The interview with today's guest, Laura Shamas (Chickasaw Nation) on her world premiere play Four Women in Red happened several days before the Los Angeles Fires (i.e., Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Kenneth Fire, and the Hurst Fire). The play was originally scheduled to premiere on January 17th, 2025, at the Victory Theatre Center in Burbank, California where performances were supposed to continue through February 23. As of January 11th, 2025, the Victory Theater Center announced that “With members of the cast, creative team and audience impacted by the wildfires, The Victory Theatre Center has canceled the previously announced January 17 opening of Four Women in Red, a new play by Laura Shamas about the current crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. A revised performance schedule will be announced at a later date.” Four Women in Red is about four resilient Native American women searching for missing friends and relatives in the face of apathetic sheriffs and dwindling clues. Touching on variety if critically important issues such as MMIW, settler colonial violence, and this moving new play celebrates the power of community as the women seek answers against all odds. While the interview references the January and February theater dates for the play, American Indian Airwaves is releasing the program because the fires are profoundly impacting all living relations (human and non-human), including Indigenous peoples involved with Four Women in Red and Indigenous throughout the region. Send us a textHappy New Year! It's amazing how things come full circle. After having Steven Dietz' wife, Allison Gregory, on last episode, we were privileged enough to have Laura Annawyn Shamas on Playwright's Spotlight, who happened to work them both in Minneapolis at The Playwright's Center. In this episode, Laura and I discuss a playwright's involvement in a piece, tech and costume "covers" (a term I just learned), "fourth" grade playwriting, inspirations, what makes a great director, and structure and staging.  We also delve into approaching character and the symbology of names,  virtual theatre vs live performance, surprising and caring about the audience, archetypes and character flaws, playing with structure, and developing and trusting a community of playwrights. As always, it's an insightful episode that Laura shares her history and experience in the craft of playwriting. It's a wonderful conversation to motivate and inspire playwrights of every level to get to work. I hope you enjoy this episode of Playwright's Spotlight and, as always... keep writing.Laura Annawyn Shamas (Playwright) is a 2023 winner of the Los Angeles New Play Project Award. Shamas has written over 40 plays, including Circular (published in 2024 by Next Stage Press), Portrait of a Nude, Lady-Like, Chasing Honey, The Other Shakespeare, Talking Leaves (winner, Garrard Best Play Award at Five Civilized Tribes Museum), and Amelia Lives (winner, Fringe First Award at Edinburgh Festival Fringe). Her short play, Seeds, won the Von Marie Atchley Award for Excellence in Playwriting from Native Voices. In Shakespeare's Sisters: Four Women Who Wrote the Renaissance (Knopf, 2024) by Dr. Ramie Targoff, discover the lives and work of four ambitious Renaissance women who, against all odds, made themselves heard-and read-in the time of Shakespeare In an innovative and engaging narrative of everyday life in Shakespeare's England, Dr. Targoff carries us from the sumptuous coronation of Queen Elizabeth in the mid-16th century into the private lives of four women writers working at a time when women were legally the property of men. Some readers may have heard of Mary Sidney, accomplished poet and sister of the famous Sir Philip Sidney, but few will have heard of Aemilia Lanyer, the first woman in the 17th century to publish a book of original poetry, which offered a feminist take on the crucifixion, or Elizabeth Cary, who published the first original play by a woman, about the plight of the Jewish princess Mariam. Then there was Anne Clifford, a lifelong diarist, who fought for decades against a patriarchy that tried to rob her of her land in one of England's most infamous inheritance battles. These women had husbands and children to care for and little support for their art, yet against all odds they defined themselves as writers, finding rooms of their own where doors had been shut for centuries. Dr. Targoff flings them open to uncover the treasures left by these extraordinary women; in the process, she helps us see the Renaissance in a fresh light, creating a richer understanding of history and offering a much-needed female perspective on life in Shakespeare's day. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

