie again anytime soon. Philip gives this movie 2 tickets; although he sees the flaws that Andrew sees, they are not enough to take him away from the joy and experience of seeing a Michael Bay movie on the Big Screen. He knew it was a movie filled with Bayhem and no much else, and it delivered.

Three hundred and thirty-one days ago, Derek Chauvin put his knee on the neck of George Floyd for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. George Floyd took his last breath on his stomach, hands cuffed behind his back. His death, captured on cell phone video by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, sparked a summer of unrest and calls to abolish the police around the country. This week, after a televised trial and around 11 hours of deliberation, the jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of all three charges he faced: second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. It was the first time in Minnesota state history that a white police officer has been held accountable for killing a Black man. It was the first time that America could call Derek Chauvin what many have long believed he is. Murderer. With this verdict, what has been achieved? And what work remains? Shaquille Brewster, correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC, explains the reforms activists in Minneapolis hope to see next. And Shaquille and Trymaine talk about what it has been like covering this case as Black journalists. And in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Trymaine sits down with Tiffany Crutcher, whose brother Terence Crutcher was shot and killed by police in 2016. They talk about how the families of people who have been killed by police are working together to push for greater police accountability and a system that brings us closer to justice. For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. My guest on this episode had a very busy and productive 2020, and for that we recognized her as one of our Tulsans of the Year in our January issue. Dr. Tiffany Crutcher helped launch three weeks of protests in response to police brutality, she helped put together a Juneteenth celebration that brought lots of joy to the community the day before Donald Trump visited Tulsa and she helped out her friend Greg Robinson in his mayoral campaign that saw him finish second. She continued her work with the Terence Crutcher Foundation, which she founded and serves as executive director. She helped restore the home of a 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre survivor and in December, Hollywood star Kerry Washington donated $20,000 to the nonprofit, which Crutcher then distributed to 10 local charities. We covered a lot of topics in a Zoom conversation recorded the second week of January. She recaps her year and what's driving her in 2021 as we approach the 100th commemoration of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She's one of many who feel reparations are owed to the survivors and descendants. While many wonder what that would cost, Crutcher says it's about more than dollar signs. It's been over four years since her brother Terence was killed by a Tulsa Police officer. She discusses how she continues to fight for criminal justice reform and shares her thoughts on what she wants to see from the City of Tulsa in terms of changes in policing. Crutcher also reflects on the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection and how it reminded her of the unspeakable horror of what occurred in Tulsa on May 31 and June 1, 1921.She also talks about what it means to be featured as one of the many rising Black community leaders in a new mural created by Black Moon Tulsa. It can be seen at the Metro by T-Mobile at 4704 N. Peoria across the street from McClain High School. It's a powerful conversation that captures Crutcher's passion for social justice and the need for changes to be made in Tulsa to further unify our community. Following that conversation I'll share a new song from Tulsa rocker's Golden Ones. More on them later. Let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Dr. Tiffany Crutcher. ******* To close out this episode, Golden Ones is sharing their song, "No Plan" off their debut album "Nowhere Fast."Writer Julie Watson had this to say about the album in our January issue:"This debut album, released Nov. 27, takes its cues from the best of ’70s rock and roll — plenty of energy, lots of glam and no shortage of infectious melodies. Sarah Frick is perfectly at ease fronting the quartet with her powerful vocals, backed by Sean Fisher on guitar, husband Jesse Frick on bass and Jay Sullivan on drums." Here is Golden Ones with "No Plan."
Caitlin and Philip are joined by Dr. Tiffany T. Crutcher as part of our series of conversations on Race and Religion. Dr. Crutcher was recently thrust into the national spotlight following the death of her twin brother, Terence Crutcher, who was shot by a police officer in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while holding his hands in the air. In our conversation we discuss her brother, the work of the Terence Crutcher Foundation, the role of faith in her life, and more.

President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation ending slavery on January 1, 1963. But it wasn’t until more than two years later – on June 19, 1965 – that enslaved people in the state of Texas were finally told that they were free. The anniversary of that day has become known as Juneteenth. This Juneteenth, 2020, America is in the midst of a racial reckoning. A pandemic is disproportionately killing Black Americans, and violence against Black people continues to be caught on camera, sparking cries for change.Into America host Trymaine Lee convened a special panel for NBC News Now called Can You Hear Us Now: Juneteenth. He and his panelists wrestled with America’s core question of freedom, and whether this dream can and will ever be a reality for Black Americans.Guests included: Dr. Peniel Joseph, from the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at UT-Austin; playwright and actress Anna Deavere Smith; Tiffany Crutcher, whose twin brother Terence Crutcher killed by police in 2016; Wes Moore, of the Robin Hood Foundation; and NBC BLK reporter Janell Ross. For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica.Further Reading:Into an American Uprising: Can You Hear Us Now?How Juneteenth's history is being reshaped as America reckons with its pastFrom Juneteenth to the Tulsa massacre: What isn't taught in classrooms has a profound impactFrom Amazon to JPMorgan, here's the list of companies honoring Juneteenth

