August 1974 zuvor.

I'd Rather Be Reading

Today on the show we're talking about the legend that is Barbara Walters. We actually have another journalist I admire, Susan Page, who wrote The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters (which just came out on April 23), talking about a journalist I admire, so our cup runneth over with powerhouse female journalists. Barbara lived a long, full life, passing away on December 30, 2022, at 93 years old. In her lifetime, she became one of the most well-known and well-regarded broadcast journalists and television personalities, perhaps most famous for her genius level interviewing ability and for breaking barriers that once prevented women from being equal to men when it came to broadcast journalism. She was an Emmy winner and hosted numerous programs like Today, the ABC Evening News, 20/20, and she created The View, which Susan and I talk about on the show today. She was a working journalist from 1951 until her retirement in 2015 and was very deservedly inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989; she even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the early 1960s, Barbara was relegated to reporting on women's interest stories on Today, but her popularity amongst viewers eventually catapulted to her becoming a co-host of the show in 1974, the first woman to hold such a role on an American news program. In 1976, she broke down more barriers when she became the first American female co-anchor of a network evening news program alongside Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News—which, um, did not go so well. Don't worry, Susan and I talk about that, too. She became known for her annual Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People, and during her career interviewed every sitting U.S. president and First Lady from the Nixons to the Obamas; she also interviewed both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but not when either was president. Her interviews with subjects ranging from Fidel Castro to Monica Lewinsky and so many more gained her recognition as the best interviewer in the business, but who was Barbara Walters the person, not the personality? Well, Susan's book lays it all out. We learn about Barbara's marriages—she was married four times to three men—her daughter, other romantic relationships, and her childhood, especially her relationship with her father and her sister, and how those relationships shaped her into the woman she became. Today on the show to discuss it all is Susan Page, the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for USA Today. This is Susan's third biography of a powerful woman: her first, about Barbara Bush, was released in 2019 and is called The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. She then released a biography about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power in 2021, and her third book is The Rulebreaker. Susan has covered seven White House administrations and 11 presidential elections and has interviewed 10 presidents, right up there with Barbara Walters. She also moderated the 2020 vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, founded and hosts a video newsmaker series for USA Today called “Capital Download,” and appears frequently as a panelist or an analyst on various news programs, including Meet the Press—and was even president of the White House Correspondents Association at one point. I can't wait for you to hear our conversation.   The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters by Susan Page

You know, one of those songs that you start to hear every year when the season rolls around.” The Nixons have also released a lyric video for the new version of “December” via Pavement Entertainment. Featuring dynamic visuals and performance shots of the band, this video highlights the rewritten lyrics while celebrating the original version of the song. When asked about the changes made, Maloy says, “The original song ‘December' was more about missing life events but assuring loved ones that I'd be home in that last month of the year. I wanted to rewrite some lyrics to lean in to the holiday spirit of it all. While I love the original, we took a more no frills approach this time around. We realized when we played the song live a few winters ago, it kinda rocks. So we hope fans enjoy this new, edgier, rockin' holiday tune!” Hailing from Oklahoma City, The Nixons are comprised of singer Zac Maloy, guitarist Jesse Davis, bassist Ricky Brooks, and drummer John Humphrey. Tech makes so many things easier in our lives. Unfortunately, it is killing your business. Tech may make it easier for customers to buy. But, it's making it more difficult for you to sell. THE SERVICE STATION Jim Pendergast lived 6 houses up the street from us on the corner when I was growing up. He owned the neighborhood service station. When mom had issues with the car, we'd go see Jim. It was a full service Phillips 66. Jim would pump your gas, clean your windshield and even check the oil if you needed it. We knew Jim, and Jim knew us. Today, you can fill your tank at the gas station and never even talk to anyone let alone know them. When it comes time to have your car serviced, who do you trust? For the last 20 years, I've taken my car to a Midas shop owned by Rick and Brad. When the dealer would tell me I needed work done, I'd take the car to Rick and Brad. One time the dealer said I needed brakes all the way around. I told the dealer I have a brake guy and took the car to Midas. Brad took a look at it and said I still had 3 to 6 months left. Nothing to worry about. He said we'd look at it next time I was in for an oil change. Here is a place that specializes in brakes telling me I don't need brakes. 