In this episode of WealthTalk, Christian Rodwell is joined by Omar Aswat, Chartered Tax Adviser and founder of ASWATAX, to unpack the urgent changes coming to Business Property Relief (BPR) in April 2026 and what they mean for business owners and property investors. Omar explains how the new BPR limits could expose significant business value to inheritance tax, highlights the practical steps you should be taking now, and delves into strategies like family investment companies, trusts, and smart incorporation. The discussion also covers the impact of Section 24 on landlords, practical tax-saving tips for business owners, and succession planning tools for those looking to future-proof their wealth. Whether you're scaling a business, building a property portfolio, or planning your exit, this episode is packed with actionable insights to help you stay ahead of the curve.Key TakeawaysMajor Change to Business Property Relief (BPR) in 2026From April 6, 2026, BPR will only exempt £1 million of value per trading company/group from inheritance tax (IHT); any value above will be taxed at 20%.Urgent need for business owners to review structures and plan ahead.Who Is Affected?Owners of trading companies/groups with assets above £1 million.Property investment companies already subject to IHT—this rule change doesn't benefit or worsen their position.Mitigation & Planning StrategiesFamily investment companies (FICs)Growth and freezer sharesDiscretionary trustsGifting, sale acceleration, and succession planningCase-by-case: bespoke advice is essentialSection 24 & Incorporation for Property InvestorsSection 24 restricts mortgage interest relief for personally held property; incorporation can offer tax savings but must be weighed against capital gains and stamp duty costs.Comparative calculations are vital before transferring property into a company.Inheritance Tax Allowances Explained£325,000 nil-rate band per person, plus £175,000 residence nil-rate band (if passing main home to direct descendants).Married couples can combine for up to £1 million, but the rules are technical and not inflation-linked.Family Investment Companies (FICs)FICs provide flexibility in dividend planning, control, and succession. Can be set up new or by converting existing companies; often used in combination with trusts for asset protection.Smart Moves for Business OwnersAlphabet shares for flexible dividend planning.Utilise directors' loan accounts, charge rent for company premises owned personally, and salary sacrifice schemes.SSAS pensions remain a powerful, underused tool.Planning for Exit or SaleEarly, proactive planning is essential—some reliefs require shares to be held for 24+ months.Options: third-party sale, management buyout, employee ownership trust (EOT), company purchase of own shares, or new holding company.EOTs: allow sale for 0% CGT if structured correctly, but success depends on a strong management team post-sale.Omar's Experience & PodcastOver a decade in finance, founder of ASWATAX (Leicester & London).Hosts “Talking Tax Podcast,” covering EOTs, IHT, R&D, and more.Contact DetailsWebsite: www.aswatax.co.ukEmail: omar@aswatax.co.uk or taxadvisory@aswatax.co.ukPractical TipsDon't delay—review your business and property structures now ahead of April 2026.Always seek bespoke, specialist advice before making structural tax decisions.Consider both current and future family/succession needs in your planning.Use comparative calculations to assess incorporation or restructuring benefits.Mention WealthBuilders if contacting Omar for tailored support.Resources MentionedJoin the Inheritance Tax Guide WaitlistWT103 - Employee Ownership Trusts w/ Chris BuddWT295 - The Exit Roadmap: How to Sell Your Business for Maximum Value w/ Chris SpratlingConnect with Us:Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and all major platforms. For more inspiring stories and actionable tips, subscribe to Wealth Talk and leave us a review!Next Steps On Your WealthBuilding Journey: Join the WealthBuilders Facebook CommunitySchedule a 1:1 call with one of our teamBecome a member of WealthBuildersIf you have been enjoying listening to WealthTalk - Please Leave Us A Review! If you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review WealthTalk on your favourite podcast platform

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Haus of Lucy (@HouseOfLucy) Haus of Lucy is a contemporary multimedia artist based in Sussex, celebrated for her unique fusion of traditional art with modern culture, often delivered with a satirical twist. With a background in magazine design, she made the leap to full-time artistry in 2019 following a high-profile commission for the Adidas flagship store in London. This key opportunity proved transformative, sparking collaborations with brands including Footlocker, Lazy Oaf, Primark, and Greggs. Her work cleverly disrupts classical conventions by inserting unexpected, often humorous elements into familiar scenes. A 15th-century landscape may feature an EasyJet aircraft, or a porcelain tureen might be repurposed as a KFC gravy boat. These imaginative juxtapositions invite viewers to reconsider the relationship between fine art and contemporary consumer culture. In addition to her prints, Lucy reimagines discarded ceramic figurines, turning them into provocative modern characters—like a demure Victorian lady armed with a chainsaw or a cherubic baby dabbling in the dark web. These pieces offer wry social commentary while preserving the nostalgic charm of vintage ornamentation.Working from her Brighton studio, Haus of Lucy continues to intrigue and amuse with work that is both visually striking and intellectually playful. This week on Blurry Hysteria, we're going from botany to debauchery faster than a cucumber can… well… explode.First up: Meet the squirting cucumber—a totally real plant that launches its seeds like a veggie cannonball at speeds up to 29 mph. It's evolution's answer to “hold my beer,” and yes, scientists are weirdly excited about its fruit-based fireworks. Then, things get extra juicy as we head to the quiet English village of Festival shame—I mean fame. Hundreds of adventurous couples descended upon a sleepy town for Swingathon, the UK's biggest sex festival. Camping, classes, and copulation abound—turns out the only thing louder than the exploding cucumbers might be the neighbors complaining. We're mixing nature's naughtiness with human hilarity in an episode that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about produce and polite British society. And yes, Flora makes all the cucumber jokes you're already thinking of (and worse).Links & Resources
