Nato Green started hanging out at San Francisco comedy clubs when he was in eighth grade. Nato's parents met when they both still lived in the suburbs of Chicago. They got married in 1968 and moved to San Francisco soon after that. Nato says that they “were in the counter-culture, but bad at it.” What he means by that is they didn't take their subversive lifestyles all the way like many of their peers did. But they were definitely left-leaning folks. They settled in Noe Valley, which was quite a different neighborhood back then. It was much more working-class than it is today. Think: blue-collar Irish- and Italian-American families. They had their first kid, Nato, and five years later, their second, his younger brother. When Nato was in middle school, his parents split up. He went with his dad to live at 22nd Street and Dolores, and then up to Bernal Hill. He split time between there and his mom's house in Noe Valley. Nato is quick to point out that Bernal Heights was also very different back then. There were even unpaved roads on the hill when he was a kid in the Seventies. Today, Nato uses history and some pop-culture references to date his own memories here in San Francisco. He remembers things like the Mosone/Milk murders and ensuing “White Night” riots, to name just one. The Forty-Niners' string of Super Bowl wins in the Eighties are another. Nato admits that he wasn't the best big brother. He lists off some of the SF schools he attended—Rooftop Elementary, MLK Middle School, and Lick-Wilmerding High School, where he went on a scholarship. His dad worked to the SFUSD for 35 years and worked on desegregation, among other things. He also taught in SF public schools. Nato says he was a “sensitive, depressed kid.” He read a lot, especially comic books. He graduated from high school in 1993, when the local music scene was overtaken by thrash/funk. Bands of that genre were plenty. Nato went to those shows, where he was able to, anyway. He wasn't yet 21. The first indie comic book store in The City was on 23rd Street in the Mission—The SF Comic Company, and two doors down was Scott's Comics and Cards. Nato became a Scott's regular. Others who hung out there a lot became his buddies. The SF band Limbomaniacs lived next to Scott's. Nato goes on a sidebar here about how bands in the thrash/funk scene never really blew up, mostly owing to what a uniquely live experience the music was. In 1990, when the Niners won the Super Bowl in a blowout, the Limbomanics played with guitar amps at the windows of their Victorian on 23rd Street, facing out. As Nato tells it, skater kids poured out of that house, and other neighborhood kids flocked to the scene. A mosh pit soon emerged, of course, on the asphalt. Nato goes on another quick sidebar here about all the different neighborhoods and scenes interacting on a regular basis. At least when he grew up, they did. Nato's main modes of transportation in San Francisco were his feet and Muni. The main bus lines were the 24, the 49, and the 67. His high school was on Ocean Avenue, but he mostly hung out in the Mission. One of his good friends lived in Lower Haight and had a car, so Nato would sometimes take Muni over there. That buddy with a car would also swing by and pick up Nato and his friends. They'd often go to the west side of town and hang out in coffeeshops. Nato rattles off several of those shops, also letting us what occupies those spaces today—Farley's (still there), Higher Grounds in Glen Park (still there), Higher Grounds in The Mission (closed), Café Macondo (Gestalt today), Blue Danube (still there), and the Horse Shoe (empty today). There's another sidebar about Jello Biafra. Nato says, “Don't meet your heroes.” As mentioned up top, he started hanging out at comedy clubs in The City when he was in eighth grade. There was a show on KQED called Comedy Tonight that featured local comics. Originally, the show was shot at Wolfgang's (now Cobb's), but it later moved to Great American Music Hall. Alex Bennet was on Live 105 in the morning and Comedy in the Park was drawing 50,000 people to the Polo Fields. There were five seven-nights-a-week clubs in SF, and at least five more around the Bay. People made a living as regional headliners. Around this time, Nato's eighth grade science teacher's roommate was the doorman at Cobb's. Word got around to that guy that a kid was into comedy, and so he started taking him to that club. He saw comedians such as Greg Proops, Dana Gould, Paula Poundstone, Mark Pitta, Johnny Steele, Will Durst, Greg Behrendt, and Margaret Cho. He watched these folks, some of them anyway, become headliners. Check back next week for Part 2 and the conclusion of our episode on Nato Green. Jennifer Coates, friend of the pod, is back to help me consider a new way forward (artwise) after the destabilizing event of the US election. She, herself, is finding comfort in the long history of rocks, geology and the cosmos, while I find myself turning to a book about how Matisse and his daughter, Marguerite, both reacted to the trauma of WWII in opposite yet valid ways. It's a bit of a potpourri, but we promise some great galvanizing art historical quotes and an inspiring double pep talk for the ages. Alternative title of ep: Rock Paper Scissors! Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don't Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies' version (in Barry's eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band's The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang's vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland's performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time. Are you familiar with the White Night Riots? What about the name Harvey Milk? In San Francisco in 1978, a man named Dan White may or may not have consumed a Twinkie. And this may or may not have lead to him taking the life of mayor George Moscone and his arch nemesis, Board of Supervisor member, Harvey Milk. Does one thing seem not to correlate with the other? Yeah, we didn't think so either. (If you'd like to learn more about the so-called Twinkie Defense, please check out this episode of Maintenance Phase). But regardless, the outcome of his trial was a slap in the face to the LGBTQ+ community. Enter the White Night Riots. The White Night Riots were a watershed moment in the LGBT rights movement. The protests brought national attention to the discrimination and violence faced by the LGBTQ community, and helped to galvanize support for the fight for equal rights and brought the police brutality issues the gay community was facing front and center. The riots also forced the city of San Francisco to confront its own history of discrimination and prejudice, and to take steps towards greater inclusion and acceptance. Also, this is our last episode before returning for season seven!! Thanks to everyone for letting us take a little break. Bryan Kohberger's, 'I like to drive at night' defense may seem weak to most. But he's not the only one who has offered an alibi that makes little to no sense. Here's a look at some of the other dumbest alibis in history. The "Twinkie Defense" (Dan White, 1978) Description: The 1978 murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk shook the nation. The man responsible, Dan White, was a former San Francisco Board of Supervisors member. At his trial, the defense attorney presented a unique argument suggesting that White's consumption of junk food, particularly Twinkies, was symptomatic of his severe depression. This was not to argue that the Twinkies caused his actions, but rather to highlight his compromised mental state. The media latched onto this defense aspect and dubbed it the "Twinkie defense," a name stuck in popular culture. While the defense itself might seem trivial or laughable, its implications were anything but. Using this argument of diminished capacity, White was convicted of voluntary manslaughter instead of first-degree murder. The public's reaction was strong, leading to the White Night riots in San Francisco. The case and its outcome had a lasting impact on legal discussions about responsibility, mental health, and how they're addressed in the courtroom. The "Dog Ate My Homework" Defense (Andrew Zieleniewski, 1993) Description: Andrew Zieleniewski's defense during his murder trial in the UK was reminiscent of an oft-used childhood excuse: that his dog had consumed his homework, and he was at home during the crime's occurrence, trying to retrieve it. This alibi might seem almost humorous in its simplicity, but its utilization in a serious criminal trial underscores the lengths to which individuals might go to establish innocence. Despite the peculiar nature of the excuse, it didn't hold up in court. The jury dismissed his claim, and Zieleniewski was convicted. The case serves as a testament to the intricate and sometimes bizarre narratives defendants might weave to escape justice. The "Television Hypnosis" Alibi (Simon MacMillan, 1990s) Description: Simon MacMillan, accused of theft, presented one of the most unusual alibis: he claimed he was under the spell of a TV hypnosis show during his crime. While not a murder case, it remains noteworthy for its audacity. MacMillan's defense hinged on the idea that television could induce a state of suggestibility so profound that one could commit crimes without being aware. In a world where concerns about media's influence have always been rife, MacMillan's defense pushed the boundaries of these fears. However, courts, grounded in scientific reasoning, didn't give credence to this narrative, further reinforcing the necessity for evidence-based defenses. The "Sleepwalking Killer" (Kenneth Parks, 1987) Description: Kenneth Parks' case is remarkable in legal annals. Parks had a well-documented history of sleep disorders. One fateful night, he drove 