In this week's episode Isabella is joined by her childhood friend Joshie G. They sit down over a FaceTime catchup and talk about something they both had in common growing up - feeling like they were in their 'siblings shadow'. They talk about the highs and lows and how they dealt with it, to how they both finally felt like they broke free of it. It's a really interesting chat that most siblings can probably relate to! Pocha Crew is back with another HOT episode that will make you whistle like a missile. Eugene Choi recommendations @ 1:25 plus Jenny and Brandon did their homework and cover Fight My Way and Arthdal Chronicles. This week we review the long awaited Siwon episode of SF8 (Ep: 7) @ 15:23, Flower of Evil Finale (Ep: 16) @ 25:36, and we continue Record of Youth (Ep: 5-6) @ 35:57. Episode 7 of SF8 did NOT live up to its hype but still a pretty cute episode. On that topic we still think episode 15 of FoE should have been the finale. Nevertheless, FoE has officially secured spot number 5 in our 2020 Playlist! 3/4ths of the Pocha Crew is LOVING Record of Youth though so stay tuned for that ranking to come... it may break the top 5 as well which means one show must go down. Next week the Pocha Crew will be reviewing the finale of SF8 episode 8, Record of Youth episodes 7-8, and we will be starting the new drama School Nurse Files 1-3!

Judy and Linda are finally starting a new drama! We are loving episodes 1-2 of "Because This Is My First Life" (이번 생은 처음이라), a TVN Korean drama starring Jung SoMin and Lee MinKi. Judy and Linda are deeply moved by the drama's realistic portrayal of Korea's patriarchal society. SMASH THE SYSTEM!!! Ahem. Judy wants to know what lipstick brand Sooji (Esom) is using. How is that not a sponsorship moment? Linda wonders if all married Korean women have a secret stash of money. Digressions: 20:13 - Judy coins "Sheldonesque" and Linda still watches "The Big Bang Theory" 32:19 - Girl name vs. Boy name in Korean 57:45 - Pressure to get ahead in Korea ("Hell-Joseon") Some Korean terms: 빙구: [bing-goo] a name typically given to a village idiot character. 누나: [noo-na] way for a male to address an older sister. 월세: [wol-seh] monthly rent system, which is what we're used to in Western countries. 전세: [jeon-seh] rent is paid by giving the landlord a large deposit, which they can then invest or put into a bank account to earn money; may or may not have monthly rent. 썸: [sseom] flirting without commitment. 모태솔로: [mo-teh-sol-lo] used to describe someone who has never dated. 고시원: [go-si-won] dormitory-style living space; previously used by people studying for professional exams but nowadays used by young single professionals or the elderly. 청춘드라마: [cheong-choon-deu-ra-ma] youth drama; examples would be "Fight My Way" and "Age of Youth". Thanks again to Bill, who recommended this drama to us! Join us in smashing the system! Judy and Linda slog through episodes 15 and 16 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy and Linda get whiplash from the sudden change in the personalities of stalker dude, Jooman's mom and Hyeran. Linda wonders how the Crazy Fantastic Four came to live at the Namil villa, which just happens to be owned by The Red Lady (Jin HeeKyung), aka Aera's mom. Judy is annoyed that Dongman (Park SeoJoon) and Aera (Kim JiWon) are so cool about their breakup, since apparently they loved each other so much. Some Korean terms: 속시원하다: [sok-shi-won-ha-da] literally "My insides are cool"; expression of "I am so relieved" (because an annoyance has now been resolved). 왕따: [wang-dda] bullied; isolated. 고등어: [go-deung-uh] mackerel. 찜: [jjim] dish that's steamed in a sauce or marinade. 공손하게: [gong-son-ha-geh] politely. Next week's episode is a "Signal" special! If you haven't already watched the series, we strongly recommend doing so. It'll be full of spoilers, so don't say we didn't warn you! Did you feel anything when Aera (Kim JiWon) broke up with Dongman (Park SeoJoon)? How would you fix the mediocre ending problems that most Korean dramas have? Judy and Linda are pretty disappointed with episodes 13 and 14 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. The penultimate week of most Korean dramas seem to suffer from the production staff scrambling to kill time with pointless garbage. Yes, we reviewed the penultimate episodes of all the dramas we've talked about in this podcast to confirm this. "Fight My Way" decided to spend two whole episodes doing nothing but set up red herrings that anyone could see from a mile away. Judy and Linda find it weird that Dongman (Park SeoJoon) would compliment Aera (Kim JiWon) by telling her that she smells like seaweed soup. Linda wonders what it actually means to be a "또라이" (translated in Viki as "psycho"). 