In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren assess the state of the Buffalo Sabres, a team that once again finds itself outside the playoff picture—with 14 consecutive seasons without a postseason appearance.Despite fielding the 10th-ranked offense in the NHL last year (3.23 goals per game), the Sabres were undone by a porous defense, surrendering 3.50 goals against per game—tied for 29th in the league. That imbalance ultimately left them short once again, and this offseason's moves raise more questions than answers.Buffalo made a surprising decision to trade J.J. Peterka—one of their most promising offensive talents—to Utah for Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring, signaling a possible shift in identity. The hosts debate whether the team has improved at all, or if they've simply shuffled the deck with hopes of becoming "harder to play against."IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] The Sabres: Still on the outside looking in[00:30] Trading Peterka: A puzzling move for physicality over skill[01:00] Offseason additions: Doan, Kesselring, Timmins, Bevo, Jones, Danforth[01:30] Goalie update: Devon Levi returns, Luukkonen still in the mix[02:00] Key RFA re-signings: Byram, McLeod, Quinn, Johnson[02:45] Where does the turnaround come from?[03:15] Prospect watch: Anton Wahlberg & Konsta Helenius[04:00] Defensive outlook: Dahlin, Power, Byram, and new faces[04:45] Can the goaltending support this blue line?[05:15] Final verdict: More grit—but not more wins?KEY TAKEAWAYS:Buffalo's defense-heavy offseason suggests a pivot toward physicality—but the loss of J.J. Peterka removes a key offensive weapon. The defense core has potential, with Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, and Bowen Byram leading the way, but it's still unproven as a cohesive unit.Goaltending needs to be elite if this team wants to overcome its offensive step back—can Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen deliver? While the Sabres appear deeper on the blue line, it's unclear if they've made enough improvement to leapfrog teams like Montreal, Detroit, Columbus, or Ottawa in the East. With Lindy Ruff back behind the bench, expectations are higher—but so is the pressure.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #BuffaloSabres #JJPeterka #JoshDoan #MichaelKesselring #ConorTimmins #IsaacBelliveau #ConnorClifton #JustinDanforth #ZacJones #JackQuinn #RyanJohnson #TysonKozak #RyanMcLeod #BowenByram #DevonLevi #LindyRuff #RasmusDahlin #OwenPower #Ukko-PekkaLuukkonen

They also review the innumerable failures of German high command, from the meddling by Hitler that led to a culture of fear that engulfed all decision making, to Kesselring's mismanagement of frontline troops. Rita Kesselring's important book Bodies of Truth: Law, Memory, and Emancipation in Post-Apartheid South Africa (Stanford University Press, 2017) seeks to understand the embodied and everyday effects of state-sponsored violence as well the limits of the law to produce social repair. Of particular interest in Kesselring's theorizing of the relationship between the body and the law as a mechanism to critique South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Dr. Kesselring's book is an innovative study of the TRC, with a focus on embodiment and the ways in which formal justice institutions do not consider the everyday violence of injustice. Her study illuminates this tension, of people craving justice from institutions that are not designed to deliver it, leading the women of the civil society organization Khulumani to file suit in the United States under alien tort laws. Kesselring recommends three books to listeners keen to dive deeper into issues of reparation, law and justice after Apartheid in South Africa. They are Charles Abrahams' Class Action: In Pursuit of a Larger Life (Penguin South Africa, 2019); Fiona Ross' Bearing Witness: Women and the Truth and Reconciliation in South Africa (Pluto Press, 2002); and Georg Kries' Switzerland and South Africa 1948-1994 (Peter Lang Publishers, 2007). Al Murray and James Holland discuss the beauty of naval acronyms, the fine details of the Eureka signal and the myth of Kesselring's fine war record. They also look into General Mark Clark's blistering letters, in which he calls for total destruction of the German war machine. Casus Belli Podcast pertenece a 🏭 Factoría Casus Belli. In episode 144, I chatted to Andrew Sangster about Alanbrooke. Earlier this year, I noticed Andrew had a new book, Flawed Commanders and Strategy in the Battle for Italy, 1943-45. With his co-author Pier Paolo Battistelli, the book looks at Montgomery, Mark Clark, Patton, Harold Alexander, Albert Kesselring and the fighting in Sicily and Italy. There is too much to cover in a single episode of the podcast, but I've asked Andrew back to discuss the fighting in the Mediterranean from the perspective of Kesselring. Andrew Sangster has six degrees, in Law, Theology and four in history including his doctorate. An ordained priest, he has trespassed away from the Church to teaching and the study of history. He has taught in grammar schools and at Eton College, was a headmaster for some nine years and has assisted post-graduate students of history. He has some twenty published history books to his credit both in the United Kingdom and overseas with some co-authored with Pier Paolo Battistelli, the well-known Italian historian. When not called for Church duties he studies the lesser-known aspects of modern history and plays chess for relaxation. Patreonpatreon.com/ww2podcast
In the mold of Adrian Warburton, one George Beurling comes to Malta in July. Like Warby, George or Screwball as he is called, does not care for much for anything really, only flying and fighting. And in a short time, he will cause hell for the Axis pilots. However, Kesselring has ordered Fliegerkorps II to be given more pilots. The overwhelming air attacks on Malta are gearing up again. But this time, it will be Vice Air Marshall Keith Park leading the defense of Malta. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
As April 1942 comes to an end, a spot of hope is dashed as the Axis continue their daily bombing of Malta. The ships and subs have been driven away, the island's air force is weak. The only thing holding the invaders back is Malta's AA gun crews and they are running out of ammunition. Gen. Kesselring's plan of breaking Malta is working. Learn more about your ad choices. The RAF on Malta actually run out of Hurricane fighters on March 3rd. Fortunately, the promised Spitfires arrive. But how are 15 Spitfires supposed to hold back the entirety of Kesselring's air arm of Italian and German planes. The dark time for Malta are far from over. Learn more about your ad choices.
