In this one, Cody talks to dog musher Libby Riddles. She was the first woman to win the Iditarod. Back in 1985, she made the decision to push through a storm — a choice that would cement her place in history. While others hunkered down, she bet on her team's strength and her own resilience, forging ahead into whiteout conditions and brutal winds. It was a bold, calculated risk, and it paid off. But for Libby, just doing the Iditarod was a big deal. She says that as long as she did her best and gave it 100 percent, she really didn't care where the chips fell. And part of that was breaking the race down — not thinking about the entire 1,000 miles, but just getting to the next checkpoint. Manageable goals. That mindset, along with her deep connection to her dogs, helped her make history. Her deep relationship with her dogs helped carry her to victory in the 1985 Iditarod, and in the years since, she's become an advocate for the sport, working to help people understand what dog mushing is really about. These days, it can be tricky for people to grasp— most of us see dogs as companions, not as athletes bred for endurance and work. But those who rely on working dogs, like service animals, tend to understand the dynamic better. And when people see sled dogs in action — on a dogsledding tour or in a race — they get it. They see the excitement, the energy, and the joy these dogs have for running, and they start to understand why mushing isn't just a sport, it's a way of life.

What does it mean to live in harmony with nature? In this episode of Brown Enough, we head to the snow-covered trails of Utah to go dog sledding with Dana and Fernando, the founders of Rancho Luna Lobos. More than just a sled dog sanctuary, Rancho Luna Lobos is a way of life—rooted in respect, balance, and deep connection to the land and the animals that call it home. We talk about their journey, the wisdom they've gained from their dogs, and the lessons we can all learn about trust, leadership, and finding our place in the natural world.
Alex Therriault might have it all figured out. He's turned his love of animals and dog sledding into a successful business and racing career.Coming from a family of dog sledders, Alex still races and now offers tours and trips for people looking to learn more about these animals and the sport, or just to have a unique weekend in Maine. For more information, check out the Ultimate Dog Sledding Experience website or follow them on Instagram.

In this episode, I'll share a client's story who has been with me for THREE YEARS! This is the fourth installment of my mini series where I share REAL results from REAL Fit is Freedom members. Journey to Reaching Your Goals: A Client's Story 4 Is three years too long to go from flabby and unmotivated to having your Pilates instructor stop in front of you and say: "You have killer arms"? Yes, three years feels like such a long time, but time flies when your life is rocking! But, it wasn't always the case. Get The fitness consistency book that will change your life! Where it Started Three years ago she was, in her words… “I was doing a terrible job of motivating myself, and I had quit taking care of my body. In my mind, nothing was more important than work. Exercise was a thing of the past. My body didn't feel great, and my mind was foggy. My good mood was gone and I didn't feel right. I'd tried accountability with a friend, but as you say, Kelly, it doesn't work with a friend because a friend will always let you off the hook. I was sure that with a group of women I didn't know, I would feel more accountable. So true, right? I also needed guidance, not even sure where to start. I was looking for a place to start, motivation and the support I needed to keep going!” Results Her first big wins? Better sleep & eliminating painful knees! “The very first big win I had was sleep. I sleep now.:) I was sleeping very poorly, and I didn't realize how much lack of exercise was affecting my health. Getting out of pain was huge too. I'd had knee surgery a year before, and my knee was okay, but not terrific. What it needed was for me to move it, but I thought using it would hurt it more, until we started talking and I started moving. (Now it's doing what knees are supposed to do)” Her next big wins? Vitality, energy, a happy mindset & strong, fit legs! “I didn't have energy, plus I'd become flabby. After a few months in the group I remember one very specific day. I was walking down the stairs in my house, and caught my reflection in the mirror at the bottom of the stairs. WOW. My legs looked so much better, and they felt so much stronger. I'm thin, so I could put on clothes and hide my lack of muscles, but that doesn't mean I didn't feel it inside. I wanted to feel great. So strengthening and toning were big game changers for me. And my happy mindset is back.” Of course, there were setbacks along the way, it's life, right? She had some injuries, she had some pain, but she had a plan. She had accountability. She had support and she always got back on track. That's what happens when you master fitness consistency. Even when you get offtract or life throws you curveballs, you trust yourself to restart because you're a new woman now! And the wins just keep coming! Today, her energy, health, body, mind, and fun are priorities in her life and her excitement is infectious. She still runs an extraordinarily successful real estate practice without letting her business run her life. She even finds time to lead some of the Fit is Freedom Adventures, like kayaking and hiking the San Juan Islands and Dog Sledding in the winter! Life just keeps getting better. Jenny has learned the magic trick; when you give yourself the gift of fitness, you give yourself the life you've always desired. What do you want from this one precious life you have? Living in the center of a continuous forest, my nomadic bird dogs don't spend much time walking on a leash around our home. As a result, they have terrible leash manners. Luckily for me, their tendency to pull works wonderfully with pulling sports like skijoring and kicksledding, as long as you can get them to stop. This is where “whoa” comes into play. This one word allowed me to dive into winter dog sports with my bird dogs. “Whoa” is a critical command nearly every pointing dog and sled dog owner uses. In both worlds, it simply means “halt.” This term encourages or demands steadiness on birds in the upland scene. However, regarding sled dogs, this command is paired with heavy pressure on the foot brake while setting the snow hook.

