Jim Walters in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.facebook.com/DasDamenOfficial The band was formed in 1984 by Jim Walters (vocals, guitar), Alex Totino (guitar, vocals), Phil Leopold von Trapp (bass, vocals), and Lyle Hysen (drums). Totino and Hysen were previously in the New York hardcore band The Misguided. Das Damen released their self-titled debut album on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! in 1986. They subsequently signed to SST Records and released Jupiter Eye in 1987, which has been described as "quasi-hardcore that touched on MC5-like garage psychedelia". A third album, Triskaidekaphobe, followed. It featured a guest appearance by ex-MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer.

The notorious No Wave band Red Transistor didn't actually release anything in their short existence—but their posthumous single "Not Bite" / "We're Not Crazy," recorded in 1977 but released by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label in 1990. The single showcases how ahead of their time this chaotic noise punk band was, both in the cutting riffs, repetition, and rants of Rudolph Grey and Von Lmo and their legendarily destructive shows in which little on stage survived.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. Thurston Joseph Moore (born July 25, 1958) is an American musician best known as a member of Sonic Youth. He has also participated in many solo and group collaborations outside Sonic Youth, as well as running the Ecstatic Peace! record label. Thurston Moore's work with Sonic Youth rearranged the parameters of indie rock to an almost incalculable degree, merging experimental art rock tendencies with unconventional guitar tunings for a sound that would influence generations to come. Moore's abstract poetic lyrics and perpetually mysterious aura were core ingredients of Sonic Youth's 30-plus-year run, but also bled into countless side projects and less-frequent solo albums like 1994's sprawling and loose Psychic Hearts. After the group's breakup in 2011, Moore continued with his ambitions, ranging from projects like his band Chelsea Light Moving to noisy collaborations with Merzbow and John Zorn to solo albums like 2020's By the Fire that continued exploring the kind of moody, twisting art rock he'd become an icon of with Sonic Youth. Moore was ranked 34th in Rolling Stone's 2004 edition of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.' In May 2012, Spin published a staff-selected list of the top 100 rock guitarists, and ranked Moore and his Sonic Youth bandmate Lee Ranaldo together at number 1. Lineup: Tapper Zukie, Patti Smith, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, MARS, Public Image Ltd., The Slits, The Raincoats, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Archie Shepp, Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr., Jackson C. Frank, Bush Tetras, Germs, Boredoms, Lou Reed, The Beach Boys, David Bowie, Sparks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Damned, The Mentally Ill, Minor Threat, Black Flag, The Untouchables, Iron Cross, The Faith, Void, Negative Approach, Youth Brigade, S.O.A., Anne Briggs, The Fugs, Jimi Hendrix
On today's episode I talk to musician Thurston Moore. Originally from Coral Gables, Florida, Thurston eventually ended up in New York in the late-70s, just as a vibrant musical scene was exploding, which included post-punk, new wave, no wave, jazz and numerous other styles. After playing in a few different bands, he met Kim Gordon and they eventually formed Sonic Youth in 1981. Over the next three decades, Sonic Youth released 15 amazing albums and became one of the most well-known indie rock bands. Outside of Sonic Youth, Thurston founded and runs the Ecstatic Peace! record label, has collaborated with everyone from Glenn Branca to Yoko Ono, and started the band Chelsea Light Moving in 2012. In addition to all this, Thurston has recorded a number of albums under his own name, and his latest By the Fire was just released at the end of September as part of the Daydream Library Series. She has contributed to the recordings of Fiery Furnaces, Nate Wooley, MV & EE, Thurston Moore and many many more. As it turns out, Samara and I are also neighbors.Today's talk covers a lot of ground, a lot of which centers around the peculiarities of New York City. It's a good one and I'm happy to share it with you.

The sweat continues to drip from my fingers and on to tasty new platters of wax as Vancouver is pummeled with a heat wave. The show kicked off this week with some serious feminine heat, courtesy of midnight disco-murk goddess Nite Jewel, a new CDR of outtakes by the Magik Markers taken from their recently released 'Balf Quarry' LP, the new tightly wound Little Claw on Ecstatic Peace, and a new re-issue from Grouper. No wonder my palms were so sweaty in the booth this week.New 10"er by Nerve City has been receiving many hits at home, and I couldn't be more excited for a full length LP from them due in the coming months from local label Sweet Rot. Stay tuned for more on them...Managed to snake a copy of the limited to 200 cassette (sold only at the Captured Tracks/Woodsist fest that happened a few weeks back in NYC) by the Fresh and Onlys. Wow, can that band ever punp out the tuneful garage kickers. Two 7"s, two cassettes, an LP all in one year? Scratch that...two LPs. New full length of all unreleased material due out on Woodsist sometime in September. Band of the year?Ty Segall continues his onslaught of 2009 with a handful of 7"s, a new full length and a split LP with the UK's Black Time. West Coast tour coming from the one-man wonder. Have to fit that into my schedule somewhere along the lines...Coupla' new-ish numbers popped in the mail from the burgeoning Almost Ready label. The new Pink Noise is worth the peeping, but the best of the batch is the 'World Is Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8', which contains the best Blank Dogs song I've e'er laid ears on (played on this show, thanks to Grimmertown for heppin' me that one), not to mention exclusive tracks by Pink Reason, Times New Viking, Vivian Girls, Sic Alps, and a heap of others. This one won't stick around for too much longer. Finally got to lay my hands on a copy of the Amen Dunes LP, which is slowly making it's way up the ladder of best of '09. A lot of acoustic-based lo-fi downer-pop. It's a mouthful but worth the investigatin'.Moon Duo, which is Ripley the guitarist from Wooden Shjips, continues on down the trail being burned by his mothership. Get a hold of Aquarius Records for this one, as it seems to be disappearing fast. New Blues Control finally made it's way up to Canada, and was it ever worth the wait. 4 tracks of molten psych, submerged and raised up in all the right spots. Not quite as tops as Puff, but a necessary piece of future psych.Squeezed in a nice spotlight on Indiana cassette label El Tule, which just released the Ducktails side-project Parasails. More drifting beach psych from the reigning king. El Tule has also been pumping out some other great cassettes, two of which are highlighted below. Anyone interested in some Parasails action should drop a comment below.Until next week, keep yer records out of the sun.