32:00 – We love soondae and want Korean restaurants that have an efficient delivery system like in Korea. 50:42 – Pun time! Some Korean terms: 양아치: [yang-ah-chi] thug; apparently it's a shortened version of "동냥아치" [dong-nyang-ah-chi] referring to groups of orphans begging for food after the Korean war. 또라이: [ddo-ra-ee] slang term to refer to person who acts against social norms despite not having any mental/physical disabilities. 오두막: [oh-doo-mak] raised open gazebo near farming fields. 배: [beh] homonym for pear and stomach. 교포: [gyo-po] person of Korean ancestry who doesn't live in Korea. 막걸리: [mak-gul-li] Korean rice wine. 부적: [boo-juk] talisman used in Korean shamanism. Do you ever watch Korean dramas and ache to order in some food? What's your favourite Korean food? Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook and Twitter (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com). A-side, Baby, A-side! We’re talking some good news, some bad news, some KCon news, and then talking about some dramas we’re watching: Fight My Way, Fluttering India, 2Moons, and 10 Miles of Peach Blossoms. To read the complete show notes, please visit the official website.
Judy and Linda laugh and cry at episodes 11 and 12 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Linda tries not to give away any spoilers and spends the whole time being shifty-eyed whenever Judy tries to speculate. Judy ponders if Yejin (Pyo YeJin) is some sort of innocent-faced mastermind. Linda cried over Dongman's dad (Song ByungHo) while Judy squirreled away all of Seolhee's (Song HaYoon) best lines to use when she goes on a righteous rampage. 0:11:10 - Do you like ddeok (Korean rice cake)? 0:45:56 - Who has a bra drawer? 1:15:32 - Pun time! Some Korean terms: 떡: [ddeok] sticky rice cake; can be sweet or savoury depending on how you make it. 팥빙수: [pat-bing-soo] shaved ice with red bean and other toppings; there are many different toppings and flavours nowadays. 무지개떡: [moo-ji-geh-ddeok] rainbow rice cake. 꿀떡: [ggool-ddeok] honey rice cake. 인절미: [in-jul-mi] rice cake with sweet bean powder 송편: [song-pyun] rice cake formed into dumpling shape with variety of sweet filling. 시집 못간다: [si-jip-mot-gan-da] older way of saying "You won't be able to get married" in reference to a woman. For a man, it would be "장가 못간다" [jang-ga-mot-gan-da]. 까칠하다: [gga-chil-ha-da] cranky; easily annoyed. 흙수저: [heuk-soo-juh] "dirt spoon", as compared to being a "silver spoon". 도라지즙: [do-ra-ji-jeup] platycodon; in Korea, roots are usually made into side dishes. 수박: [soo-bak] watermelon. If you have any awesome lines that you remember from a Korean drama, we'd love to hear from you! Judy and Linda are still indignant as they talk about episodes 9 and 10 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy tries to convince Linda to write her own Korean history book for English speakers. Judy and Linda are still really upset that Aera (Kim JiWon) can't seem to catch a break due to Hyeran's (Lee Elijah) connivance. Judy is starry-eyed whenever Dongman (Park SeoJoon) comes up while Linda is itching to tear Jooman (Ahn JaeHong) apart. 0:02:42 - We found a taekwondo expert to analyze Dongman's signature move. 0:05:56 - Listener Q&A - How to date a historical drama set in Joseon dynasty, specifically "My Sassy Girl" (2017). 0:24:11 - Girl groups coming back this summer 0:45:49 - Linda describes her conception dream. Judy sadly does not have one. 0:53:03 - Pun time! 1:13:50 - Judy and Linda invite trouble by dissing FinKL and other first gen idol groups. Some Korean terms: 가체: [ga-che] elaborate wigs worn by noblewomen and gisaeng. 자기야: [ja-ghi-ya] term for addressing one's significant other; "honey", "sweetie" or similar. 사투리: [sa-too-ri] regional accent. 촌놈: [chon-nom] informal way of referring to a man from countryside. 엿: [yeot] Korean traditional sticky candy made with grains. 붙다: [boot-da] to stick to. 먹방: [muk-bang] online broadcast in which a host eats large quantities of food. 파도: [pa-do] wave. 허준: [huh-joon] Korean doctor from late 16th to early 17th century. 수요일: [soo-yo-il] Wednesday. 술: [sool] alcohol. 썸을 타다: [ssum-eul-ta-da] to flirt heavily without commitment. Are we ready for some drama? Of the Kdrama — and actually of the Kpop news variety? We’re talking dramas like Fight My Way (which Cherry Cordial has rightly picked up), questions brought up by Lookout, and waiting eagerly for Bon Voyage 2. We also talk about the troubling power of Kpop fans, with the recent Seo Taiji and Super Junior news. To read the complete show notes, please visit the official website.
