Do we recognize the things that subtly creep in and distract us from being able to love God with a whole heart? Fear and worry will eat up our focus and attention and crowd out our love for the Lord. Competition with the world - trying to love the Lord and love the world at the same time will cause our love for God to grow cold. And even just busyness (even if it's good things) so often distracts us from Him! We need to guard against allowing other things to pull our focus away from wholehearted devotion to the Lord. This is the foundational bedrock of the Christian life: God loves us. When we receive that love, it changes us. Our desire is that this new study on the command of Christ to “Love the Lord” will open your eyes to see the love of God for you. Receiving God's love is the one thing that will ignite in us a desire to love Him back and then enable us to become channels of His love to others.Want to go deeper in studying this command of Christ? Have you ever realized that from the beginning to the end of the Bible, the primary way that loving God is defined is by keeping His commandments? This makes all the sense in the world when we see that the word keep means “to treasure” and “to guard.” What are you treasuring in your heart? Because “where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21).This is the foundational bedrock of the Christian life: God loves us. When we receive that love, it changes us. Our desire is that this new study on the command of Christ to “Love the Lord” will open your eyes to see the love of God for you. Today Daily Devotional

What does the Lord . . . ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve [him] . . . with all your heart and . . . soul . . . ? — Deuteronomy 10:12 It seems so natural to love God because he first loved me (John 13:34; 1 John 4:19). But I remember when I didn't love God with all my heart and soul. In that way each one of us is like the ancient Israelites. There are people, things, and situations that compete for our love and attention. They often start subtly and cause our love for God to shift, fluctuate, and fragment. Our love for God is a response to his love for us. Obedience is an excellent indicator of our love. Jesus told his disciples, “If you love me, you will keep my commands” (John 14:15). Love for God and obedience to God are inseparable. We know that loving God goes beyond words. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we follow the Lord by leaving our old life behind. Life is no longer all about us but about our love relationship with the Lord. We deepen our love by getting to know God's character, who he is, his ways, and what he does. We do this by reading the Bible, observing God's presence in our lives, and being around people who love him. I remember when Deacon John and Claire invited me for a meal at their home. John was a quiet, stoic type. Before he prayed, he read aloud from the book of Psalms. Tears came to his eyes as he read about God and his goodness. Love comes from a heart of gratitude. Loving Father, I love you and want to love you with all my heart and soul. Thank you for your love. In Jesus, Amen.

What feeling does the word command evoke in you? Do you view commands as something hard, frustrating, and grievous? For many of us, God's commands can make us feel frustrated and burdened because we view them as something we must do in our own effort. But did you know obedience to God's commands is supposed to be a joy and even a liberty? In today's guest episode with Caleb Reed, your view of God Himself will be challenged as you see commands from a totally different perspective. God's commands don't flow from a desire to make us just behave and “stay in line.” His commands flow from a heart of love. God's commandments are an invitation from our loving heavenly Father to go deeper into a relationship with Him. If we find that obedience is a burden and a chore, it doesn't mean that the command is wrong. It simply means that our view of God is off and we don't understand His heart of love in giving the command. When we see and understand His love for us, obedience will become a joy.Caleb Reed is an evangelist who travels full time with his family preaching in churches, camps, and Christian schools. He and his wife Emma have 3 children. They have a burden specifically for the local church. They desire to come alongside local pastors and aid them in equipping the saints. For more information, visit us at https://homediscipleship.comFind us on Facebook and Instagram @homediscipleshiphttps://www.facebook.com/homediscipleshipnetworkhttps://www.instagram.com/homediscipleshipnetwork
