Today we're going to look at an important episode in history, when the survival of Western civilization was under threat. In the summer of 1940, Germany was preparing to invade Britain by attacking Britain's shipping capacity, pulverizing its coastal towns, crippling its Air Force, and demoralizing the British people. But the people of Britain would not be cowed. Led by Winston Churchill, they threw their hearts into the war effort and endured a punishing blitz on their capital city, London. And about a thousand of their young men flew in the Fighter Command of the Royal Air Force—and courageously, miraculously repelled the German Luftwaffe. We'll take some personal lessons from this inspiring history—about which Churchill said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Links The Former Prophets Malachi's Message to God's Church Today

A vivid narrative history, packed with first-hand accounts, of the US Eighth Air Force's VIII Fighter Command from its foundation in 1942 through to its victory in the skies over Nazi Germany. On August 7, 1942, two events of major military importance occurred on separate sides of the planet. In the South Pacific, the United States went on the offensive, landing the First Marine Division at Guadalcanal. In England, 12 B-17 bombers of the new Eighth Air Force's 97th Bombardment Group bombed the Rouen–Sotteville railroad marshalling yards in France. While the mission was small, the aerial struggle that began that day would ultimately cost the United States more men killed and wounded by the end of the war in Europe than the Marines would lose in the Pacific War.Clean Sweep is the story of the creation, development and operation of the Eighth Air Force Fighter Command and the battle to establish daylight air superiority over the Luftwaffe so that the invasion of Europe could be successful.Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has had a lifelong interest in the history of the fighter force that defeated the Luftwaffe over Germany. He has collected many first-hand accounts from participants over the past 50 years, getting to know pilots such as the legendary “Hub” Zemke, Don Blakeslee and Chuck Yeager, as well as meeting and interviewing leading Luftwaffe pilots Adolf Galland, Gunther Rall and Walter “Count Punski” Krupinski. This story is told through accounts gathered from both sides. Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has been a published writer for the past 40 years, with his most recent work being the best-selling Osprey titles MiG Alley (2019), I Will Run Wild (2020), Under the Southern Cross (2021), The Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club (2021), Going Downtown (2022), The Cactus Air Force (2022) alongside the late Eric Hammel, and most recently Clean Sweep (2023). Tom served in the US Navy in Vietnam and currently lives in Encino, California. In part 2 of our Battle of Britain documentary, we explored how after Germany had swept over continental Europe, Britain under Prime Minister Winston Churchill refused to give in to Hitler's will but while the British have spirit to spare, fighters and pilots to fly them were becoming increasingly scarce and unless things changed dramatically, Fighter Command would be whittled down into defeat. It was just a matter of time. In this episode we are going to explore the climax of the Battle of Britain and how Fighter Command was able to bounce back seemingly from the dead to achieve victory. Welcome to Wars of the World.
Every year for Battle of Britain Day, 15 September we commemorate what has been described as the turning point in the Battle of Britain during World War II. Bentley Priory was home to fighter Command in the lead up to and during the Battle of Britain and explores how technology, leadership and courage forged victory, enabling Britain's darkest hour to also be her finest hour. The Museum highlights the contribution and importance of ‘The One‘, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, ‘The Few‘, the aircrew who took to the skies to defend Britain, and ‘The Many‘, without whose tireless work on the ground victory would not have been possible. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Chloe Marley, Collections Manager from Bentley Priory Museum to find out more about their online recorded audio descriptions of some of the key exhibits and objects that are on display in the museum which tells the story of the building pivotal role as home to Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain along with details about their two self-guided audio described tours that are available to blind and partially sighted visitors. Do visit the access pages of the Bentley Priory Museum website via the following link for more details about the online audio descriptions, the two self-guided audio described tours and other access facilities for blind and partially sighted visitors to Bentley Priory Museum - https://bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk/visit-us/access/ (Image shows RNIB logo. In this episode of the podcast, we catch up with Alex Collinson, a volunteer from Bentley Priory Museum in Stanmore who we last spoke to at one of our Merlin Engine Run events last October. You can find out more about RAF Bentley Priory the Headquarters of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain, the Memoirs of the Blitz exhibition and Bentley Priory Museum's opening times on their website, bentleypriorymuseum.org.ukOf course you can also discover many items and stories about the Blitz and the Home Front back at the Wings Museum. Whilst it would be impossible to say that you would really know how it felt to be there, when you step inside a genuine Anderson shelter, or see how claustrophobic an under table Morrison Shelter would be, your imagination can certainly fill in many of the gaps.Take a look at our website, wingsmuseum.co.ukhttps://www.wingsmuseum.co.uk/2022/04/podcast-memoirs-of-the-blitz-at-bentley-priory/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Battle of Britain started on 10 July 1940, ending 16 weeks later on 31 October 1940. The Luftwaffe's intention was to destroy Fighter Command, domination of the skies being crucial to Hitler's invasion plan. During that fateful summer, young RAF fighter pilots, flying Spitfires and Hurricanes, were scrambled time and time again to face insuperable odds – and the Luftwaffe was, until that point, unbeaten. The enemy fighter pilots, in their brightly painted Messerschmitt 109s, were the most experienced in the world. But somehow the RAF pilots, fighting desperately in a spider's web of intricate vapour trails, and with sudden and violent death an ever present companion, prevailed. Afterwards, Churchill paid homage to them all: ‘Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few'. A legend had been born.Dilip Sarkar has been fascinated by the Battle of Britain since childhood and began seriously researching the subject in the 1970s. He wrote thousands of letters and travelled extensively over the UK interviewing the fabled ‘Few'. Over the last 30 years he has interviewed more Battle of Britain survivors than any other author and his archive is a unique collection of veterans' ‘voices'. In this new book Dilip Sarkar chronicles the Battle of Britain from start to finish drawing extensively from his interviews with pilots. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thehistoryexpress/support

