With demonstration events ceasing to exist after 1992, in this podcast, Mushing explores some of these ‘lost sports' of the Winter Games. Dog Mushing was a demo sport at the 1932 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, and some very famous dog drivers competed, including Leonard Seppala and Emile St Goddard.

In 1925, the town of Nome in rural Alaska found itself facing a potentially catastrophic outbreak of diphtheria. Almost completely cut off from the rest of the world by the harsh Winter, the only way to get medicine in was via a relay of 20 teams of sled dogs. The inspiration for the cartoon film Balto, this is the true story of the Nome Serum Run. Curious about dog mushing? You're in good company. Dog racing, known as mushing, is one of the many sports that draws tourists and lures enthusiasts to live in Alaska. But not everyone who mushes is a pro-racer tackling the Iditarod or keeping a huge yard of sled dogs. The north and Alaska are full of amateur racers who take on the sport because they both love dogs and the time in nature running a sled and dog teams brings. Crude Conversations

In this one, Cody talks to dog musher Aliy Zirkle. She's always felt a strong connection to animals, dogs in particular. She tells this story about how when she was a kid and lived in Puerto Rico, there were a couple of stray dogs that pulled her around on a skateboard. Mushing was in her blood, even then.   For 30 years, mushing has been everything to Aliy. It's been her passion and her career. And understanding her dog's abilities and their limits has been key because if you break that — if you break their trust or you ask them to do too much — then they lose confidence in you as their leader. So, Aliy made sure she knew every one of her dogs — their individual personalities, their eccentricities and their limits. Skunk, Commando, Mismo, Mac, Pedro, Rubia, Beemer, Viper, Quito, just to name a few. She knew and knows all of them. They've taught her indispensable truths, like how to live in the moment and how to appreciate the present because that's all we really have.   In 2021, she raced her last Iditarod. It didn't turn out the way she anticipated. Her plan was to win — to be the first racer to pass under the Burled Arch — but about 200 miles into the race, she crashed, hit the back of her head on the ice and was dragged by her arm for an indeterminate amount of time. She had to be airlifted to the hospital, where she found out that she had suffered a concussion, something that she's still recovering from.   As a musher, she has relied on her toughness — her ability to get through difficulties out on the trail on her own. That it's her and the dogs — Team Zirkle, the fan favorite — out there in the Alaska wilderness. The team that always finishes the race. That's been her biggest struggle throughout all of this — that she didn't finish her last race. It weighs so heavily on her sometimes that it's best just not to think about it. She says that the whole situation still seems a little surreal and that she's still trying to make sense of it.

The Iditarod dog mushing race is often called “The Last Great Race,” and Dallas Seavey is one of the big names in that great race. The son of a 3-time winner, he has endured and triumphed on his own, and is currently tied for the most wins at 5. This year he is set to smash the record and claim a 6th win. In this episode we talk about his upbringing, a change in his life plans, and how he continually moves forward, no matter the setbacks. We also have an amazing discussion about leadership - and how in the darkest moments, leaders give selflessly to carry their teams through. Dallas has also won Norway's Finnmarkslopet and has been featured on the NatGeoTV's Ultimate Survival Alaska. Everything he participates in, he wins!! Find Dallas Dallas Seavey on Facebook AK Sled Dog Tours If you enjoyed this episode of Always in Pursuit, please share with a couple friends and leave us a review on whatever platform you use. The harsh conditions include: jagged mountain ranges, thick forest, barren tundra and miles of windswept coast, add in the frigid temperatures and some whiteout conditions and you have an extreme challenge that has been dubbed The Last Great Race. Catskill, New York native Ken Hamm attempted this feat in 1983 at the age of 32. He says his move to Alaska is what sparked his interest in the sport. This year's race begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday March 2, 2019.
