Do you ever wonder what the caddies get up to when the cameras stop rolling and the PGA Tour players head to the clubhouse? In this live episode from the RBC Canadian Open, host Colin Weston steps inside the Caddie Lounge (powered by [Levelwear](www.levelwear.com)) to uncover the gritty reality of life on the bag with 28-year tour veteran Don “Double D” Donatello. From carrying 42-pound golf bags up the equivalent of 60 flights of stairs a round to a dramatic "I quit" moment on the 4th hole, Don shares the wild, unfiltered stories of 650+ tournaments and why this lounge is a game-changer for professional caddies. Key takeaways in this episode with Don that you will discover: The Harsh Math of Caddie Economics: Don breaks down the financial gamble of being a looper - the low base salary, paying your own travel expenses, and how missing the cut means earning $0 for a week's work. The Physical Toll of Looping: It's not just walking. Don reveals the insane fitness stats: 18,000+ steps and 30-60 flights of stairs per day, all while balancing a 42-pound bag on uneven terrain. How the Caddie Lounge Was Born: Learn how a simple conversation over a Levelwear hat turned into a tour-wide movement, giving caddies their own space with massage therapists, video games, and the dignity they've deserved for years. The Caddie Lounge at The RBC Canadian Open is Levelwear's way of supporting their "Who's With You?" campaign to provide PGA Tour caddies with a space to unwind, rejuvenate and hang out with their fellow loopers. The Caddie Lounge is now at over 10 PGA Tour stops annually. Three Inspiring Quotes from Don Donatello On the old days vs. now: "28 years ago, I only got paid $400 a week. You drove in a car and slept three to a room. One guy would sleep on the floor and you had to stand outside in the rain. Now, thanks to Levelwear, we feel like we're being treated like the players." On the secret to a long career: "Certainty out here is very important as a caddie. A lot of mistakes these PGA Tour players make aren't because they not good - it's because they're uncertain. Knowing when to speak and when not to is a very fragile thing." On saving Webb Simpson's career: "He had four holes to play to keep his card. I changed his read on two putts. He made both. He shot 63 to keep his card. He said, 'Those were some of the greatest reads ever!'" I sit down with Leif Tilden, the man behind Donatello in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. From the legendary Jim Henson Creature Shop to the prehistoric set of Dinosaurs, Leif shares incredible stories from a career spent bringing beloved characters to life through physical performance and puppetry. In this episode, Leif discusses his roots in experimental theater at NYU and how that unique training prepared him for the intense demands of suit performance. You will hear firsthand accounts of what it was really like working with director Steve Barron, navigating the complex animatronics of the turtle suits, and the genuine brotherhood formed between the four actors under the shells. Leif takes me behind the scenes of the hit show Dinosaurs where he played Robbie Sinclair and operated the arms for the formidable BP Richfield. He also opens up about the evolution of his career into directing and location managing, offering a rare look at the logistics of filming in Los Angeles. Plus, some wild stories from his time as a gorilla performer. Whether you are a TMNT super-fan or a lover of practical effects and puppetry, this conversation is packed with nostalgia and industry insights. Monteacuto, piccolo paese in Umbria. More than a Few Words

Reaching 1,200 episodes feels like the perfect excuse to look back at where it all began. Over the years, there have been conversations that made me laugh, made me think, and a few that deserved far more attention than they received the first time around. So this week, I'm opening the vault. Each day, I'll be re-releasing one favorite episode from the archives. Some are memorable classics, others are hidden gems, but every one of them still has something worth sharing today. First up: if the words Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instantly got your attention, you're going to enjoy this one. Originally released as Episode 19 in early 2010, this conversation with Jay Mattingly takes a fun and unexpected look at DISC profiles through the personalities of everyone's favorite crime-fighting turtles. It's lighthearted, clever, and packed with insights you can still use today. Some business lessons come from spreadsheets. Others come from pizza-loving, crime-fighting turtles. I sat down with Jay Mattingly, our director of marketing, and somehow we ended up deep in the world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And honestly, it made more sense than you'd think. We were talking about DiSC profiles and Jay had one of those “wait a minute” moments. The turtles are basically a perfect personality map. If you remember them, you probably already know where this is going.Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello weren't just different. They were different on purpose. And that's where this gets interesting for business owners. Every team needs a Raphael The fast decision-maker. He jumps in, takes action, and yes, sometimes ruffles feathers. That's your D personality. You may not always love the delivery, but you'll love the momentum. Don't underestimate your Michelangelo He's the fun one, the energy, the morale booster. High I personalities keep the team connected and engaged. Without them, work gets done, but it's a grind. Your Donatello keeps you out of trouble Detail-focused, thoughtful, and maybe a little cautious. That C personality is the reason your big ideas don't fall apart under pressure. Leadership doesn't always look loud Leonardo leads, but not by overpowering the room. He's steady, supportive, and steps up when needed. That S personality often becomes the glue that holds everything together. Who are the Turtles on Your Team? The turtles worked because they were different, not in spite of it. They respected each other when it mattered, even if they drove each other a little crazy along the way. Sound familiar? If your team feels a bit like herding turtles some days, you're probably doing it right. The goal isn't to make everyone think the same. It's to understand how they think so you can work better together. Because in business, just like in cartoons, the magic isn't in one personality. It's in the mix.

