It's one of the longest episodes of the show ever, and how could it not be when we're discussing an album that so perfectly captures the strange gap period between nu-metal's brief dominance and butt rock's eventual takeover, Saliva's "Every Six Seconds". It's clear this was a band that was unashamedly shooting for the rafters of stadiums, going so far as to write a 90s alt-rock jangle-pop song in the middle of an album that also has "Click Click Boom" on it, a song clearly designed to be on movie soundtracks. A band that got famous by doing everything they could to become famous, we look at some of the more insane lyrics the genre has ever featured, we learn they got their start by coming second in a Grammys-sponsored nationwide battle of the bands (?), and it appears that if they had their way, they actually might've been a Christian band (???). Hey, it's just a secular world, man, and we're all living in it. If you want to live in our POD Kast world, you can head on over to patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month will get you THREE bonus episodes every single month! Last month, John's Blocked Party partner Stefan Heck returned to the show to discuss "Nightmare Revisited", a remixed version of the "Nightmare Before Christmas" OST that goes on far, far too long and includes far, far too many strange bands. We also have merch discounts, an exclusive Discord, AND you can tell us what to do for a bonus episode! So check it out and support the show today!

The Road to Autonomy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 18, 2023 44:47

Stefan Heck, Founder & CEO, NAUTO joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss how NAUTO's predictive-AI software is helping to reduce distracted driving. The conversation begins with Stefan discussing what he saw in the market when he founded the company in 2015 and what he learned from collision data. There is nothing as dangerous as distracted driving. – Stefan HeckAccording to NAUTO's propriety data, on average, a commercial driver is distracted 7 times per driving hour, equating to roughly every 9 minutes. To help mitigate the distracted driving risk and reduce potential crashes, the NAUTO system monitors drivers behaviors and offers audio cues to gain the drivers attention. With-in the first week of using NAUTO, about 80% of all the distractions and nearly 100% of the severe long distractions are eliminated. – Stefan HeckThe system acts as a virtual coach that keeps drivers engaged while driving, giving them feedback in real-time on their driving behavior. The feedback comes in the form of a virtual coach that inspires change. When a driver realizes that their behavior as dangerous, they are more likely to change that behavior. In the data NAUTO has seen 80% to 90% of the drivers drop their risk behavior based on feedback from the virtual coach. This virtual coach, predictive-AI system is able to identify potential dangerous scenarios because it has been trained on 3 billion miles with over 200,000 high-risk driving events. The accuracy of all of these interventions is really important. There's nothing as upsetting as telling you, hey there is a bicycle here and there is no bicycle. Or you are tailgating and there is nobody in front of you. So, we spent years making sure that all of detectors, all of our interventions are super accurate. – Stefan HeckIf the system is not accurate, drivers will begin to distrust the system and figure out a way to turn it off. This behavior is common amongst individuals who own vehicles with lane-keep assist. They simply turn it off because it's inaccurate and annoying. A system that is accurate is a system that works and does it job to help avoid dangers driving scenarios. NAUTO's system caught the attention of Stellantis, as the company invested with a plan to offer the system in their commercial fleet vehicles. At first the system will use the NAUTO hardware and in the future, the software system will run natively on the vehicles by leveraging the on-board sensors without the NAUTO hardware. In addition to Stellantis, NAUTO has a partnership with Brightdrop where fleets can order can order the system pre-installed directly from the factory today. As robo-taxis scale around the world, the NAUTO system could be used for occupant detection and safety routing applications. As autonomy grows, NAUTO's market grows. Wrapping up the conversation, Stefan shares his opinion on the future of AI as it relates to mobility.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Wednesday, July 5, 2023See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's been awhile since we last saw you, and we're thrilled you're back again for another episode of the P.O.D. Kast! This month, it's all about one of nu-metal's most divisive bands, Staind. A band that Bryan hated and John liked, the division in age between Bryan and John becomes clear as Bryan was fully moving away from nu-metal in 2001 when this album came out, and John was fully entrenched. Wherever you stand on the age line might determine how much you liked it, but one thing is certain: in 2020, it isn't great.   We dive into more of nu-metal's weird history with this band, from Fred Durst nearly kicking Staind off of his tour due to an objectionable album cover to eventually signing them and becoming their "dad", to Aaron Lewis' redneck beginnings (and endings--guy is a Trump country artist now). This album contains multitudes, an $800,000 production budget with songs directly aimed at topping the charts mixed in with paint-by-numbers nu-metal and some songs that still hit pretty hard if they get you at the right moment. Staind was the sound for 2001, a bridge between the nu-metal monsters they toured with and the butt rock juggernauts that were soon to follow, and we get into their entire complicated history right here.   If you want some more complicated history, you can head on over to https://patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you access to a great bonus episode every month AND our entire back catalogue of bonuses. Last month, we had our great friends Stefan Heck and Brett Payne on to discuss Korn: Unplugged, and this month, it's a nu-metal superpod (that's what you call the supergroup of podcasts), as we get together with our friends in Roach Koach to discuss a truly awful Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003 soundtrack. We also introduced a new tier this month, where a $20 donation gets you a personalized review of any nu-metal song, and of course for $50, you can tell us what album to do for a bonus episode. It's all there, we hope you join us!

