In this episode of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we speak with British-born, Chicago-based musician, producer, and all-around man of the times, James Elkington, a household name in Chicago's rich and complex music history. From his early days with the math rock outfit Elevate back in the UK to joining Thrill Jockey's long-running supergroup Brokeback, led by the legendary Douglas McCombs of Tortoise, Elkington has navigated a challenging landscape of hard work, unwavering dedication, and a keen eagerness to learn and explore the endless possibilities found in music's melodic memory bank. With a solo career steeped in radical descents into the poetic psyche, Elkington's atmospheric ability to evoke both the past and present is showcased in release such as "Ever-Roving Eye," "Me Either," and 2025's "Pastel De Nada." Reflecting critical changes in today's music, art, and culture, Elkington discusses the contrast between writing and recording his music versus producing others, generational gestures from one person to another, the Golden Era of 1980s culture, future works, and much more..
Emo ambient? That's just one way to describe the ever-evolving work of boundary-pushing artist Mari Maurice, better known as more eaze. Her prolific output defies the norms of the music world, blending ambient, noise, autotune, and pedal steel with a deeply personal, human touch. In this episode, Mari shares her unique approach to making music that dissolves the lines between pop and what's considered, in inverted commas, „serious“ music. Her collaboration with claire rousay on Never Stop Texting Me beautifully exemplifies this artistic ethos. We talk about the challenges Mari faced in Austin's experimental scene and the creative freedom she‘s discovered since relocating to New York. Immersed in the city‘s rich musical landscape, she's embraced collaboration and opened up new dimensions in her sound, drawing from both minimalist and maximalist influences to reshape her approach to composition.Mari also reflects on the joy of making experimental music more accessible, sharing how a live performance sparked her own musical journey and shaped her ethos as an artist. Along the way, we explore the serendipitous nature of sound creation and the growing acceptance of pop elements in avant-garde music. If you're enjoying the show, please consider subscribing and leaving a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. Berlin-based avant-guitarist Jules Reidy is known for creating elaborate, beautiful textures with their instrument, often in large washes of disorienting sound. As evidenced in several collaborations with previous guest of the show Oren Ambarchi, Reidy's heavily-layered and highly-spiritual work–particularly on their newest release, Ghost/Spirit, which is out soon on Thrill Jockey–is also transfixing, particularly upon close and repeated listens. In this episode, they talk about how compositions by Catherine Lamb, Talk Talk, and Dean Roberts shaped their creative sensibilities. Reidy will perform at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, TN in March of 2025. Join our Patreon to support the show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sometimes you feel like you've know someone forever... well at least since that one time he came to your small town during his "Impossible Truth" tour back in 2013 and played your local coffee shop. I'm talking about our southern brother, William Tyler. A legend among greats, Tyler played with the likes of Silver Jews and Lambchop prior to launching his solo career around 2010. He has crossed paths with the late Jack Rose, rocked with KY legend Bonnie "Prince" Billy and so many wonderful artists over the years. A Tennessee boy born and raised, Tyler grew up with his sister, whom he started the Stone Fox venue with in Nashville back in the day. Eventually signing with Merge Records, Tyler went on to release a large body of work with titles such as "Goes West", "Music From First Cow" and his Thrill Jockey debut entitled "Lost Futures" with Marisa Anderson back in 2021. Eventually relocating to LA for a few years, he has since been back in the south during the Pandemic crisis to reset and figure out his vision for the next chapter. Tyler is true blue and we couldn't be more excited to share this episode with you. Enjoy!

