Christians Walk With One Step on Earth and the Other Touched by Heaven There is a marvelous oddness in the way God speaks to us today through the readings! On one hand God speaks to us in a way that stirs our heart with expectations. Even as that happens, the Lord will defeat those expectations that rise within us! It is not to disappoint us. It's to bring us beyond our expectations! We see this dynamic from the reading of the Prophet Isaiah. We hear about one who hears the Word of the Lord, hears His voice completely, and moves with specific expectations. He moves knowing there are difficulties waiting in front of him. He doesn't know yet what they are, but he knows they are in front of him. The one is not expecting difficulty. He knows difficulties await him! The Lord will send him somewhere. He is not expecting where the Lord sends him but knows He will. In the reading we hear he will not be put to shame regardless of what happens. He does not worry about the details. Hear more in the Homily. I Will Walk Before the Lord in the Land of the Living In the Psalms we hear I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. We may have expectations when we hear or read these words. We may think it's in the future and someplace else. Yet that is not how Christians should think! You are walking before the Lord in the land of the living . . . right now! When we enter into a Church, you are walking in the land of the living and participating in heaven within the Church right now! Heaven is not some place for later. We could recreate the Garden of Eden from whence we were out-cast… We could indeed become the Beloved Community and forge A More Perfect Union, on earth as it is in Heaven… There really could exist a reality in tangible form where “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” It could be possible…here in America. But White folk would have to repent of White Supremacy. Not just pass some legislation to grant Black people a few more rights until they take them away. Not just to add more Black people to their boards of directors. Not to do any of the myriad acts they could do and should do… But to repent of White Supremacy… Yet how will that ever happen unless Black folk compel them to repent? Will White people ever be able to read the Story of the Exodus - of the Hebrew people in slavery, in Egypt, and see themselves as the oppressor? Will White people ever be able to read the Exodus and see themselves as the Egyptians, unless compelled to do so by Black Prophetic witness to the Gospel? Some folk wonder why I work with White folk on extricating White Supremacy from their sphere’s of influence. I guess it’s because I want to be able to say to the Lord at Judgment time that I tried to love my errant White brothers and sisters unto righteousness. I want to be able to say that I tried to present an example of Blackness restored to the imago Dei in which we were created in the Beginning. Blackness that has godly power to compel whiteness to at last submit to the Will of God. What is the “belovedness” of the community we wish to see? So long as we live in America, intermingled with White people, what is the vision for Beloved Community? And how is it achieved? In this episode of Blacks with Power, Pr. But there's also gonna be another group, which is what God calls the great multitudes. Those are going to be the followers of Christ, those who are faithful to the end. But the way I see the 144,000 is there going to be 12 groups of 12 tribes of Israel. I just look at them as heroes." Family Discussions: What can you do today to be a hero to somebody in your life that needs a role model to follow?  If somebody looks at you, do they see a man or woman who's walking and following the lamb wherever he goes?  Transcription: 00:14          Do you know that there's going to be two different groups of people in Heaven? Unfortunately today, one of the cults - the Jehovah's Witness Cult teachers, that there's only gonna be 144,000 people in heaven. That's it. And so there is a fight to see who can do the most good deeds so they can become one of the 144,000. Can you imagine living your life knowing that that's all that we're going to get to heaven? Well they haven't read their scripture clearly because there are going to be a group of 144,000 in heaven. But there's also gonna be another group, which is what God calls the great multitudes. Those are going to be the followers of Christ, those who are faithful to the end. But the way I see the 144,000 is there going to be 12 groups of 12 tribes of Israel. I just look at them as heroes.   01:05          Listen to what scripture says about the 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel in Revelation chapter 14 verses three and four. It says this, "and they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders and no one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been purchased from the earth. These are the ones who've been not defiled with women, for they have kept himself at chased. These are the ones who follow the lamb wherever he goes." Isn't that great? "These are the ones who follow the lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among men as the first fruits of God. And to the lamb."   01:48          Even the 144,000 have to be purchased of the blood of the lamb. But I just see them as heroes and I don't know if that's the way God sees it, but it's the way I see it. And I love the passage. "They're the ones who follow the lamb wherever they go." Who's your hero by the way? Who are the people on this earth that you look up to? Well, for me, it's not the gigantic business. You know, guys, the successful, you know, Donald Trump's and Bill Gates. It's certainly not the ones who flesh trophies around after winning gigantic Olympic championships or sports championships. To me, it's the folks who follow the lamb wherever he goes. You know who my hero is? He's a boy named Johnny Stallings. Johnny was born with down syndrome and Johnny lived 46 years, even though the doctors told him that he was only gonna live for four months. When Johnny died a couple of summers ago, I went down to visit with his dad, Gene Stallings, who's one of my very best friends and coach took me to Johnny's room.   02:50          And you know what? There wasn't one trophy in his room, although Johnny had been given dozens of trophies because he was the most likable person that you've ever met. When we traveled with his dad for these coaching to teams all over the country. They'd give Johnny all these great trophies, but Johnny would give them away. They'd given footballs with signatures that were worth, you know, thousands of dollars, I suppose, of some of the greatest players that ever lived. And Johnny would go outside and he'd give it away to somebody else. Johnny was a hero and as Coach Stalling, said, you know, the kid, he never had an impure thought. He never had an impure word. Somehow this kid couldn't count to 10, but he never forgot your name. And he had a smile that would melt the ice caps.   03:33          You know who a hero is? A hero is a dad. Who would you look at his son or daughter. And you say, tell me about your dad and that son or daughter says, my dad is the purest man I know. My dad is a godly man. That man is my hero. There's heroes all over this planet. They're in every home in America. There are kids who are walking into the school and standing firm for Christ. There are university students who are walking across their campus and when they graduate, there are dozens of people following Christ because of their life. Well, the heroes of the Bible are 12,000 from 12 tribes of Israel, but the heroes of the earth are the multitudes who are following Christ. And my question for you today is this, what can you do today to be a hero to somebody in your life that needs a role model to follow? And if somebody looks at you, do they see a man or woman who's walking and following the lamb wherever he goes? What a great challenge. What a great way to live.

