Executive Producer: Monisha Iswaran Audio & Video Producer: Michael Kean Mamamia acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which we have recorded this podcast. You're listening to a Mom with mea podcast. 00:11Speaker 2 From Mom and May. I welcome to this bill, your daily pop culture fixed. I'm em Vernon and I'm Anihaiswarren, and we are doing we can Everything with my voice gone as well. It does not sound as nice as my previous weeks, because previous weeks does sound quite nice. 00:29Speaker 1 You've got a nice little husk going though. I feel like it's quite sexy. 00:32Speaker 2 I kind of hope it stays like this. 00:35Speaker 3 You're doing a bit of scar jokes and make my throat very dry though, so not good for you, but good for the people. 00:43Speaker 2 Yeah, good for everyone else. Anyway. It's our weekend Watch episode where we give you our favorite movies and TV shows to watch this weekend. On the show today, we have a movie that you can dance to in your living room or on the cinema stage. And we also have a movie that you can vibe with, laugh with, investigate. 01:05Speaker 1 With, talk with. You went on a real journey with that movie. 01:08Speaker 2 Oh my god, I have so much to say, spillers, But first, mon, you have a movie that's been on your radar recently. 01:14Speaker 3 Yes, so there's a movie that's coming out today and I haven't seen it yet because it only drops later tonight. 01:20Speaker 1 But I'm really excited about it because I've read the book. 01:22Speaker 3 Oh so I think a lot of people would have heard of this, because I think a lot of people are reading it right now. Literally went to the park the other day and I saw a woman get out of a book and it was this book. It's everywhere. You might recognize it as the bright yellow book with the octopus on it, yes, but it's called Remarkably Bright Creatures. 01:38Speaker 2 I've heard very, very good things about this book. 01:40Speaker 3 Yeah, it's spent more than sixty four weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. It's written by this lady called Shelby van Pelt. 01:48Speaker 1 I don't know any of her other work, but she wrote this book. 01:51Speaker 3 And I actually read it from my book club and I aced the quiz, so it did really well, And I want to free your. 01:56Speaker 2 Book club has quizzes? 01:58Speaker 1 Shall we do a quiz? We take it very serious, not one of. 02:00Speaker 2 Those meant to be fun and enjoyed. 02:03Speaker 1 It's fun and you learn things. Emily. 02:06Speaker 3 So the plot is basically the main character is called Tova Sullivan. She's this woman in her seventies she's retired, but she doesn't fully want to retire, so she still has this part time job cleaning the aquarium and the aquarium the town aquarium. Yeah, it's the aquarium of the town. And she forms a bond. Nothing weird, but she forms a bond with this octopus called Marcellus. 02:29Speaker 2 Is it like a sexual book. 02:30Speaker 3 It's not a sexual pod. It's more of a deeper emotional connection. 02:34Speaker 1 He just gets her. 02:35Speaker 2 Octopuses are meant to be very smart creatures. Isn't it octopi not octopuses. 02:39Speaker 1 I don't think it's octopi. Well, there's no plural in this because it's only one o. 02:43Speaker 2 Well, this octopus seems like he is he or she he muscles, is very smart. So this we have an octopus that would guess who would win the fief for World Cup. 02:52Speaker 3 Yes, so there's all these videos of octopus octopi that. 02:56Speaker 2 Go viral and she doesn't take it seriously. 02:59Speaker 1 But okay, well I'm pretty sure that's what it is. But the woman who wrote. 03:03Speaker 3 This book got inspired by one of those viral videos of the octopus doing something smart. She was like, oh, they're so smart, and then she like wrote this book and there's. 03:10Speaker 1 Parts that are from the octopus perspective. 03:12Speaker 2 They love crazy imaginations. I know, I watched that video and I was like, cool, that made like a massive career out of writing this, Like she's a. 03:21Speaker 3 Seller book, actually great character inspoke, So there's little parts of book that are from the octopus perspective. And he's quite like, I'm sure it's a good book. He said that he's quite disdainful of humans. He's always like, I don't know, he's always kind of like looking down on them. 03:36Speaker 1 It's kind of comic relief in the book club. 03:38Speaker 3 People were divided over whether he's very annoying or very lovable. 