Captain John Parker is famously supposed to have said on Lexington Green, "If they mean to have a war, let it begin here." Even if the attribution is true, did the British or the Provincials mean to have a war in April of 1775? Join Professor Robert Allison (Suffolk University) as he explores the aftermath of the events of April 19, 1775 through the end of the year.Tell us what you think! Send us a text message!

Who is a provincial? In Provincials: Postcards from the Peripheries (Yale UP, 2024), Sumana Roy assembles a striking cast of writers, artists, filmmakers, cricketers, tourist guides, English teachers, lovers and letter writers, private tutors and secret-keepers whose lives and work provide varied answers to that question. Combining memoir with the literary, sensory, and emotional history of an ignored people, she challenges the metropolitan's dominance to reclaim the joyous dignity of provincial life, its tics and taunts, enthusiasms and tragicomedies. In a wide-ranging series of “postcards” from the peripheries of India, Europe, America, and the Middle East, Roy brings us deep into the imaginative world of those who have carried their provinciality like a birthmark. Ranging from Rabindranath Tagore to William Shakespeare, John Clare to the Bhakti poets, T. S. Eliot to J. M. Coetzee, V. S. Naipaul to the Brontës, and Kishore Kumar to Annie Ernaux, she celebrates the provincials' humor and hilarity, playfulness and irony, belatedness and instinct for carefree accidents and freedom. Her unprecedented account of provincial life offers an alternative portrait of our modern world. The trend of this podcast is that we host people who are better at golf and much better spoken than us - this episode is no different. What is different is that we have the first golf coach for Caledonia High in over a decade on this episode, David Lewis. He takes us through the experience of starting up the team, gathering support and players, and ultimately sending 5 of Terrace's best young golfers to Provincials. The story sounds awesome and rewarding, and we'll definitely be trying to find a way to support the team in their next season!
The college season wraps up as Danie and Theo recap UBC's run at college nationals. In the news section, they cover the upcoming Ultimate Canada Hall of Fame nominations, the new roster requirements for Team Canada at WUGC and recap multiple high school provincials happening across the country.

We talk to Seb Hunter - Author of the critically-acclaimed book 'Hell Bent for Leather' and guitarist for the band Provincials. Seb gives us a great insight into the background of this amazing book that took the chance in the early 2000's to shine a light on the overlooked and often hilarious struggles of aspiring musicians, seduced by the charms of American Rock Bands of the late 80s, who gave it their best shot in the tough music industry of the UK. Seb revisits the early conception of the book, his journey into his attempt to make the film adaptation of the KISS album 'Music From The Elder' as well as a glimpse into what a sequel to 'Hell Bent For Leather' may well look like. This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee.https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STVPlease visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

When the Provincials get word that the British plan to occupy the no man's land at Bunker Hill and Dorchester Heights, they send Massachusetts and Connecticut militia to build defenses on Bunker Hill. The soldiers instead build the defenses on Breed's Hill, a smaller hill just next to Bunker Hill. The British take most of the following day moving regulars across Boston Harbor to attack the defenses with overwhelming force. The provincials use the extra time to reinforce and extend their defenses, but get no significant reinforcements all day. A cannon duel over the day accomplishes little except to show how amateurish and incompetent the provincial artillery really is. By late afternoon, British General William Howe is prepared to take the hill with overwhelming force. With the British army sitting in Boston, the navy needs to provide supplies and prevent supplies from reaching the Provincials. An attempt to capture a ship at Buzzard's Bay fails as locals overtake the small British task force and take them prisoner. Similarly, when the British send a ship to protect two merchant vessels providing firewood for Boston, locals again capure the ships. They kill several of the British and take the rest prisoner. In the first weeks of the Siege of Boston in 1775, the Provincial Army appears to be more of a disorganized mob than an army. Men do not obey officers. Units from one colony would not obey orders from another. No real chain of command exists. Further, the lack of uniforms, supplies, ammunition, and other logistical problems created their own problems. Soldiers on both sides begin to die from disease. The only real fighting at this time is over islands in Boston Harbor that contain food and hay. The Provincials attempt to remove or destroy items of value on Hog and Noddle Islands. When the British navy tries to stop them, a small battle leads to several casualties. The British navy ship Diana gets stuck in the mud during the fight. Overnight, the Provincials force the crew to abandon ship. The colonials loot and burn the ship in their first small victory over the navy. On this week's episode of The Throw-In, Will Slattery is joined by Tomás Ó Sé, Roy Curtis and Michael Verney to discuss all the weekend's football action. After three lopsided provincial final results, Ó Sé thinks it is time for the current structure to be revamped, and the Kerry legend is hoping that a two-tier championship structure is brought in. Donegal impressed in the Ulster final as they continued their trend of putting up a big score with their more offensive strategy, and the lads discuss the defensive approach that Fermanagh took in the game. For Dublin, they claimed their eighth consecutive Leinster title with an 18-point win over Laois, but were their a few chinks in their armour? Kerry's young stars continued their upward trajectory in a Munster final rout against Cork, and Ó Sé thinks that the less experienced players are now driving a lot of the top teams. The lads also discuss what happened to Cork, the third round qualifier draw and Mayo's ability to come back from the dead.
The end of May to around the end of July is a pretty hectic time in the Canadian track meet schedule. This past weekend I was in Hamilton for a twilight, this weekend I’ll be in London for Trackie Mania, then there’s the Inferno, 1,500m Night, Provincials, Nationals, the list goes on. This week on the Terminal Mile, we’re paying close attention to the track and its characters, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot joins us to talk about what’s coming up in his season, literally changing the way he runs in the pursuit of victory, and overcoming setbacks, but first, Scott Macdonald joins us to preview one of Canada’s only professional track meets, the Speed River Inferno with a HUGE announcement.

