Nick Corasaniti is the author of "I Don't Want to Go Home: The Oral History of the Stone Pony." This is what Michael really wanted to talk to the New York Times correspondent about, as they both share a love of music, especially live music. So yes, listen to a great conversation about that to start, but then, the actual reason Nick comes to talk is on his NY Times piece "The Death of Competition in American Elections." He says a vast majority of 2024 races for Congress and state legislatures were decided by low-turnout or meaningless primaries. It is not a great trend - but a great opportunity here to listen and learn. Original air date 27 February 2025.
This week we go back once again to Christmas and New Year's and then we'll be all caught up. Yes, Christmas at Rachel Feinstein's - a hilarious sentence. Listen to what happened when I bought the daughter of the New York City Fire Chief a pack of matches as a xmas gift. HIGHlarious! (or was it?). Also, spending multiple nights at my new home in New Jersey - the Jon Bon Jovi Rest Area on the Garden State Parkway; going to the Stone Pony to see my friend play in his band, The Rachets; and the movie Heretic with the legendary Hugh Grant. How was it? I'll let you know as we continue the 2025 Juskow in the City Podcast!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, transforms into Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me from Nowhere, capturing the making of Springsteen's iconic 1982 album Nebraska. Filming has brought the Jersey Shore back to the '80s, with Asbury Park hotspots like the Stone Pony and Carousel House getting retro makeovers. Scenes feature White belting Little Richard's “Lucille” and iconic locations like Frank's Deli and Montclair Library. Directed by Scott Cooper and starring Jeremy Strong as manager Jon Landau, this 20th Century Studios film promises a 2025 release. With concert scenes ahead, it's a must-watch homage to The Boss.

Welcome to our third installment of the Officially Unofficial New Jersey Is the World book club. This time, Andrea and Kerri read Welcome Home, Caroline Kline. It's a very Jersey book about a young woman who–in the middle of some life upheaval–returns to her hometown to fill in for her dad on the local men's softball league. It features everything we love here: Jersey families, Jersey music, the Jersey shore, Jersey bagels. It's seriously all in there. And we were so lucky to talk with the book's author, Courtney Preiss. We talked about writing characters who feel SO real, representing Asbury Park and The Stone Pony, creating the world's most Jersey mascot, and so much more. It's a great conversation about a really great book. Excited for folks to hear this episode and to read Welcome Home, Caroline Kline.More info about Welcome Home, Caroline KlineKeep up with Courtney Preiss: @cocogolightlyFind your local indie bookstore:https://www.indiebound.org/indie-store-finder Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.

“Sperduto” is Italian for “lost” – but not just regular-lost. We're talking, middle-of-nowhere, no-GPS-signal, completely and hopelessly lost. Mollie Sperduto is a freckle-faced, red-haired Italian who spent her 20s living in a retirement community – and that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how “Sperduto” her life truly is. Nothing can simply be done in a normal way with her. Mollie enjoys sharing details and stories of her life at shows all around the Northeast (and occasionally beyond!), having appeared at independently-produced shows at Greenwich Village Comedy Club, New York Comedy Club, and Broadway Comedy Club, along with countless other restaurants, theaters, fundraisers, country clubs, and private/corporate parties. She has opened for Jim Breuer, Bonnie McFarlane, and many others, and was a finalist in the Tropicana Comedy Competition in Atlantic City. She is also a talented, engaging MC, both in and out of the comedy circuit, and has had the pleasure of playing host in shows and events at the Strand Theater in Lakewood, as well as the Stone Pony in Asbury Park.
It's the Season 4 premiere of Juskow in the City and welcome back everyone. Today on the podcast, a day at the races and two concerts; also a trip to Roosevelt Island, my new awful classrooms on campus and the incredible Chinese food lunch I can't stop looking at pictures of. It's also my first time at the legendary Springsteen house of worship, The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Stone Pony and its hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey are iconic settings in the story of some of America's greatest rock musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, and Southside Johnny Lyon. The Pony's path from high-risk passion project to iconic venue was, however, anything but direct; from its founding in 1974, the club was caught in the greater forces at work in late-20th century America. So how did the Stone Pony thrive when so many other venues closed? And what set Asbury Park apart from so many other American towns? In this episode, The New York Times' Nick Corasaniti joins us to talk about his new book I Don't Want To Go Home: The Oral History of the Stone Pony (Harpers, 2024) and what he learned from interviewing Bruce Springsteen and dozens of other musicians and industry professionals who helped make the club into what it is today. If you enjoy this episode, make sure to check out our episodes on The Kinks with Mark Doyle and The Allman Brothers' At Fillmore East with Bob Beatty. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.