6 months later Rick and Brad were putting brakes on my car. In July, we took my wife's car into Midas for an oil change. There was a new guy behind the counter. Rick and Brad had sold the franchise and retired. I'm stuck looking for the next person I can trust. Relationships are critical in business. Tech is making it very difficult to create those relationships when we don't interact with people. GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY When I was a kid, we knew everybody on our street. We lived on the corner of a T intersection. Because we were outside playing all the time, we knew everybody. The Nixons, the Weises, the Domenges, the Smiths, the Franks, the Schulers. We knew them all. When toys from the neighbors ended up in our yard, we just took them back over. If their dog got into our backyard, we simply returned him. Today, my son doesn't have a best friend. He knows nobody in our neighborhood, because he is glued to his tech. He hangs out with his buddies on a headset playing Xbox. It's not just my family. We live on a cul-de-sac and nobody is ever playing in the circle. Our neighbors even installed a basketball hoop facing the street, so kids could play. It rarely gets used. I would have killed to live in a circle when I was kid. We'd be out there playing street hockey all the time. And because we don't know our neighbors, it is easy to get angry at them when their dog is in your yard or you have to move a stray ball when you're mowing. We don't know each other. The relationships have been sucked out of society. Love thy neighbor is a thing of the past. ROAD RAGE On my way to a meeting the other day, I was driving behind a really slow SUV on the two-lane highway. She was going a few miles per hour below the speed limit. We were winding through these tree-lined areas, which made it difficult to know where you were or when you needed to turn. It was a bit confusing. I couldn't get around her. Every time I was turning, she would turn. I was behind her forever and felt the tension rise inside of me. My anger was building. As I approached my turn into my destination, she began to slow down. Her signal came on to make the exact same turn. It suddenly hit me that she may be going to the same place, and I might just know this person. I started to feel guilty that I was mad at her. Maybe she didn't know these roads any better than I did. Why was I getting mad? It's easy for us to get mad and lash out at people we don't know. We hide behind our screen names and post nasty things online that we would never say to people we know. We have no relationship to lose, so being nasty isn't a risk. YOUR BUSINESS But when we have no relationship, it also makes it difficult to do business. Think of the last big purchase you made from someone you knew. Maybe it was a car or coaching program. How confident were you in that purchase? Now think of the last big purchase you made from somebody your didn't know. Maybe this was a car or piece of furniture. How confident were you in that purchase? Did you get a good deal? Will it actually solve your problem? What if things go wrong? Relationships make business so much easier. THE LEMON My wife and I recently purchased a used car for my son from a local dealer. My son needed a car to get back to New York where he plays Junior Hockey. The dealer has been in town for years, but we've never purchased from them. It was a nice 2015 SUV. I was just looking for a deal. About a month after we purchased the vehicle, Simon started hearing noise from the front tire. We took it to the shop. It needed a new front CV axle. It was $1,300. The dealer called and said that fixed the noise. However, there was a new noise and it needed a new transmission. It was going to cost $2,500. I had the car towed to another shop who did another transmission for me in the past. Joel looked it over and called me with the news. It didn't need a new transmission. The new noise was because it was 3 quarts low on oil. After a call to the original dealer, I discovered this particular model is know to burn through oil. So much so that Hyundai has extended the warranty on the engine due to the issue. I can't have my 19-year-old son babysitting the oil in a vehicle. So, I wanted to exchange it for something else. The dealer wouldn't help. He wouldn't return my calls. When I did get a call, it was from his service manager or sales manager. Never the GM. THE NEW VEHICLE We finally got fed up and traded it in for $4,000 less than the purchase price at a different dealership. That sure was some deal. This time we traded it for another used vehicle to a dealer where I've purchased 3 other vehicles in the past. We dealt with Jason who has treated me great in the past. That's why we keep going back. We got a great deal and a great vehicle. My son and I just drove that car from Omaha to New York. No problems at all. It is so much easier and assuring when we make a purchase from somebody we know. The relationship makes all the difference. And one step away from buying from someone we know is making a purchase from someone recommended by somebody we know. TECH LACKS RAPPORT Rapport is such an important ingredient of the sales recipe. Unfortunately, tech doesn't allow us to build rapport. We order our groceries online and have them brought out to our car. Other than the kid that delivers the groceries, we rarely talk to anyone. When we visit a fast food restaurant, we order at the kiosk and pick it up at the window. Or worse yet, we order online and have it dropped off at our door. Our Christmas shopping is done on Amazon and delivered on our front porch. We don't even talk to the delivery guy. When I was a kid, we knew Karen. She was the clerk at Baker's supermarket. We'd see her every Saturday when we'd do our shopping. When we'd go into Manglesen's for Christmas gifts, David was there to help and answer our questions. Relationships were built with the businesses who sold us what we needed. We trusted them, because we knew them. Today, we don't know anyone except Siri and Alexa and the pretend lady that pops up in the chat on the dealer website to help you schedule your next oil change. COUNTER THE TECH Bring the relationships back to your life. Love thy neighbor. Society needs it. Your business needs it. Take action against the tech to restore relationships. Start sharing your story. Let your ideal target clients get to know you. Become well known by becoming known well. The best ways to build that rapport and drive your business is sharing your story and your why on your podcast. Audio is such a personal medium. It makes visions dance in the theater of the mind. When you and I watch a video, we see the exact same thing. There is very little left to the imagination. If