Things are heating up as Laura and Xhafer finish Part 2 of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries. Laura asks more questions Xhafer can't answer and stans a queen. Show Notes Episode 462: Saga of A Star Wars Rip Off This week Host Dave Bledsoe angrily shouts at Producer Gavin insisting he was NOT playing with his dolls again. (He totally was.) On the show this week we head back to 1978 to talk about a short lived but influential Science Fiction TV show that wasn't JUST a Star Wars rip off. (But kind of doing that a little) Battlestar Galactica. Along the way we learn a little about some other short lived shows of the 70's. (That Janeway/Odo crime fighting team up sounded great!) Then we dive right into the story of a Hollywood titan, some Latter Day Saint theology and how they came together to fight the Cylons. We follow the story from production to debut in theaters and on the small screen at home. We meet the actors who would create memorable characters (and some we wish we could forget, FUCK BOXY!). From the beginning of its single season to the inevitable lawsuits we tell the story of a ragtag fugitive fleet trying desperately to find a new way to monetize the Star Wars mania sweeping the world. Our Sponsor this week is Sy Lonika's Centurion AI, who wants you to know, they have a plan. We open the show with a promo for the show and close with TBone Shady who is just looking for some kind of way out of here. In this episode we do our very first Battlestar Galactica Deep Dive! 16 Days after the 12 colonies are attacked by the Cylons, "Doral" makes it aboard the Galactica only to blow himself up. This breach in security launches an independent tribunal searching for answers. We felt like this episode was a great opportunity to do some character studies on Cmdr Adama, Chief Tyrol and President Rosalin. We dive into decision making, conspiracies, leadership and more!
In this episode, things go sideways for the Cylons, Tory is sent on a mission that really impacts her, Lee leaves the military for real, and Starbuck is given a mission. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Time to access the memory banks, Slackers.A few weeks ago we covered one hit wonders, but what about those one season TV shows? Why does a show that was barely on our TV screens have such a strong imprint in our memories?Regardless of quality, shows like Misfits of Science and Manimal have somehow endured in pop culture. Was it because they were actually terrible, were they any good, or were they just a product of their time? They were probably terrible, but some shows that only got one season definitely deserved at least one more chance. Shows like Battlestar Galactica had a much more successful reimagining in the 2000's - while the Joss Whedon space western, Firefly, was plagued by a bad time slot - although thankfully they got a feature film that served to finish the story. One thing is certain - many of these one season shows were the career launching points for future stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Courtney Cox, and Nathan Fillion. What are some of your favorites?
It's Dragon Con weekend, but we didn't forget about a weird Flopcast summer tradition: our annual robot-themed Top 4 1/2 List! And we have a special guest to deliver the list: our old pal (and original Sponge Awareness Foundation member) Jim, finally making his Flopcast debut! Jim has a list of surprise robots from movies and TV; that is, robots that we didn't know were robots until the big reveal. Call them androids, call them simuloids, call them replicants, Cylons, fembots, whatever you like. But they're robots in disguise, and they're out there. By the way, the Chickaphant, an alien chicken/elephant hybrid, is also out there somewhere. Please don't leave the house. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! Director Jennifer Phang has helmed episodes of some major shows -- THE BOYS, RIVERDALE, THE EXPANSE, RESIDENT ALIEN, THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, and more. Her latest film is Disney's DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED. In this conversation, themes of humanity, mother/daughter relationships, and robots of all stripes abound in this episode, and no wonder, when Jennifer's brought us the rich dual Grace Park roles of Boomer and Athena from beloved '00s sci-fi series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. When the fleet catches a Leoben on the Gemenon Traveler, Starbuck gets assigned to interrogate him with an extremely specific bucket. But after President Roslin wakes up wet from one too many NyQil dreams, she hears Leoben out before returning to Commander Adama's position. What doesn't belong on a postage stamp? Where did H.R. Giger get all his ideas? Who definitely deserves a swirly? It's time for our second annual summer movie panel! This time we are talking about the possible end of the summer blockbuster (as we know it) and the end of the world in film. The panelists discuss the lack of hype around any specific movie(s) this year as compared to what we saw with last year's Barbie/Oppenheimer pairing and the trend in post-apocalyptic imagery in films like Dune: Part Two and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. We also hear about movies for kids like Inside Out 2 and talk about what made Challengers so successful. GUESTS: Alissa Wilkinson: Movie Critic at the New York Times. She is also an author who co-wrote the book 'How to Survive the Apocalypse: Zombies, Cylons, Faith, and Politics at the End of the World.' Nadira Goffe: Associate Culture Writer at Slate James Hanley: one of the founders of Cinestudio in Hartford A few of the films discussed in this episode: 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' (2024) 'Inside Out 2' (2024) 'Dune: Part Two' (2024) 'Challengers' (2024) 'Anyone but You' (2023) 'Poor Things' (2023) 'This is Cinerama' (1952) 'Evil Does Not Exist' (2023) 'The Idea of You' (2024) 'Exhuma' (2024) You can listen to last year's Disrupted summer movie panel on our website.