I am back from my trip to Florence, and am covered in history. It is impossible to go to Florence and not be. Unless you are a college student who is doing study abroad and only know about Rafael, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon and movie. It was kind of crazy to be able to walk around and casually see works of art from the 1300s. It is easy to say things like “Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance,” but when you see it in person, it makes quite the impression. Staring at a Giotti or a Botticelli or a Caravaggio leaves a mark. Being able to walk streets or sit in piazzas, thinking about the centuries of footsteps that preceded puts one life in a certain perspective. Speaking of perspective, I don't know if anything quite prepares you for standing in front of David looming over the crowds. Perfectly proportionate but on a whole other scale.  It wasn't just the past that was impressive, but the present as well. The artists who were working on the streets, showing their beautiful works in front of other beautiful works while people walked by in beautiful fashion. Beauty upon beauty upon beauty. While there, I even had the chance to take in a Mark Rothko exhibit, who interestingly enough was influenced by Renaissance art and visited Florence many times.  So much art, so many museums, so many ways to tell the story of this history.  This is why it is good timing to have Will Humphrey of the agency Sugar Creative on Experience by Design. Will started out as a fine artist, having his work exhibited as any artist would. His education combines degrees in Graphic Design and Communication as well as Molecular Genetics. Today he is the Director of Creative and Innovation at Sugar. At Sugar, he is part of a creative force that combines augmented reality, virtual reality, storytelling, and history together to bring the past into the present.  We talk about Sugar's project on the American Revolution that will allow users to experience pivotal historical moments through interactive experiences. Will shared the inspiration he received from his grandfather, who developed anti-aircraft balloons during the Battle of Britain. We share our appreciation of video games, especially those with historical features and lessons, such as Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Will talks about how they are working with Ubisoft to combine gaming and history to make for immersive learning experiences.  Will shares insights from his work on geolocated experiences, highlighting the value of immersing oneself in a set of ideas and understanding the physical and historical context of a place. We also discussed how physical transformations, such as landfill in Boston, affect our understanding of history and the importance of considering the nature of a space in designing experiences.   We cover a lot of ground in this chat, which is about as much ground as I covered walking around Florence and its many museums. Character Design Issues: Turtles' designs were criticized as grotesque, reducing relatability and making action scenes less believable. Storytelling Problems: Over-explained plots, especially regarding April O'Neil and Eric Sacks, bogged down the movie's pacing and clarity. Setting Conflicts: The film's setting away from New York City limited key identity elements and iconic landmarks associated with the turtles. Mixed Reception of Cast: Alan Ritchson as Raphael received praise, while others like Johnny Knoxville and Megan Fox faced criticism for their roles. Cultural Context Matters: The film reflected a 2014 era not fully embracing nerd culture, impacting its creative choices and audience reception.   Notes Production and Narrative Challenges This 2014 Ninja Turtles movie struggled with a lack of creative love and identity, making it feel like a disjointed and ashamed adaptation of the franchise (00:00). Identity Crisis and Shame Factor heavily influenced the movie's tone and plot, with the film almost dropping the "Teenage Mutant" part and considering alien origins for the turtles (11:31). The film's producers inserted convoluted backstory elements mid-production to "course correct" a script that initially strayed far from the core Ninja Turtles mythos. This led to an over-explained, bogged-down narrative that felt like a "walk of shame" rather than an embrace of the IP's strengths. The era's mainstream culture had not fully embraced nerd properties, causing awkward attempts at modernization and distancing. Plot Bloat and Over-Explanation detracted from the movie's pacing and engagement, especially with April O'Neil's bloated and often unconvincing reporter storyline (20:53). Scenes focus too long on generic Michael Bay-style action and April's personal struggles rather than on the turtles themselves. The turtles are introduced late and spend much of the runtime as shadowy figures rather than engaging characters. Convoluted Villain Backstory with Eric Sacks as an