GENE RODDENBERRY'S MISOGYNY. Apparently, women couldn't be Star Trek captains all along. In a season that began with "Spock's Brain," wherein we discovered that Gene Roddenberry (and Gene L. Coon) had a chip on his shoulder about beautiful women preferring handsome men in their prime the season -- and series -- ends with a similar diatribe from Roddenberry's mind. This time, women want the same positions men have, only, they don't have the constitution to handle the job! It's a silly notion foisted on TV viewers by a silly man and a tough way to end the run of a show that had largely been an inspiration to everyone, regardless of gender. Will the crew figure out that Captain Kirk's mind has been swapped out with a vengeful ex-girlfriend? Due to some scheduling changes, this episode is Kristen's first date back to record even though she's appeared recently; and, look out for another release tomorrow as part of our weekly schedule. Today's a special one because it's the 55th anniversary of "Turnabout Intruder."The grades begin at (27:22).

This week the EARTH STATION TREK crew had the privilege of speaking with Andreea Kindryd, author of the upcoming book From Slavery to Star Trek, about her time at Desilu studios during The Original Series. She shared stores of working closely with Gene L. Coon and the Star Trek production team, her family's journey out of slavery, working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., her close relationship with Nichelle Nichols, and much more. We also pay our own tribute to Nichelle Nichols and her legacy. Earth Station Trek is a part of the ESO Podcast Network, Executive Producer Mike Faber.
After ignoring a warning buoy to stay away, Captain Kirk and his landing party are punished for violating Melkotian space by being made to appear as the Clanton gang in a facade of Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. According to history, the "Clantons" -- in this case, Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Chekov -- will meet their fate later that day at the OK Corral in a gunfight with the Earps and Doc Holliday. Captain Kirk tries everything he can to avoid the showdown and prove his peaceful intentions, but history cannot be changed -- or can it? Despite all of the cards stacked against it (and there were many), Season 3 of "Star Trek" got off to a pretty terrific start -- at least, in terms of its production order -- with "Spectre of the Gun," superbly written by the always-reliable Gene L. Coon (under his pseudonym "Lee Cronin"). While the end result is basically a rehash of the first season classic "Arena" (also written by Coon), "Spectre of the Gun" ultimately succeeds as one of the third season's finest episodes, thanks to a clever and surreal setting, intense direction by Vincent McEveety, a stellar score composed by Jerry Fielding and strong performances from the entire cast. The 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan serves as a sequel to this episode. References to "Space Seed" appear in episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Enterprise, and the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness.
ARENA is one of those episodes of the original Star Trek series that everyone remembers. Kirk fighting the Gorn on the asteroid with the cool angular rock formations. It’s the one where he cleverly identifies some various elements and minerals and builds a radio out of coconuts… no wait… wrong 60s TV series. Kirk does his best when what he can find lying around, but there’s so much more to this episode. There’s an attack on a destroyed outpost, some fun ops on the bridge, and that exciting battle between the two starship captains staged by the superior beings. It’s an episode with everything. Kathy, Mark and Burk are once again joined by our friend and Star Trek Written by Gene L. Coon (based on a 1944 short story of the same name by Fredric Brown) and directed by Joseph Pevne.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/CinemondoPodcast)
Grab your remote control and get ready for pain and delight as we go looking for "Spock's Brain"!Novelist William Leisner returns to the show this week to discuss an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series that has become emblematic of the low points of TOS. When a lady in go-go boots puts the whammy on the Enterprise, the crew wakes up to find Spock's cranium empty. Now, Kirk must take a cave elevator ride to the center of a cold world ruled by even colder women to rescue the cerebrum of his first officer and friend! The third season of TOS was met with budget cuts, a creative brain drain, and the defection to greener pastures of the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry. But it's perhaps the absence of former showrunner and head writer Gene L. Coon that was the biggest blow to Star Trek's credibility. Coon was a gifted and versatile writer and he knew that Star Trek needed the occasional comedic touch to counteract its often leaden didacticism. Unfortunately, Coon had left the show by the start of Trek's wobbly third season, and his pitch for "Spock's Brain" was developed into an uneven hour of Trek that lacked Coon's gift for both plotting and comedy. On this episode, we talk about the evolution of TV writing and viewership since the '60s, the thin line between pathos and parody, the speed bumps affecting