Trashifada continues with a deep dive on the origin of the Koch-funded British anti-PC-hysteria-hysteria blog Sp!ked. We go through their origins in seventies Trotskyism to the bizarre posh ultraleftism in the eighties until they emerged as the magazine Living Marxism, famous for satirizing the nanny state and denying the genocide of Bosnian Muslims. From there they formed the Institute of Ideas, a collection of tiny front groups that have helped them along to mainstream media prominence. But to what ends? We offer a range of theories. Listen this Friday for a Bonus Real Sp!ked hours to hear some hot takes on goths, Karen-bashing, and Jimmy Saville. Support the show at http://patreon.com/theantifada Follow us on Twitch! Transcript of episode Music Credit: Make your dream a reality by Scott Holmes
Named after the Easterhouse area of Glasgow, the band was formed in Stretford, near Manchester by brothers Andy and Ivor Perry, Peter Vanden, Gary Rostock and Michael Murray in the early 1980s.[2] Andy Perry, intrigued by communism and inspired by Bob Marley's direct delivery of political content, was invited to join the band in order to improve its lyrical content. Perry's political stance reflected the perspectives of the then active Revolutionary Communist Party, with particular regard to Irish politics. Easterhouse played their first gig on 30 August 1983 at Dingwalls in London as the support band for The Smiths after Ivor Perry convinced Morrissey to let them have the opening spot. Their Rough Trade singles "Whistling In The Dark" and "Inspiration" were both Top 5 independent chart hits. Their energetic first album, Contenders, featuring their signature song, "1969", has been compared to The Chameleons, New Model Army, and The Smiths. In July 1986, Easterhouse participated in the Festival of the Tenth Summer. After Contenders, Ivor left the band; by the time second album Waiting for the Redbird was released in 1989, Andy Perry was the sole remaining member of the original line-up. It produced a minor hit, "Come Out Fighting", which had significant airplay in the US, and spawned a Justin Strauss remix version of the same song.
Laura is a community artist and has been for about 16 years now. 12 of those years have been spent at The Corner in Dundee, a health and information service in Dundee, bringing amazing projects to life and influencing the lives of many young people. We go on a journey from where she started as a 20year old working for the lighthouse in communities like Easterhouse in Glasgow to the amazing projects she has created in Dundee like repainting Reform Street as part of Reformation. We talk about some of the issues facing young people today and the role that the corner plays in that. I wasn't really surprised that mental health is high on the agenda and Laura does see some correlation between the rise in social media use and issues with mental health. We talk about the wider issue and her involvement with the Shpeel project, an interactive installation created by Biome Collective for the London Design Beinnale. What really impressed me about Laura is her ability to just make things happen and to learn the skills needed to make other people's dreams become a reality. As a city, we need those people as much as the creatives themselves. I've had a few guests like Gillian Easson, Claire Dow and Annie Marrs who I feel all do this amazingly well in Dundee. Meet James Dean of Platform Glasgow. This interview is for those, even in Glasgow, whose muscle memory associates the east end of the City with nowt but crime & poverty. It's for those who've been to the Barrowlands for a gig but stepped no further into the perceived darkness beyond. It's for those who feel there's no point exploring the empty, forgotten, barren land east of Glasgow Green when there's the delights of the city centre & west end on offer. Before this interview I knew a little about what's going on in the east end. After it I realised that I just knew little. My eyes were well and truly opened during this conversation at the Bridge, a breathtaking space in Easterhouse that for the last 9 years has been pulling together all the good things in the community and showing it off in style. James talks quietly with passion about the art, music and culture being tapped by Platform every day with a myriad of events, festivals, concerts, installations and arts projects in the area. He tells us about the Calton Action Barras Plan, PEEK Project, Pulse, the Barras Art and Design Centre, the Pipe Factory, the soon to be opened east end's answer to Oran Mor in the centre of a regenerated music quarter at the Barras, and the heart-warming projects changing lives at the Bridge.Listening to James talk effortlessly about what's going on makes me pretty embarrassed about how much I've been missing for so long right on my doorstep. Not any longer!
This week, a new Scottish Labour leader is elected, Lesley speaks in an Alloa charity shop and a shed project in Easterhouse closes. Elsewhere Nigel Farage and Russell Brand trade verbal blows and the Amazon review crowd deflate some hot air.

There's a Soundsculpture of dressmakers scissors, and a Thing About Me feature from baritone Christopher Purves. Inheritance Tracks are from footballer and pundit Robbie Savage.Producer: Dixi Stewart.