This week is full of digressions as Judy and Linda talk about episodes 7 and 8 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Linda googles the cost of hospital rooms in Ontario, while Naver fails to give Judy the answer about corresponding rooms in Korea. Judy and Linda cast maledictions at characters who are absolute garbage people. Maybe if people focused on improving themselves instead of scheming to bring down others, they would be in a much better place. 0:17:40 - Judy and Linda try to name as many announcers/newscasters as they can. 0:54:53 - Pun time #1. Judy and Linda have many questions about episodes 5 and 6 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy and Linda talk about the treatment of servicepeople in Korea and how Aera's (Kim JiWon) situation is sadly not uncommon. Linda wants to know what entails a "full course date" and Judy wants to know what the big deal is about reversing one's car with one hand. And also, puppy face vs. kitten face? Some Korean terms: 떠보기: [dduh-bo-gi] when one knows the truth, but ask leading questions to catch someone in a lie. 청계천: [chung-gye-chun] popular tourist attraction in Seoul; the river/creek has paved walkways on either side with decorations, lights and fountains. 로망: [ro-mang] taken from French word, "roman", which means "novel"; used to describe "dream" or "something to which you aspire". 괴물: [gwe-mool] monster. 물: [mool] water. 끔찍하다: [ggeum-jjik-ha-da] to be horrifying. 돌: [dol] first birthday. 부담스럽다: [boo-dam-seu-rup-da] to be burdensome. 설설기다: [sul-sul-gi-da] to grovel. 차가 와서: [cha-ga-wa-suh] "because cars came". 차가워서: [cha-ga-wuh-suh] "because it's cold". This week, Judy and Linda are drawn in by the slow unraveling of personal histories in episode 3-4 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy and Linda are amused by the prominent showcasing of Dongman's (Park SeoJoon) abs. They also consider alternate careers as gift wrappers in Korea, since one can charge $20 for a simple box wrapped with ribbon? Linda wants to know why Koreans idealize small feet in women. Judy wants to know why Aera keeps agreeing to meet Moobin (Choi WooShik) if she can't help but lie to his face all the time. Linda and Judy just love the taste of comeuppance that Dongman dishes out to Taksoo (Kim GunWoo). Some Korean terms: 잘나가는: [jal-na-ga-neun] popular. 족발집: [jok-bal-jip] "jok-bal" is pig's feet boiled in broth and "jip" is house; therefore a casual restaurant that specializes in pig's feet. Audio Credits: G-Dragon: "INTRO. 권지용 Middle Fingers-Up" Judy tried to find the clip of Park HyungSik having his muscles felt up by a fan, but didn't have any success. If you know which clip Linda is talking about, please send it and any questions, comments or suggestions to us on Facebook and Twitter (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com). This week, Judy and Linda are absolutely delighted by episode 2 of "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이), starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. Judy and Linda talk about the portrayal of violence in pop culture, and why the confrontation between Aera (Kim JiWon) and the asshats is more disturbing than the fights in action films. Linda finds the characters and their struggles more relatable than in other dramas. Judy is a strong believer in sarcastic "aegyo". To see professionals sing a traditional Korean song, click here to watch a performance of "새타령" (Song of Birds). Apparently, it's from Judy's home province! If you want to hear the original singer, Lee YoungHyeon, sing "체념" (Resignation) live, click here! Some Korean terms: 재수없는 애: [je-soo-up-neun-ae] literally "person who is unlucky (for other people"; more accurately "annoying person". 