Jason and Matthew speak with Leon Ford about his advocacy and activism in Pittsburgh and across the United States. The conversation weaves in and through the wisdom that Leon has earned through tragedy, pain and self reflection...and its relationship to our work of protest and partnership. --- Leon Ford, a native of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania born on March 16, 1993, has accomplished so much in such a short period of time. The well-known author, International speaker, and 2019 City Council candidate for Pittsburgh, PA District 9 has devoted his life to the betterment of his community. Leon Ford is a well-respected activist, mental health ambassador and social advocate of change through his leadership. Ford’s influence in his community has divulged a heroic display of strength, wisdom, faith, and fortitude. His knowledge of social disparities and injustice comes from personal experience. When Leon was 19 years old his life drastically changed. November 11, 2012, he was unjustly shot five times by the Pittsburgh Police during a racially charged traffic stop. This horrific case of mistaken identity has left him physically paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, but Ford hasn’t allowed his circumstances to deter him from having a positive impact on his community. Through mentorship, he has sparked a movement cultivating leaders, organizers and social entrepreneurs by empowering them to use their voices, platforms, and resources to evoke change and reshape their communities for generations to come. His mentorship endeavors have transcended into Universities. Ford’s latest partnership with Duquense University bridges the gap between the community, students, professors and community leaders through a program known as “The Voices Project”. While Ford is passionate about educating the community he has also devoted time to work with police officers to help provide clarity on cultural competency. His work also includes working with PA legislators to draft policies that modify the use of force laws, which will intern increase chances to receive justice during officer involved shootings. You might recognize Dr. Megan Cannon (above) from episode 49 where the topic of our conversation was managing post-concussion symptoms.  Dr. Cannon has extensive training within the field of psychology. She received her Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University in 2013, after earning a Bachelors Degree in psychology from Wilkes University.  Dr. Cannon works with teams and athletes at all different levels in their careers across the country. Erin Sparrold, CN, MET (above) is a Sports Nutritionist with the Mind of the Athlete group and has over 20 years of nutrition coaching experience.  Erin holds a degree in nutrition science from the University of Arizona and a sports specific certification in metabolic efficiency training. A major focus of her studies is on nutritional interventions for treatment of anxiety and depression which can be problematic for both healthy and injured athletes.  You might remember Erin from episode 55, where we talked about nutrition both for athletes looking to improve their performance on the field and for those who are out of the game either temporarily or long-term.  When an athlete is out of the game due to an injury, illness, retirement or other obstacle, a focus on nutrition can help distract from negative thoughts and puts you in control of getting healthy. The next two episodes are going to focus on body image struggles for female athletes. Megan and Erin frequently work together on this topic in both the clinical and educational settings.  Next week we hear from former pro tennis player Neha Uberoi where we talk about her personal struggles with body image throughout her career. You can find notes on this weeks episode below. Body Image Concerns for female athletes: The conflict: There is a huge emphasis on being "thin" in our society, but for some sports, women are required to become "bigger" and more muscular. How social norms influence body image perception. Social Media The challenge of athletes constantly seeking measurable results.  The number on the scale. Not knowing whether it’s muscle or fat. Muscle GAINZ leading to tighter fitting clothes. The danger in developing fearful relationships with food. Meal Prep Body image perception by sport. Whether it’s basketball, crew, wrestling, softball or gymnastics you see a lot of pressure to be a certain body set. Some of these sports also depend on the position played. Endurance sports largely affected. Social medias role Comparing yourself to teammates, coaches, Instagram models. Very contradicting source of information for dieting for athletes. Perceptual body image vs. how others view your body image.  The Red Flags of eating disorders. Coaches influence on eating disorders. Words can be a form of gospel to these athletes. Sometimes out-dated information. Equipment/apparel (e.g., singlet, speedo, spandex) Can't discourage an athlete to participate in that sport. The evolution of uniforms  Sexualization vs. Performance Why there needs to be a shift in mentality from skinny to powerful. Is it okay to wear makeup while playing a sport? Athleta catalog shift Some great body image role models: USA Olympic Gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman have gone through being scrutinized for being too “muscular,” but their response is that this is how they won Olympic Medals .  "It is 2017 and there is NO perfect or ideal body type." - Aly Raisman "you all can judge my body all you want, but at the end of the day it's MY body. I love it & I'm comfortable in my skin" - Simone Biles WHERE CAN YOU FOLLOW DR. CANNON? INSTAGRAM | TWITTER | LINKEDIN WHERE CAN YOU FOLLOW ERIN SPARROLD? Their mission is to help athletes thrive and they do so by providing the highest quality one-on-one coaching, team consulting, and speeches. In Episode 49 we hear from Dr. Megan Cannon and the topic of our conversation is managing post-concussion symptoms.  Dr. Cannon has extensive training within the field of psychology. She has worked with individual athletes and teams at schools such as Old Dominion University, Bucknell University, University of Pittsburgh, Lafayette College, Lehigh University, Duquense University, and many more.   The team at Mind of the Athlete have been highlighted numerous times in the media. Recently, Dr. Cannon appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter with Zubin Mehenti as an expert on sports psychology (see below). Dr. Megan Cannon joins the cast of ESPN's flagship program Sports Center to discuss the actions of Kyle Lowry after he left Game 2 early in the 1st half against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Playoffs. During her time at Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Cannon had the opportunity to work in the Sport Psychology Program within the university’s Sports Medicine Clinic. She gained experience providing performance coaching and individual therapy to college student athletes, along with completing presentations and team-building activities with collegiate, high school, and youth club teams. Dr. Cannon also administered the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT 2.0) program to assess athletes’ baseline and post-concussive cognitive functioning and assisted in establishing return-to-play decisions.  This topic was the focus of our discussion in this episode.  Below is an outline of our talking points: Dr. Cannon's athletic and dance background Importance of staying connected/engaged while injured Why it's important to think of concussions as injuries of function not structure The effectiveness of baseline testing Methods of administration and why it's important Necessary academic accommodations to maximize recovery Return to play progressions How to utilize the benefits of exercise for mood without exacerbating symptoms Preventing feelings of isolation Overcoming the fear of returning to play Helping athletes put things in perspective with piling up school work and and missing games What to do when people don’t believe your symptoms or think you are "faking it" Preston Plevretes story (see below) Managing uncontrollable emotions The importance of athletic trainers CTE vs. Loss of Identity, what's worse? Importance of goal adjustment "I could have sat out for a season, but now I will sit out the rest of my life" The Preston Plevretes story has always been a special one to me.  We both suffered from second impact syndrome because we hid signs of concussions (headaches) and returned to play too soon.  I remember seeing this video for the first time in my sophomore year at Rutgers University after my friend Liam sent me the link.  Up to that point, I had never heard of any other athletes who had survived from our injury.  I got extremely emotional after watching this, and honestly felt a little guilty because of the differences in our cognitive outcomes.  There are two things I will never forget about this E:60.  Because we didn't sit out for our concussions, we now sit out for the rest of out lives.  I want every athlete to understand the magnitude of this statement.  Although it is important to focus on what you CAN do after injuries, there are plenty of fun things I can't do because I didn't listen to my body on October 5th, 2007.  I say this because Second Impact Syndrome is 100% preventable if you give your brain sufficient time to recover after the initial concussion. Preston states that he wants to learn how to speak well enough again so that he can prevent other athletes from making the same mistake that we made, which was the decision to play with a concussion. Although I can't play football anymore and need to avoid situations where I can hit my head, I have very few limitations from my injury.  I was one of the lucky ones.  This is one of the main reason's why I started the podcast, which is to be the voice for athletes like Preston who weren't as lucky as I was. I pray that athletes learn from our mistakes in this podcast.  I hope it helps to extend their careers long into the future, and for those whose careers are cut short due to any of life's circumstances, I hope it provides you with a roadmap toward success and achievement in other endeavors.  WHERE CAN YOU FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MIND OF THE ATHLETE?