Natalie reflects on the evolution of their music, from bluesy improvisations to the pop-influenced tracks on their latest EP, "Mantra." They emphasize the importance of live performances and the unique energy they bring to their shows.Looking ahead, Natalie and Lou express their aspirations for the future, including touring and creating new music that blends various genres. A captivating oral history of the iconic music venue the Stone Pony and of the rise, fall, and rebirth of Asbury Park, New Jersey-featuring interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt, Southside Johnny, members of the E Street Band and Asbury Jukes, the Ramones, the Jonas Brothers, Jack Antonoff, and other legendary musicians. In 1970, Asbury Park, New Jersey, was ripped apart by race riots that left the once-proud beach town an hour away from Manhattan smoldering, suffering and left for dead.Four years later, a few miles down the coast in Seaside Heights, two bouncers, Jack Roig and Butch Pielka, tired of the daily grind, dreamt of owning their own place. Under-prepared and minimally funded, the two bought the first bar they considered, in a city where no one wanted to be, without setting one foot in the place. They named it the Stone Pony, and turned it into a rock club that Bruce Springsteen would soon call home and a dying town would call its beating heart. But the bar had to fight to survive. Despite its success in launching and attracting rockers like Stevie Van Zandt, "Southside" Johnny Lyon, and Springsteen, the Stone Pony-like everything in Asbury Park for the past half century-could only weather the drags of a depressed city for so long. How did the Stone Pony beat the odds to survive? How did it become an international rock pilgrimage site, not just for fans of Springsteen, but for punk rockers, jam bands, pop, indie, alternative and many other musicians as well? And how did it continue to inspire and influence a hall-of-fame list of New Jersey and national rock stars? The story of the Stone Pony-thrillingly charted in this detailed oral history-is the chronicle of a proud and unique cultural mecca blooming in a down-but-not-yet-out tough town. As Nick Corasaniti reveals, the stories of Asbury Park and the Stone Pony are that of modern America itself-a place of battered hopes, big dreams, and dogged resilience.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

"Thank You, Goodnight" on Hulu, Jon Bon Jovi reflects on the band's 40th anniversary in 2022, preparing for a tour with an extensive three-week rehearsal, an unusual length compared to their typical four-day rehearsals. Jon shares his mixed feelings about the tour, oscillating between excitement and regret. Despite his successful career, Jon emphasizes that his passion for music drives him more than necessity. He recalls his non-musical upbringing, with his mother being a florist and his father a hairdresser, and how he developed an interest in music around the age of 12 or 13.Jon recounts his early struggles and determination, noting that he was never the best singer but had a strong work ethic that fueled his success. He mentions contemplating retirement in 2019 due to vocal issues, which he tried to address with multiple vocal coaches and medical treatments. Jon reminisces about sneaking into The Stone Pony in Asbury Park to watch performances by local legends like Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen, which inspired his own musical journey despite the initial lack of support for New Jersey artists.Jon shares his early experiences in the music industry, from the formation of his high school band, Atlantic City Expressway, to working as a gopher at the Power Station studio. He details the breakthrough with his song "Runaway," which, after being rejected by numerous record companies, became a hit on a new radio station, WAPP. This success led to his partnership with Richie Sambora, whose chemistry with Jon created magic. Jon and Richie's songwriting, particularly with hits like "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer," propelled Bon Jovi to stardom, culminating in their seminal album "Slippery When Wet."The documentary delves into the band's intense touring schedules and the personal and professional challenges they faced, including internal tensions and substance abuse issues. Jon reflects on the strain of constant touring and the need for band members to take breaks, leading to solo projects. He discusses the difficulties he faced with his voice and the subsequent surgery that required months of recovery, during which he questioned his future in music. Jon also recalls significant moments in the band's history, such as their manager Doc McGhee's legal troubles and their groundbreaking performance in Moscow.Despite the ups and downs, Jon emphasizes the band's resilience and evolving lineup, including the addition of Phil X as a guitarist when Richie Sambora left. The band's continued success, highlighted by their 2018 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, showcases their enduring legacy. The passing of original bassist Alec John Such in 2022 deeply affected Jon and the band, prompting reflections on mortality and the importance of their bond.In 2023, Jon faces new challenges with his voice but remains optimistic about his future in music. He highlights his commitment to philanthropy through the Soul Foundation and his ongoing creative endeavors, including plans for a new album. Despite considering retirement, Jon's passion for music and dedication to his craft continue to drive him forward, leaving the door open for future projects while expressing gratitude for his journey thus far.

