His Greatest Adrenaline Rush? Serving Others: John Graham John Graham shipped out on a freighter to Asia when he was 16, hitchhiked through the Algerian Revolution at 19 and was on the team that made the first ascent of Mt. McKinley's North Wall at 20, a climb so dangerous it's never been repeated. He hitchhiked around the world at 22, working as a correspondent for the Boston Globe in every war he came across.A U.S. Foreign Service Officer for fifteen years, he served in Libya during the 1969 revolution and in one of the most difficult and dangerous areas in Vietnam during the war there.. For three years in the mid-seventies, he was a member of NATO's top-secret Nuclear Planning Group, then served as a foreign policy advisor for Sen. John Glenn. During a posting at the United Nations, however, his life began to turn. He became deeply involved in U.S. human rights initiatives, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa.Still, something was missing. In 1980, a close brush with death aboard a burning cruise ship in a typhoon in the North Pacific forced him to accept a deeper meaning for his life. He found it in 1983, when he became and still works as a leader of the Giraffe Heroes Project, a global nonprofit moving people to stick their necks out for the common good—and giving them the tools to succeedTo learn more about John Graham, visit www.johngraham.orgTo explore Beyond the Crucible resources, including our free Trials-to-Triumphs Self-Assessment, visit beyondthecrucible.com.Enjoy the show? Send us a textJohn Graham's life reads like an adventure novel, but with a profound transformation at its core. At just 17, he left behind his sheltered existence in Tacoma, Washington, for a summer job on a freighter bound for the Far East. That voyage would set him on a path of increasingly dangerous adventures spanning decades and continents.Graham recounts harrowing experiences with remarkable candor – mountain climbing expeditions where avalanches narrowly missed him, hitchhiking through war zones, and navigating political revolutions. His seemingly insatiable hunger for adrenaline led him to the U.S. Foreign Service, where he strategically positioned himself in the divisions handling wars and revolutions, primarily in Africa and Asia. The turning point came during the Vietnam War. As Graham orchestrated desperate measures during a battle for the city of Hue, he experienced a profound moral awakening: "I didn't give a damn about this war... The only thing that mattered to me was fulfilling my own needs for taking risks." This realization began a transformation that would redirect his considerable skills and courage toward humanitarian work. His most dramatic moment of reckoning occurred years later during the sinking of the cruise ship Prinsendam in the Gulf of Alaska. Trapped in a lifeboat during a typhoon with rescue chances dwindling, Graham had what he describes as a spiritual confrontation that cemented his commitment to meaningful service. Following his miraculous rescue, he joined forces with his wife Ann Medlock at the Giraffe Heroes Project, where they've spent over 40 years telling stories of people who "stick their necks out" for the common good. Now in his 80s, Graham offers wisdom that transcends political divisions: "There's no more important quest for anybody than our personal lives being meaningful." His journey from self-serving adventurer to humanitarian reminds us that finding purpose through service creates bridges across even the deepest divides. John David Graham's story is one of resilience, transformation, and unwavering dedication to helping others. A journey that saw him move from homelessness to becoming a business owner and published author, Graham's life took a pivotal turn when he found his true calling at the age of 53. Recognizing a need to support individuals fresh out of prison, he founded the Good Samaritan Home—a nonprofit agency offering a second chance to those seeking a fresh start.Faced with the struggles of homelessness and a never-ending search for where he fit in the world, he eventually met a remarkable woman who saw potential in him that even the finance company that repossessed his truck couldn't see. With his wife by his side, Graham decided to focus on a deeper purpose—to help those who had experienced similar struggles. By purchasing and remodeling old homes, John transformed them into welcoming shelters for the homeless, laying the groundwork for the Good Samaritan Home.Partnering with the Ohio Department of Corrections, the Good Samaritan Home expanded into transitional housing for individuals reentering society after prison. This innovative approach, tailored to provide independent housing rather than mere halfway housing, has been both cost-effective for the state and life-changing for residents. Today, the organization operates 19 houses with the capacity to host up to 100 individuals at any given time.Building Bridges, Transforming PerceptionsBuilding the Good Samaritan Home was fraught with challenges. Initial