A different perspective on our “Finest Hour”, the Battle of Britain. Whilst the courage, skill and sacrifice of the pilots of Fighter Command is unquestionable, were German forces in fact capable of achieving a successful seaborne invasion of Britain in 1940? Has the contribution of both the Royal Navy and Britain’s land forces (as portrayed by Dad’s Army) in preventing an invasion been underestimated by popular history? And to what lengths was the British Government prepared to go in the event on an invasion being attempted? Harry Sherrard sheds some light on German capabilities and British defensive measures in 1940.

August 2015 In this episode we take you to the royal launch of a major new exhibition, which looks at the roots of codebreaking as we know it. The Road to Bletchley Park was officially opened on July the 29th by Bletchley Park’s Royal Patron, HRH, The Duke of Kent. We have interviews with the designer, a sponsor, our friendly GCHQ Historian & family members of two of the WW1 codebreakers. This episode also features highlights of the last three years’ Veterans’ Reunions, as this year’s approaches. It’s always a highlight of the year for Veterans and their families, making new memories as they revisit their wartime workplace and learn more about the things they weren’t allowed to know at the time. Find out who’s still to come in the Bletchley Park Presents lecture series and what’s being laid on for children during the school holidays, at no extra cost. Also this month, we speak to Sinclair Mackay, who’s written numerous books about Bletchley Park, and has described researching and writing them as the best job of his life. In his most recent book, The Secret Life of Fighter Command, he tells the stories of the men and women in this unique and world famous organisation. Sinclair gave a talk on the subject as part of the Bletchley Park Presents lecture series, and the podcast caught up with him afterwards. The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the newest fighter in the RAF and was used in front-line day time duties in Fighter Command. On the 19th of July 141 Squadron of Defiants (nine aircraft) were sent up to intercept Bf110s that were reportedly dive bombing shipping off Dover. Whilst they were still climbing, a group of Bf109s were sweeping high above the English Channel with perfect visibility. Undetected by the climbing Defiants, the Bf109s were able to position themselves to attack from the sun. The brief but brutal combat resulted in the loss of six out of the nine Defiants and signalling the end of the RAF using them as daytime frontline fighters.19 July 1940Day: Dover raided. Defiant squadron largely destroyed.Night: Some activity between Isle of Wight and Plymouth, Thames Estuary and Harwich.Weather: Showery with bright intervals in most cases. Channel winds light - fair. This post details aircraft crashes, pilots, places, engagements, news and facts from the day's action.Follow us on Twitter @BofB1940 for real time tweets from the Battle of BritainAnd read our blog for more in depth analysis, revelations, descriptions and comment: http://bofb1940.blogspot.co.ukread by Kit Dunster