The “funkalishous” Philadelphia band – SNACKTIME – took time from their busy tour schedule supporting Portugal. The Man to talk with us recently and the hour we spent chatting felt like only 10 minutes. During this very enjoyable conversation, Yesseh Furaha-Ali (vocals, alto sax, percussion) and Sam Gellerstein (sousaphone) shared backstories aplenty about the band's history, their deep reservoir of musical influences, how they built up their following and what it felt like performing on the Sand Stage at Sea.Hear.Now last year. Not satisfied with being defined by music alone, SNACKTIME is a heavy hitter with giving back to the community, supporting those in need and modeling a lifestyle based on spreading love and positivity. Tune in today to become hooked on a sound so unique, that it's impossible to compare this band to any other. And as great as their music is ... we promise that their live show will knock your socks off and shake you to the core. Make sure you catch them opening for Portugal. On December 9, 2023 … the New Jersey punk rock band Free The Witness will unveil their latest studio release, Youth of Tomorrow produced and mixed by Pete Steinkopf of punk rock veterans The Bouncing Souls, and mastered by Doug Gallo. Already streaming on all platforms is the EP's white-hot lead single, also titled “Youth of Tomorrow.” Potent, high-level energy explodes from the outset and continues through with powerful vocals, heavy hitting drums and insanely technical guitar work.Vocalist/guitarist Jake Bédel-Franklin and Bassist Kyle Crowley stopped by the APV Studio to chat about the band's new direction with Youth of Tomorrow and how they're maturing and gelling as a group. They spoke about their deliberate choices when crafting the new EP to show progressive growth in their music and insightful commentary through their lyrics. We also touched upon a lot of stories about their beginning years in the music industry.Free The Witness has played the Punk in Drublic festival alongside NOFX and Face to Face. They've opened for Rise Against, The Descendents, Flogging Molly, Sum 41 and The Interrupters; and have headlined The Stone Pony. Last week the opened for Teenage Bottlerocket at House Of Independents. Listen to our latest podcast with Free The Witness all the way to the end to hear special bonus content!
Artist Sam Grinberg started interning with The Simpsons in 2014. It turned into an actual job shortly after--a dream job! He joins us today to discuss the popular show, its possible ska connections and his own history with the genre. He's got a lot of history with ska. Sam grew up in New Jersey and used to go see tons of bands like Streetlight Manifesto and local legends Awful Waffle. He even drops some super obscure local ska band names on us like Stolen Oregano, Explosive Sheep, and The Nerd Who Ate St. Louis. Sam has also done a lot of artwork for ska bands. A short list includes Catbite, Kill Lincoln, Less Than Jake, Save Ferris, The Holophonics, the Too Hectic comps on Pay Attention Records (By Phil Lucas-Smith of Ska Punk Daily) and more. (He even did art for the Hella Mega Tour, which featured Fall Out Boy). Plus Sam talks about his other artwork like the Scumburbia series and his infamous "How To Skank" comic. We also learn how Sam got a job at The Simpsons, how he defines his art style, and how many tattoos people have gotten of his artwork. He talks about seeing Fatter Than Albert, Bomb The Music Industry and going to many shows at The Starland Ballroom and the Stone Pony. Plus he talks about going to the "It's a Ska World After All" at Disneyland. And we learn that one of his art teachers was Gary Panter, who created the characters for Pee Wee's Playhouse. And we discuss ska bands with Simpsons references and the ultimate Simpsons-themed metal-core band: Okilly Dokilly. A jam-packed episode! Support the show