Reinventing Healthcare, Four Women at a Time. In this powerful episode, I chat with Amy Louis-Bayliss, MD MSCP, and Lindsay Stollery Jephcott, two of four visionary women—three doctors and an entrepreneur—who unite to transform women's healthcare. Rather than rushing to build a business, they began by aligning their values and purpose, grounding their venture in a commitment to make a real impact. Through Lume Women + Health, they tackle a crucial, often overlooked need: personalized healthcare for women. They address menopause, sexual health, and overall wellness with a unique, preventive approach. At the same time, the episode examines the broader healthcare system's challenges and the toll on patients and front-line workers alike. It explores the idea that a fusion of private-sector innovation and a shared vision for accessible care could bring scalable, lasting change. This conversation offers an inspiring blend of entrepreneurial grit, health advocacy, and lessons in building purpose-driven partnerships. And their approach could change healthcare for the better across our country.   To learn more about Lume Women + Health: https://lumewomenshealth.com

Today we're kicking off our coverage of an innovative women's business accelerator program that's transforming lives and businesses in the region. We're sitting down with the four remarkable women behind this initiative: Arin Fugate, who transformed a local networking group into a thriving community; Lisa Manyon, a global marketing strategist and content expert; Angelica Owens, a business strategist specializing in delegation and authentic sales; and Lany Sullivan, a systems and growth expert who helps tie it all together. What started as a casual monthly meetup has exploded into a 2,000-member strong community of women supporting women, and now they've launched an intensive business accelerator program called, "The Accelerator." Over the coming months, we'll follow the journey of their first cohort of 16 participants, documenting their transformations, challenges, and successes. This is more than just business education – it's about breaking down barriers, challenging money mindsets, and creating a sustainable model for women's economic empowerment that starts at the local level but has global implications. Stay with us as we begin this journey, starting with our conversation with the four visionary women who brought The Accelerator to life. Learn more about the Elevated Networking Society here.

Having solicited clients for her PR business there, Sam jumps the bones of the 'right' man, but when his all-too-influential wife walks in on them, her vital social acceptability is endangered. Charlotte meets hunky young widower Ned and enjoys helping him overcome his grieving in bed, until she discovers she isn't the only one. Miranda's pride when she buys her first apartment is short-lived, as the paperwork seems to stigmatize her "single woman" status. This is a story of four composers whose careers, lives and loves as women working in 20th century Britain have since been largely forgotten. Dr Leah Broad's 2023 debut Quartet: How Four Women Changed the Musical World (Faber & Faber, 2023), reveals the life and music of some of Britain's most exciting 20th-century composers. A musicologist who gravitates towards figures at the margins of Western Art Music, the four subjects of Broad's biography (Ethel Smyth, Rebecca Clarke, Doreen Carwithen and Dorothy Howell) experience success, even fame, before being pushed to the periphery. They compose operas, film music, songs and sonatas, encounter the Second Viennese School and fashion early freelance instrumental careers. Broad's narrative begins in 1858 with the birth of Ethel Smyth. She charts two world wars, the development of post-war British institutions such as the BBC and the Arts Council of Great Britain, and brings us all the way to Doreen Carwithen's death in 2003. In this time, the four composers take on the diverse politics of suffragette militancy, 60's American liberalism and a staunch British-Catholic conservatism. Through grouping such diverse personalities, Broad refuses the tendency to isolate women as historical anomalies or singular figures. Her fluent prose expertly interweaves their lives, whilst revealing a true diversity of music, thought and experience. Joseph Edwards is a writer and violinist based in London. In West Africa, women are on the cutting edge of musical and cultural progress. This program looks at four singer/composers with roots in tradition and unique ideas about how to keep them current in the fast-changing milieu of today's African music. Mali's Fatoumata Diawara keeps her focus on messages, mixing traditional sounds and rock idioms to reach young audiences. Senegal's Aida Samb is finding new avenues for that country's trademark mbalax sound, including collaborations with Afrobeats stars like Wizkid. Elida Almeida of Cape Verde has emerged as a freewheeling composer, able to draw on whatever influences she likes, and it's working for fans of all generations. And Benin's Angelique Kidjo, never one to sit back on her many successes, has covered Talking Heads' 1980 album Remain in Light, in its entirety, re-Africanizing a rock classic for a new time. We'll speak with all four artists, and hear their latest music. Produced by Banning Eyre