20 kilometers to his in-laws' home, assaulted both, and killed his mother-in-law. He then drove to a police station, and confessed, but with a twist: he claimed he had done all of this while sleepwalking. Medical experts supported his claims, pointing to a rare form of sleep disorder. The jury faced a moral and legal dilemma: can someone be held responsible for actions committed in a state they have no control over or recall of? Ultimately, Parks was acquitted, leading to global discussions about sleep disorders, legal responsibility, and where the two intersect. The "Werewolf Defense" (Bill Ramsey, 1980s) Description: Bill Ramsey's claims were perhaps more fitting for a horror movie script than a courtroom. During the 1980s in the UK, after a series of violent incidents, Ramsey proclaimed that he occasionally transformed into a werewolf, losing control during these episodes. Sporadic and unpredictable violent outbursts backed his claims, but no concrete evidence supported the supernatural aspect of his assertions. In 1989, after much public attention and media coverage, Ramsey underwent an exorcism, believed by some to rid him of his "werewolf spirit." While his claims were never used as a formal defense in court, they added a chapter to the annals of bizarre explanations for violent behavior. Each of these cases not only underscores the complexities of the human psyche and the lengths individuals might go to distance themselves from their actions but also challenges legal systems worldwide to consider and adapt to ever-evolving narratives of responsibility. Hello there, and welcome to A Brit talks Vintage TV, with me Jamie Dyer. 2021 marked the 85th anniversary of the birth of the man known as 'The Big O' and I can't get enough of him. Last year, my family and I spent a week in a static caravan. This was due to electrical works that were to take place at our property. While wondering what to do with ourselves, we turned on a documentary about the late, great Roy Orbison., I reviewed a new vinyl collection of Sun Records-era Orbison, collated by Bear Family Records. Little did I know that this review would set me up for a viewing of a famous Roy Orbison concert entitled Black And White Night. To say it was strange to see a performance recorded in the 1980s in old-fashioned monochrome is an understatement. However, it suited the intended mood perfectly. I am not sure that, when the pioneers of television were first laying down their television pictures in glorious 405-line, they would have considered it a stylistic choice when colour had long been the standard. Although, saying that, they may have appreciated it has its merits when compared to colour. In a similar train of thought, I wonder what they would have thought of colourisation; The process of taking something originally made in black and white and...well you know the rest. The concept of colourising black and white media has always been something that divides fans. However, it has come a long way since the likes of Ted Turner began colouring in old movies to show on TV. Utilizing computer software and a bit of manual quality control can produce pretty decent results. We saw it a few years back when CBS showed colourised episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show and I Love Lucy. While Black and White grounded them in the past, colour made them seem new again. The same can be said for the work on Network's latest release, Presented in SuperColorisation. A selection of six episodes from Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation series originally made in black and white, restored and colourised in high definition. The three series featured on the set are: One episode of Four Feather Falls, a western series starring the voices of Nicholas Parsons and Kenneth Connor. Two episodes of Supercar: A visually impressive yet strange series about a flying and swimming supercar, its driver, a professor, a child and a monkey. It's pretty funny too. And three episodes of Fireball XL5: A show my son thought was Supercar, but wasn't. I'm not as familiar with this show, but I do know it has a following. So what about the quality of the colourisation? How is it? To be completely honest with you...it's marvellous. The amount of detail in the work makes Anderson's magnificent stunt execution even more breathtaking. Explosions, water, falling rocks and so much more, are even more impressive. Narratively the inclusion of colour changes the mood somewhat, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Now do I think everything should be colourised? No. There are just some things that work best in their intended medium. The moody look of monochrome suits the vibe. Colourise it and you change that. People sometimes have an issue with the effect that colourisation has on the product. The Anderson set, for example, has instances where strings and other limitations are much more visible in colour due to the change in contrast to achieve the desired effect. Aside from Four Feather Falls, which I think suits black and white best, the shows have a whole new life ahead of them in colour. Presented in Supercolorisation is available to pre-order from NetworkOnAir.com, and will be released on the 12th of December 2022. Roy Orbison's Black and White Night can be found either on BBC4 or Sky Arts.
