Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long".

In 1970, Avon Books published a landmark anthology, “Science Fiction Hall of Fame,” featuring 26 classic short stories that represent landmark tales of the genre. The stories were voted on by the members of the new (at the time, in the late 1960s) organization Science Fiction Writers of America. In this series, I will be joined by a panel of guests to break down these stories and talk about the authors in the book. In this episode, I am joined by my Star Trek roundtable bridge crew vocal Star Trek fan Sara Lynn Michener, and Musician/ filmmaker Issa Diao. Why the Star Trek crew because we are covering the classic Fredic Brown short story Arena, originally published (same month as D-day) the June 1944 issue of Astounding. Twenty-two years later it was adapted into an episode of Star Trek. You know the one with the Gorn! I also did into my Star Trek papers that includes inner office memos and notes on the screenplay.

TOM MEAD chats to Paul Burke about THE MURDER WHEEL, DEATH AND THE CONJUROR Joseph Spector, the Golden Age era, true crime, theatre, magic and illusion. THE MURDER WHEEL: 1938, London. Ambitious lawyer Edmund Ibbs has got his teeth into the case of a lifetime - defending the young woman accused of shooting her husband in the infamous 'Ferris Wheel Murder' case. Despite a plethora of evidence against his client, Ibbs is certain he can secure her acquittal. But after a night of magic and illusion at London's Pomegranate Theatre, Ibbs finds himself behind bars, accused of a double murder. The renowned prestidigitator Professor Paolini and the operator of said notorious Ferris wheel are dead, and as far as Scotland Yard's Inspector Flint is concerned, all signs point to the lawyer's guilt.Luckily for Ibbs, illusionist turned sleuth Joseph Spector also attended the theatre that night. Can Spector's eye for detail pierce the veil of deceit in a world of illusion and misdirection, where seeing is not always believing?Tom Mead is an aficionado of Golden Age crime fiction. His short stories have appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and Lighthouse, as well as Best Crime Stories of the Year (ed. Lee Child). In this episode we sit down once again with Jack Seabrook -  The author of two books on popular fiction: Martians and Misplaced Clues: The Life and Work of Fredric Brown (1993) and Stealing Through Time: On the Writings of Jack Finney (2003).  He has had articles published in crime fiction magazines such as The Armchair Detective and he is a lifelong reader of comic books! Among other things he intends to educate the world to the joys of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and DC War and Horror comics. We listen to "Thou Still Unravished Bride" originally published in EQMM,  October 1958.  I would also encourage you to watch the Alfred Hitchcock episode so you can compare and contrast the story and adaptation. For more information see www.avramdavidson.com

"Experiment" opens with a scientist eagerly demonstrating his newly invented time machine to his colleagues. The machine, although small, serves as proof that time travel is possible. The men are enthralled by the prospect of traveling through time but fail to consider the ethical and moral implications of their actions."Sentry" introduces readers to a soldier stationed on a distant planet light-years away from his home. Initially, we assume the soldier is human, just like us. However, the story takes a startling twist when we discover that the soldier is, in fact, an alien visiting Earth.♥️Patreon Page - Help keep the show ad-free

Dimension X was an NBC radio program broadcast mostly on an unsponsored, sustaining basis from April 8, 1950, to September 29, 1951. The first 13 episodes were broadcast live, and the remainder were pre recorded. Fred Wiehe and Edward King were the directors, and Norman Rose was heard as both announcer and narrator, opening the show with: "Adventures in time and space... told [or transcribed] in future tense..." For two months, beginning on July 7, 1950, the series was sponsored by Wheaties. Overview: Preceded by Mutual's 2000 Plus (1950–52), Dimension X was not the first adult science fiction series on radio, but the acquisition of previously published stories immediately gave it a strong standing with the science fiction community, as did the choice of established writers within the genre: Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, Fredric Brown, Robert A. Heinlein, Murray Leinster, H. Beam Piper, Frank M. Robinson, Clifford D. Simak, William Tenn, Jack Vance, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Williamson and Donald A. Wollheim. Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts adapted most of the stories and also provided original scripts. In Science Fiction Television (2004), M. Keith Booker wrote: It was not until the 1950s that science fiction radio really hit its stride, even as science fiction was beginning to appear on television as well. Radio programs such as Mutual's 2000 Plus and NBC's Dimension X were anthology series that offered a variety of exciting tales of future technology, with a special focus on space exploration (including alien invasion), though both series also often reflected contemporary anxieties about the dangers of technology. The series opened with "The Outer Limit," Ernest Kinoy's adaptation of Graham Doar's short story from The Saturday Evening Post (December 24, 1949) about alien contact. A week later (April 15, 1950), the program presented Jack Williamson's most famous story, "With Folded Hands," first published in the July 1947 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. With a five-month hiatus from January 1951 to June 1951, the series spanned 17 months. All 50 episodes of the series survived and can be heard today. Later, NBC's X Minus One (1955–58) utilized many of the same actors and scripts.

Lawrence Block has published over 200 books. He is now in his eighties and his output has been greatly reduced. Even so, he is still full of surprises. A few years ago he told me that he had probably published his final novel. Then he wrote "Dead Girl Blues." I assumed that would definitely be it though, that he was finished with novels. Fortunately I was wrong, Lawrence just put out yet another fine novel, "The Burglar Who Met Fredric Brown." Over the years I have interviewed him five times. During this conversation he offered up a tantalizing hint, thathe is working on something. He would not say what. I cannot wait to find out what it is.

Weird Darkness: Stories of the Paranormal, Supernatural, Legends, Lore, Mysterious, Macabre, Unsolved

Find Weird Darkness wherever you listen to podcasts: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: “Knock” by Fredrik Brown starts with a short-short story based on the following text of Thomas Bailey Aldrich: ***“Imagine all human beings swept off the face of the earth, excepting one man. Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long". Brown's short story then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and builds a more complete plot around them. “Knock” was originally published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and the Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). And now it gets another adaptation – in this episode.
