Bruce Dowding was a young Australian teacher who arrived in Paris in 1938, planning only to improve his understanding of French language and culture. Following the Nazi invasion of France, he became a leader in escape and evasion during World War II. In fact, he helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France and paid the ultimate price. His service led him to paying the ultimate price, and he was beheaded by the Nazis just after his 29th birthday in 1943. Today Justin talks with Peter Dowding. Peter worked as a solicitor and barrister for many years in Australia, beginning in 1966. He also served in various positions with the Labour Party and was elected to serve as the 24th Premier for Western Australia from 1988 until 1990. Peter is here to tell the story of his uncle Bruce who was studying in Paris when Germany invaded duriNg WWII and felt the call to contribute in any way that he could.  Bruce served in uniform, was captured, escaped, joined the French resistance, and even served at the behest of Britain's MI9. His life was cut tragically short during the war, as were so many others. To view a video version of the talk, click here.  Young Australian teacher Bruce Dowding arrived in Paris in 1938, planning only to improve his understanding of French language and culture. After the war broke out, Dowding helped exfiltrate hundreds of Allied servicemen from occupied France. He eventually paid the ultimate price and was beheaded by the Nazis just after his 29th birthday in 1943. His story is told in the book Secret Agent, Unsung Hero, written by Bruce's nephew, prominent Australian lawyer and former Western Australian Premier Peter Dowding and historian Ken Spillman. Mark Dowding is Chief Investment Officer at BlueBay Asset Management. Mark is a macro fixed income specialist who meets regularly in that context with global policymakers and has been actively involved in sovereign ESG engagement.