backlash from the local community was fierce, culminating in ordinances, petitions, and even police protection for John and his family. However, through patient perseverance and community engagement, such as clearing neighbors' sidewalks during winter, perceptions began to change. Over time, Good Samaritan Home was recognized as a revitalizing force within neighborhoods, rather than a threat, proving that compassion and understanding can break down barriers. The true measure of John's mission lies in the stories of those who've benefited from his work. John shares success stories of former residents who found stability, employment, and even love. These stories are testament to the life-changing potential of the Good Samaritan Home, which embraces individuals regardless of their background, offering them a chance to rewrite their life story.A Legacy of Second ChancesIn his novel, "Running as Fast as I Can," Dr. Graham weaves a fictional narrative that echoes the themes of second chances present in his own life. Despite facing over 200 publisher rejections, Graham was determined to share a story that resonates with everyone—a tale that highlights the importance of multiple opportunities for redemption. As he reflects on societal challenges reminiscent of the 1960s, John remains committed to running his race—supporting one person at a time and advocating for systemic change. His belief in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of a moral universe bending toward justice keeps him grounded and hopeful for the future.Dr. Graham's extraordinary journey from trial to triumph serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on countless lives. Through the Good Samaritan Home, he provides shelter and opportunity while fostering hope and resilience in communities. His story encourages each of us to pursue our passions diligently, believe in the power of second chances, and strive to be part of a moral universe that prioritizes justice and compassion.CHAPTERS:00:00 Introduction to John David Graham00:51 Inspiration Behind Good Samaritan Home02:35 Building Good Samaritan Home10:50 Challenges and Community Resistance16:39 Success Stories and Impact17:53 Writing and Publishing Journey23:21 Reflections on the 60s and Political Climate31:37 Closing Thoughts and Future Plans

Behold! A holiday spectacle so dazzling, so insightful, it'll practically guarantee you a promotion (results may vary, void where prohibited, don't quit your day job). We've wrangled all our favorite (and some we just tolerated) guests from 2024 to deliver scorching hot takes on the burning dumpster fire that is talent, tech, and recruitment. Think less "fireside chat" and more "dumpster fire chat." From AI's inevitable robot overlord takeover of recruiting (will they finally fix the ATS? Don't hold your breath) to the thrilling return of the office (aka mandatory fun times!), we've got the scoop you need to maybe survive 2025. Or at least have something to complain about at the next holiday party. Witness the assembled brain trust, including: Eileen Kovalsky from General Motors: Because even car companies need people to, you know, build cars. Adam Godson, CEO of Paradox: Hopefully, he'll explain what a paradox is without causing one. Jessica Rush, Chief Talent Officer: We're rushing to find the talent, people! Get it? (We'll see ourselves out). Patti Tabris, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at ResultsCX: Because someone has to deal with the results. Stefan Premdas, Director, People Experience at sweetgreen: Hopefully, they brought snacks. J.T. O'Donnell from Work It Daily: Because you're going to need to. Julie Sowash, Executive Director and Co-founder of Disability Solutions: Providing solutions to problems you didn't even know you had! John Graham, the VP of Employer Brand Strategy, Humanity & Culture at Shaker: Because branding is everything, even when it's not. (He appears twice! Clearly, he's got a lot to say...or we messed up the guest list). Emi Beredugo: We're not entirely sure what Emi does, but they're here! Lieven Van Nieuwenhuyze, Co-host from Europe: Bringing you takes from across the pond (probably involving better coffee). Matt Lavery, Global Director of Sourcing, Recruiting, & Onboarding: The man, the myth, the onboarding legend. Lord Wei, A Member of the Science and Tech Committee in the House of Lords: Adding a touch of British pomp and circumstance (and hopefully some actual wisdom). Rebecca Carr, CEO at SmartRecruiters: Because recruiting needs to be smart, obviously. Courtney Dempsey, the Head of Recruiting at Southern Rock Restaurants: Serving up talent as hot as their chicken. Chloé Rada, the Senior Director of Talent Attraction at ZoomInfo: Zooming into the future of talent (get it?). Dean Da Costa, Senior Staff Talent Acquisition at Lockheed Martin: Recruiting the best of the best to build…stuff. Mary Battle Broxton, Leading Employer Brand and Recruitment Marketing at Tractor Supply Company: Because even tractor companies need marketing.