03:42Speaker 1 Ah, but anyway. 03:44Speaker 3 It premiered at Sundance earlier this year and was very well received, very warm reception, so I'm very excited to see it. Sally's Field is playing Toba, and Lewis Pullman is in it. He's playing Cameron, who's this other character, Who's this. 03:56Speaker 1 Guy who's like thirty. Honestly, he really annoyed me in it. 03:58Speaker 2 He's just kind of like thirty. 04:00Speaker 1 He's just trying to like, he just has nothing figured out. He just has he's always like. 04:05Speaker 2 Him a break, he's down thirty everything's always breaking. 04:08Speaker 1 His camper van's always breaking. I think it's it is. 04:12Speaker 3 If you read it, you do mean everything goes wrong and it's sort of his fault and you just get it together cameraon. 04:18Speaker 1 But anyway, he's also a lead character. So very excited to see it. I think it'll be quite a heartwarming watch. It's quite emotion I. 04:24Speaker 2 Think, do you think I should read the book before I watch it? 04:27Speaker 3 Yeah? Maybe if you can be bothered. But it's going to come out tonight, so I don't know if you want to be part of the cultural movement, and yeah, maybe I'll just watch the movie. 04:34Speaker 1 Maybe just watch it. 04:35Speaker 3 So it's out on Netflix, I believe around five pm tonight, remarkably Brian creatures. 04:40Speaker 2 I'm excited. 04:42Speaker 3 Okay, So I went to see a movie this week where I have to say, I haven't been to a movie where the atmosphere in the audience was like this crazy for a while. It was the Billie Eilish Hit Me Hard and Soft tour, like the live concert experience in three D. 04:58Speaker 1 The day of a show, it just feels like any day at all. 05:02Speaker 4 I just feel like I'm like going to hang out with my friends. 05:05Speaker 2 Here I go. 05:08Speaker 4 To see the scrapes on my hands that is from the fans. I want to feel like it's me and them. You love that. 05:20Speaker 1 I love that. It was really good. 05:24Speaker 3 And I've never gone to a stadium tour of hers, like I didn't go to this tour. I've seen her at festivals when she was on the way up, like it grew in the moon and stuff, but. 05:31Speaker 1 I have never cared. 05:32Speaker 3 I've never seen her well after this, I really want to because she's amazing. I feel like I went to the concert because the crowd were like super fans, so everyone was there dressed in their like caps and kind of like dressed like her and were full like singing along. It was kind of like with the Ears tour with Taylor Swift, how people would go down to the front and like marsh in. 05:51Speaker 2 The like was there a marsh in your cinema? 05:53Speaker 1 There was a mosh in my cinema. 05:55Speaker 3 And the guy next to me was honestly, he brought a lot of the vibes like I wish I could recommend this movie. Sitting next to this particular man, he was like every time she did like a vocal run, he'd be like, yeah, he's kind of like do it along, and then he'd follow along every now and then be like, WHOA, I killed that anyway, So he was very invested. Would you consider yourself a Billie Eilish fan? 06:16Speaker 2 I would consider myself like, yeah, I would say I'm a fan of her music, but I don't know much about her as a person, and I don't think I would like when she came to Sydney. I think it was like a year ago she came to Sydney. I wasn't a big fan enough then to be like, Okay, I'm going to fork out for a concert ticket because concert tickets are expensive. 06:36Speaker 1 They are really expensive. 06:37Speaker 2 As you guys mentioned on the spill, this is. 06:40Speaker 1 A prime example of it. So I would say the same. 06:43Speaker 3 I really like a music, definitely not like a hardcore fan. So I went into it being like, oh am I going to be like a big enough fan to really enjoy this movie. But I really did. And I will say there were probably only like two songs I didn't recognize, like she has so many bangers. 06:56Speaker 2 Yeah, just keep going, and she's an excellent performer and live singer. 07:00Speaker 3 Because she obviously has so many deep emotional, moody songs. Me and my friend who went, We were like, whoa kind of like, you know, feels right now, but then it will suddenly be like bad guy and the whole cinema goes crazy. And it's obviously such a good way to get to experience that if you didn't go to the concert as well. I was thinking before the only concert films I can remember seeing other than this are the Eras Tour and then like never say never, the justin Peoble. 