21st century electro-futurism, Helsinki style. Sometime around a decade ago, electro started to surge onto dance floors again. A new generation of DJs, from Helena Hauff and DJ Stingray, brought the sci-fi, cyborg funk to new audiences, as a modern retool of the style began enjoying the ubiquity of its four-to-the-floor cousins. And few embody its future for our current decade like Sunny Seppä, AKA Sansibar. Cutting his teeth in Helsinki's underground with residencies at Kaiku and Post Bar, Seppä's sound draws from a broad range of influences far from the Finnish capital. His first releases channeled the high-definition Motor City school of electro, but he has since evolved. Not one to be confined by the narrow confines of any genre, the Finnish producer and DJ's discography has steadily begun to encompass a wider palette of influences, including releases with fellow new-gen electro artist Reptant. It's no wonder Seppä has found a home on Kalahari Oyster Cult. Sans Musique was released by Rey Colino's label, and both are united by a love for an amalgamation of gritty and ecstatic sounds of the '90s. As Colino put it himself, the Cult espouses "nostalgia with a modern sound design." You can hear that peppered throughout Seppä's RA Podcast. From Simulant's stone-cold classic "Wav.Form" to shades of tech house from the late '90s and early '00s (as well as some of his own unreleased material), the full vision of his broad sound world comes alive on RA.976. You won't technically hear too much electro in this mix—but underscoring many of the selections is the retro-futurism that electro elicits, that bleary-eyed optimism of dance music's halcyon era. @sunnysibar @sin-sistema-sin Find the interview and tracklist at ra.co/podcast/976

Today's premiere features Mezer The Architects' latest release on POTOP. The Katowice-based label is home to Carti Summer Jam which combines elements of sun-kissed trance, rap and hints of euphoria resulting in his take on a modern-day party track. Hailing from Gdansk, Poland, Mezer The Architect is an accomplished DJ and music producer in the world of electro and ghetto tech. Boasting a residency with the Scottish dance music platform Project Radio. His productions have crept into a variety of sets all over the world and are a combination of booty bass, ghetto house, electro, breaks and hot g-funk native tracks which take inspiration from the West Coast. Recently he has taken a new direction by mixing elements of trance and ghetto in his productions. Initially beginning with uploading his music on Soundcloud, where he is known for his signature sound that combines a range of ghetto elements with vocal-lead samples, Mezer has released tracks alongside artists like Mell G, YTP, Club Cab, Raw Takes and 666uba. Mezer has released his tracks on a wealth of labels, some of which include Angels Gun Club, Crazed Behavior, Gimmeabreakrecords, Your Character, Native Boundaries, Urban Rar and Low Income Squad. His debut EP “Corrupted Minds” gained praise from many DJs around the world, most notably DJ Stingray, who spun Mezer's tracks from the EP relentlessly. Mezer The Architect joins the likes of Chris Flanagan, Diversion, DJ Swisherman and more on POTOP's Swim Club compilation that is due to release in full on July 31st where you can hear Mezer's new production direction take effect by means of him incorporating elements of rap with trance and some old-school house for good measure. Commanding a high degree of production quality throughout the composition is left feeling polished giving for a thoroughly enjoyable listen. In 2020, Mell G dropped out of law studies to pursue music full-time and hasn't looked back since. For good reason too—she's far too busy for any potential regret. Over the past three years, the Hamburg-based artist launched JUICY GANG RECORDS, switched up her DJing style from ghettotech to electro, began touring and started producing. Her year-and-a-half old label is now a go-to source for brazen, bouncy club bangers and her refocused, electro-heavy sound has led to bookings alongside DJ Stingray, Pearson Sound and other heavy-hitters. The rising star is certainly having a moment, yet it hasn't been all smooth sailing. These sudden career ascents can be tricky to navigate emotionally and her upcoming debut album ISSUES expresses some of the mental health struggles she's faced along the way. Her RA Podcast is similarly personal. Moving from retro synthwave to acid-laced techno to UK bass before ending on funky electro, it embodies the core sounds that are near and dear to her. Loaded with lots of gritty low-end frequencies, it's a thrilling ride across contemporary club music that cements her status as an in-demand DJ. @djmellg Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/889

