Each year, in early March, a little Alaskan town called Nome acts as the finish line for the world's longest and most spectacular race—the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The race extends over 938 miles from Anchorage to Nome (more than the length of Texas), with the course record standing at seven days and fourteen hours, including two days of required rest for the dog teams. One of the most famous mushers (drivers) in the Iditarod's history is Aliy Zirkle, who competed in twenty-one races but never won, despite coming close multiple times. Many people might see this as a failure or a disappointment, but Ali herself flipped the script and defined her own success, knowing that she was one of the most remarkable mushers in history and not buying into any negative narrative about her race record.Flipping the script is something we can all do, and on today's episode, McKay discusses how to do it and reap the rewards. First up, he discusses negative thoughts and the huge drain they put on our time and energy. He suggests that these thoughts can be flipped by spending time each day writing a new script that fills your mind with positive thoughts to sustain you through the day. This is an important skill both for ourselves and those around us, and McKay uses the example of how parents may be scripting anxiety into their kids to illustrate the impact that flipping the script to something more positive can have on our loved ones. Another script-flipping skill McKay advocates is the ability to look into the future and see things as our future self would see them. He uses the example of singer Donnie Osmond, whose career was judged to be over many times but who kept reinventing himself, repeatedly flipping the script on his career to create new opportunities for success. McKay closes the episode by discussing how to know when it's the right time to flip our script and why it's worth the effort to get a fresh perspective on our goals. The Finer Details of This Episode:Alaska and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Aliy Zirkle and her quest to win the Iditarod Flipping the script and defining your own success Are we scripting anxiety into our kids? How Donnie Osmond flipped the script to let his talent shineQuotes:“The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is run early March of each year. And in that race, mushers and their dog teams travel from Anchorage in the south, across the state and up the coast to Nome in the north. In total, the race extends 938 miles. And that's farther than the length of Texas.”“Would it be nice to win? Yes. But she doesn't buy into the script that others have written that she is not a real success. She is, in fact, one of the most remarkable mushers in history. And the same goes for you and me. We, like Aliy, can flip the script on whatever we're attempting in life.”“Flipping the script has more to do with filling your thoughts with your new script, which will put aside the negative thoughts we might typically have. And most experts in personal change will say that you need to write that script that will consume your thoughts each day, that the first fifteen to thirty minutes of each day is what will prime your thinking for the rest of the day. So I call this time each morning the Flip the Script Session.”“As a father, I used to replay the script in my mind of how hard it was to raise kids. But now, as a grandfather, I have flipped the script. I would pay ten times $300,000 to have the joy and opportunity to do it again. I wish I could flip the time and go back and rescript myself while I was raising kids and have the perspective I do now. I would be a much happier, patient, and better father.”“When you flip the script, the outcome may be the same, you might...

In this one, Cody talks to dog musher Aliy Zirkle. She's always felt a strong connection to animals, dogs in particular. She tells this story about how when she was a kid and lived in Puerto Rico, there were a couple of stray dogs that pulled her around on a skateboard. Mushing was in her blood, even then. For 30 years, mushing has been everything to Aliy. It's been her passion and her career. And understanding her dog's abilities and their limits has been key because if you break that — if you break their trust or you ask them to do too much — then they lose confidence in you as their leader. So, Aliy made sure she knew every one of her dogs — their individual personalities, their eccentricities and their limits. Skunk, Commando, Mismo, Mac, Pedro, Rubia, Beemer, Viper, Quito, just to name a few. She knew and knows all of them. They've taught her indispensable truths, like how to live in the moment and how to appreciate the present because that's all we really have. In 2021, she raced her last Iditarod. It didn't turn out the way she anticipated. Her plan was to win — to be the first racer to pass under the Burled Arch — but about 200 miles into the race, she crashed, hit the back of her head on the ice and was dragged by her arm for an indeterminate amount of time. She had to be airlifted to the hospital, where she found out that she had suffered a concussion, something that she's still recovering from. As a musher, she has relied on her toughness — her ability to get through difficulties out on the trail on her own. That it's her and the dogs — Team Zirkle, the fan favorite — out there in the Alaska wilderness. The team that always finishes the race. That's been her biggest struggle throughout all of this — that she didn't finish her last race. It weighs so heavily on her sometimes that it's best just not to think about it. She says that the whole situation still seems a little surreal and that she's still trying to make sense of it.