The smoke lifted through the air as the houses burned, undoubtedly seen across the border in Dutchess County, New York. Earlier that day 2,000 British soldiers, marching from Fairfield, Connecticut under the command of Willian Tryon, Royal Governor of New York and Major General of the Provincials, had arrived in Danbury. Searching for rebel weapons and supplies, they would start to mark the homes of Loyalists. It wasn’t just that were going to deprive the enemy of guns and food. No, they were going to send a message. The unmarked homes, homes of Patriots would be set on fire. As word reached Colonel Henry Ludington, commander of the local militia, fresh returned from a three-day ride with his troops to shore up supplies, a sinking feeling had to come over him. The Patriots had only recently moved their supplies to Danbury in the belief that they would be safe there. Now they gone. Worse yet though, the veteran of the French and Indian Wars had to know that it was only a matter of time before the British Army crossed the border. Had the 400 men under his command been assembled they could perhaps, at the very least, put up a fight. But they weren’t. They were furloughed, on leave at their homes, believing little, if nothing had changed. He had to gather the troops. Yet the messenger who brought word at about nine that evening didn’t know the terrain, not well enough to bring word to the men scattered throughout the county. No, this task had to fall on the shoulders of someone who knew the territory and terrain, someone who knew the homes and the families along the road. The task would fall on the shoulders of the oldest of Colonel Ludington’s eight children, the 16 year old Sybil. Fiercely independent, she had watched her father train and drill his soldiers, and felt her own patriotism to the cause grow. Brave beyond her years, she had often served as a sentinal for her father. More than that though she knew the countryside, well versed in the terrain and the towns a messenger would have to ride. She would be the only choice. As the rain fell amidst the thundering of that night on April 26th, 1777 she would mount her horse with her father’s musket at her side, and she would ride. She would ride hard into the night. The ground beneath would have been soft and murky, having stormed all day, but she wouldn’t let it slow her. Her route would take her as far south as Mahopac and then to the North to Stormville. A treacherous path, she not only would have to avoid loyalists, but also roaming bandits with no allegiance to either side of the war. Yet she would be undeterred and undaunted. Not even the attack of a highwayman she would have to fend off would stop her. As she reached Carmel yelling “The British are burning Danbury” the Church bells would ring the alarm. Knowing the treacherous road she faced one of the men of Carmel would offer to ride the rest of the route with her. She knew the territory, and she had no fear for what might come. Dispatching him to spread word to the East, with the words “Tell them to join my father at Ludington Mill”, she would continue alone. Even as she rode word would reach Tryon that the Revolutionary forces were on the move. By this point, having found supply of whiskey, order broke down as the British troops stumbled through the streets of Danbury, looting homes as the people of the town watched in horror. Knowing that it wouldn’t be long before General David Wooster, and General Benedict Arnold arrived from Bethel, Tryon ordered they burn even more of the houses. The sky would burn orange into the night as the smoke lifted higher. Yet what they would soon find is that Arnold and Wooster were not their only problems as Ludington’s men began to assemble. In the course of that night, through mud and mist, rain and dark, against all obstacles, Sybil would cover forty miles before returning home in the early hours of that morning. Just over two years to the day of Paul Revere’s famous ride into the countryside of Boston she had rode twice as far to raise up the 400 men that would chase the British as they hurriedly exited Danbury that morning. Though they would not be able to save Danbury from the British they would be a part of the larger forces that would engage them at the strategic American victory at the Battle of Ridgefield. A short time later Colonel Ludington would receive praise from General Alexander Hamilton for his efforts, writing, “I congratulate you on the Danbury expedition. The stores destroyed have been purchased at a pretty high price to the enemy” with his daughter receiving personal notes of thank you from both the Comte Rochambeau and General Washington. Never really claiming her share of the glory a short time later she would slowly fade to the realm of the obscure, a part of lost history of the American Revolution, for over 100 years. Even today, while names like Paul Revere or William Dawes invoke a stir, hers remains largely unknown in the pantheon of early American heroes.
