This week on Loves Labours Watched we connect with acclaimed author Curtis Sittenfeld. You may have read Curtis' bestselling 2008 novel American Wife, which imagines the life of a fictionalised American First Lady who shares many biographical similarities with Laura Bush. Or perhaps you devoured her wry collection of short stories, You Think it, I'll Say it, published in 2018 and set to be adapted into a Reese-Witherspoon-produced TV series. Now, Curtis' back with an explosive new novel, Rodham, a fictionalised account of what might have happened had Hillary Clinton decided not to marry Bill. We discuss Curtis' motivations for writing the novel, what it was like marrying real life with fiction and what she thinks Hillary herself might think of the book. It was a fascinating chat and we then dive into our thoughts on the book (the chat and discussion is largely spoiler-free!) Later, more book chat as Francesca discusses writer Emma Gannon's debut novel Olive, and Helena is gearing up to read new novel Tsarina by J. Nelle Patrick. Enjoy!

It's a long one so you may need to listen to it in installments!   You'll also hear:   >> Why he’s moving the farm away from deep tillage towards minimal tillage   >> How choice and convenience are the most important factors for satisfied CSA customers   >> How to tackle to fear of the empty box by using CSA management and planning   >> How defining roles between staff makes delegation clear >> Takeaways from the Frozen Ground winter growing conference >> An overview of Curtis' earth-bermed greenhouse inspired by ones used in China >> How his advice for new farmers is to learn is a less costly way by apprenticing Quotes from the episode:   "Fluffing does not solve soil problems" “Start with the end in mind” when planning your CSA   About the Guest   Curtis and Sarah Millsap, along with their ten children, farm manager, apprentice, and occasional volunteers, have been operating Millsap Farms, a 20-acre farm in Springfield MO, for the past 12 years. They grow 2 acres of vegetables and flowers, with 20,000 s.f. (almost ½ acre) under greenhouses, high tunnels, and caterpillar tunnels. They use organic practices and sell through a year-round 170 member CSA, farmers' market, and restaurants. They sow, transplant, harvest, and sell, 50 weeks out of the year. The Millsaps also host a weekly pizza night from May to October, where they have 250 people out to the farm for wood-fired pizza and live music. They are always looking for ways to do more with less, including energy and water conservation measures such as no-till, solar greenhouses, stored heat, etc. They love to teach people who are looking to enter the field of farming, having hosted, as of the end of the 2018 season, over 25 interns, most of whom are still involved in farming full time, 4 of whom now have their own farms. Additionally, they host hundreds of people on tours each year, from large extension organized field days, to farm families from near and far who drop in for an impromptu tour of their farm. Curtis speaks to various groups about how to design farms for a balanced life, including using the right tools, infrastructure, labor and marketing mix to fit each farm. The Millsaps and their farm crew consider themselves stewards of creation, and take that responsibility seriously. They also love to travel and camp, and spend an average of 5 weeks a year away from the farm, often taking their farm crew with them to enjoy the hills and creeks of the Ozarks.

Topics include: Curtis Loves Joanie (pre teen Curtis had a "thing" for Erin Moran), Water Polo (what the fuck are the rules and why do we care) and Joe hates Quentin Tarantino (just a tad too racist for Joe's liking). Also, we weigh in on the upcoming NFL season (at least the Browns and Steelers, which in hindsight between recording this episode and writing this summary, doesn't look good for either team or their fans... if that makes any sense). All that and so much more on this weeks episode of theDAMNcast!

If you're rooting for Elly Belly to get more screen time and a decent plot line, but would never admit it, then this is your tribe, Welcome! As the final flames in the fire pit are dwindling and the final is looming, Harriet is back discussing all of the bits that have been going on in the villa this week! She is joined by Journalist Anna Codrea-Rado, they are getting right into all of this week's factor 50, like: Micheal's oh-so questionable behaviour with Amber, how he has been dealing with his feelings and “pride”, something he keeps talking about, they question how this will affect him when he returns home as “the country’s most hated man”. The ladies admire Belle for being a strong woman and showing what she's made of this week, although they ask: was she in the right in her argument with Anton or was it just harmless banter? As we continue to be confused by Maura and Curtis’ (Maurtis?) late blooming love affair, once again Harriet is dissecting Curtis' real reason for being in the Villa?!And as Molly and Tommy become “official” and have started dropping the “L-bomb” Harriet and Anna ask: are they actually the real deal? Or should we be worrying for the future of Tommy, Molly and Elly Belly?Anna Codrea-Rado is freelance journalist and often writes for The New York Times, Wired and The Guardian and is the founder of FJ&Co a platform designed to help freelancers create the career they're dreaming of!Harriet Minter is a journalist, broadcaster and speaker. Hello and welcome to Season 6, Episode 12, of theDAMNcast. This weeks topics include: Deepfakes ("an AI-based technology used to produce or alter video content so that it presents something that didn't, in fact, occur." Not exactly how Curtis' dumb ass describes it on the show, but you'll get the idea), Movies that are so bad they are good (The Room and Troll 2 are Curtis' examples, but Marty and Joe have never seen either, of course) and Extreme Saunaing (People see how long they can endure up to 229 degree Fahrenheit temperatures in order to "win", and yes people have died). Oh... and Marty and Curtis get into an argument about music where Marty calls Curtis Sarah Palin, and Curtis yells at Marty about how he can see Alaska from his apartment (Curtis just basically yells for a good five minutes during the conversation... about something definitely not worth yelling over, which is why his nickname is Testo) All that and so much more on this weeks episode of theDAMNcast!

Hello and welcome to another rousing episode of the show. We start this weeks show off in tribute to Curtis' mother Linda K. Swinford, whom unfortunately lost her life on April 30th, RIP Mom. After that we reminisce about the 70's and 80's which somehow leads us into talking about Prohibition, and we just keep A rolling on, topics include: Jungle Cats (mountain lions and tigers to be specific), The Brothers Grimm (Curtis (sorta) reads the synopsis of A lesser known tale "The Goose Girl") and we talk about the Vajankle (A foot shaped pussy, need I say more?). Oh and Joe finally show's Marty and Curtis what he looked like with hair (Spoiler Alert: he looked SEXY AF, obviously, but he always does).
