Ep 463 - Working Towards Ending Genocide Guest: Dr James Smith By Stuart McNish “More than 60% of the population of Rwanda was born after the genocide in 1994. They feel its effects, but have little knowledge of what caused it to happen,” says Dr. James Smith of Aegis Trust. The ravages of genocide tear familes, communities and societies apart. Smith adds, “It takes decades of reconciliation, peace-building and support to repair the damage done, and constant vigilance to ensure it does not happen again.” Central to ensuring it doesn't happen again is the need to help people who have no concept of peace or how to plan to start to envision a future. Dr. Smith says, “The victims of genocide spent years focused on the minutes ahead of them, relying on their wits to stay alive. Tomorrow, next week, next month never existed, so there was no need to plan or work toward a better future.” Since 2008, Aegis' peace-building education program has reached thousands of young Rwandans – a “Peace Education” program that is changing attitudes and behaviour among students and their communities. We invited Dr James Smith from Aegis Trust to join us from Kigali, Rwanda for a Conversation That Matters about working toward the prediction, prevention and ultimate elimination of genocide. Now is the time for each person to develop true love, which is the origin and basic element of world peace. We all have to come to the point of interacting with each other with true love, knowing that this is the shortest route to attaining world peace. Any one of us who insults or is hostile to our neighbor cannot contribute to world peace or God's providence. The world of today is awash with problems. To stop the rush toward corruption and immorality and engrain in people the way of goodness, we need to establish a true sense of values and a corresponding standard of universal morality. We have to call together all people of conscience and deep faith and educate them to be the workers of true love of our eternal God, workers who can practice the true love of God and True Parents. Regardless of age or gender, so many people throughout the world today are starving for true love. In this episode, student Harris Siderfin (a member of the Visualising Peace project) explores the role that youth-focused storytelling can play in reducing conflict and promoting the building blocks of a peaceful society. His guest is Rob Burnet, founder and CEO of Shujaaz Inc, a multimedia youth platform based in Kenya that aims to help improve the lives and livelihoods of young people across East Africa. Among other activities, Shujaaz Inc distributes a free monthly comic, produces radio programmes, creates TV shows, and runs social media accounts based on the popular characters featured in its comics - using Sheng, a contemporary slang favoured by many young people in Kenya. The stories they tell across different media revolve around a 19-year old radio DJ and influencer, living on the outskirts of Nairobi. The DJ uses his media platform to bring young people together to talk about their experiences, the changes they want to make and the barriers that are standing in their way, spotlighting the stories of young ‘shujaaz' ('heroes') who are creating change in their lives. Addressing issues such as gender inequality, reproductive health, local government, human rights, fake news, and political violence, Shujaaz reaches over 9.1 million 15–24-year-olds across East Africa, connecting them with information, skills, and resources they need to take charge of their lives. The Television Academy has recognised the company twice, awarding two Emmys, one in 2012 and another in 2014. How does Shujaaz relate to peace-building? As Rob and Harris discuss, storytelling can lead to behaviour-change. The characters created by Shujaaz speak directly to young people, sharing alternative ways of thinking, opening up new possibilities, building shared identities, and challenging and shifting social norms. Research has shown that young people who engage with Shujaaz are more likely than their peers to use contraception, thanks to the role models they encounter via these media; that they translate the financial wisdom which Shujaaz characters share into tangible improvements in their own lives; and that they are better informed about the strategies used by gangs and terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab to recruit vulnerable young people to their cause - among many other benefits. These attitude and behaviour changes are fundamental in building a more secure, peaceful future for individuals and communities. 'Peace education aspires to enable students to become responsible citizens... who can deconstruct the foundations of violence and take action to advance the prospects of peace.' (Swiss Peace, 2021). This is exactly what Shujaaz does, in teaching young people to develop positive mindsets, support themselves, and embrace peaceful ideals. We hope you enjoy listening to Rob and Harris discuss Shujaaz's approach to storytelling as a powerful example of peace education. Quick Overview Dr. Brenes commends the quality, breadth and multiplicity of the Earth Charter, and he believes that its core of ethical principles is the most relevant to our times. As our generation's challenge lies in the cultural shift to overcome egocentrism, Dr. Brenes calls attention to universal responsibility, which resembles a bridge connecting human rights, duties and obligations. He explains how responsibility is a sense of consciousness, an awareness, and a willingness to act. He also elaborates on peace and sustainability as organic, holistic, and complex concepts. They are so deeply interrelated that Peace Education and Education for Sustainable Development become identical in Dr. Brenes' opinion.