we watch a video of couple horses trotting through a field, we see the exact same horses in the exact same setting. However, if I tell you a story about a couple horses trotting through a field, you envision it in the theater of the mind in a way that is perfect for you. How many horses were there? Was it an enclosed pasture or out in the wild? Were the horses being ridden by anyone? Did they even have saddles? What color where the horses. Was it day or night? Flat or mountains? Today or years ago in the wild west? WHAT DID YOU ENVISION? Earlier when I told you about following that lady in the SUV going really slow on the 2-lane highway, what did you envision in your theater of the mind? Where was I? What was on each side of the street? How many other cars were around. What time of day was it? How old was the lady? What color was her SUV? We were driving down a 2-lane, 55 mph highway off the coast of Northern California just after 8 in the morning. The sun had just come up. There was still a bit of fog in the area. Each side of the street was line with tall trees that hid the vineyard tucked behind the rustic houses. The smell of skunk would occasionally waft through my car signaling an early end to a critter out on an early morning stroll. The middle-aged, salt and pepper haired lady in the small, dark blue SUV was typically driving 10 mph under the speed limit. She was obviously unfamiliar with the area even more than I was. The six other cars with me in line behind here were bobbing and weaving looking for the right opportunity to pass her. Just before we entered the tree-lined entrance to the beach, she turned left at the big neighborhood sign where I was planning my turn. Then she stopped. I was trapped with the security guard building on my right, the island dividing the two lanes on my left, and her stopped SUV lost in front of me. GET PERSONAL The theater of the mind is magical and personal. And when people are listening to your podcast, they are usually doing it alone and often with earbuds or headphones. Where are you listening right now? Who is with you? Sure, video has all the glitz and glam. But it doesn't have the connection you get with audio and podcasting. I've had people come up to me and have full conversations as if we'd been best friends for years even though we've never met. They've simply been listening to me. People will tell me, "I know we've never met, but I feel like I've known you forever because I've listened to you years." That's the power of relationship. When people are ready to solve their problem, they will start with the person with whom they already have a relationship. Don't wait until your prospect needs your solution to start building the relationships. And don't leave it up to the tech. People don't build relationships with your lead magnet, and trip wire funnel. Share your story. Spread your vision. Start building relationships today and save your business from the tech.   If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. In this episode: I talk with Beorn from the Stereo app. Find Beorn on Stereo @beorn or IG @StereoBeorn. This is an excerpt from our live talk on 10.7.22 Part 1 of 3 We cover a lot of ground in this episode including term limits, rank choice voting, the drug war vs legalization, and blockchain voting. President Biden in a highly political move pardoned people in federal prison for marijuana charges. This is a really hollow and meaningless act just done to gain headlines and make Biden look progressive when he is the farthest thing from a progressive president. The reason this is such a hollow gesture is that most people in jail for marijuana are tried at the state level. To be in in federal prisoner for marijuana you would need to have been caught smuggling into the country or across state lines. If Biden really wanted to do something of substance, he would have rescheduled marijuana so that it was no longer a "class 1 drug" in the same category as heroin and crystal meth. Another thing he could have done would have been to decriminalize marijuana federally or have made it legal nationwide. Any of these would have had profound impact and would have helped thousands ensnared in our antiquated war on drugs. The class 1 classification is for drugs with no medical use. Well, we have seen a ton of information come out in the last decade about how hemp (cbd) and marijuana (thc) have a multitude of medical uses. Not to mention California legalized marijuana for medical use in 1996. This would seem to me to set a precedent for rescheduling if not full-blown national legalization. The entire election system in the US needs to be overhauled and it seems Blockchain technology offers a great mechanism to do this. Blockchain voting would offer a solution to many of the ills facing our current political system including access to voting, election security, election transparency, and greater citizen involvement. First off, blockchain provides a record of each step in a process which would prevent election fraud and would secure our elections from ballot tampering. Second, with our voting being done online more people would have a chance to vote. Third, we could open the process and provide greater transparency, so the people were actually able to vote on every issue/measure and remove the element of secrecy that corrupt politicians hide under. Too often politicians will pass some shady bill at midnight on Thanksgiving or Christmas knowing nobody is paying attention. I say we need to make voting day a national holiday and move toward greater transparency with the help of blockchain technology. Psylocibin mushrooms are showing very promising potential in the treatment of a number of mental health issues from ptsd to depression. It is time we moved to a more progressive drug policy in this country. All prescription psych meds were derived from LSD when it was being studied in the 1950s before it was criminalized. Who knows what type of progress we would have made on mental illness if this research was not stopped. I believe it is time we allow research to resume. President Nixons head aid announced on his death bed that the Nixon administration had created the war on drugs so they "could arrest blacks for heroin and hippies