What's up, dudes? Remember the Brit-pop group XTC? Well, in 1983 they released a Christmas single under the pseudonym The Three Wise Men in order to test out a new producer, David Lord. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas joins me to talk all about “Thanks for Christmas” and its B-side “Countdown to Christmas Party Time!”The single had a few in jokes in the liner notes too! The writing is credited to Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, the traditional Western names for the Magi. Credit was given to producer The Good Lord as well.Pseudonyms? Check. Modulations? A bunch. Adding a B-side just so the album doesn't warp? Definitely! So head to your local record store, pop on some headphones, and listen to this episode all about XTC “Thanks for Christmas!”Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicCheck us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! In this 4-hour special, we focus on musicians who have used new modular & vintage synths in their studios, with tracks taken from the 80s to the present day, which have been featured on various editions of our previous podcasts. Modular synths, once considered virtually obsolete, have been one of the most surprising growth areas in music technology over the last decade. The main appeal to musicians is obvious: their unrivalled flexibility makes them the most versatile form of an imaginable synthesiser. Customisation is one of the main appeals of modular synthesisers, with small-format and relatively cheap Eurorack is one exciting way that sound connoisseurs are building upon the classic sound technologies of the past while taking advantage of new alternative modules that are jam-packed with never-seen-before features. Abstract: The early school years shape a young brain's capability to comprehend and contextualize words within milliseconds of exposure. Parsing word sounds (phonological interpretation) and word recognition (enabling semantic interpretation) are integral to this process. Yet little is known about the causal mechanisms of cortical activity during these early developmental stages. In this study, we aimed to explore these causal mechanisms via dynamic causal modelling of event-related potentials (ERPs) acquired from 30 typically developing children (ages 6 to 8 years) as they completed a spoken word-picture matching task. Source reconstruction of high-density electroencephalography (128 channels) was used to ascertain differences in whole-brain cortical activity during semantically "congruent" and "incongruent" conditions. Source activations analyzed during the N400 ERP window identified significant regions-of-interest (pFWE less than .05) localized primarily in the right hemisphere when contrasting congruent and incongruent word-picture stimuli. Dynamic causal models (DCMs) were tested on source activations in the fusiform gyrus (rFusi), inferior parietal lobule (rIPL), inferior temporal gyrus (rITG) and superior frontal gyrus (rSFG). DCM results indicated that a fully connected bidirectional model with self-(inhibiting) connections over rFusi, rIPL and rSFG provided the highest model evidence, based on exceedance probabilities derived from Bayesian statistical inferences. Connectivity parameters of rITG and rSFG regions from the winning DCM were negatively correlated with behavioural measures of receptive vocabulary and phonological memory (pFDR less than .05), such that lower scores on these assessments corresponded with increased connectivity between temporal pole and anterior frontal regions. The findings suggest that children with lower language processing skills required increased recruitment of right hemisphere frontal/temporal areas during task performance. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.28.518242v1?rss=1 Authors: Tosato, T., Rohenkohl, G., Fries, P. Abstract: Several studies have probed perceptual performance at different times after a self-paced motor action and found frequency-specific modulations of perceptual performance phase-locked to the action. Such action-related modulation has been reported for various frequencies and modulation strengths. In an attempt to establish a basic effect at the population level, we had a relatively large number of participants (n=50) perform a self-paced button press followed by a detection task at threshold, and we applied both fixed- and random-effects tests. The combined data of all trials and participants surprisingly did not show any significant action-related modulation. However, based on previous studies, we explored the possibility that such modulation depends on the participant's internal state. Indeed, when we split trials based on performance in neighboring trials, then trials in periods of low performance showed an action-related modulation at approximately 17 Hz. When we split trials based on the performance in the preceding trial, we found that trials following a ''miss'' showed an action-related modulation at approximately 17 Hz. Finally, when we split participants based on their false-alarm rate, we found that participants with no false alarms showed an action-related modulation at approximately 17 Hz. All these effects were significant in random-effects tests, supporting an inference on the population. Together, these findings indicate that action-related modulations are not always detectable. However, the results suggest that specific internal states such as lower attentional engagement and/or higher decision criterion are characterized by a modulation in the beta-frequency range. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.10.511419v1?rss=1 Authors: White, A. L., Kay, K., Tang, K. A., Yeatman, J. D. Abstract: The ability to read depends on a region in ventral occipito-temporal cortex known as the "visual word form area" (VWFA). The VWFA, which has several sub-regions, lies amidst a collection of areas involved in visual recognition. Although it responds best to written words, its selectivity is not absolute, and it exhibits top-down modulations that are not well understood. Here, we used fMRI to investigate the interaction of bottom-up visual factors and top-down cognitive factors in the VWFA and neighboring regions. We presented participants with strings of letters and non-letter shapes at a range of visual field locations. For each stimulus type, participants performed a task in which the stimuli were task-relevant (lexical decision and gap localization, respectively), and a task in which the stimuli were irrelevant (detecting fixation dot color changes). Standard models of attention predict that all stimuli would evoke larger responses when task-relevant than irrelevant, throughout visual cortex. To the contrary, the data showed surprising patterns specific to the VWFA. Letter strings did evoke much larger responses when they were task-relevant than irrelevant, even when presented too far in the periphery to be recognized. In contrast, non-letter shapes evoked smaller responses when they were task-relevant. Connectivity analyses suggest that these task effects are due to flexible communication between the VWFA and Broca's area. We conclude that top-down modulations in visual cortex do not merely enhance representations of attended stimuli, but can boost processing in specific brain regions, contingent on engagement in specific tasks. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.04.510615v1?rss=1 Authors: Lindhardt, T. B., Ostergaard, L., Liang, Z., Hansen, B. Abstract: Brain clearance has been found to be greatly enhanced during sleep and anesthesia. Studies using optical microscopy have attributed this to an anesthesia-related expansion of the brain's extra-cellular space. These results, however, have been based on invasive experiments with a limited field of view. Here, we employ diffusion kurtosis magnetic resonance imaging to assess brain microstructure in the awake and anesthetized mouse brain. We find both mean diffusivity and mean kurtosis to be significantly decreased in the anesthetized mouse brain compared to the awake state. This effect is observed in both gray matter and white matter. Our findings are consistent with the reports of brain ECS volume increase in sleep and anesthesia. Based on simple simulations, we discuss how an ECS volume increase (cell shrinkage) during sleep and anesthesia can coexist with other aspects of brain physiology. Our study demonstrates that diffusion kurtosis MRI can be used in the study of the glymphatic system. Importantly, our study shows an overlooked effect of anesthesia on brain microstructure which is relevant to preclinical MRI as a whole. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: The P3m is a late component of the event-related field (ERF) and is assumed to reflect the allocation of resources in various cognitive domains. The amplitude of the P3m can be affected by several task parameters, like stimulus probability, inter-stimulus interval and task difficulty. The task difficulty can alter the P3m amplitude, depending on which mechanisms are involved. The sources of the P3m are located in several brain areas, suggesting a widespread network generating the P3m. Which of these sources of the P3m give rise to the task-difficulty induced amplitude modulation are not well investigated. However, localizing these sources could pave the way for intervention studies with non-invasive brain stimulation methods, which might be suitable to modulate the pathologically altered P3m emerging in various psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. We designed a MEG-study with a visual oddball-like task with two different task difficulties to 1) show decreased P3m amplitudes induced by increased task difficulty and 2) estimate the sources of this P3m modulation. Additionally, the influence of the increased task difficulty on behavioral outcomes were analyzed. The P3m amplitude decreased significantly in the hard condition compared to easy condition. Furthermore, the hit rate for standard trials decreased significantly, while the reaction times increased for both, targets and standards. For this specific visual oddball-like task, the sources of the task difficulty dependent P3m amplitude modulation are located in the centro-parietal regions. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.09.507362v1?rss=1 Authors: Candia-Rivera, D., Norouzi, K., Ramsoy, T. Z., Valenza, G. Abstract: Previous endeavors have revealed how the dynamical information exchange between central and autonomous nervous systems, as measured from brain-heart interplay, can explain emotional arousal and physical stress. In this study, we test our recently proposed computational framework for a functional brain-heart interplay assessment; the Sympatho-Vagal Synthetic Data Generation Model. The model estimates the causal and bidirectional neural modulations between EEG oscillations and sympathetic/parasympathetic activity. Here, mental stress is elicited by increasing the cognitive demand and quantified on 37 human volunteers. The increase on mental stress induced an increased variability on heart-to-brain functional interplay, primarily from sympathetic activity on EEG oscillations in the delta and beta bands. Existing theoretical and experimental evidence has shown that stress involves top-down neural dynamics in the brain. Therefore, our results show that mental stress involves dynamic and bidirectional neural interactions at a brain-body level as well, where bodily feedback shapes the perceived stress caused by an increased cognitive demand. We conclude that brain-heart interplay estimators are suitable biomarkers for stress measurements. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by PaperPlayer