Great is the Mystery We Confess: Christ has Died Christ is Risen Christ will come again. Lent is a season of joy! Because we are drawing near to God. Lent is a season of joy! Because Christ is Risen! When Hope Breaks Through John 20:1-9 Easter Sunday is the Promise of New Life Resurrection Power is available to all for personal transformation Three Big Problems facing people today: Meaninglessness “You Don't Have to Be Neurotic to Feel Insecure: Finding the Courage to Deal With Guilt, Meaninglessness and Despair” by Reginald Stackhouse, Ph.D Empty Senseless Useless Worthless Pointless Inconsequential Purposeless Hollow Trivial Futile This was my condition before Christ. Guilt: This universal human condition. God has hardwired us to know right and wrong Shame Self-reproach Disgraced Alienation Anger (caused by disappointed expectations) Road Rage Domestic Violence Pew Rage Low grade disgusted with people and life in general because of your disappointed expectations. I. The People: A. Mary Magdalene - Meaninglessness Luke 8:2, doesn’t tell us much but that she was demon possessed Possession was looked upon as disease, this victim of an alien and evil power, not an accomplice of it. (ISBE) Whatever we may know of her can be summed up as: A great sufferer relieved A great sinner purified. She came into the circle of believers, marked out from the rest by an exceptional experience of the Lord's healing power. B. Peter – Guilt Jesus’ first words to Peter, “Follow me…” When Jesus entered Peter’s life, this plain fisherman became a new person with new goals and new priorities. He had found Christ to be the Messiah. He knew the Son of God. He boasted in his devotion. And when under pressure, denied even knowing Christ. C.  John – Anger Mark 3:17, "sons of thunder" Rebuking one who cast out devils in the Lord's name because he was not one of their company (Luke 9:49); Wants to call down fire from heaven upon a village of the Samaritans (Luke 9:54); Joined with his mother and James in asking for the highest places in the kingdom of the Master (Matt 20:20-28; Mark 10:35-45); John was the only disciple present at the crucifixion and was appointed by Jesus to care for Mary (19:26-27). II. The Problem Hope had died Mary’s Meaning in Life was dead Peter’s last words about His Master were words of denial. John, this son of thunder, who would lean on Jesus like a dear friend or even a little child, appears to have his expectations disappointed again. III. When Hope Breaks Through The Silence of Heaven There were no angels, no songs, no flashes of lightening. Only silence. It is so non-descript. There is no poetic beauty to it. There are no bold descriptions. No Angels singing in festive choir. Only Silence Hope had broken through. Death had lost its grip. It is all so silent. So alone. How else could it be? When something this grand, this magnificent, this glorious took place only the deafening silence of heaven and earth could declare the grandeur of this moment. There was no chorus worthy. There were no words adequate. There was only silence. There were no choruses of angels. There were no shepherds in rapturous wonder. There were no wise men poised with gifts. What else but silence would do for this event? Then the silence was broken with a simple declaration: He is not here. He is risen! Hope Breaks Through! Hope Breaks Through the Tyranny of Death Hope Breaks Through the Meaninglessness of Life with God Hope Breaks Through the Torment of Guilt Hope Breaks Through the Bondage of Anger Empty promises, empty dreams, empty lives, empty days, empty pleasures; none of these satisfy. But the empty tomb, now that satisfies. The Easter Sermon of John Chrysostom Is there anyone who is a devout lover of God? Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival! Is there anyone who is a grateful servant? Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord! Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord! First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together! Sober and slothful, celebrate the day! You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden! Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one. Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith. Enjoy all the riches of His goodness! Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the kingdom has been revealed. Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free. He has destroyed it by enduring it. He destroyed Hades when He descended into it. He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh. Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with. It was in an uproar because it is mocked. It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed. It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated. It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive. Hell took a body, and discovered God. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see. O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated! Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down! Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice! Christ is Risen, and life is liberated! Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever.