Our first premiere of the week comes from Ctrls on DJ Stingray's imprint, Micron Audio. Ctrls experiments electro and bass heavy tracks on this release to great effect. The Danish producer unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. The Ctrls project came to life in 2012 and the Danish artist immediately made his mark on the techno scene. His fast paced and futuristic techno based sound has now been well established with a stream of respected music on labels such as Token Records, Earwiggle, and Key Vinyl. The Danish artist has held it down at a number of high-profile venues throughout the world, including Tresor, Fold, Berghain, Khidi, Fabric, Kit Kat, Fold, and Club Drugstore, as well as a residency at Ved Siden Af, Copenhagen's purest electronic dance music club. For his next release the formidable techno artist releases on DJ Stingray's imprint Micron Audio as it opens its doors to an external artist for the first time. Across four tracks, the Danish producer unravels a dark and funky electro core, taking inspiration from the rapidly intertwining codependence between technology and society. As digital twins, metaverses or humanoid robots lodge themselves deeper into our surroundings, Ctrls unpicks the deepening complexity brought on by our pervasive digital lives. Encouraged by Micron Audio boss Stingray to delve into the darker productions as a means of exploring a contemporary electro sound, Ctrls fixes a hypnotic heft with fresh industrial sound. ‘Subroutines' is a dark and heavy bass exploration, as Ctrls experiments with sub heavy drums and glitchy synths. Alarming drones play off inky reverb swells. Ctrls captures a cataclysmic atmosphere with profound groove. That CD and digital release featured many of the guests that had appeared on the Bass Agenda Radio show in its first year, such as w1b0, The Exaltics, Sync24, Scape One, The Hidden Persuader, and Alavux. Since 2013 the label has put out over 100 releases on digital, vinyl, CD, and USB formats spanning the various nuanced styles in the Electro genre, and Techno too. Just like the radio show, the focus of the Bass Agenda label is on exploring the wide range of sounds out there and doing so by releasing music by brand new talents, established artists doing new things, and some of the Electro genre's biggest names. The label has been championed since its inception by Dave Clarke and has grown over the years to become a regular source of tracks for home DJs, podcasters, magazines, and some the world's biggest names, including Juan Atkins, DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff, UMEK, Alienata, and many more. In 2020 Bass Agenda Recordings curated and released CAREBOT$, a massive 100+ tracks compilation raising money for NHS Charities Together and Médecins Sans Frontières Covid-19 initiatives. So far, the CAREBOT$ has raised over £10,000. After this project Andy Barton, who runs all things Bass Agenda, decided the label would take a break. The label will return, but no specific date or plans have been made as yet. The Bass Agenda Radio Show continues and broadcasts on www.deepspaceradio.com in Detroit. Guest on the show have included Anthony Rother, The Hacker, Juan Atkins, Detroit in Effect, Dez Williams, Jensen Interceptor, Helena Hauff, CYRK, DJ Godfather, Radioactive Man and over 150 more. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Bass Agenda Recordings : Bandcamp : www.bassagendarecordings.bandcamp.com Facebook : www.facebook.com/BassAgendaRecordings Instagram : www.instagram.com/bassagenda SoundCloud : @bassagenda Triple Vision : www.triplevision.nl/label/Bass+Agenda+Recordings