This week's Talkhouse Podcast came together in a fun way, when a new-ish artist referenced the work of a more established band in a song, and the head of a legendary indie label thought they should meet. That sounds complicated, but don't worry I'll explain. Our guests are Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew. Kevin Drew is best known as one of the founders of Broken Social Scene, the influential Canadian band slash collective that's been around for 25 years now. The band has amassed an incredible catalog that broke out with 2002's unstoppable You Forgot It In People but all of its records reward a deep dive—as does the solo work that Drew has also released over the years. Last year he released a moving record about loss—among other things—called Aging, and as you'll hear in this conversation, he hopes to reignite Broken Social Scene for one more run that includes some of the collective's members that have gone on to big careers outside the band, like Leslie Feist and Emily Haines. I personally would love to see it. I imagine the other half of today's conversation, Claire Rousay, would as well. The impetus for this conversation is her song “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background.” In case you're not familiar with the aforementioned Broken Social Scene album, You Forgot It In People, it features a song called “Lover's Spit.” Rousay's song is from her fantastic new album Sentiment, just out on Thrill Jockey Records, on which she leans more into song structure than on past releases, which have been tagged “emo ambient.” Rousay uses found sounds, hazy atmospherics, and Auto-Tune to tell sometimes crushingly depressing stories in a way that somehow turns out gorgeous. Check out “Lover's Spit Plays in the Background” right here. This conversation ended up happening because Thrill Jockey's Bettina Richards reached out to Drew to let him know about the nod on Rousay's song, and the rest is history: As you'll hear, they connected pretty quickly, and they chat about blackout curtains, influential record labels, the death of Kevin's mom, and what Drew dubs Claire's “beautiful, vulnerable, shadowy womb/sleeping bag of a record.” Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:29 - Start of the chat 4:49 - On Claire's unusual introduction to Broken Social Scene's music 9:24 - On music as a lifesaver 13:47 - On the future of Broken Social Scene 17:35 - On being jealous of your peers 21:42 - On blackout curtains 31:27 - On signing to Thrill Jockey 36:46 - On negativity and career expectations Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Claire Rousay and Kevin Drew for chatting. In this chat, we get to meet claire rousay. claire is best known as an ambient composer, crafting soundscapes with keys, found sounds, drone, and other experimental elements. But in this chat, she and I talk quite a bit about her brand new album sentiment, which is out now on Thrill Jockey, which includes much more singer-songwriter style material. Now, it's still a claire rousay record, and we discuss how she tried to keep a hold on her experimental spirit despite having more lyric- and guitar-focused songs than ever before, including her choice to produce all the vocals on the album with a sort of robotic autotune effect. We also talk about inspirations, how emo and folk music impacted her as a music listener and creator, live performance, and more. It's a very candid, down to earth, and occasionally lovably self-deprecating chat with one of our most intriguing voices in current-day experiment pop music, and I think you'll enjoy. Thanks for listening.

It's psychedelic country rock - summery, familiar, and comforting. Laurent Schroeder-Lebec's love of heavy, ground-breaking, earth-shaking music is well established by his band Pelican and their diverse discography over the past 20 years. But somewhere around 2012 LSL began to feel the tug of a different calling; starting a family and supporting that family to the best of his ability, and that included becoming beverage director for Big Star here in Chicago. Certainly Pelican had been experiencing success and was making money as a professional band, one that tours 8 months of the year and can sustain itself when not on the road. But raising a family is a different beast so he made the tough decision to leave Pelican. Shredder Dallas Thomas filled Laurents role heroically for several records until just recently when the band began to reissue their first 3 records on Thrill Jockey with new remasters and in the case of the last reissue, The FIre In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw, they were able to add a new remix in addition to remaster by original engineer Greg Norman, with spectacular results. These reissues sparkle and roar in all the right places and bring these records to the sonic level of later releases. With Laurent firmly back in the band, Pelican have been enjoying their reunification and showing the world they still got that thing that put them on the map in first place: the fire in their throats!