What is your favorite Christmas Movie? One of my favorites has to be "It's A Wonderful Life". In *It's a Wonderful Life*, George Bailey discovers his worth and the profound impact of his life on others. Guided by an angel, he sees a world without his influence, realizing how deeply his choices matter. Similarly, *Homecoming*, the 18th season of *Other People's Shoes*, explores returning to places of safety and belonging, reminding us of the unseen value of our lives and connections. This idea resonates with John Graham and the Good Samaritan Home, a non-profit that has been offering ex-offenders housing and support since 2001. From one remodeled house to 17 homes in Dayton, Ohio, they've helped over 1,000 people rebuild their lives through faith and kindness. Just as George learns that brokenness can lead to redemption, the Good Samaritan Home shows that broken lives, like broken houses, can be restored. Join me as I walk in John Graham's boots.

John Graham, Shaker's VP of Employer Brand Strategy, hit RecFest USA with a mic drop on recruitment marketing and employer branding as we careen into 2025. His talk? A mix of AI hype, DEI drama, and a reality check for those clinging to the idea of "jobs for life" like it's still 1985. Graham's big reveal: employer branding is less about forever and more about for now, pivoting to a launchpad for career development instead of a golden handshake into retirement. He also dove into AI, calling it both the hero and potential villain of recruitment. Sure, it's reshaping strategies faster than you can say "algorithmic bias," but Graham threw some shade on humanity, pointing out that we're not exactly bias-free either. His advice? Play nice with AI but keep an eye on it—like a toddler with scissors. DEI got a spotlight too, but not without acknowledging the current rebrand it's enduring thanks to political tug-of-wars and corporate-level ghosting. He tied it all up with a forecast for 2024 tech trends: automation, AI, and video storytelling are set to dominate, but the focus will still be on keeping things human-centered. (Spoiler: robots are cool, but people still like people.) And if that wasn't enough, Graham's closer was basically a call-to-action to stalk—er, network with—Shaker online. Updated website, LinkedIn, the works. Because nothing says "modern employer branding" like a shameless plug.

3x USA Memory Champion John Graham shares his journey of mastering memory techniques like visualization and memory palaces, and how he overcame anxiety and panic attacks. He discusses effective learning strategies such as active recall and spaced repetition, debunks the myth of fixed learning styles, and reveals his counterintuitive methods for processing suppressed emotions and regulating the nervous system. Learn how John helps high performers release anxiety for good and achieve personal growth by balancing ambition, passion, and letting go. Takeaways Memory techniques such as visualization and memory palaces can help in memorizing large amounts of information. Active recall and spaced repetition are effective learning strategies. Learning styles are not fixed, and it is important to trust one's memory and not limit oneself to a specific style. Anxiety and panic attacks can be overcome by facing and fully experiencing the emotions rather than avoiding or distracting oneself. Optimizing the nervous system and unhooking from anxious thoughts are crucial in managing anxiety. Catalyst merging can help release suppressed emotions without the need for extensive digging or therapy. Regulating the nervous system is the first step in managing emotions and finding relief from daily overwhelm and anxiety. Emotions are often triggered by past experiences, and present-day catalysts can help access and release suppressed emotions. Surrendering and letting go of control is more effective than trying to force change through techniques like meditation or mindfulness. Finding and aligning with one's passion can lead to abundance and fulfillment in life.