Trek's 3rd year, the shortsightedness of NBC, Trek's most successful comedic entries, a hypothetical (and possibly depressing) 4th season of TOS, and the feat of delivering essential Trek stories even when your hands are tied.We also discuss the Council of the Valley of the Dolls, Maximum Shatner, a gritty Mannix reboot, a lost-and-found box for face parts, not going "full camp", the 10 pm "death slot", a planet of Nixons, the Scottish Faint, "who throws a club?", Spock casual, the De Kelley sweat lip, and "Riker's Brain"!If you can't handle me at my "Spock's Brain", you don't deserve me at my "City on the Edge of Forever"!Follow Bill on Twitter!http://www.twitter.com/BLeisnerLearn the story behind your favorite Trek stories with Backtrekking!http://www.twitter.com/backtrekkingSwap brains with us on Facebook and Twitter and the Just Enough Trope Discord!http://www.facebook.com/eistpodhttp://www.twitter.com/eistpodhttps://discord.gg/UeytGNPBuy us a new civilization on Patreon!http://www.patreon.com/eistpodSubscribe to the show on iTunes!https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/enterprising-individuals/id1113165661?mt=2

Maffiahálózatok veszik át a kormányzást a Sigma Iotia II felszínén, miután a Horizon száz évvel korábbi kapcsolatfelvétele egy könyv hátrahagyása miatt kulturális fertőzéshez vezet: az utcákon a 20-as évek Chicagójához hasonlóan rendszeresek a rajtaütések és bandaháborúk, a legnagyobb területet birtokló Béla Okmyx pedig a Csillagflotta haderejével szeretne csapást mérni a rivális vezetőkre, amikor a foglyul ejtett leszállócsapat felszerelését tanulmányozza. Aktuális adásunk témája ’Az Enterprise gang akcióba lendül’ című epizód. Rövid hírszekció: • Lehet, hogy feléled a Kelvin-univerzum: a Paramount Noah Hawleynek adta a megbízást, hogy hozza tető alá a folytatást. A történet megírásán kívül a rendezést is ő valósíthatja meg. • Magyar szinkronnal nézhető a 2018-as Lost in Space sorozat első évada. Vajon a Star Trek: Discovery szinkronjára mikor számíthatunk? • A Deep Space Nine alkotói kezdetben nem a tribblis epizódon (Trials and Tribble-ations), hanem ennek a történetnek a folytatásán gondolkodtak. A saját világunk fejlődése vajon mentes a külső beavatkozások hatásaitól?
Scotty egy felhőtlen estére készül az orvosi eltávozásán, a társaságában lévő argeliusi hölgy azonban váratlan késszúrás áldozata lesz. A Mr. Scott birtokában talált gyilkos fegyver azonnal gyanúba keveri a főgépészt, a nyomozás során pedig további hölgyek veszítik az életüket, akik utolsó perceiket szintén Scotty közelségében töltik. A vizsgálat és a kihallgatás a helyi prefektus és a Rigelről érkezett felügyelő segítségével zajlik, az Argelius törvényei szerint ráadásul Scotty halálos büntetés elé nézhet, amennyiben megállapítják a bűnösségét. Aktuális adásunkban a ’Farkas báránybőrben’ című epizódról beszélgetünk. Rövid hírszekció: • Sorra vesszük a hivatalos Picard regényeket és képregényeket a sorozat januári bemutatkozása előtt. Az adásunk felvétele közben zajló Destination Star Trek Birmingham 2019 rendezvényen Picard admirális egyenruhája is megtekinthető a Countdown képregényből. • Novemberben a négy mozifilmet és két duplaepizódot tartalmazó Picard gyűjtemény Európában is elérhető lesz, aminek a „Sky's the Limit” képregény is a része.
Rövid hírszekció: • A CBS felvillantotta a Picard sorozat címét a reklámozóknak és a nagyközönségnek, miközben a forgatási helyszínről érkező képek találgatásra sarkallják a rajongókat. • A sötétség mélyén élő rettegett teremtmények a közös tudatalatti termékei: horrorfilmes felütés az epizód elején, ami a történet végére gyökeresen más fordulatot vesz.
It begins here! In this episode, our panel of bold STAR TREK franchise explorers — Chris Clow (Movies.com, Comics on Consoles), Rachael Clow (Biology PhD candidate), Zaki Hasan (Zaki's Corner, MovieFilm Podcast), and Cicero Holmes (Spawn On Me Cast) — is back at full strength to begin a series of discussions all centered on each of our favorite single STAR TREK episodes! First up is Chris, with "The City on the Edge of Forever" from season one of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES! Listen as our panel unpacks this episode and attempts to answer why it remains one of the most enduring and iconic staples of the entirety of the storied STAR TREK franchise. We discuss its troubled behind-the-scenes stories from its radically different first draft teleplay by sci-fi firebrand HARLAN ELLISON, to the final product collaboration between the likes of GENE L. COON, D.C. FONTANA, and GENE RODDENBERRY. Plus, hear us examine the themes and subtext that all add up to one of TREK's most revered stories. PLUS: we react to the rumors of PATRICK STEWART's potential return to the role of CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD, the surprising turn of events that has befallen DISCOVERY's former showrunners, the installation of ALEX KURTZMAN as the show's new skipper, and even throw in a word or two about THE TOYS THAT MADE US' TREK-centric seaosn premiere! Inside The Apple with Marc Cushman. Computers controlling humanoid populations is a common theme in The Original Series, as is the association between these situations and the worship of God here on Earth. In “The Apple,” the two were brought together in a most obvious way as Kirk and his landing party find themselves in the Garden of Eden.