Devotion to Truth ♾️ An exploration of simple concepts yielding profound insight. Kindle ► http://bit.ly/RiffsKindle Ch 1 Unity & Diversity Take a brief look at our genetic code. Here you'll find a 99.9% similarity between humans and a 0.1% difference. Very simply put: Sameness & Uniqueness. Take a look at the eye. The pupil is our shared being. The iris is our artistic expression. Every truth has been partial. We now integrate all variables, all narratives. The collective and the individual. The left and the right. The east and the west. The indigenous and the modern. There has yet to be a story, a map, that contains it all. Ch 2 What is Time? Look at a clock. Look before your conditioning. See the squiggly lines as symbols. Before these symbols, what was 'time'? Strip the conditioning away. What are you left with? Eternity. What was meant to be a simple coordination mechanism became a cultural hypnosis into finity. Ch 3 Symphonies don't play one song Uni-verse means one-song. Multi-verse means many-songs. How many musical combinations can you imagine? If your answer is endless, then you understand. Our cosmology is that simple. So busy investigating quarks we're forgetting to dance. Ch 4 Quantum Mechanics Matter is what appears. What is underlying is energy. Modulations/fluctuations of energy. How many combinations of energy can you imagine? If your answer is endless, then you understand. Our cosmology is that simple. Ch 5 Infants Before the name, what is a child? Before telling a child who they are, who are they? What is that which is before all layers of identity? This is the realization of infinity. The ineffable absolute lies before all conditioning. Strip away the symbols from a clock. Strip away the name from a child. Strip away the matter from energy. All that is left is the infinite. Eternally modulating. Ch 6 What is Love? Love is the recognition that we share this eternal modulation. Love is ultimate unity in temporary diversity. Love is the sun, radiating unconditional warmth. Through endless combinations of clouds, the sun shines. What is observing through you is what is observing through me. Love recognizes this shared awareness and cannot inflict harm. This seer is the ultimate, and even it is dreamed. Ch 7 Dreams A dream is an exploration, a play. A simulated modulation. Immersion into first-person view. Requiring an observer just like reality does. A dream is like a uni-verse. One song ends and the next begins. The modulation changes, but the observer remains the same. Dreams are many-songs, just like realities are. The music is modulating all around you, can you hear? Ch 8 Music Silence between notes is like empty space. Frequently unnoticed yet provides void. Quieting mind gains access to void which yields clarity. The notes are great, but so is the silence. Refrain from speaking & technology for one day to feel it yourself. The climax is not the last note. Just like the journey is not the destination. Ch 9 Surfing Fireworks Every appearance is a celebration, a firework. Do you wish to fight the wave or surf on the crest? Are you counting sprinkles on your neighbor's ice cream cone? Taste the rainbow. Eternal combinations of fireworks. Unending, blissful, peaceful, wondrous. Missing this is missing the expression of life itself. Ch 10 One Two Many All is One. All is also Two. All is also Many. There is no separation. We're already it.

Abstract: Humans are constantly exposed to a rich tapestry of visual information in a potentially changing environment. To cope with the computational burden this engenders, our perceptual system must use prior context to simultaneously prioritise stimuli of importance and suppress irrelevant surroundings. This study investigated the influence of prediction and attention in visual perception by investigating event-related potentials (ERPs) often associated with these processes, N170 and N2pc for prediction and attention respectively. A contextual trajectory paradigm was used which violated visual predictions and neglected to predetermine areas of spatial interest, to account for the potentially unpredictable nature of a real-life visual scene. Participants (N=36) viewed a visual display of cued and non-cued shapes rotating in a five-step predictable trajectory, with the fifth and final position of either the cued or non-cued shape occurring in a predictable or unpredictable spatial location. Results showed both enhanced N170 and N2pc amplitudes to unpredictable compared to predictable stimuli, and furthermore the N170 was larger to cued than non-cued stimuli. In accordance with previous research these results suggest the N170 is in part a visual prediction error response with respect to higher-level visual processes, and furthermore the N2pc may index attention reorientation. The results demonstrate prior context influences the sensitivity of the N170 and N2pc electrophysiological responses. The findings suggest attention boosts the precision of prediction error signals, furthering our understanding of how expectation can modulate prediction in selective visuospatial attention. Implications of this research provide insight into how prior context in visuospatial motion guides attention in a visual scene. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.30.321729v1?rss=1 Authors: Adam, K. C. S., Serences, J. T. Abstract: To find important objects, we must focus on our goals, ignore distractions, and take our changing environment into account. This is formalized in models of visual search whereby goal-driven, stimulus-driven and history-driven factors are integrated into a priority map that guides attention. History is invoked to explain behavioral effects that are neither wholly goal-driven nor stimulus-driven, but whether history likewise alters goal-driven and/or stimulus-driven signatures of neural priority is unknown. We measured fMRI responses in human visual cortex during a visual search task where trial history was manipulated (colors switched unpredictably or repeated). History had a near-constant impact on responses to singleton distractors, but not targets, from V1 through parietal cortex. In contrast, history-independent target enhancement was absent in V1 but increased across regions. Our data suggest that history does not alter goal-driven search templates, but rather modulates canonically stimulus-driven sensory responses to create a temporally-integrated representation of priority. #3. In this episode, you'll discover how jazz song harmony works. Today we look at song key signatures (flat keys and sharp keys), I'll show you how to quickly identify a song's 'home key'.