Since the mid 90's, Vincent Koreman a.k.a. Drvg Cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave and experimental house. Respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno and electro as RA-X in the 90′s on labels like Bunker and KK Records, Koreman comes from a DIY punk background, opting for hard work and political stance rather than hollow pose. Drvg Cvltvre's music takes the speed down a notch to emphasis on the heaviness of sound and using the space left between the pounding kicks to build melancholic melodies that seem to grow out of thin air. A blend of dark techno and deep house with lots of experiment, influenced in equal parts by Suicide, Sun Ra and Terrence Dixon. His discography is a staggering collection of releases on labels like Warp, Permanent Vacation, Viewlexx, Pinkman, Omnidisc, the legendary Nervous Records and his own imprint New York Haunted, that has been gaining momentum as a bastion of cool, experimental house & techno in an increasingly stale and bland music scene. Drvg Cvltvre is a sought after live act and dj that has been playing everywhere from Shanghai to New York and from Sydney to Helsinki, leaving crowds in awe of his hardware live sets and stellar dj selections. Drvg Cvltvre's tracks are staples in several well known Djs sets. His cuts get played by Nina Kraviz, Speedy J, I-F, John Talabot, DJ Stingray, Juan Atkins, Jackmaster, Marcel Dettmann, Helena Hauff and many others. He's been featured and interviewed by Djmag, Mixmag, Resident Advisor and The Wire. -- 081: Drvg Cvltvre from Tilburg, Netherlands https://soundcloud.com/drvgcvltvre https://www.facebook.com/drvgcvltvreofficial

HE VALENCIA is an Indiana midwest based dj, producer, cultural theorist and techno historian who has been active in North American techno since 2010, hotly tipped by the likes of DJ Stingray, Jamal Moss & Carlos Souffront. He contributes to the long legacy of black midwest techno by exploring the many permeations and intersections of techno and other electronic dance music. artist statement: "this particular mix is a direct reflection of my position geographically and sonically, being located between the legacies of Chicago and Detroit. i consider myself a student of the game and always want my sets to reflect the energy of being able to navigate between many different styles of techno or house. Part of this mix is an amalgamation of records that i've been playing throughout the past few years touring and learning about who i am as a dj and finally hitting a point of fluidity to express myself sonically. To me, midwest techno legacy has always been about being able to stitch many different styles together in a consistent way and i hope this mix reflects that". Over his 5 years in Bath, primarily as a student, Saumya Masrani, who chose his last name as his moniker, involved himself in his immediate British electronic music scene, becoming the resident DJ for local promoters Origin Sounds. Subsequently, the Mumbai-born UK-based talent found the opportunity to open for the likes of Scuba, Or:la and DJ Stingray as JUKEBOXX, and later followed the trail to his hometown with support slots for Cinnaman and Lilly Palmer. All the nights of partying seeped into his work as a DJ and earlier this year he showcased the same as a producer with the release of his dark dance track ‘Growling Hunter’. Bringing the same musical knowledge rooted in the British-scene to his Wild City mix, Masrani starts at the disjointed fringes of house and techno and quickly edges into leftfield bass and jungle. There is a pre-headline slot sensibility to the selections which balance atmosphere, with the likes of rRoxymore and Kosh, against energy, through numbers by Cain and Bolam. The presence of tribal and hip-hop inflexions keeps the palette varied and the interest intact while the intensity of a full-blown simmers under the surface of the mix. Listen in as Holler celebrated its 18th birthday on Dublin Digital Radio - ddr. To paraphrase Aretha Franklin, we may be “just 18, but we're old men in disguise." So tune in for another bout of ill-prepared mangling. Beardy started off this one with some drone, from the likes of Chra, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Dean Hurley before turning to lush ambient from Dedekind Cut. Watch out for that mournful descent into the gut wrenching poetry of North Yorkshire’s Adelle Stripe. It will hurt. Reddy stepped in with some D-Bridge dread and filth from Pariah mashing into the first of our Aretha Franklin injections with a song called America’s Nightmare. Things took a turn to variants of thug, deep and soulful house - before the bass whacked back in with club heaters tracks from the likes of Batu, Metrist, rRoxymore, Hodge, Ipman and Pinch. Things get wheeled up with a full on speed garage segment, some classic italo-house and Massive Sounds from NYC don dadda Bobby Konders. Finishing up with some electro/electronic futuristic sounds from DJ Stingray 313, Ceephax Acid Crew, Maelstro, Alphonse and Mike In and some seriously woofer slaying Miami Bass and B-More rescued from the depths of an old hard-drive and the back of the shelves. Holler!