Fervent fans of The Doughboys know their whole history, detailed on the Rock N' Raw DVD – they first got together in ‘64 and played in various permutations through the rest of the 60's. They gigged incessantly, won a battle-of-the-bands on Zacherle's Disc-o-Teen TV show, were the house band at the legendary Café Wha? in New York City in the summer of '68. They opened for every act imaginable including The Beach Boys, and released two 45's, Rhoda Mendelbaum and Everybody Knows My Name, on Bell Records (which later became Arista Records) before splitting up for what they thought was for good. The band members went their separate and interesting ways – Myke Scavone fronted hard rock ensemble Ram Jam who scored an international hit with Black Betty; Richie Heyman played drums for the likes of Link Wray, Brian Wilson and Jonathan Richman while simultaneously pursuing an acclaimed career as a singer/songwriter (under his full moniker Richard X. Heyman); Mike Caruso landed session work with such notable pop producers as Bo Gentry and Kenny Laguna, and even jammed with Jimi Hendrix!Mike CarusoSince the band re-formed in 2000 at a surprise birthday party for drummer Richie Heyman's birthday, The Doughboys have released six albums (Is It Now?, Act Your Rage, Shakin' Our Souls, Hot Beat Stew, Front Street Rebels and Running For Covers), numerous singles, and a documentary film with accompanying live disc (Rock N' Raw). They've played up and down the eastern half of the country, often sharing bills with such luminaries as The Pretenders, The Yardbirds, The Electric Prunes, Roberta Flack, Robin Trower and many others. They performed at the historic “Who Shot Rock n' Roll?” exhibition at the Allentown Museum, at an all-star tribute to George Harrison at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, at the “Long May You Run” benefit at The Hamilton Live in Washington, DC, and have appeared at prestigious venues like B.B. King's, the Sellersville Theater, the Stone Pony and the Starland Ballroom. Lead singer Myke Scavone is now also a member of The Yardbirds, touring the world as they continue to spread the gospel of the golden era of Rock n' Roll.In 2005, Gar Francis (of Stones tribute band Sticky Fingers fame, as well as work with Billy Idol and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and The Raiders) entered the picture after the untimely passing of founding member and brilliant guitarist Willy Kirchofer. When Gar joined the band, The Doughboys branched out into recording their own original material, and it wasn't long before they entered the recording studio and laid down tracks for Is It Now?, the first album of their long and storied career. The Doughboys' songs have become huge favorites on radio around the world, especially with Little Steven Van Zandt, who named Shakin' Our Souls his favorite album of 2012, and who has bestowed the much sought after rank of “Coolest Song In The World” on eight of The Doughboys' songs on his Underground Garage channel on Sirius/XM radio. Additionally, Doughboys music is used extensively in film, television and advertising, including in such TV shows as “The Big Bang Theory”, “Californication,” “Breaking Amish” and “The Good Guys” and in the film “Coming Through The Rye.”

Welcome to Anchored in Asbury, a monthly music interview podcast that revolves around the rich musical culture of Asbury Park, New Jersey. Each month, host Bill Bodkin (editor-in-chief of ThePopBreak.com) talks with musicians, promoters, and people behind the scenes about their journeys in the music industry and how Asbury Park has been and is such a vital part of it. The podcast is hosted by Bill Bodkin, editor-in-chief of ThePopBreak.com, who not only has covered the Asbury Park music scene for 19 years but produced and sponsored live shows throughout the city for the past decade. This month's episode features Ed Maier. Ed is the current co-owner of the legendary venue Nectar's in Burlington. He is also a partner in the new company Nectar's Presents, which is a concert promotion and talent buying company. In Bill's conversation with Ed, Ed discusses his early days of following Phish around the country and how that led him home to New Jersey to start booking and promoting first in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey then the short-lived Chico's House of Jazz in Asbury Park. Ed regales the podcast with stories of bringing bands like The Hip Abduction and RIPE to Asbury Park, putting thousands on the beach as a part of Jams on the Sand and eventually becoming involved with a venue that's as synonymous with Phish as Bruce Springsteen is to the Stone Pony. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Host Will Dailey takes you on a musical tour of Asbury Park, New Jersey: the working-class, seaside city Springsteen made famous. But there was an Asbury before Bruce—the Asbury that made Bruce—and its history isn't all sun and sand. It's also a story of racism, injustice, and deadly tides. But also an American story of survival, revival, and redemption. Get a glimpse of what happens backstage, under the boardwalk, and behind the music as Dailey unearths the ghosts of Asbury Park...as well as the people who have brought it rocking and roaring back to life. This episode I talk with Alice Genese & Shaune Pony Heath; two friends who would meet on Tuesdays to talk and informally play some music in their living rooms. Those meetings eventually became the band OV Stars. Alice talks to me about how she grew up a block from the legendary venue, Maxwell's, in Hoboken, NJ. She began her music career playing bass with Gut Bank and Sexpod. She eventually met up with Genesis P-Orridge and played bass for Psychic TV for the last 20 years.Shaune discusses growing up in Pretoria, South Africa and how the music scene was the ultimate in DIY, sometimes meaning you had to build your own stage from tires and soil,Alice and Shaune had written so much music together that recording was the obvious next step. Shaune tells me about being terrified but how being immediately thrown in the deep end didn't give him time to overthink the process. So go check out the OV Stars EP, Tuesdays, on Bandcamp. Follow them on all the socials. And if you happen to be in Asbury Park, NJ, stop by The Stone Pony and get one of Alice's Jell-O shots! She eventually met up with Genesis P-Orridge and played bass for Psychic TV for the last 20 years. Shaune discusses growing up in Pretoria, South Africa and how the music scene was the ultimate in DIY, sometimes meaning you had to build your own stage from tires and soil, Alice and Shaune had written so much music together that recording was the obvious next step.