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send us a Text Message. For this show, we venture into the fascinating intersection of mythology and science fiction through the lens of Battlestar Galactica. From the original 1970s series to the 2000s reboot, we uncover how certain pagan and celestial references are ingeniously woven into the storyline with names like Pegasus, Commander Adama, and Lieutenant Athena aren't just characters—they're symbols of a grander narrative that tie the drama into the premises of the ancient astronaut theory. We also focus on Caprica, the prequel series that adds further depth to this rich universe and also on how the human survivors of a millennia-long war with the Cylons seek out the elusive 13th Colony, which is here on planet Earth. You'll find intriguing connections to the Hebrew Bible's creation story and the reptilian attributes of the Cylons. Mormon cosmology is also significant, particularly the parallels between planet names of Kolob and Kobol, showcasing creator Glenn Larson's intent to infuse the narrative with elements of Mormonism. As we round out our discussion, the thematic richness comes to light with love, betrayal, vengeance, and theology and forms a complex web that mirrors real-world advancements in AI. We delve into the series' depiction of the android robot Cylons integrating into their society, drawing parallels to actual automation, and show how there are religious undertones to it, such as creation and resurrection. The story reminds of the poignancy to what the late astrophysicist Carl Sagan had once said about us being made of "star stuff" and helps us ponder the possibility of our origins from the out there in the cosmos. From Terminators and Cylons to the War Droids from Star Wars, military robots are staples of science fiction. But they're already here in the real world too. The US, China and Russia are all investing efforts into military machines – but they won't be the gun-toting humanoids we see onscreen. Would taking human fighters off the battlefield increase the peace? Or should we be gravely concerned about this new era of international war? Today on Why?, Emma Kennedy speaks to Kelsey Atherton, an award-winning military-tech journalist and Chief Editor of the International Policy Journal. • “Militaries are deeply invested in the idea that things flow from the top.... The more autonomy you give a machine the harder it is to put in command and control.” - Kelsey Atherton • “If a robot makes an error, it's on the person who programmed it… these weapons are brought to battle with errors built in.” - Kelsey Atherton WHY? is written and presented by Emma Kennedy. But when President Rosalind suggests running instead of fighting the Cylons, Commander Adama is convinced that hope will save what's left of humanity. Which actor gives two characters for the price of one? What's the most likely name for a robot child? Who is more Larkin than Larkin himself? When it's time to make a museum out of the Battlestar Galactica, the ship's decommissioning ceremony turns into an even busier day for Commander Adama. But when the Cylons magically split the trolly and send it down both tracks, President Rosalind enters into a power struggle with the new leader of the Colonial fleet. What's the dream move during any argument? Are the Capricans actually Pah-wraith people? How does someone get through TSA with a meat scroll? On Episode 141 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis continues the celebration the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA! This show is an American science fiction media franchise created by Glen A. Larson. It began with the original television series in 1978, and was followed by a short-run sequel series (Galactica 1980), a line of book adaptations, original novels, comic books, a board game, video games and a reboot series. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor with an exclusive interview is MARNEEN LYNNE FIELDS, a former stuntwoman who served on BSG as a stunt double for Jane Seymour, Maren Jensen, Laurette Spang and Brett Somers (among others). She also portrayed one of the female Viper pilots, although her screen time is very brief in that regard (since her unnamed character was shot down by the Cylons). Marneen also appeared on shows like Fantasy Island, Man From Atlantis, The Rockford Files, Shirley, Quincy M.E. and Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Additionally, she served on films like The Gauntlet, The Swarm, The Concorde ... Airport '79, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, The Howling and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. In addition to BSG and other parts of her interesting career, Marneen talks about her upcoming directorial debut, Who's Gonna Take Care of Me? 153 -Exploring Leadership Through Science Fiction I dive into the world of leadership through the lens of science fiction. In this episode, we explore the epic television show Battlestar Galactica and its portrayal of leadership during a time of crisis. With four distinct leaders, each with their own approach to leadership, it's a fascinating exploration of the tensions that arise as they work together to save humanity from the threat of the Cylons. But that's not all! We also discuss two other science fiction series, The Expanse, and Ender's Game, and how they depict leadership in different contexts. The Expanse focuses on the political tensions between Earth, Mars, and the Belters, while Ender's Game follows a young boy's journey to become a leader during an intergalactic war. Throughout this episode, we emphasize the importance of trust, communication, and adaptability in effective leadership. We want to encourage YOU to reflect on your own leadership styles and consider what you can learn from the diverse range of leaders portrayed in science fiction. Whether you're a seasoned CEO or just starting out in your leadership journey, this episode provides a unique perspective on leadership. It highlights the complex challenges that leaders face in times of crisis and the importance of staying true to your values while remaining adaptable to changing circumstances. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/?p=3699 Jill's Links https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

Is it possible that aliens have been steering humanity for years, hiding clues of their existence in such inconspicuous places as the Pyramids of Giza? Is the dawn of civilization a gift from cosmonauts from another world? Could the human race itself be the spawn of bestiality committed by Mork from Ork on our primate ancestors? Scientists have never found evidence that we're not actually Cylons. Surprisingly, before written language was invented in Mesopotamia, not much is written about human beings and our history. Happily, we can speculate wildly about what fantastic things could've been and if any pesky archaeologists get in the way of our fun sci-fi imagination, we'll tell them they're a buzz-kill and they're suppressing the truth. Sean & I booked a trip to find some experts who had open minds, unburdened by establishment archaeology, in the best place to find visitors from outer space & their fans, Arizona. We had tickets to the Ancient Aliens Live Tour, with five of the regular cast of the eponymous History Channel show, including the guy with the hair, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos.
Pop those stims and stay awake with us as we discuss Season 1 Episode 1 of Battlestar Galactica, "33". In this episode, the fleet is on the run every 33 minutes as the Cylons are somehow able to track where they are over and over.