Greetings Magical Souls!! My dear student RUBY began her own podcast, and interviewed me! Join us for Transmission #14 “Safety is BullShit” with & Ruby Freecon. Here is the magic that unfolded: Safety is BS. We’ll never feel safe enough to live our truth. And yet if we truly want to help move the conscious collective forward, we must live our truth, despite feeling unsafe. Join me and my dear Shamanic soul sister Briana for a conversation that dives deep beyond the paradigms of our current monarchy to uncover the reasons why we feel experience anxiety when we want to share our truth. In this episode, you’ll get a history lesson that will help you understand why we experience fear when we want to speak our truth, how your individual wounds are impacting our collective wound, the difference between feeling safe and feeling secure, and why living in your truth is the greatest contribution to our collective. Briana Lynn loves the human heart. She believes that within each of us, we possess all that we need. Her work as a soul coach is to support access to this infinite source. She coaches, teaches and lives the top ancient technologies and transformational journeys to get humans free of what has been slowing them down, standing in their way and sabotaging their life experience. NLP, family constellations, meditation, soulful movement and sacred ceremony of various traditions are the tools she weaves into her in-person and online courses, 1x1 sacred Initiation work, and guided journeys around the world. Briana found the convergence of her love for academia and esoterica in the deep study of ancient healing, celebration and rites of passage ceremonies. While she has sat with, researched, and prayed with Earth Traditions spanning Latin and North America, the deepest dive into this resurgence of Today's Ceremonialist comes from her own relationship with nature and spirit. She weaves this into the Re-Tribing Movement - Our Return, together as a community in an intentional and sacred way. “As the astronauts are tethered to the spaceship [so] they can float out in space, I have to be tethered to something or I will lose my mind. And what I'm tethered to is habit - I have to ground somewhere. So, I ground in my family and habits.” Jeff Leitner is the guy the UN calls when they don’t know what to do. Get it? Now imagine diving into a conversation with this incredible human being! In this podcast, Jeff plunges us into a thoughtful and honest conversation about the purpose and meaning of habits and how we can have great impact with just little daily investments that can improve the quality of your life and those you love.A leading researcher, writer, and speaker on unwritten rules, Jeff is the co-author of See Think Solve: A Simple Way to Tackle Tough Problems and has worked for the UN, U.S. Department of State, NASA, Harvard Medical School, TED, Dalai Lama Center for Peace + Education, and The GRAMMY Foundation, just to name a few.In this episode you'll hear about:Habits that help you recuperate and the importance of doing something to recuperate from -- otherwise it becomes an excess.Habits that improve the quality of your life over time: Like all investments, one small action one day doesn’t amount to much but do this for 20 years and the payoffs could be unimaginable.Habits that create impact in the world requires being who you are and investing in the small things that matter to you. Plus:Having trouble innovating and taking risks in your life? Maybe you can ask yourself: What am I tethered to that can allow me to float in the space of uncertainty? And:Feeling anxious in the face of uncertainty? Breaking your routine might mean you’ve violated a healthy habit, which makes you more anxious on your spacewalk.Until next time! Natalie Anderson is best known for being the season 29 champion of the CBS reality show, Survivor. However, fans of the show might be surprised to know that the struggles and stresses of being stranded on a deserted island paled in comparison to the turmoil Natalie faced while battling post-concussion syndrome (PCS) after being named soul survivor in San Juan Del Sur. While growing up in Sri Lanka during the Sri Lankan Civil War with her twin sister Nadiya (who also competed on Survivor), Natalie was always into playing sports. Specifically, Natalie swam, played rugby and threw the javelin in high school, but focused on rugby while studying at Fordham University in the Bronx, NY. This is where Natalie suffered her first diagnosed concussion (2007), which left her feeling hazy, sluggish and with headaches. Rugby was a club sport at Fordham and there were no athletic trainers covering their games, so there was no return to play protocol followed, but her symptoms subsided after about a week. It looks like they could have used insights from my man Dr. Robert Huggins at the Korey Stringer Institute (Episode 41) who was instrumental in implementing athletic training coverage