Meet Hawah Kasat -- who gave a startling TEDx talk on How Greed Could Save the World. What??? Isn't greed what's destroying the world? In a world that is crumbling between our fingers, is it possible that traditional non-profits are actually distracting us from solving the underlying problems that make them needed in the first place? Hawah invites us to reflect more deeply on whether we are spending our time and energy effectively. What if we fundamentally rethink what nonprofits and businesses look like? What if we start with the premise that helping a few struggling people when millions are suffering is not good enough? What if we get more greedy and stop being content with anything less than lasting, systems-level change?Hawah has dedicated his life to teaching about solutions to violence and ways to peace. He is Founder of “One Common Unity,” a non-profit that inspires a culture of non-violence through music, arts, and education. Author of 4 books, he produced 4 documentary films (including the acclaimed “Fly By Light”), 2 musical CDs, and is the creator/editor of “The Poetry of Yoga” book anthology featuring Grammy award-winning musicians and master yoga teachers. In 2019, Hawah was the recipient of Georgetown University's “Legacy of a Dream” award honoring an inspirational emerging leader whose work embodies the values and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Hawah also interviewed David Gallup of the World Citizen Government on his podcast The Everlutionary Podcast!hawahkasat.com--- See the video and ask questions of future guests at: theworldismycountry.com/club Music by: „World Citizen“ Jahcoustix feat. In this episode, Chetna shares: The Chetna Unfolding newsletter where she's been publishing more recently about longing and depression as portals, second arrow suffering, the addiction to binary thinking, and more Ahimsa and nonviolence, and the confusing contemplation about what peace means today The day count and loss of 30,000 Palestinian lives, 1,400 Israeli lives, and uncountable plant and animals lives taken by genocide An introduction of Hawah Kasat, an award-winning educator, community organizer and yogi among other things HawaH talking about “negative peace” and “positive peace” How the negative/positive peace binary helps her understand to some degree, but also has its limitations HawaH talking about the nuance of nonviolence Binary-thinking as a strategy to make quick moves in a panic The illusionary clarity of binary-thinking that leaves little room for nuance and complexity How relying on panic to carry us forward f*cks us over even more by fueling even more panic and suffering. The distracting suffocating binary of enough and not enough in regards to our activism The present-traumatic stress caused by over-consuming media How there is no one-right way and to believe and assert on others that there is one right way to think, to be, to act right now may be a perpetuation of domination and separation The inquiry: “how can I expect to steward- from my dysregulated nervous system- a New Earth that's wholly different from the one built by dysregulated nervous systems?” The inquiry: “how can I- and we- be influences of change in the world without perpetuating colonial cultures of separation and domination?” The inquiry: “how can I expect to disrupt the cycles of trauma and fear when I'm acting from my trauma and fear?” Her desire to normalize when and what we don't actually know…and to open to the possibilities of connection and healing in that unknown. Friends, we have made it to episode 9 in the Trusting God Series! Can you believe it? I am emotional as I think about wrapping up our study on the life of Abraham. I am sure we will revisit this material and the life of Abraham time and time again. It is rich with the truth! Today we are at a passage of Scripture that is always associated with Abraham. In Genesis 22, Abraham is asked to sacrifice Isaac. I am emotional as we approach this text for so many reasons. Here are a few of the reasons: We have walked the journey with Abraham and Sarah over the last eight weeks. We have felt the ups and downs. We have seen the highs and lows. As we approach this text, my heart wants to reach out to Abraham and Sarah and say, “Hang on!” God is going to provide! As I read this passage, I can’t help but think about the faithfulness of God, the struggle of Abraham, and how the faith journey is not easy. Demonstrated faith is not “feel good” faith that is Instagram-worthy. Often the journey is long and hard. I think about Issac and how he was a young man when this story took place. He was able to process what was happening, yet, he obeyed his father. There is no doubt. Isaac was loved and cared for by his parents. Genesis 22:1-14 Refined Faith is Obedient Faith (Genesis 22:1). God showed up and called Abraham by name. Never forget that God initiates encounters, and we have the opportunity to respond in obedience and faith. The purpose of this encounter was to test Abraham. It is SO important for us to understand the word “tested” in this passage. Let’s dig into the original Hebrew to better understand what “tested” meant in its original context. The Hebrew word is Nasah and means "to test, try, prove.” Generally, this word carries the idea of refining the quality of someone or something through stressful circumstances. God refines those He loves to see if they will remain loyal to Him and live in obedience to Him. The heart of God was not to hurt Abraham, Sarah, or Issac. God was not trying to trip Abraham up or nullify the Promise. Rather, God was continually refining Abraham, providing for the Promise, and showing Abraham how his faith had grown. We need to know that the outcome of Genesis 22 was never in question for God. God is sovereign, providential, and purposeful in all of His ways. When we can’t see the hand of God in the middle of our testing seasons, we must trust His heart! We must know that He is good and that His desire is to deepen our faith. This is why it is so important for us to run TO God during hard times with a trusting heart instead of AWAY from God because of a doubting heart. Always Worship in the Moment. (Genesis 22:2-5) The test was clear: “Take your son, your only son, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” (22:2). Can you imagine this moment in Abraham’s life? Abraham loved Issac, and the path to having Isaac was long and hard. Yet, when Abraham was called by God to go with the intent of sacrificing Issac, Abraham left early the next morning. Abraham took Isaac and his servants and traveled to Moriah. Once there, Abraham told the servants to stay put so he and Isaac could go and worship the Lord together. The Hebrew word for worship is Hawah meaning to prostrate oneself. This word denotes an act of respect before one superior in position and essentially signifies submission. The term is used especially in the sense of worshiping a deity and signifies to honor God with prayers. Worship provides the right perspective as we see God as God. Abraham knew that no matter what happened