On today's episode, I talk to musician and composer Rob Mazurek. Originally from Jersey City, Rob started playing trumpet and cornet in high school after his family moved to Naperville, Illinois. He first learned the foundations of improvised music while studying jazz theory and practice with David Bloom at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, and then became a mainstay of Chicago jazz in the 1980s. In 1994, Rob formed the Chicago Underground Collective with guitarist Jeff Parker and a cast of revolving players, which in turn birthed Isotope 217, both groups releasing albums on the seminal label Thrill Jockey. In the decades since then, Rob founded the Exploding Star Orchestra, has earned numerous commissions and awards, and in general has created more music and art than a short bio can properly elucidate. Earlier this spring, Rob's most recent work for Exploding Star Orchestra, Lightning Dreamers, was released on International Anthem, and like everything else Rob creates, it's wonderful! Rose City Band - “Chasing Rainbows” from the 2023 album Garden Party on Thrill Jockey. Rose City Band, the brainchild of Ripley Johnson (also of Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo and, with a name like that, was either born to play music or be the keeper of facts that you may, or may not, believe) is due to release their fourth record later this month. Titled Garden Party, the album follows up 2021's Earth Trip and is said to be, “A celebration of summer and all it brings: communal gatherings, the respites offered by nature, and an appreciation for even the simplest beauty, from 12-foot sunflowers to a contorted carrot planted in the spring.” The record's lead single and our Song of the Day does not dispute that claim. “Chasing Rainbows,” by name alone, suggests the nostalgic innocence of childhood when one's summer days might consist of chasing things one cannot capture but deeply believe they can. Led by a rollicking pedal steel by Barry Walker, the song actually tells a story not of childhood but on the road on tour, which can feel like a certain kind of childhood in that your days are filled with car rides and playing music. ”Tour ‘round the world and back,” sings Johnson. “Throw it out and you blaze a path /Wanderin' a dream all our own.” Rose City Band will be chasing rainbows all the way to Seattle on Friday, May 5th to play the Tractor Tavern. Read Martin Douglas' Throwaway Style piece on Rose City Band and watch Ripley Johnson front a Wooden Shjips KEXP in-studio performance from all the way back in 2013 at the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is fitting that Bruce Adams's new book, the sardonically-titled You're with Stupid: kranky, Chicago and the Reinvention of Indie Music, begins at Jim's Grill off Irving Park Road in the Ravenswood neighborhood on the North Side: It was the first place I remember seeing a promotional poster for this new band, The Smashing Pumpkins, who were regular customers of Bill Choi's Korean-inspired restaurant, when they were first starting out.But let's back up a few years, to set the scene of what was to come. After attending college at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, in the mid-1980s, Adams worked at a record shop and wrote for the fanzine Your Flesh. He caught the indie rock bug, as it were, inspired by the then burgeoning independent music industry that had grown out of labels like Dischord in Washington, DC, Sub Pop in Seattle, and Touch & Go in Chicago, who presented a more artist-friendly path for bands to make a living selling records, CDs and cassettesAdams found his way to Chicago, where, by the mid-1990s, there was a golden age of independent businesses thriving in unison: records labels (Drag City, Thrill Jockey, Atavistic, Bloodshot, Carrot Top), distributors (Ajax, Cargo, Southern), records shops (Reckless, Dusty Groove, Wax Trax, The Quaker Goes Deaf), underground press (the Chicago Reader and New City, but also Lumpen and Stop Smiling), and venues (Cabaret Metro, Lounge Ax, the Empty Bottle, and Double Door). As Adams documents, it was a near-perfect eco-system for creativity and experimentation in a pre-digital age. You're with Stupid is both a cultural history of the Chicago music world at that time, as told through the record labels and distributors that Adams worked for but also a how-to roadmap to founding a DIY operation. This is my conversation with Bruce Adams about his book and those times.Reading by Bruce AdamsMusic by Labradford

WASTOIDS With is back with Trevor Shelley de Brauw, guitarist of Chicago art metal band Pelican, Chord, and RLYR, who just released a new self-titled record on Gilead Media, and it blends thrash elements with shoegaze textures, drones, and a sense of triumphant melodicism. When de Brauw isn't playing music, he serves as the “emo ambassador” to Chicago's Numero Group label and works with the publicity firm Biz 3. He joined us to discuss it all–the new RLYR, the music of prog rockers Yes, the origins of “post rock,” and Pelican's new partnership with Thrill Jockey, which will reissue the band's first three albums, 2005's The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw, 2003's Australasia and 2007's City of Echoes. Do you have any prog rock opinions you wanna share? All you have to do is call 1-877-WASTOIDS to get in touch, and we'll play your message on a future episode.