for club sports at Sacred Heart University and UCONN. During our conversation we also talk about her recovery from an ACL injury she sustained while playing rugby during her senior season. This is where her interest in physical therapy and athletic training was sparked. While taking pre-requisites for graduate school in 2013, Natalie suffered concussion #2 when she closed the trunk of a car, forgetting there was a bike rack attached to it. This concussion left her with blurred vision, headaches, sensitivity to light and sound all of which lingered for close to a month. After this concussion, Natalie grew concerned over her future brain health, especially in regard to her future academic goals. Before this concussion, Natalie and her sister Nadiya competed on their first reality show together, which was the 21st season of The Amazing Race, after a friend submitted a video application in for them. They also competed in the 24th season All-Stars edition of the show. School was put on hold while filming these shows so when the decision was finally made to attend Seton Hall University and earn a masters degree in athletic training, the third and most recent concussion was that much more devastating. Natalie (Left), Twin Sister Nadiya (Right). Natalie utilized CrossFit training while preparing for competing on Survivor. During our interview, she gives partial credit to CrossFit and to her training partner, Sheila Barden (CrossFit Games Competitor) for her success on the show. However, her post-survivor training ultimately led to concussion #3 while standing up into a racked barbell after adjusting her knee sleeve. To make matters worse, she was in grad school at this time and was actually struck in the head by a soccer ball while taping an athletes ankle during her first clinical emersion at a local high school. This was all while still symptomatic from the training accident. Natalie is a survivor through and through and credits a lot of her success to her ability to push and persevere. Unfortunately, the symptoms from these two concussions eventually became too much to handle, even with assistance from disability services at school (any athlete struggling with PCS should seek out this type of help from their school, it is your right). Natalie teaches us how to utilize the support of disability services at schools in this episode. After receiving a text from her classmate and good friend, Pete saying "A Champion Knows When To Rest," Natalie decided to take a medical leave from school, but plans on re-enrolling this fall now that she is feeling better. Natalie about to hit some front squats! Like many athletes, the survivor mentality can work to both your advantage and demise at times. Sometimes you need to know when to wave the white flag and take care of yourself. Most of us don't have that voice in our head's, but sometimes we need a friend to be that voice. Natalie found great help and symptom relief from utilizing the services from our Episode 14 guest, Dr. Mike Teytelbaum, who is a chiropractic neurologist. I encourage you to listen to this episode if you struggle with PCS. She also found hope emotionally through listening to many of the concussion related interviews on this podcast. Search "concussion" on the home page to find all episodes pertaining to concussions. Some other topics we cover include : Her winning strategy going into Survivor The weirdest thing she ate on survivor What she did with her winnings Donation to her mother's non-profit Bridge 2 Peace Mission: To empower the marginalized and under -privileged through Peace Education and Vocational Training based on Montessori principles. Background on the Sri Lankan Civil War Her parent's Romeo and Juliet story How the ketogenic diet benefited her PCS symptoms WHERE CAN YOU FOLLOW NATALIE ANDERSON? In the second of our conversation with Matt Meyer, he shares some insights on bringing peace education into the classroom. Professor Meyer explains, “If one understands, if one thinks about the power of love and the power of hate, the power of passion in one's own pedagogy, and in one's own life and movement building, then one will have access to a greater range of more powerful tools than if one was unconscious of these very important forces.” He continues, “If you go in with respect, with the truth, with your own honest self, no matter what you teach, you will most likely get it back from at least the vast majority of students you're teaching. And to me that says a lot, not just about how to become a good teacher, but how to become a good organizer and a good person.” Matt Meyer is a New York City-based educator, activist, and author, is coordinator of the War Resisters International Africa Support Network, and United Nations/ECOSOC representative of the International Peace Research Association. The audio from this interview is from a series of video reflections that were posted on the Ikeda Center YouTube page in Spring 2016.
