This week we talk to David Vertesti – known for his incredible musical prowess as the bassist of Hey Ocean, he has also been a cornerstone in the Vancouver Arts and Music scene. He created a beautiful event called Sing It Forward, performing at events of the likes of the Junos and was also the creative spirit behind the Vancouver Mural Festival. And he has also walked away from those creative endeavours. He has a really refreshing relationship with what it takes (read: all consuming!) to start something. Since the birth of his first child, he has realized that his brain never truly turns off and in order to be fully present, he had to decide where to spend his time. Despite COVID-19 derailing the Mural Festival in it’s original intent, he still found a way to bring it to life in 2020, creating arguably one of the most successful art expos of the pandemic. We are grateful for his perspective of letting go to create room for something new – even when you have no idea what that newness will be. If you're struggling with alcoholism and addiction, you know how cruel sleep can be. Likewise, if you're struggling with sobriety, you know just how cruel sleep can be, too. There's no happy medium. Many routines over many years have to be built. Paul has had a contentious, ugly relationship with sleep for nearly six years after getting sober. In this episode, Sean and Paul discuss sleep habits, dream imagery in songs, and Paul's addiction to Ambien. They also share songs by Hey Ocean!, Youth Lagoon, M83 and Explosions in the Sky.(Drop the Needle does not own or claim ownership of any music used in this podcast. All rights go to original owner.)

David Beckingham drops by the doorless studio to talk about his band's reunion. Hey Ocean! (with exclamation mark) is coming back with a tour and a new album. This after each of the three main players released their own solo work. David tells us why the band needed to take a break, does an impression of his 8-year-old British self, and reminisces about life in Kenya. He's too young to remember the movie or song Born Free, though.