This is part 2 of a 2 part conversation with the editors and contributors to a book called How We Stay Free: Notes on a Black Uprising. This book is edited by Christopher R. Rogers, Fajr Muhammad and the Paul Robeson House & Museum and is a great testament to the local dimensions of the Black uprising in Philadelphia in the months after the murder of George Floyd. In this part of the conversation we talk to Gabriel Bryant and Abdul-Aliy Muhammad. These conversations were recorded separately, just due to availability, but are presented here as a unified whole. Gabriel Bryant is an organizer and youth advocate for groups that have included Sankofa Community Empowerment and Philadelphia Community Bail Fund. Abdul-Aliy Muhammad is a Philadelphia-born writer and organizer. They often write about Blackness, bodily autonomy and medical surveillance. In this conversation both Gabe and Abdul-Aliy offer reflections on the Philly Black Radical Collective and on the long work of organizing outside of the spectacle of the mass mobilization. Gabe talks about some of the nuts and bolts of community organizing and building power as well as some recent developments in solidarity organizing for political prisoners including Mumia Abu Jamal's latest campaign #LoveNotPhear. Abdul-Aliy talks about their piece from How We Stay Free, which is titled “Black Trans Lives Matter.” They talk about organizing in defense of Black Trans and Black Queer lives and working with Dominque “Rem'mie” Fells' family after Dominque was murdered in 2020. Featured in this conversation are also two songs from Gabe, whose stage name is Gabriel Prosser, a nod to the enslaved abolitionist who planned a massive slave rebellion in Virginia at the turn of the 19th Century. We'll include links to Gabe's bandcamp in the show notes. After the interviews with Abdul Aliy and Gabriel, How We Stay Free editors Christopher Rogers and Fajr Muhammad rejoin a discussion of other struggles ongoing in Philadelphia. In the show notes, we'll include links to buy How We Stay Free, and possibly get a solidarity copy for a student, elder, organizer or political prisoner. And if you like what we do, we're still trying to get our patreon back where it was a few months ago. We're only down about $20 this month as we release this episode, so if a few of you can commit to $1 a month or more, or a small yearly pledge, we should be able to make that up. Black Philly Radical Collective Abdul-Aliy's piece "As Philadelphia mourns Dominique ‘Rem'mie' Fells, Black trans lives still matter" Our previous conversation with BPRC organizers Megan Malachi & Robert Saleem Holbrook Abdul-Aliy Muhammad's latest on the struggle for MOVE family members to recover their children's remains Gabriel Prosser Bandcamp Songs featured in the episode: “New Season” Gabriel Prosser featuring Verse Mega “F.U.T.U.R.E.” Gabriel Prosser featuring Blak Rapp Madusa -

On a Move. On April 21, 2021 author Abdul-Aliy Muhammad wrote an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer breaking the story of Penn and Princeton have held the remains of 1985 MOVE bombing victims #TreeAfrica and #DelishaAfrica without permission. Since then it has been a whirlwind of action, additional reports, and discovery as more information about the depth of the injustice at the hands of these institutions continues to be brought to light. MOVE's demands are as follows:The immediate return of the remains of Delisha Africa and Tree Africa to The MOVE Family. An immediate apology by the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, the Penn Museum, and Coursera to The MOVE Family and the Black community of Philadelphia for this racist and abhorrent behavior.Financial reparations to The MOVE Family for the continued harm and trauma caused by Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Penn Museum, and Coursera, for the profits made by the use of our relatives as teaching tools and research objects. The termination of Janet Monge from her role as curator at the Penn Museum and faculty in the department of anthropology. The creation of a transparent, public investigation led by a MOVE-approved investigator and funded by the Universities, into how these remains ended up in the Museum's possession over the past 35 years. We need everyone's help to make sure this doesn't fade into the background. Sign the petition, share all the posts, share this podcast. Do you struggle to get medical professionals to listen to you? Are you looking for ideas about what you could implement in your community to help caregivers? Do you know why Scotland is leading the charge on FASD in the United Kingdom? If you want to know the answers to these questions, you are going to want to tune into today's podcast with Aliy Brown. Aliy holds a BA (Hon) in Social Policy from Newcastle University. Currently, she is the Project Manager for FASD Hub Scotland, a support service run by Adoption UK Scotland for all parents and carers across Scotland who are parenting individuals with FASD and the networks and professionals who support these families. Aliy and her husband are parents and home educators to three children who are adopted, one with an FASD diagnosis. Aliy is passionate about raising awareness of FASD, breaking down the barriers for parents/carers, and empowering all those who have an interest in FASD, whether that is professional or personal, to work together for the good of those with FASD. Aliy and her team have a lot going on in Scotland to help not only adoptive parents but especially parents and caregivers of children with FASD. Aliy is an interesting juxtaposition between a super nice individual and someone not to mess with. Her journey to get a diagnosis took two years. She says: We were convinced there was prenatal alcohol exposure and it was FASD. But people weren't on board with that. We had to fight. Our GP was like, “here are some parents who aren't happy with their child.” Does that sound familiar? We talk about how that prompted her to “take the bull by the horns” to get a diagnosis and how you can do that, as well as: How her background prepared her to raise and advocate for individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure. Why she feels like she has to, and what it feels like to continually prove herself as a parent. When the FASD Hub Scotland was started, and its evolution to leading the way in FASD services and support. We also talk about the importance of partners being on the same page and why connecting with others and self-care is critical. I love how she reflected that all she has gone through has led her to where she is today and how her boss inspired her and her team to “go for greatness” to continue and expand their network.