As with previous innovations, productivity opportunities will propel economic growth and society will adapt to it sooner or later.   In this episode of The Better Question podcast, EYQ Fellow Chris Meyer is joined by Stefan Heck, CEO of Nauto, and Eduardo Potter, New York Times economics writer.

Advancement in AI and ML technology is helping the industry get one step close towards an automated future. In this episode of Greymatter, we share a panel discussion from Greylock's Future of Transportation event. Greylock's Reid Hoffman, Aurora co-founder and CEO Chris Urmson and Nauto founder and CEO Stefan Heck discuss the opportunities and challenges, including driver insurance and the digital divide, and the importance of working closely with policy makers and OEMs as we transition to autonomous vehicles. Aurora and Nauto are building software needed to build and scale autonomous vehicles safely. Prior to founding Aurora, Chris helped found the self-driving car team at Alphabet and led the team for seven years. Stefan was the co-architect of the sustainability practice at McKinsey and taught courses on energy and transportation innovation at Stanford before starting Nauto. Greylock's invite-only event hosted CEOs, company founders, and top industry leaders to discuss the impact of technology on the transportation landscape and the role of autonomy over the next several decades. Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Fully automated vehicles promise a new era in car safety, but completely self driving cars on roads are still in the future. With this in mind, Nauto is rethinking transportation by using AI technology to learn how to best equip automated vehicles for a future of safe and trusted transportation.  In this episode of Greymatter, Nauto CEO Stefan Heck and Greylock partner Reid Hoffman discuss a blended environment with humans and machines, the evolution of road infrastructure, and the impact of AI on human jobs. The two visionaries also share advice on how startups can successfully partner with large companies and enterprises.

Today’s two billion middle class consumers will more than double globally over the next two decades. But while cities in China, India and other developing countries will be teeming with citizens in need of housing, cars and electronic gadgets, natural resources are dwindling. The silver lining? Consumer demand has sparked a third industrial revolution - one that is driving massive innovation, from Teslas to smart meters to less wasteful building methods. How are companies adapting to meet the demands of a changing world? Matt Rogers co-authored “Resource Revolution: How to Capture the Biggest Business Opportunity in a Century.” “If you see two and a half billion new people entering the middle class, you say, my goodness, we are going to run out of resources,” says Rogers. But in researching the book, he says, they found enormous potential instead. Changing the way we both produce and use resources, Rogers adds, will avert the economic and environmental disasters that seem to threaten us. “Companies and technologies are in fact changing fast enough,” concludes Rogers. “It's going to be one crazy ride for the next 20 years, but…we’re going to end up in a very good place.” This program was recorded in front of a live audience at the Commonwealth Club of California on June 9, 2014. John Hofmeister, Former President, Shell Oil Company Amy Myers Jaffe, Executive Director, Energy and Sustainability, UC Davis Graduate School of Management Matt Rogers, Director, McKinsey & Co.; Co-Author (with Stefan Heck), Resource Revolution: How to Capture the Biggest Business Opportunity in a Century (New Harvest, 2014)