This week, we feature two segments on the show: an interview with a Russian anarchist about the recent ramping up of torture and repression by the FSB in Russia against anarchists and anti-fascists (00:14:13); and a chat with Patrick Strickland, author of "Alerta! Alerta!: Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle” (00:34:17); plus anarchist prisoner Sean Swain on his bid to "Build The Wall" (00:08:27) FSB Torture of Radicals First up, Bursts spoke with Tania, a Russian anarchist, a member of the crew who runs the RUpression website documenting Russian state agencies like the FSB's use of torture to extract stories to build conspiracies to legitimize their tightening of restrictions on public gatherings, chill the political and media landscape, and sustain a state of sense of fear among the populace. We discuss the death of Mikhail Zhlobitsky in a bombing of an FSB office in October, the current state of anarchist organizing in Russia, and the past political repression since 2012 and the cases in Pensa and the 2017 "The Network" conspiracy case (which we've spoken of in this show in the past here and here). In February 2019, a situation unfolded where Azat Miftakhov disappeared, came back tortured, and accused of taking part in an anarchist terrorist plot. Azat was released by court order only to be re-arrested by another police agency (well documented in this crimethInc article, alongside some downloadable posters for pasting around your town). You can learn more about the case by reading and following rupression.com Patrick Strickland on European Anti-Fascism Secondly, William had the chance to interview Patrick Strickland, who is a journalist and author, about his recently released book "Alerta! Alerta! Snapshots of Europe's Anti-Fascist Struggle". This book follows the stories and lives of 5 European people who do broadly defined antifascist work or struggle. For this interview we talk about Strickland's journalism, the experiences of compiling this book, and about understanding elements on the far right that might enhance antifascism, in the so called US, Europe, and elsewhere. Follow him on Twitter @P_Strickland_ for news and upcoming projects! Announcements Show Up For Rayquan Borum! If you are in Charlotte NC tomorrow, Monday the 11th, consider showing up to support Rayquan Borum, who is a Black activist arrested during the Charlotte Uprising, a days long protest to mourn and rage against the police murder of Keith Lamont Scott in 2016. From charlotteuprising.com/statement : "The uprising in Charlotte is a direct response to sustained police and vigilante violence against Black people in this city and across the country: Keith Lamont Scott, Jonathan Ferrell, Aiyana Stanley, Jones, Tyre King, Korryn Gaines, Janisha Fonville, Terence Crutcher and so many more. These are names of victims we know and deeply mourn, understanding there are so many other people who have been unnecessarily taken from us." The arrest of Rayquan Borum was a direct attempt by police to frame Mr. Borum, and he is finally going to trial after 2 years being held in and out of solitary confinement. The trial will be held starts February 11th, and will start at 9:30am in room 5370 at the address 832 East Fourth Street Charlotte, NC, which is the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Federal Prison Postal Changes Survey Lawyers & activists doing prisoner support have been concerned with new Federal Bureau of Prisons' rules limiting the type of mail people in prison can receive -- for example, rules that people in federal prison can only get white paper / envelopes, and no cards or drawings. There is work being done to look into what is going on across the country on this issue. If you have heard anything, they'd love to hear about it. They are also trying to collect evidence of what is happening at all the different federal facilities. If you have any of the following (or if you feel comfortable asking for any of these types of things from people in prison you are in contact with), that would be super helpful, including: Any memos from federal prisons detailing new mail restrictions Any program statements from BoP detailing new mail restrictions Any Institutional Supplements from BoP detailing new mail restrictions Scans of federal mail rejections based on new restrictions (color of letter, color of envelope, use of mailing label, greeting card etc) Scans of envelopes with rejected stickers detailing reason for rejection Scans of grievances from prisoners regarding the mail restrictions If you are interested in potentially working with us around this issue, let the folks at Certain Days Calendar know, and they can reach out with info about their next meeting. Today’s episode is sponsored by Care Card, benefiting Family and Children’s Services.City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper gives us a debrief of why civilian oversight might be the next step to mend relations between community and police.Later on, Ian Swart from the Historical Society shares a spooky true crime story about a serial killer, a correspondence club, and a string of ex-husbands.So let’s talk, Tulsa.“I’m married to a cop for 25 years, so I have a unique perspective.”That’s District 1 City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper. In recent interviews with the Tulsa World, representatives from TPD has emphasized how much the department has changed its academy curriculum in recent years. Capt. Matt McCord, assistant director of training, says that these days, they look for recruits who are as interested in connecting with the community as they are in catching bad guys. McCord explained the department’s revamped training during a meeting of the Mayor’s Police and Community Coalition earlier this month. McCord acknowledges that the military-style “warrior” mentality just isn’t what’s best for Tulsa.Maj. Ryan Perkins, training director, took over the academy in June 2015 along with McCord. McCord and Perkins say empathy and cultural competency are paramount skills for recruits, and recent changes put a greater emphasis on de-escalation rather than knee-jerk self-defense. Implicit bias training, rolled out in a process through 2019, will be mandatory for every officer. But all of that’s to say, there’s still a long way to go, especially when the stakes are so high. And Vanessa Hall-Harper believes that the implementation of civilian oversight would help local law enforcement get even further in improving the relationship with the community. In the past few years, as police violence against unarmed black men has become a central topic in our national discussion on race and justice, Tulsa has tragically been in the national spotlight. The April 2015 shooting of Eric Harris by TCSO reserve deputy Robert Bates. The September 2016 shooting of Terence Crutcher by TPD officer Betty Shelby. Of course, the history of violence against black Tulsans goes back much further. Nearly 100 years after the Tulsa Race Massacre, Mayor GT Bynum announced earlier in October that the City would reopen an investigation into possible mass grave sites from the event. The announcement put Tulsa in the national spotlight once more, and Hall-Harper found herself fielding calls from international news outlets. All this, happening during her trip to Florida for the NACOLE conference.Another way to honor those who lost their lives in 1921 might also be to continue fighting for a more equitable city for all Tulsans. And reform of our local systems of justice is surely part of that equation. Vanessa Hall-Harper knows full well that this fight she’s picked is going to be a long and difficult one, but remains optimistic that positive change will be made — and must be made, for the well-being of the community. She remembers one poignant moment from the conference.https://www.tulsaei.org/https://www.tulsaei.org/themes/justice/https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/national/police-shootings-2018/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.9cf931a59583https://www.vox.com/cards/police-brutality-shootings-us/us-police-racism