Welcome back to Supernatural Park! We're exploring the Northeast Greenland National Park today and we're doing it by dog sled! Traditionally, dogsledding has been the best way to get around this land of ice, especially since there are no roads for miles, and no big cities for that matter either! We're going whale watching today, or rather Akhlut watching. A shapeshifting wolf that turns into a whale, you'll want to watch out for pawprints that lead to or from the shore and then disappear. We'll also be exploring what it means to be a part of a community and how orca whales interact with theirs. Watch out for the Qiivitoq and remember; do NOT feed the wildlife! If you're interested in learning more about the southern resident killer whale and ways you can help protect this critically endangered species, please visit www.NOAAfisheries.gov and NWF.Org and search for the keyword orcas. At one point in his life, Jonathan Horn mushed. He tried dogsledding just once, but it let him know firsthand the cruelty of the activity. He saw what it did to his lead dog, Bianca. Horn, now a PETA campaigner, talks about how he uses Bianca's memory to fight for the end of the grand symbol of dogsledding, the Iditarod. Horn was just coming back from Alaska and on his way to another PETA demonstration when he took some time at an airport to talk with Emil Guillermo about the just-completed 50th Iditarod. It's still a cruel enterprise that has no real purpose but to subject hundreds of dogs to real suffering. Take action to end the Iditarod. Go to PETA.org. What we do in any situation is either a response, a reaction, or inaction. Peter and Todd discuss their thoughts and perspectives about stimulus and what we do in reply to it. We share with each other, and you all, how playing with the exposed dials led us to more meaningful ways to learn from these things. Related points: First responders, not first reactors. A reaction may not move a situation forward, a response may be more effective. Can responses become more natural or override reactions? Transactional vs Transformational interactions. Intoxication leads to poor reactions. A pause in time to contemplate how we respond, vs a knee jerk reaction without thinking. In the moment, reactions can have a greater impact or utility (think safety). Mental habit / action / tool examples: Taking time when we see we have reacted and use that as a point to consider how to respond differently in the future - leads to being a more transformational figure for others. If you don't know something, state that as your response. Owning our shortcomings can garner respect from others. Look for emotions in ourselves to be aware of opportunities to better respond. Quotes/quips: "If you do the easy things now, life will be hard. If you do the hard things now, life will be easy." "Always tell someone why you are teaching them, what you are teaching them." "The more difficult response becomes the most rewarding in the end." Rando links: Dog Sledding in Maine --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/peter-driscoll/message

Kristin is now remarried and has started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country.