unnecessary intermediary between Shredder and the turtles, adding complexity that did not improve the story (01:10:14). Removing or significantly trimming Sacks' role was proposed as a way to streamline the narrative. Mismatch in Tone and Style was evident, with the movie trying to be serious and gritty while relying on CGI-heavy, unrealistic action sequences that lacked tangible physicality (35:42). The film's heavy use of CGI and complex mech suit for Shredder overshadowed traditional martial arts choreography that defines the franchise. Character and Design Issues The film's character portrayals and designs undermined the essence of the Ninja Turtles, alienating fans and harming engagement (28:35). Turtle Designs Were Widely Disliked for being oversized, grotesque, and overly detailed with "human teeth" that made them less relatable and more monstrous (29:50). Their giant size and bulletproof nature reduced the importance of their ninja skills and made fight scenes less believable. Complex textures and too many visual details caused action scenes to become "CGI mush," making it hard to focus on key movements. Character Imbalance and Focus on Raphael turned the movie into essentially a Raphael-centric story, sidelining the other turtles and undermining the team dynamic (56:20). Alan Ritchson's portrayal of Raphael was praised as the best casting and performance in the film. Other turtles like Leonardo and Donatello were underused; Michelangelo was poorly written as an overly sexualized and annoying character. April O'Neil's Role and Writing were criticized for being unconvincing and bloated, with her professional competence and motivations feeling unrealistic and distracting (26:00). The forced "chosen one" connection between April and the turtles was seen as unnecessary and cheapened her acceptance of them. Supporting Characters like Will Arnett's cameraman were noted as relatively decent additions, providing human perspective and some humor without overwhelming the story (48:42). Setting and Visual Context The movie's setting choices and visual style weakened the core appeal of the franchise, distancing it from the turtles' iconic New York City roots (43:58). Misplaced Setting Outside New York City for large portions of the movie conflicted with the turtles' identity as New York City teens and vigilantes (44:50). Much of the film occurs in an ambiguous upstate New York mansion and mountain, disconnected from the urban environment central to the turtles' story. This choice limited opportunities to showcase iconic city landmarks and the turtles' connection to their home turf. Visual Style Reflects 2010s Orange-Teal Trend, which while vibrant, was harsh and contributed to a stylized look that did not fit the tone of the movie (16:45). Snowboarding and Chase Sequences were seen as fun and reminiscent of video game-inspired action but felt out of place and disconnected from the turtles' core habitat (48:42). These sequences resembled arcade game levels rather than integrated story moments. Proposed Fixes and Editorial Improvements A major consensus was that the movie could be improved significantly by cutting down excess plot and focusing much earlier and more on the turtles themselves (01:09:02). Streamline April's Story and Cut Eric Sacks to reduce narrative bloat and confusing backstory (01:10:14). Compress April's investigation into one clear sequence, eliminating multiple instances of Foot Clan encounters and confusing plot threads. Remove or minimize Sacks to focus villainy on Shredder and the Foot Clan. Introduce the Turtles Sooner and Add More Teenage Interactions to showcase their personalities and team dynamics earlier in the movie (01:10:14). Incorporate scenes like the elevator banter to emphasize their teenage traits and humor. Sprinkle in more Foot Clan fights to build suspense and showcase ninja action throughout. Focus on Making the Final Third Action-Packed but Clear, allowing the action sequences to flow without unnecessary interruptions (01:10:14). Keep the fight choreography that works, such as the Shredder vs. Splinter sequence, while trimming excess. Possible Reshoots or Edits to downplay or rework problematic story elements like April's "chosen one" status and the lab origin flashbacks (01:19:47). Use existing footage more efficiently to maintain story coherence while trimming excess. Emphasize Fun and Character Chemistry earlier to avoid the film feeling "all tension" and "boring" (01:15:07). Add small moments of levity, camaraderie, and ninja antics before the big action scenes. Maintain Realistic Expectations about how much could be changed given the film's production timeline and 2014-era constraints (01:25:21). Cast and Performances Certain casting choices were praised while others detracted from the film's overall impact on character believability (03:51). Alan Ritchson as Raphael was widely considered the best fit and performance, capturing Raphael's classic loner and heartfelt traits well (51:05). His emotional speech and portrayal of Raphael's arc were highlights. Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo was underused and miscast, with his limited screen time failing to do justice to the character (53:34). Megan Fox's April O'Neil was critiqued for lacking investment and acting strength, which weakened the emotional core of her storyline (24:35). Will Arnett's Cameraman Character was a positive surprise, providing light humor and a grounded human viewpoint without dominating the narrative (48:42). Whoopi Goldberg's Role was underutilized and seen as wasted potential given her talent (28:35). Franchise and Cultural Context The film reflects the cultural and franchise environment of the early 2010s, impacting its creative choices and reception (14:07). 2014 Era Nerd Culture Not Fully Embraced, leading to awkward attempts at modernization and distancing from the core turtle identity (14:07). The movie's shame about being a Ninja Turtles film echoes similar issues seen in early Transformers films. Comparisons with Other Ninja Turtles Iterations show this movie as weaker, especially compared to its sequel and animated projects like Mutant Mayhem that clearly love the source material (02:41). The sequel "Turtles Out of the Shadows" was noted as far more fun and faithful. Discussion of the Franchise's Multi-Generational Appeal highlighted the turtles' ability to adapt but also underscored the risk of losing core essence through unnecessary changes (06:18). Audience Distrust and Over-Explanation reflects a production that did not trust viewers to accept the turtles as they are, leading to excessive exposition and forced justifications (18:04). Product Placement and Minor Details like Windows Phones on characters' devices were noted as subtle but fun touches (01:02:00). This month, We kick off the next chapter of our Mirage-era journey as we begin Volume 4 of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, covering the first four issues in our ongoing monthly deep dive. Written and illustrated by Peter Laird with finishes by Jim Lawson (and additional work by Eric Talbot later in the arc), this era marks a return to Mirage continuity following the Volume 2 fork in the road — and right from the opening cover by Michael Dooney, the Turtles feel grounded, compact, and classic again. We also set the stage in the early 2000s, when these issues first appeared between September 2001 and mid-2002. Pop culture was stacked: films like Spider-Man, Star Wars: Episode II, Blade II, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding filled theaters, Nickelback and Ashanti ruled the charts, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City dominated gaming, and Family Guy was canceled (for now). Against that backdrop, Volume 4 begins a slower-burn, sci-fi-tinged saga that blends grounded family moments with looming cosmic stakes.Issue #1 mirrors the Turtles' very first alley fight as they clash with the Madhattan Maulitia, while revealing a major shift: the brothers are now in their 30s, feeling every mile of the fight. A rooftop snowmobile chase leaves Michelangelo critically injured and discovered by the imposing alien warrior Magnrok, while Donatello uncovers an abandoned armored truck that feels destined to matter later. Meanwhile, April and Casey attend a fertility appointment, Shadow senses something world-changing on the horizon, and the Fugitoid and Utroms quietly prepare a massive interstellar operation.Issue #2 finds Michelangelo surviving an airborne ambulance mishap and waking inside Kurtzburg Memorial Hospital — a facility that treats superheroes, aliens, and the otherwise unusual. Back in the lair, Donatello and Casey investigate the mysterious armored truck while Raphael contemplates being left alone with skeletonized robbers and his life choices. Shadow navigates teenage secrecy, and the Utrom plan continues to unfold beyond Earth.Issue #3 expands the scope dramatically: a research expedition in Venezuela encounters a wooden, weaponized creature, U.S. Air Defense scrambles as an Utrom craft departs the moon, and Michelangelo receives a scenic flight home courtesy of his rescuer Raptarr. As aliens descend toward New York Harbor, panic spreads, missiles fail spectacularly, and humanity greets first contact with static, confusion, and ineffective gunfire.Issue #4 delivers the payoff: the alien craft peacefully returns the long-lost spacecraft Defiant to Earth and introduces the Utroms to the world — with one clumsy stumble instantly easing global tension. Karai observes events from the shadows, revealing Foot Clan interest in the alien arrival, while a quiet rooftop moment gives way to yet another escalation: a giant robot rising from the sewers.Volume 4 opens with introspection, humor, and domestic calm colliding with cosmic inevitability. The Turtles are older, the world is bigger, and something enormous is clearly on its way.