The long-running electronic duo Matmos have just released a gorgeous new LP, Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer. Whereas their previous album, 2020's The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, saw the couple collaging contributions from 99 friends recorded at 99 bpm, their latest is dedicated to the work of just one person: Polish polymath Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019). In this episode, we discuss how their reputation for conceptualism has often served to obscure the formal characteristics of their work. Can an object be a concept? Is “washing machine” or “plastic” a concept? With their signature blend of serious humor, the pair reflect on touring with a washing machine, the practicalities of licensing music, and the complexities of working with Schaeffer's archive. Interview recorded between Baltimore and Montreal, April 2022 Produced and mixed in New York, May 2022 TRACKLIST ARTIST – “TITLE” (ALBUM, LABEL, YEAR) Matmos - “Anti-Antiphon(Absolute Decomposition) / Anty-Antyfona (Dekonstrukcja_na_całego)” [excerpt] (Regards / Ukłony dla Bogusław Schaeffer, Thrill Jockey, 2022) Matmos intro collage + Barbarella Matmos clip (1968) Matmos - “Anti-Antiphon” [excerpt] (Regards, Thrill Jockey, 2022) Matmos - “A DOUGHNUT IN THE SKY” (The Consuming Flame: Open Exercises in Group Form, Thrill Jockey, 2020) Matmos - “Flight to Sodom / Lot do Salo” (Regards Thrill Jockey, 2022) Song that my Whirlpool stackable washing machine plays Matmos - [opening excerpt] (Ultimate Care II, Thrill Jockey, 2016) Matmos – “Always Three Words” (quasi-objects, vague terrain, 1998) Matmos - “Memento Mori” (A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure, Matador, 2001) Matmos clip from Top Gear: Series 5, Episode 9, Ariel Atom 46:09 – 46:40 (2004) Matmos – “Plastic Minor” (Matmos, Vague Terrain, 1997) Matmos – “You (Rrose Mix)” (The Ganzfeld EP, Thrill Jockey, 2012) Matmos - “Cobra Wages Shuffle / Off! Trevor Shelley de Brauw took 26 months to get Covid and waited even longer to release his new RLYR record (Gilead Media), the Pelican guitarists side project and secret hook up. The new self-titled record, their 3rd, is an orchestrated love letter to guitar rock riffs, post hardcore surges and ambient waves. Pelican is also busy as they face a Euro tour starting late May in support of the reissues of their first three records with rarities included on Thrill Jockey, and now welcome home original guitarist Laurent LeBec after a long successful tenure with Dallas Thomas of Swan King.
