What began as a simple injury turned into a lifetime of adventure for 68-year-old Duane “Mike” McHale. After an Achilles injury ended his running days, he took up swimming, then cycling, and eventually triathlons. He’s since completed more than 140 multisport events and now focuses on extreme endurance challenges around the world. His adventures include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, biking the 450-mile RAGBRAI ride in Iowa, swimming 22 miles through the Maldives, and more. Most recently, Mike completed a 390-mile ride across the Erie Canal alongside his 15-year-old grandson, Gavin. Groundbreaking took place in late July on a brand new, 16 thousand square foot roundhouse at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. It will be home to six historic steam locomotives, a major step forward in preserving Pennsylvania's railroad heritage. The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania have spearheaded a "Ready For The Roundhouse" fundraising campaign, already raising over $300,000 to support restoration work associated with the locomotives that will be housed in the new structure. The 13.5 million-dollar project is set to be completed in early 2027.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
POET Technologies Inc executive chairman and CEO Dr Suresh Venkatesan talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's transition from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, marking a major milestone in its commercial journey. Dr Venkatesan explained that POET is pioneering wafer-scale packaging technology that integrates photonics with electronics, a capability increasingly in demand due to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence applications. He noted that while such manufacturing approaches are common in semiconductors, “there has never been an equivalent in the photonics world,” which is where POET is positioning its innovation. The company has established a new manufacturing ecosystem in Penang, Malaysia, partnering with contract manufacturers Globetronics and Nationgate. POET has installed its proprietary equipment in dedicated cleanroom facilities at these locations. According to Venkatesan, this allows the company to scale production beyond one million optical engines annually. He highlighted that NationGate, Nvidia's only Southeast Asian manufacturer, plays a vital role in POET's module assembly for AI hardware. “We chose NationGate largely because of their capability in optical module assembly and packaging,” he said. Looking ahead, Venkatesan said investors should monitor the company's progress as it ramps up manufacturing and fulfills engagements with tier-one and tier-two customers. While most 2025 revenues are expected from non-recurring engineering (NRE), the company anticipates substantial growth as customers move into production phases. During the hearing for Richard Allen on August 1, 2024, several key developments unfolded in the Delphi murders case. The hearing included arguments from both the defense and the prosecution regarding the conditions of Allen's detention and his mental state.Allen's defense team argued for his relocation from Westville Correctional Facility to the Cass County Jail. They cited poor conditions at Westville, which they claimed were negatively impacting Allen's mental health and hindering their ability to prepare a defense. Testimonies were presented supporting this argument, including evidence that Allen had made incriminating statements in jail, which the defense attributed to his compromised mental state. The prosecution did not object to the proposed relocation, though logistical concerns were raised by local law enforcement.Lawyers for Allen also argued for the admission of their Odinism theory, and had experts provide testimony explaining why it was necessary. Judge Frances Gull postponed the discussion on whether ballistic evidence would be admissible in the trial, scheduling it for a later date. About Joe Beatrice, Founder: Joe Beatrice has built his career on new ideas. A former marketing and technology entrepreneur, Joe founded his first company, Blue Dingo Digital, in the 1990s to help companies use the Internet to establish, brand, and grow their products. But after 20 years, Joe was ready for a change. A longtime homebrewer, Joe saw the true magic of spirits after a transformative experience tasting whiskey straight from the barrel for the very first time. In 2013, he launched Barrel Craft Spirits in Louisville, Kentucky, the epicenter of the American spirits industry. Instead of building his own distillery, Joe questioned the conventional wisdom and took a different course. He sourced and blended exceptional casks from established producers, bottled whiskeys at cask strength, and sold them as transparently as possible. That approach was unique in the United States, but not the world. Scotland's long-established independent bottlers were a major inspiration, and Joe was captivated by their ability to elevate barrels of whisky into something greater than the sum of their parts. He sensed that American consumers, too, would embrace the chance to explore whiskey in an entirely new way. Joe sold early releases case by case, personally pounding the pavement to drum up interest from bartenders and retailers. It turned out his visionary instincts were spot on once again. Barrell Craft Spirits' cask-strength small-batch and single-barrel releases quickly became an influencing force in American whiskey, picking up awards from the world's most prestigious spirits competitions. Joe remains intimately involved with every step of the production process at Barrell Craft Spirits, using his exceptional palate alongside master blender Tripp Stimson to choose and create great spirits. Creative finishes, a liberated approach to blending, and a deep-seated commitment to releasing each whiskey at cask strength and without chill filtration - just like that fateful barrel tasting years ago-continues to guide every product release. Tripp Stimson, Director of Distillery Operations & Chief Whiskey Scientist: Tripp hails from Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 2004, following his graduation from Tennessee Technological University with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, he was recruited as a Research and Development Scientist for the Brown Forman Corporation, headquarters to Jack Daniel's, Woodford Reserve and Old Forrester. There he gained his experience in yeasting, fermentation, and the distillery sciences and operations that make a distillery operate successfully and efficiently. Following his 9 years with Brown Forman, Tripp formed his own consulting company providing the technical expertise needed to design, build and efficiently run a new distillery. He's been a key component in the success of distilleries around the country. Most recently, he helped to design and build the Kentucky Artisan Distillery, where he was later employed as Master Distiller and the Director of Distillery Operations. He oversaw all the Jefferson's Reserve project design and implementation including Jefferson's Groth, and Jefferson's Barrel Aged Manhattan. Additionally, he built the first malting operation in Kentucky in 2016. Tripp met Joe Beatrice at Kentucky Artisan Distillery and they began their work there together blending and producing interesting and unique whiskeys. He joined Barrell Craft Spirits in January of 2017 as the Master Distiller and Director of Distillery Operations and is responsible for developing our product formulation and leading the distillery building initiative.