Hawat Kasat has spent each moment of his life trying to leave the world a little better than he found it. He identifies as an Artist, Author, Educator, Yoga Instructor, Community Organizer, and Non-profit Leader; in our interview, however, he reveals that he most identifies with the label of Poet. In this episode, Hawah tells us about his experiences on the front-lines of social activism early in his life, as well as the time he spent in India learning how to meditate. Both sets of experiences - the political and contemplative - created a visionary leader who now runs One Common Unity, a non-profit he co-founded over 18 years ago that supports peace education and the building of a non-violent culture through music and art. We learn that the common threads in all of Hawah’s experiences are curiosity, consciousness and joy. And while he always feels like there is more to be done, there’s no question that he’s an example to us all for how to make a positive impact on the world. More Hawah: https://hawah.us

This is going to be controversial! Today we look at the classical and medieval understandings of woman as she relates to man. We do so by looking at the Genesis account and along the way we get into some dicey theology. If you’re a rock-ribbed feminist, you may want to stop reading here. Just sayin’. Thomas Aquinas locks horns with Aristotle on this issue of “woman as misbegotten male.” I think you’ll find this video especially interesting and helpful as you engage with others who argue that “The story of Adam and Eve is misogynistic!” You’ll also learn about Thomas Aquinas’ philosophy. As always, I look forward to the comments!!! By the way this video is the last of a series of NSTI videos that we’ve been releasing for the past two weeks from the New Saint Thomas Institute. Alert: TODAY (July 8) is the LAST DAY to sign up for the New Saint Thomas Institute. On Tuesday July 8 at 11:59pm the tuition will go from $37 to $47! This sale is only available for a few more hours. We will also close registration. If you join before 11:59pm July 8 you will get all the amazing bonuses worth (over $119), a tuition rate cut, and the Certificate in Theology. And you get a 21 day full money back guarantee! This sale will never be available again. If you’ve thought about joining the New Saint Thomas Institute, this is the day. Do it before 11:59pm July 8. Click here to sign up and get the tuition sale before 11:50pm Tuesday July 8. Here’s the video on: “Eve – Is Woman a Misbegotten Male? (Thomas Aquinas)” If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here. You can get videos like this every week through the New Saint Thomas Institute Here’s the mp3/audio version if you want to listen to it or download it: What does “Eve†mean? Eve comes from the Hebrew: חַוָּה‎, pronounced Havah or Hawah. Eve in the Hebrew language is ḤawwÄh, meaning: “living one†or “source of lifeâ€, and is related to ḥÄyâ, “to liveâ€. The name derives from the Semitic root ḥyw. Why the Rib? (STh I, q. 92, a. 3.) Thomas Aquinas gives this account: I answer that, It was right for the woman to be made from a rib of man. First, to signify the social union of man and woman, for the woman should neither “use authority over man,†and so she was not made from his head; nor was it right for her to be subject to man’s contempt as his slave, and so she was not made from his feet. Secondly, for the sacramental signification; for from the side of Christ sleeping on the Cross the Sacraments flowed–namely, blood and water–on which the Church was established. Aristotle on “Female as Misbegotten Male†Aristotle was a Greek philosopher before the time of Christ. He had been a student of Plato. Aristotle was brilliant and the rediscovery of Aristotle in the Middle Ages led to a renaissance in Christian, Jewish, and Muslim intellectual circles – especially in the fields of science. While the Church Fathers taught “immediate†conception, Aristotle taught a “delayed†conception. Consequently, Aristotle taught that “the female is a misbegotten male.†Aristotle, De Gener. ii, 3. Thomas Aquinas depends on Aristotle quite a bit, but not slavishly. Thomas frequently points out where and why Aristotle is wrong on hundreds of points. So it is interesting to see Thomas wrestle with Aristotle on the “status†of women in the scope of creation. Here’s the answer from Thomas Aquinas (it’s in more detail in the video lesson): “Reply to Objection 1. As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten, for the active force in the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of woman comes from defect in the active force or from some material indisposition, or even from some external influence; such as that of a south wind, which is moist, as the Philosopher observes (De Gener. Animal. iv, 2). On the other hand, as regards human nature in general, woman is not misbegotten, but is included in nature’s intention as directed to the work of generation. Now the general intention of nature depends on God, Who is the universal Author of nature. Therefore, in producing nature, God formed not only the male but also the female.†STh I, q. 92, 1, ad 2. Here’s how Thomas understands it: From the Aristotelian point of view of philosophical act and potency, an embryonic female is just a little less actualized (XX chromosome) than a male (XY). But Thomas says, “on the other hand,†from the biblical Judeo-Christian point of view woman is NOT a misbegotten male. She is integral to the fabric of creation. Question: So let’s get the comments rolling! What do you think? Does Thomas handle this appropriately? Does he not go far enough? You can leave a comment by clicking here.
