SharQ Talk #30 is live opgenomen in de PXL Music te Hasselt(BE). The Lennert Wolfs leerde ik ruim twee en een half jaar geleden kennen toen ik zelf music management ging studeren aan de PXL in Hasselt. Als twee eerstejaars studenten merkten we beide al snel dat de lesbanken niet altijd voor ons gemaakt zijn. Lennert timmert al heel wat jaren hard aan de weg om uit te groeien tot een van dé DJ's van België (en daarbuiten) maar op een hele eigen manier zonder te streven naar faam en succes. Hij wilt namelijk de DJ's DJ worden, iemand met perfecte skills, een goed netwerk en voor alles; plezier hebben in wat hij doet. Leven alsof het je laatste dag had kunnen zijn, iets wat hem nauwer aan het hart ligt dan wenselijk zelfs. De pas 21-jarige Lennert heeft inmiddels al heel veel toffe dingen mogen doen, zo is hij resident DJ bij Carré in Willebroek, speelde hij op Tomorrowland en in de Tomorrowland Jet, en tourde hij inmiddels internationaal. Ondanks dat ik hem bijna dagelijks sprak op school was er toch nog een hoop te bespreken en gingen we de diepte in over het DJ leven van Lennert. Stepping up to the decks for the 24th Avenue Red Podcast we have Michael Bustard from Belfast in Northern Ireland - a corner of the UK that seems to have a strong presence of crate-digging, underground-as-you-like DJ's that we have become aware of principally through the online Underlying Form cult that was setup by Darren Allen. Michael is a resident DJ at the Underlying Form parties and everytime we heard his mixes coming through on his Soundcloud page (sometimes B2B with fellow UF resident Thomas Faulkner) we became increasingly aware of his skills on the decks and his immacualtely tasteful and varied collection of records. Like many of the DJ's we invite to record a podcast for Avenue Red, Michael's selections seem to ignore stylistic boundaries and thus expose the artistry of a true "DJ's DJ" who shows inventiveness in his flow and also considerable restraint, as he manages to keep the energy levels steadily maintained while delivering a multiplex of sonical elements that are always underpinned by an insatiable groove. This mix is tight, no doubt about it. We were surprised to find that he has only been collecting records and spinning for the last 4 years - it seems he has come a long way in such a short period of time as a DJ. Born Canadian of Italian descent, Paolo Rocco first made his mark as a DJ in the Montreal House/Electronic music scene. Being a general music lover, Paolo became known for his story telling sets and being a "DJ's DJ". Despite this original entry to dance music being as a DJ, Paolo says, “Most people know me for my productions but don't know that I've been spinning records for a lot longer, so it's always nice to showcase myself as a DJ. The Gangstercast mix is a combination of what I'm into now and a couple of gems from the past. It felt good to dust off the old records and give them some spins.” Expanding on these roots as a disk jockey, Paolo Rocco entered the international electronic scene as a producer with his first ever digital single "Move Body, Move Forward" (Klasse Recordings) cracking Beatport's top 25 main chart while holding number 6 in the top 100 Deep House category. Since his debut as a producer follow-up records like "That I Am" (Real Tone Records) and "People Say" (Saved Records) have made a staple showcasing his unique and solitary sound, and earning him fans including Damian Lazarus, Nic Fanciulli, DJ Sneak, John Digweed, Maya Jane Coles, M.A.N.D.Y and Dennis Ferrer. When asked about the House Gangster sound Paolo adds that his view on it is, “Straight up no bull shit House Music. I feel like the Gangstercast gives the guest DJs the opportunity to showcase the evolution from their roots to present day. It's a podcast by DJs for DJs. Having had the pleasure of meeting Sneak and keeping in touch, for me the “House Gangster" brand is an extension of his passion towards the House Music movement. It's amazing to see someone have so much fire left after doing their thing for so many years, it's inspiring, and I think reminds the younger generation that there is no such thing as being comfortable so keep hustling.”  

Definition mit Funk D‘Void – Trippin‘ Techno, kickin‘ House Wer Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier und Sven Väth begeistert, der muss es als Produzent einfach drauf haben. Der heutige Definition-Gast bei Christian Fischer erfüllt all diese Kriterien zu 200 Prozent. Lars Sandberg nennt sich Funk D‘Void nach dem von Parliament Frontmann George Clinton geschaffenen Charakter Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk. Devoid of funk - frei von Funk - ist er aber gerade nicht. Im Gegenteil, er teilt Funk aus als säße er auf seiner Quelle und könne frei darüber verfügen. Er verabreicht ihn unaufgeregt entspannt in Form von Melodien, kickender Deepness, Vocals, House, Techno. Der Schotte, der mittlerweile in Barcelona lebt, bringt damit das mediterrane Lebensgefühl auf die Tanzfläche, druckvoll und treibend zugleich. Positiv ist sein Sound, allerdings niemals oberflächlich. Mit dem Hit „Diabla“ schaffte der seit den 1990ern aktive Künstler 2001 endlich den Durchbruch. Ab da gab es keinen Weg zurück, nur noch nach vorn und durch die Clubs der Welt treibt es Funk D‘Void nun. Gut, dass auf dieser Strecke auch die Distillery liegt. Funk D'Void is a DJ and producer who has been at the forefront of the global electronic music scene since the mid-90s. He started Djing at around the tender age of 15, running two under-18 clubs himself – a perfect start to his career. Knowing his vocation to music from an early age after being brought up by his professional pianist mother, Lars never had any doubt as to where his future would lie. House music changed his life, the early Chicago sound specifically, and hearing the certain sounds during his childhood stirred something inside him; the 808 drum machine used on Marvin Gaye's “Sexual Healing” secured his fascination with these electronic sounds – the turning point over to the Detroit techno sound was almost a spiritual moment as it forged his unique sound that would follow over the coming years – visceral, soulful and without compromise. After a string of hits over the years (“Jack Me Off”, “Bad Coffee” “Emotional Content”) plus some killer remixes for the likes of Underworld, New Order and Kevin Saunderson, he is probably best known for the end-of-nighter 'Diabla' which bridged house and techno (and was flogged by everyone from Danny Howells to Sven Vath). And if you look carefully, recently you’ll also spy the name ‘L. Sandberg’ in the liner notes of releases by "newcomer" Francois Dubois, whose “Blood” and “I Try” were huge underground hits of 2006 and 2007 respectively. Much in demand DJ and critically acclaimed producer, his Djing style is everything you expect a true music lover’s taste to be: he is comfortable and adept at moving any dancefloor, the proof being that he is one of the busiest Djs on the circuit today, and has been for the last decade.
