Cindy EllPresident and Founder, Fire Fighter Cancer FoundationCindy Ell is a retired firefighter/Critical Care Paramedic originally from Anne Arundel County MD, with a background in emergency communications, critical care and labor advocacy. After a cancer cluster occurred among the firefighters she served with in Maryland, Cindy began researching and tracking firefighter cancer in 1990. As a result of her findings, The Fire Fighter Cancer Foundation was launched in 2004.Unfortunately, Cindy did not miss the bullet. Cancer struck her as well in 2005; she was reminded of the importance of a strong support system and the value of an organization providing timely resources and guidance. As men and women in areas of firefighting have a tendency to isolate themselves when they become ill, she set out to change that mindset and bring people together. Her early efforts resulted in a strong collaboration of peers who provide their stricken member with anything from teaching advocacy, tangible resources, trips to doctor's offices, behavioral support to the family and more.Since that time, the work of Cindy and the dedicated members of the FFCF has led to establishment of a multitude of programs, resources and research that have impacted the lives of firefighters and family members around the world.Recognized for her ability to break down barriers associated with firefighter cancer, Cindy is a much sought-after keynote speaker and has participated in many national forums, summits and conferences, creating awareness and advocacy for the firefighter community. In 2014, she was presented with the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award for her outstanding work during the San Francisco – Los Angeles Firefighter Cancer Awareness Ride surrounded by firefighters from all over the United States.Presently, the organization continues its work to extinguish cancer in firefighters throughout the world. Functioning as a “Consumer affairs” resource for fact-checking industry products and processes, The FFCF continues to build momentum and awareness across science, medicine and academia with a focus on #TechSavesLives.PLEASE SUPPORT THIS PODCAST BY TAKING A LOOK AT OUR SPONSORSThrottle & Thrive First Responder Addiction Recovery: https://throttleandthrive.com/MyPodcast.Media: https://MyPodcast.MediaEPISODE LINKS:https://www.ffcancer.orgPODCAST WEBSITE:https://burntoutpodcast.orgBURNT OUT CREW:Host: Skip OMental Health Minute: Melissa HSunday Support Zoom Meeting Facilitator: Jeff DBonus Episode Host: Capt. In the face of it, Bob may seem like an odd choice to write a book about what front-line healthcare workers experienced during COVID and its long-lasting effects on their mental health. He's not a doctor, or a nurse, or even a hospital administrator. But when it comes to post-traumatic stress, he knows of what he speaks. In the 1970s, as a young New Jersey state trooper, Delaney developed the condition after spending three years working undercover infiltrating the Mafia. He learned firsthand about the disruptive, potentially long-term impact traumatic events have on one's well-being and the need to be cognizant of the enormous levels of stress many of us experience. The recipient of President Barack Obama's Volunteer Service Award for his post-traumatic stress education work with the military, he has devoted his life to raising awareness about PTS. That's why he felt motivated to investigate and write about the emotional turmoil he knew was taking place during the height of pandemic. Heroes are Human is comprised of stories told by frontline health-care workers, their family members, and those in their care. Delaney has many of the people in the book share their story. To learn more about Bob, email Lissa at LissaWarrenPR@gmail.com.