This month, Megan covers a story that she mentioned in passing a few months ago, and Danielle demanded to know more about. This one's for you, babe! Megan talks about the assassinations of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, and the resulting “White Night” Riots. Harvey Milk was the first non-incumbent, openly gay elected official in the United States, and was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Mayor, George Moscone, was his political ally. However, on November 27, 1978, they were gunned down by a coworker, fellow Supervisor, Dan White. The jury's verdict left not only Danielle absolutely shocked, but also shocked the entire city of San Francisco. Here's a little love letter to some of my girls, all of whom happened to have been at the same riot with GIVE 'EM HELL host Will Roscoe & Supervisor Harry Britt. We'll cover that story in episode 3 this Saturday—on the 43rd anniversary of the White Night Riots. On my Patreon bonus podcast, you can listen to a few more points of view from that night on May 21, 1979.
On November 18th, 1978, Jim Jones (NOT THE RAPPER) would call the last “White Night” over the intercom at Jonestown. The whole community watched as the poison was poured into the large containers of fruit punch. Some were ready to die for their false prophet. Others were terrified. None were given a choice. Join Kyle and Ardon as they reach the climactic moment of one of the most infamous cults of all time: JONESTOWN. When we left off last week, we had ended in tragedy. Five people, including Congressman Leo Ryan were shot and killed at an airstrip in Guyana by members of Peoples Temple in Jonestown. Nine other people were injured as a result of the shooting. And unfortunately, the tragedy was only going to grow. Please be advised that this episode will be playing several different sections of the Jonestown Death Tape that was saved from that infamous day. Sometimes you find yourself on a path you set out to be on, only to discover it was never meant to be. That's when 'choice' comes in. In this episode, Canadian actor Eric Hicks electrifies the waves with his powerful story of life discovery, peace, meditation, and joy. Yes - prepare to be inspired! About Eric: The middle child of Crawford, one of Canada's last remaining orthopedic shoemakers and mother Anita, a police officer and tattoo artist. His parents of English, Irish, Scottish and German ancestry raised him in the beautiful valley town of Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Eric first caught interest in acting at the age of 8 while watching the film "The Garden" being shot in his family home. A year later he found himself with a small part on the Jamie Foxx movie "Held Up" (Trimark). Getting the chance to watch Jamie Foxx act and perform his own stunts changed Eric forever. His parents soon bought him a camcorder and he started making his own home videos. What started out as insane stunts to impress friends and family soon turned into a life long passion. After graduating high school, Eric moved to Vancouver to study Prosthetics and Orthotics while pursuing acting, singing and dancing in his spare time. Two years later he entered the Canadian Model and Talent Convention and walked away with "Best TV Commercial" and "Overall Best Talent" awards as well as his first agent. Eric made the decision to put Prosthetics and Orthotics aside and move to Toronto to pursue acting full-time. Since then Eric has garnered world-wide attention having appeared in Quantico alongside Jake McLaughlin and Priyanka Chopra (ABC), "The Strain" (FX), "Reign" (CW), and in 2017 Eric was chosen to portray the recurring role of Constable D. Fox for 3 seasons of Daniel Grou's multi-award winning detective series "Cardinal" (CTV/eOne). Eric has recently portrayed real-life astronaut Dale Gardiner in the short film "Guion" and the main villain in the feature "A Christmas Catch" (HQ). In 2016 Eric signed with Primary Wave Artists and now divides his time between Toronto, Vancouver and Los Angeles. His recent work playing Kim Coates mole as Detective Ken Tucker throughout all of Season two's epic multi-award winning gang drama "BadBlood" (CityTv) as well as film appearances in "White Night" alongside CFC alumni Kimberly Laferriere (21 Thunder) and "The Christmas Wedding Planner" (HQ) with Kelly Rutherford and Jocelyn Hudon have proven Eric to be a viable new actor on the rise. - IMDb Mini Biography By: Eric Hicks How to reach Eric: Follow Eric on Instagram: @ericsamhicks