The AMAZING https://soundcloud.com/katiaavorodis is our featured artist this week. A hugely powerful DJ on the forefront of cutting edge club music, Katia is riding on the crest of a female-led electro revival in the techno scene and is making waves not only here but internationally. Channelling influences such as DJ Stingray she weaves an immense selection of tunes mixed with surgical precision for your listening pleasure. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Katia now resides here in Sydney. She constantly experiments and looks for unexpected collisions of different sounds. So when you see this name on a flyer, be sure to get yourself on the floor, close your eyes and be taken to another dimension by this queen of the dance! The warm up mix is taken care of this time around by our beautiful boy Alice D, on a different flex to his usual vibe he absolutely knocks it out of the park with a mix of deep, esoteric techno and some harder acid/electro flavours toward the end. Including tunes from Surgeon, Kohhobba, Alex Coulton, Hodge, Skee Mask, Raxxon. Swerve stalwart Gilsun closes out the podcast, certainly channelling his https://soundcloud.com/oscarmikesound moniker for this one, ever the consummate DJ's DJ, and despite battling through a cold, it's well worth sticking around to the very end on this one people! Get in and around episode 008 fam! This one is DANCE ENERGY PLUS++++

For the seventh issue of the Fractal Club Podcast, we are delighted to host a mix from a Dj/Producer making waves in Berlin's electronic music community. Dirty Lemon, or Alvaro Lagartera, was born in Talavera de la Reina, deep in the Spanish countryside. Developing a love for Electronic Music from an early age has seen him travel to London and Ibiza, soaking up influences along the way, before settling in Germany's capital 7 years ago. Being immersed in such an inspiring environment led to the launch of Panea Records in 2016, with compatriots Aleexe, Gustavo Cardenas and Rodrigo Diaz. Their first EP was very well received, featuring tracks from Primary Perception, Saverio Celestri, and Gustavo Cardenas & Dirty Lemon himself. With a future EP soon to drop, we're very honoured to be hosting such a sweet mix. With tracks from S.Moreira, Saverio Celestri, and labels such as Slow Life, Sleepers, and of course, Panea - this mix takes in Deep House, Electro, Techno, Breaks and Acid, and certainly bangs. You can see influences of DJ Stingray, Drexciya, and Underground Resistance shine through. Big thanks to our friend Carla in Berlin for the link up, we hope to bring some of the Panea crew to Edinburgh in the near future :) For more information on Dirty Lemon & Panea Records, check out the following links; Dirty Lemon FB: https://www.facebook.com/dirtylemonpanea/?fref=ts RA : https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/dirtylemon Panea Records FB: https://www.facebook.com/panearecords/?fref=ts RA : https://www.residentadvisor.net/record-label.aspx?id=13934 discogs : https://www.discogs.com/label/1031758-Panea-Records
Matt Werth sits down with Sherard Ingram, a.k.a. DJ Stingray, to discuss the man behind the mask, the birth of techno in Detroit, and Ingram's involvement with the mysterious electronic music duo Drexciya.
Hailing from Seattle, Archivist's productions and DJ sets inform heavy, warehouse-ready techno with a sense of scale and grandeur that arises unmistakably from the Pacific Northwest. We're proud to welcome him to the podcast series with this hour of sonic and textural exploration, recorded from a recent Secondnature label night. Archivist performs with Abdulla Rashim & DJ Stingray on April 9: https://www.facebook.com/events/1674626099478664/ - More from Archivist: @archivistseattle @secondnatureseattle
We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.
Part of the future never dies. And as owner of the long-running Cultivated Electronics label, Phil Bolland's been making sure that the electro sound pioneered in the early-80's by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Afrika Bambaataa (among others) remains the forward-thinking dancefloor ammunition it always has been. Since starting the label in 2007 (though he's been releasing music on other imprints since 2003), Bolland's dedication to the genre has been unwavering. Electro has fallen in and out of fashion over the years, but it seems to be enjoying another purple patch of late. Recent music from stalwarts such as DJ Stingray and The Exaltics and newcomers like Shanti Celeste prove it's a style that continues to find favour with dancefloors over 30 years since its inception. This exclusive mix from Sync 24 hammers the point home - featuring contemporary material from the likes of Marco Bernardi, J.T.C. and Truss as well as a number of unreleased and forthcoming tracks, it's a heady, focused ride from start to finish that proves electro continues to remain the potent force it always has.