Wiretaps, Russians, and Lies. Oh no! The Washington Post reported that the United Arab Emirates arranged a secret meeting last January between the Trump team and a Russian authority. This secret meeting took place 9 days before Inauguration Day. The Justice Department has announced that it will be reviewing all police reform agreements. There will be no further investigations of police brutality, signaling to cops everywhere that they may behave as curbside "Judge, Jury, and Executioners" whenever they please. An Iowa state representative, Republican Shannon Lundgren, proposed a bill that would compel women who miscarry after the 20th week of pregnancy to carry their dead fetuses to term. On Wednesday, the White House issued an executive order to establish a commision to combat drug addiction. The upshot: Whites will get rehab. Non-whites will go to prison. The Tulsa cop who killed unarmed Terence Crutcher blames him for his own death. On Monday, the Democracts claimed the votes necessary to block Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch. But this opens the door for the Republicans to go "nuclear." Last week, the Iowa legislature approved a bill that reverses local minimum wage increses that had already been approved. This is the first time a state has nullified local minimum wage ordinances. Are you surprised that the Republicans voted UNANIMOUSLY for the reversal. A black police officer who killed a 6 yr old white child during the pursuit of a criminal has been sentenced to 40 years. Why is it that officers can be held accountable when the officer is black and the victim is white, but not vice versa? Where is the justice for 7 yr old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, for example? In Mississippi, a cruel new bill has a lovely name (HOPE) but it is designed to bring more austerity and suffering to those who are already poor. Tues, April 4, 6pm Pacific

You can't dismantle the master's house using his tools. Keith Scott, a black man with traumatic brain injury, was shot dead immediately after getting out of his car at the command of the officers. Initially, the Charlotte PD refused to release the dash cam video, prompting widespread speculation of a coverup. Late last week, the video became available to the public. It's bad. William Bowers, a white homeless man in Castaic, CA, was shot dead by police after getting off his bicycle at the officers' command. Black Lives Matter protestors rallied for Bowers, demanding answers from the police. Where is the "All Lives Matter" crowd? They are suspiciously absent. Officer Betty Shelby was charged with 1st degree manslaughter last week in the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, a stranded motorist in Tulsa, OK. Officer Shelby spent less than 15 minutes in jail before her bail was paid by the police union. Lorie Smith, a Denver, CO woman, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a Colorado law which she says violates her constitutional rights. Smith, a self-described Christian, owns a graphic arts design company, claims that the law that says she may not refuse people services based on their sexual orientation is unconstitutional. Greetings! It's good to be back after a lengthy hiatus. I've been gone for a while, mourning the loss of a friend, and had been finding it difficult to report about the ugliness in the news. But life goes on. I'm back and will continue to bear witness. Recently, 13 yr old Tyre King was gunned down by police as he ran away. Autopsy confirmed he was shot in the back. Wait 'til you hear how they treated his family who tried to visit him in the hospital on the night he was shot. Unarmed Terence Crutcher, known as Big Crutch, had car trouble. His car stalled in the middle of the road and he was shot to death by police almost immediately. A 19 yr old sex worker is at the center of a huge scandal involving the Oakland-area police. She claims she's had sex with at least 30 law enforcement officials throughout the San Francisco Bay area. Two former officers have already been charged and the investigation continues. In less than two weeks, two trans women have been murdered. T.T. Saffore, who was stabbed to death in Chicago. Crystal Edmonds was slain in Baltimore. Edmonds is the 21st trans woman murdered in 2016. Police in West Hartford, CT seize a protestor's phone and unknowingly record themselves conspiring to fabricate charges against him. Where are the good cops? North Carolina's governor has dropped a lawsuit asking the federal government to validate HB2, the "Bathroom Bill". And the latest news about the toxic water from Flint, Michigan. Airs Tuesday, Sept 20, 6pm Pacific.