07:21Speaker 2 One, Oh yeah, oh did you ever you know which one I went to which when I was like quite young, like I was in primary school. The Hannah Montana concert me Miley Cyrus. 07:33Speaker 1 I did actually watch that too, and that was crazy. 07:36Speaker 2 Every time one of the Jonas brothers came on screen, every young girl in the cinema would just scream ahead off And I was like, because I was quite a mature young person, so I was like, they're not really there, They're not there. 07:48Speaker 3 I'm so glad you were there to clarify that I was such a looser. 07:51Speaker 2 I was like scolding these kids my age. 07:53Speaker 1 Yeah, like, thank thanks everyone. 07:56Speaker 3 So I feel like this one was different to sort of like the Ears to where it's just the concert films because they had these little behind the scenes interview bits with her as well on the day of the concert, and she it was done in collaboration with James Cameron, like he was one of the directors. 08:10Speaker 2 Oh wow, kind of friend. 08:11Speaker 1 I'm like in between avatars. 08:12Speaker 2 Yes, he's I need to show people the length of my work, not like blue people. 08:17Speaker 1 I'm more than that. 08:18Speaker 2 I'm more than avatar. 08:19Speaker 3 And the way it's shot is great, like the way she has such hypnotic eyes and the way she sort of stares down the camera. 08:25Speaker 2 And the way she does her makeup. I remember one of her I think it was Vogue where they do like the celebrities and how they do their makeup, and like her video went completely viral because of the way she does the eyeliner is so intense. 08:36Speaker 3 They show that in this too, where she sort of tweaks it on the end. She does all her hair and makeup for the tour herself. 08:42Speaker 2 That's crazy. And she's so good at makeup because her face always looks beat. 08:47Speaker 3 Yeah, she looked really great, and she talked about some really interesting things in the interview bits that he did with her, so she sort of explained her reasoning for why she dresses in the kind of basketball jersey and like baggy shorts for the concert, and she sort of spoke about how there's not that many female pop stars who don't do the whole like dress up and look really sexy kind of thing. Obviously we see that more with like Taylor Swift, Sabrina carp and to take and prey all those people, and she was like, I just didn't really want to have to do that because when I was growing up watching rap artists and they would just run around the stage being so comfortable and free, I just wanted to be like that, and she didn't see other women doing that, so she really wanted to be that for like the next generation of girls. 09:24Speaker 2 That's so cute. 09:25Speaker 1 Yeah, So I thought. 09:26Speaker 3 They showed really interesting things like that, a lot of interviews with the fans, and then also sort of showed how she is as a creative, like she's really involved in the lighting, she's really involved in everything to do with the stadium more than just like getting up there and singing. And then one thing I thought was really cute is that every town that they go to, they kind of connect with a rescue dog center and they bring in dogs for the crew and the other band members to like. 09:49Speaker 1 Have us like little therapy dogs and they play with them. 09:51Speaker 2 Shut up, why do we do that here? 09:53Speaker 1 And we should bring that. 09:55Speaker 2 We just had a dog in our studio just sleeping over there. 09:57Speaker 1 I think the podcast would be better. 09:58Speaker 2 Yeah, let's put that in our next like quarterly review. I want to do this, improvements to me for yourself, And I was like, improvements for everyone else bringing dogs. 10:10Speaker 3 So yeah, Billy Eilish hit me hard and soft. The tour live, it's out in cinema's now. Probably a good one if you have kids as well. I feel like all the like there were a lot of children there and they were really getting into it too, so. 10:20Speaker 2 Yeah, good family experience. Okay, I need to talk about a movie that I saw over the weekend. I was very lucky. I got to go to the Sydney screening of this movie. And when you know it's a weekend screening, it means there's going to be a lot of kids there. Because kids can come out in the weekend. 10:39Speaker 1 They're like vampires at night on the weekend. 