In this REWIND episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Alice Maher (@Maher. Alice) Alice Maher is a prominent Irish contemporary artist whose work explores themes of identity, gender, mythology, and the body. Born in 1956 in County Tipperary, Maher studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Her practice spans a wide range of media, including drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, and film. Maher is known for using unconventional materials such as hair, nettles, thorns, and animal organs, challenging traditional boundaries between nature and culture, the beautiful and the grotesque. Her art frequently references Irish folklore, literature, and feminist theory, creating deeply symbolic and often unsettling imagery. Works like The Axe (and the Waving Girl) and Mnemosyne reflect her interest in memory, transformation, and the female experience. In addition to her visual work, Maher has collaborated with writers, musicians, and performers, enriching her practice with interdisciplinary influences. She represented Ireland at the São Paulo Bienal in 1994 and has exhibited widely in major galleries, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Maher remains a vital figure in contemporary art, both in Ireland and internationally. In this REWIND episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Simon Callery (@Simon.Callery) Simon Callery is known for his innovative approach to painting, which bridges the gap between two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional space. Born in London in 1960, Callery studied at Campion School and later at Cardiff College of Art. His work challenges traditional definitions of painting by incorporating sculptural elements—his canvases are often cut, pierced, folded, and stained with intense, earthy pigments. These works possess a physicality that invites viewers to engage not only visually but also spatially.Callery's artistic process is deeply connected to the landscape and archaeology, particularly the British countryside. Collaborations with archaeologists have influenced his method of working directly on site, allowing his paintings to absorb the environment both physically and conceptually. His paintings are often large in scale, with surfaces that appear worn, layered, and tactile—echoing the processes of erosion and excavation.By rejecting the illusionistic space of traditional painting, Callery creates works that are both objects and experiences. He has exhibited widely across the UK and Europe, with works held in public collections such as the Tate and Arts Council England. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to SLART (@SLART.ME) SLART — a figurative expressionist and proud outsider artist based in Swindon, UK. He dropped out of his A-level art class after his teacher told him he couldn't draw large scale. It wasn't until his late 30s that he picked up pen and ink again, prompted by a blog post that posed three questions about childhood pastimes. His answers were all “drawing and video games”—he chose drawing. Many life experiences fuel his art, including his adoption, chronic illness, two kidney transplants, the deaths of family members, everyday life, and a fascination with people and their stories — as an observer of others, shaped by chronic shyness and a deep feeling of being an outsider. Now he mainly paints large canvases using oils and acrylics, exploring themes of identity, memory, nostalgia and mortality, but often injects a humorous, self-deprecating element to his work. He writes about his art practice every Saturday on Substack (Substack www.creamofthecropbyslart.com) Upcoming solo show 6-18th September www.memementovivere.art Exhibition Details:MEMENTO VIVERE (Remember to Live) - Art Exhibition by SLARTThe Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Church, Euston Road, London, NW1 2BA7th September – 18th September 2025Free Entry Opening Night Reception: Saturday, 6th September 2025, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Invite only) In partnership with Beata Maria Rzepecka from Gabriel Fine Arts, invites the public to "MEMENTO VIVERE" (Remember to Live) "MEMENTO VIVERE" serves as a poignant reminder to embrace the beauty and fragility of existence. The works reflect a deeply personal journey of introspection while touching upon the universal human condition."People shy away from death," says SLART, whose work often combines memento mori and spiritual themes with pop culture influences. “This exhibition comes from facing my own health struggles and thinking a lot about life and death. But it's not all heavy — it's actually about hope and reflection. It's a reminder to wake up, notice the little things, and really live — with no regrets. Even when life feels messy, there's still beauty and meaning to be found."The exhibition aims to challenge viewers to reflect on their own lives, mortality, and choices, creating an appreciation for the fleeting nature of time. Using raw expression, SLART's art navigates complex emotions, testifying to human resilience and the drive to live fully during our finite lives. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Carrie Reichardt (@CarrieReichardt) Carrie Reichardt is not only one of Gary Mansfield's favourite artists, but one of his favourite people. She is such a multi-layerd person, a mosaic artist, a craftivist, she's vocally opposed to death penalty and an all-round bloody good person, albeit a bit of an eccentric one.Carrie Reichardt is best known for her mosaic and ceramic work, her amazing home is testament to the quality of her work (look online) although she could start to incorporate textile into her work soon. Carrie, along with partner Bob Osbourne, have just released a compilation of defaced banknotes by various artists in a hardback book entitled CASH IS KING, which is being launched at The Saatchi Gallery with an accompanying exhibition of a number of the banknotes. This episode has been a US Open-style challenge. And we have shot somewhere in the mid-70s, only hoping to make up some ground on the field in episodes to come. Iain is in Oakmont, Eddie drops in briefly from France (at which point Laurie Canter also gives us his thoughts on his first US Open) and Andrew joins from semi-consciousness at about 2 in the morning. Iain and Andrew give the full review of JJ Spaun's remarkable victory, Bob McIntrye's near miss and they all chat about Rory and what lies ahead for him this year.Visit: www.petermillar.co.ukEmail:tcf@thechippingforecast.co.ukInstagram: @chippingforecast Hosted on Acast.