체념: [che-nyum] resignation. 창: [chang] Korean term for "song" borrowed from Chinese; Judy refers to traditional Korean singing as "창", but the correct term is "판소리" [pan-so-ri]. 흑기사: [heuk-ghi-sa] "black knight"; guy who drinks the alcohol for a girl in a drinking game. Audio Credits: Frasier season 3, episode 2 “Shrink Rap” Are you guys also enjoying "Fight My Way"? Judy and Linda talk about six different dramas this week! 0:02:16 - Linda has been watching "Signal" (시그널), which is a 2016 TVN drama, starring Lee JeHoon, Kim HyeSoo and Cho JinWoong. Judy hasn't started yet, but is very intrigued by the premise and Linda's recommendation. 0:09:00 - Judy has been watching "Chief Kim" (김과장), which is a KBS2 drama from early 2017. It stars Nam GoongMin, Nam SangMi and Lee JunHo. 0:14:37 - Linda and Judy were not very impressed by "Ruler: Master of the Mask" (군주: 가면의 주인), an MBC drama, starring Yoo SeungHo and Kim SoHyun. Recently, some dramas have been airing two half-hour episodes per day. Linda fell asleep during the first episode. Judy managed to power through the second episode, but only because she fell down a Wikipedia hole. 0:36:13 - "Suspicious Partner" (수상한 파트너) is an SBS drama, starring Ji ChangWook and Nam JiHyun. Linda enjoyed this drama, while Judy was initially extremely annoyed with the female lead. 0:47:33 - Linda predicted that Judy would love "Fight My Way" (쌈 마이웨이). This is a KBS2 drama, starring Park SeoJoon, Kim JiWon, Ahn JaeHong and Song HaYoon. She was right, of course. 1:05:23 - Linda and Judy are way harsh on "Seven Days Queen" (7일의 왕비), another KBS2 drama, starring Park MinYoung, Yeon WooJin and Lee DongGun. We understand that historical dramas sometimes have to craft fictional elements to make the story work. However, recent dramas are either trying to cram nonsensical elements ("Ruler: Master of the Mask", "Saimdang: Light's Diary") or ignoring key characteristics of a prominent figure, like in this drama. 1:30:27 - There is a digression about YeonSanGun (연산군), who is played by Lee DongGun in "Seven Days Queen". Click here to read the Wikipedia entry about him. 1:34:10 - There is another digression about Crown Prince Sado (사도세자), who is played by Yoo SeungHo in "Ruler: Master of the Mask". Click here to read with Wikipedia entry about him. Some Korean terms: 기러기아빠: [ghi-ruh-ghi-ah-ppa] "goose" + "dad"; term to describe a father, who supports his wife and children living overseas. 진달래: [jin-dal-le] azalea. 검사: [gum-sa] prosecutor. 대리: [deh-ri] assistant manager. 독: [dok] poison, sounds like "dog"; In case you missed it when Robert sent his pun at 1:16:00, Bori is Judy's dog. Get it? GET IT?!?!?! 털털하다: [tul-tul-ha-da] easygoing. Audio Credits: Crush - "Beautiful" Bell Biv Devoe – “Poison” We've decided to continue watching "Fight My Way". That was an easy decision! Next Wednesday, we're releasing episode 39 about episode 2 and on Thursday, we'll be talking about episodes 3 and 4. Judy and Linda are classy this week as they discuss the final two episodes of "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon" (힘쎈여자 도봉순), starring Park BoYoung, Park HyungSik and JiSoo. Judy is jealous that Bongsoon (Park BoYoung) can cry so much without getting snotty. Linda develops an interesting backstory for the kidnapper that could turn the whole drama on its head. Minhyuk (Park HyungSik) is even more "inspired" than in previous episodes, which amuses Judy and Linda to no end. Korean term: 양은냄비: [yang-eun-nem-bi] nickel-silver pot. Our next episode is going to be a "First Impressions" episode, where we talk about "Signal", "Chief Kim", "Fight My Way", "Suspicious Partner", "Ruler: Master of the Mask" and "Seven Days Queen".