for marijuana". If you get a felony, you can never vote again, so the drug war was used as a tool in political warfare. There isn't a Dig Me Out listener who isn't familiar with Everclear, a staple of ‘90s alternative rock radio and MTV. With a string of hits like “Santa Monica,” “I Will Buy You a New Life,” and “Father of Mine,” Everclear spent the better part of the decade relentlessly touring, playing to sold-out crowds around the globe. But, had it not been for the relative success of the band's 1993 debut, World of Noise, Everclear might have been just another footnote in a long line of forgotten bands. Singer Art Alexakis had tried his luck in San Francisco with the band Colorfinger in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s but after that band's demise, moved with his pregnant girlfriend to Portland, Oregon where he decided to give the music thing one last try. Though World of Noise was cheap to make, the songs that Alexakis recorded with bassist Craig Montoya and drummer Scott Cuthbert - rough and raw as they were - caught the ears of major label A&R reps looking for the “next Nirvana.” After an initial release on indie label Tim/Kerr Records, Capitol Records picked up the band and reissued the debut, and set Alexakis on the way to a career that has lasted 30+ years. For the first time ever, World of Noise is now available on all major streaming services, and a vinyl reissue is planned for later 2022. While Montoya and Scott Cuthbert (and Cuthbert's replacement, Greg Eklund) are long gone, Alexakis continues to make a living by releasing new Everclear music and touring. While the venues may be smaller, the passion is still there and Everclear will be celebrating World of Noise, and the rest of its catalog, on a summer tour with openers Fastball and The Nixons.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - Fire Maple Song 4:38 - Nervous and Weird Outro - Sick and Tired   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich
Office Hours: Is there any way to push Garland to prosecute Trump?

The Coffee Klatch with Robert Reich

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2022 1:57

Friends,Bennie Thompson, chair of the January 6th Committee, has told reporters that the committee has no plans to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department. This strikes me as absurd. The major purpose of the committee's carefully constructed prosecutorial brief is to clear the runway for indictments. The pushback on Thompson's statement was instant, beginning with vice chair Liz Cheney, who put out a statement flatly contradicting Thompson: “The January 6th Select Committee has not issued a conclusion regarding potential criminal referrals. We will announce a decision on that at an appropriate time.”Thompson's statement won't influence the Justice Department. As every constitutional lawyer knows, it doesn't take a criminal referral from Congress for the attorney general to proceed with an indictment. But what will it take? After watching the second day of hearings, Susan (from our substack community) wrote on this page: Let's hope AG Garland is paying very close attention. Whereas Ford's pardon put Nixons criminality to rest for the nation, he opened the door for the likes of Trump. It's time to prosecute, we can never allow this to happen again.Susan raises the key issue, which is this week's Office Hours question: What levers do we have to get Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump? Please comment below. (I'll chime in as well.)Friends, here are my two cents:There's no way to push an attorney general to prosecute a case, and in our legal system there should not be. But I believe -- contrary to the view of the chair of the January 6 select committee -- that when the committee completes its work it should make a formal criminal referral to the Justice Department that spells out its findings in the clearest possible terms. If the facts lead the committee to conclude that Trump likely committed crimes against the United States, the committee should say so explicitly. It is traditional for congressional committees to make criminal referrals when they think a crime may have been committed. Although the Justice Department is under no obligation to pursue these referrals, a criminal referral signals that the legislative branch of government finds or suspects a crime – an important symbolic act. There are three arguments against the committee making such a criminal referral:(1) It could backfire. Decisions about whether to prosecute must be made independently of politics: Garland and the Justice Department won't want to be seen as doing the committee's bidding. And the district and appellate courts that would handle Trump's prosecution might take a dim view of any intermingling of the work of the political branch with the work of federal prosecutors. (2) It's unnecessary. Attorney General Merrick Garland has repeatedly pledged to follow the evidence wherever it leads, and he has said that he and his Jan. 6 prosecutors are closely watching the committee hearings.(3) The committee has already, in effect, made a criminal referral to the Justice Department – arguing in a legal filing last fall (over whether it should be able to access emails from John Eastman, Trump's attorney) that Trump broke multiple laws. In response, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter issued an opinion that said Trump “more likely than not” committed crimes to stay in power.Notwithstanding these considerations, public opinion is crucial. Trump attempted a coup while president of the United States. As many Americans as possible should understand how dangerous and vile this act was. Yet at this point, a third of Americans (including some two-thirds of Republicans) still believe Trump's big lie. For a bipartisan committee of Congress to conclude that Trump has likely committed such a crime would be significant. A criminal referral would garner big headlines. Even if it did not change the minds of die-hard Trumpers, it would be an important part of the historic record. And it would almost certainly increase public pressure on Garland to prosecute Trump -- or at least make public his reasons for not doing so. This is a public episode.