Gavin McCarthy is a drummer and songwriter from Boston, MA. He's written, recorded and toured with a multitude of bands and projects over the last two decades, with his main efforts focussed on E and Karate. After a long period of chasing down the masters, Karate is re-releasing their entire catalog with the Numero Group. In this episode Gavin catches us up on his life during the involuntary break, gives us the low down on the Boston venue scene and tells us how taking a break from music changed his self-identity. He also gives us his thoughts on reunion tours, why he's looking forward to this summers Karate dates and why the concept of a live record is odd. Joe and Gavin swop a couple stories that celebrate the beauty and chaos of touring in Italy and we hear a couple Karate tunes. https://www.gavinmccarthy.com/https://karateallston.bandcamp.com/https://numerogroup.com/search?q=Karate&options%5Bprefix%5D=lastEpisode sponsored by Izotope. We go in hard this week, with the consistently dancefloor filling Otim Alpha terrorising us with his high BPM electro Acholi sounds. There are let-ups sprinkled across the pod, with the exquisite new Elena Setien record on Thrill Jockey, and spiritual jazz from Irreversible Entanglements. Mostly though, we're going uptempo, with a cracker from Rose Bonica, Gorge sounds from Adam Ondo Martenot, and Niger hip hop from Mamaki Boys, proving massive highlights on the pod. Tracklisting Otim Alpha – Lobo Olanya (Nyege Nyege Tapes, Uganda) Elena Setien – Situation (Thrill Jockey Records, USA) Rose Bonica – Heart in my Throat (Roses Are Red, South Africa) Irreversible Entanglements – Open the Gates (International Anthem, USA) Galen Tipton – Kick and Scream and Fight Like Hell (self-release, USA) Main Dice – Family Planning (Marfa Lights, Australia) Adam Ondo Martenot – The Eye of Ondo (Gorge. In, Japan) Mamaki Boys – Takkai (Sahel Sounds, USA) Dai San – Nite Sprite (GAMM, UK) Mildred Maude – Trevena (Sonic Cathedral, UK) Produced and edited by Nick McCorriston
As broadcast August 26, 2021 with a boatload of room to stretch the legs on the podcast ride. Tonight we paid tribute to Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe" to start off, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts on this date in 1967 for a four week ride at the top. More importantly, we finished by double dipping with The Rolling Stones in tribute to drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away earlier this week. The man was not the flashiest guy on the beat by any stretch nor the most technical, but he was always in the pocket to a tee and did what was required for one of the greatest bands of all time in his own way. We also release our latest playlist in August's rendition of The Damyang Drop, so we covered the funkier & more soulful joints in part 1 & 2 for our Sampled funk & soul first hour.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Clydie King – Ode to Billie JoeBob & Fred – I'll Be On My WayJungle – Can't Stop The StarsPatti Jo – Make Me Believe In YouRoxy Music – Love Is The Drug (Todd Terje edit)Part II (33:16)Moondog feat Rob Burger – Bird's LamentCamille Yarbrough – Take Yo PraiseHailu Mergia & The Walias – Endegena El Michels Affair – Fazed OutTortoise – A Simple Way To Go Faster Than Light That Does Not WorkWeather Report – River People (Live)Los Porcos – Porc Noise Complaint Part III (69:24)Rolling Stones – Honky Tonk WomenParquet Courts – Walking at a Downtown PaceSame Fender – AyeThe Bronx – Mexican SummerBoston Manor – Carbon MonoDave Hause – Surfboard Part IV (100:19)Royal Blood – Sad But TrueDeviates – WastedThe Copyrights – HalosLaura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers – Apocalypse Now (& Later)Roger Taylor – We're All Just Trying to Get By ft KT TunstallRolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

Recently when Luke and John were in Krakow for Unsound, NTS radio kindly invited them to present their show The Quietus Hour live from the festival. When asked who, among all of the musicians, DJs and producers appearing that week, they would like to interview for the show, Matmos were top of their wish list. Drew Daniel and MC Schmidt are already responsible for one of tQ's favourite albums of the year in the shape of Ultimate Care II, which came out on Thrill Jockey and is based on the cycle of a washing machine using just samples from their own appliance. But the couple were in Krakow to perform three 'episodes' from Robert Ashley's "opera for TV", Perfect Lives, which was a clear highlight of the week, in a festival packed to the brim with intelligent and exciting programming. Martin and Drew came in to talk about this fascinating show and kindly tolerated Luke and John's pork and caffeine-addled gibbering and sub-par line of questioning... and they also brought in a fine selection of musical oddities for your sonic delectation.
On today's show, I talk to John Colpitts AKA Kid Millions of the bands Oneida and Man Forever. John started drumming in high school and moved to New York in the late-90s to get into music more seriously. After working in music adjacent jobs like being the booker for The Knitting Factory and playing in a jazz trio, John and some friends eventually formed Oneida. In the last 16 years, Oneida's released a dozen albums and toured all over the world. Most recently, John put out an album of minimalist percussion under the name Man Forever. It's on Thrill Jockey, and it's really awesome!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!