For more than 23 years, Kathy Lambert has worked to disrupt the cycle of poverty with a holistic family approach. Her journey began in 1997 after she read an article about Dress for Success New York, a nonprofit dedicated to helping women re-enter the workforce by providing interview clothing. To help address the need for transportation, Kathy's husband, Brad, started Wheels for Success, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting individuals and families with reliable transportation. In 2001, Kathy and Brad merged their organizations to create Connections to Success (CtS) with the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty and incarceration for the next generation.Kathy has provided passionate leadership and overseen CtS's growth into a regional nonprofit with sites in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. Today CtS is nationally recognized as an evidence-based model for Economic Mobility, improving children's futures by helping parents gain social capital and achieve economic independence. Key Takeaways:The best laid plans can go out the window. Abundance starts in the mind. When you shift your mindset from lack to abundance, your reality will be transformed as well. Our thoughts create our words, our words create our reality. How we speak, think and receive people shapes how our world can be. It's deeply ingrained in non-profit workers that doing good work has to take a toll on the worker, that they need to treat themselves less in order to serve the “greater good”. The truth is - that kind of thinking is out of alignment from the purpose and is greatly unsustainable. “Just because somebody is in a non-profit doesn't mean that they should make less… there has to be a shift in the mindset in regard to that” - Kathy Lambert Reach out to Kathy Lambert at:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kblimpactpartnersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kathy-lambert-kblimpactpartners/Website: https://kblimpactpartners.com/ Be more confident, credible & convincing to your board & supporters without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy.Learn to manage your mindset, lead yourself and others more effectively and have the meaningful conversations that drive your most important work. And sometimes that means even taking a step backwards... to actually get that under your belt."30:03 "I was never about the title. I wasn't quite about the paycheck... I managed to escape school without much debt and I don't live an opulent lifestyle. So I was very much able to focus on the rewards of a job rather than just the paycheck itself."37:19 "Honestly, I think it's because in my life I've always kind of sought the path of most resistance because I felt that's actually a great way to learn and add value."37:55 "I wasn't content with the status quo. I'm not saying things are bad, but you can always improve things. And so I was always kind of looking for that value add change."39:49 "If you keep looking for differences, you're not going to have a good experience. And unfortunately a lot of people, they didn't have a good experience."53:22 "You always try to help your community or your neighborhood, right? According to the Blended Future Project, even though multiracial and multiethnic identity can absolutely be a fluid and difficult road to understand, Blended Future Project would like to create a platform to initiate that understanding. To start this process, the Blended Future Project is creating a new cultural identity where multiracial and multiethnic people are understood and free to develop and collaborate their own unique culture(s). They believe this would not only benefit the growing population of multiracial and multiethnic peoples, but also adopted individuals who may not even know their racial or ethnic backgrounds, or third culture kids who have grown up in a country with a different societal culture from their parents. With this, Blended Future Project is actively uniting multiracial and multiethnic people and integrating them fluidly into the cultural communities of all other racial and ethnic groups. I had the honor of speaking with the leaders of the Blended Future Project, Maris Lidaka and Beth Chin, on June 2nd, 2021, to further discuss the hurdles of creating such a blended future and what that future may look like, as well as hearing about their own mixed-identity journeys. Beth Chin was born and raised in the Chicagoland area and was seventeen when she co-founded her first non-profit organization with her friends in high school, earning them the President's Volunteer Service Award from Barack Obama. Being of Chinese, German, and Polish descent, her work focuses on multi-racial identity. She is the founder of the All Related Art collective in Hamburg, Germany, as well as the author of Being Mixed: A Visual Guide on Mixed Identity. Chin is the creator of Blended Future Project, Re-Mixed – A Multicultural Festival, and is working to create more events and bring greater community in the years ahead. Maris Lidaka is the founder of The Blended Future Project. Born in Oak Park, IL, he is of African-American and Latvian heritage, and has spent the past 20 years working in the entertainment industry in a variety of capacities for large companies such as Disney, Warner Bros, AT&T and Verizon. He created The Blended Future Project to empower the experience of being multiracial and multicultural. With the ultimate goal to create a larger space for empathy and understanding. Tonight's special guest is Rev Henry (Hank) McGrath from Caroga Lake, NY, a child abuse survivor, author, and NAASCA's Volunteer Regional Director for the North East US as a part of our Ambassador Program. He has started a NAASCA support networking group in NY. Hank began life in a poor 2nd-generation Irish family with 4 siblings in NY. Both parents were alcoholics and his mother likely had bipolar/schizophrenia. Hank was targeted with extreme and horrific tortures never knowing why he was singled out. By age 9, he was forced door-to-door asking, "My mother said we are too poor to take care of me. Can I live here?” By age 11 he was hustling to survive in Pittsburgh, PA with bookies, pimps, and prostitutes. It was dangerous for a child alone, and Hank carried trauma from it his whole life including abuse he endured while in the juvenile detention system. His adult life began with crimes, prison, and frequently moving between states. However, after decades of hard living and a few near-death situations, he began facing his childhood trauma and by the 90's was happily married. When his beloved wife died from cancer in 2001 Hank promised her to fight for others on the issues of child abuse. Since then, he has worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, as a court advocate for youth, and even received the President's Volunteer Service Award and Points of Light Award. Today, Hank is a minister and is very active in his community including as the Director of 'Focus on Fathers' and 'Neighborhoods Against Drugs', as a Red Cross Disaster Trainer, and an investigative reporter and host for "Voice of the People-FreedomRadio.”