10:41Speaker 2 We never see them throughout the week. We only see them on the weekend. So I went to the screening much similar to you, chaotic crowd, vibe vibes, a lot of children. And I was sitting next to Tina Burke and a few of us, and someone was like, Oh my god, look at all those kids over there. Look how many there are. And I was like, Oh my god, that's crazy. And then I realized those kids, all of them belonged to exact producer Georgie Page, all eight all millions of kids. There's like a million kids in that theater. Whoever went to Sheep Detectives in the weekend? All those kids you saw, all Georgie Pages kids, every single one of them. It was such a fun movie. Oh sorry, it's called Sheep Detectives. I should have lived with that. 11:22Speaker 1 The movie you've been talking about, a wee movie. 11:25Speaker 3 Of the year. 11:26Speaker 2 I reckon. I think Tina Burke agrees with me. Georgie, do you agree with me? She says, best movie ever. 11:33Speaker 5 If there's one secret to happiness in. 11:35Speaker 3 My life, it's taking care of the kindest creatures on earth, sheep. 11:42Speaker 4 I'm keeping them well fed, well groomed, and. 11:45Speaker 2 Each day read out loud to them mysteries who've done it? I know who the killer was. 11:51Speaker 1 Our shepherd was murdered and we shall solve the crime. I am George Hardy's lawyer. 11:57Speaker 5 He wrote and will in the night Time stories that people and the will are always the suspects. 12:01Speaker 2 That man had nothing. 12:03Speaker 1 Well, actually there is thirty million dollars and we have our motive. 12:09Speaker 2 It is so good. I regret not bringing more people because I want everyone to watch this. 12:15Speaker 3 You're like, why didn't they shut down the street at the State Theater like for dettlewors Prada. 12:19Speaker 2 I actually reckon, Hugh Jackman should have done like a big premiere here, Like, the reception for this movie is huge? 12:25Speaker 1 So is he in it quite a lot? 12:27Speaker 2 He's yes, he's in trailer. 12:29Speaker 1 Didn't make it seem that way. 12:30Speaker 2 Because his character dies very early on in the movie, which is also shown in the trailer, but he comes back during like flashbacks and stuff like that. So he's in like the whole length of the movie as an actor. Okay, but it's the highest rated movie he's ever done. 12:43Speaker 1 That's so unfortunate for him. What about the Greatest Showman? I thought that the guy's literally Wolverine. 12:52Speaker 2 Sorry, Hugh, but it is what it is anyway, sheep detective what it's about? So yes, Hugh Jackman is I would say the main character. He plays a shepherd who owns like this flock of sheep, and they're not like you know how when you see a flock of sheep, how they all look the same. 13:08Speaker 4 Not. 13:10Speaker 2 I think he like collects him throughout his life, so they're all like kind of like sheep who have just all come together. Anyways, he loves his sheep so much. She lives in just like a little caravan on his like field. And every night he reads detective stories to his sheep, and they say and he thinks he's just having a good time reading stories to his sheep, and then when he goes inside, it's shown to the audience that the sheep actually understand everything he's been saying, and they get really into the detective stories. His I was gonna say, the main sheep, his main sheep, the top sheep. His name is Lily. 13:46Speaker 1 Oh, it's a woman. It's a woman. 13:48Speaker 2 And she is played by Julia Louis Dreyfuss. Oh, very very good. She is like so well done. The other main character sheep is Sebastian and he's played by Brian Cranson, also really well done. 14:00Speaker 3 They played by just the voice, the voice voice. They're not there the voice. The sheep are very much Cgi sheep, and they're very very cute anyway, So what happens. Hugh Jackman murdered. I forgot his real name in the movie. We're calling him Hugh Jackman. 14:17Speaker 2 But you're not spoiling because he's in the trailer. It's in the trailer. He gets murdered, and then the sheep decide to investigate his murder because they know so much about murder because he's been reading them all these detective stories. 14:28Speaker 1 It's almost like he knew it was gonna happen. 14:30Speaker 2 Ah nice, And it's really hard for the sheep because they've never left their flock and they've never left the field, so even just crossing a road, they've never seen a road before. The Steaks couldn't be high of the sheep leaving their field to get into the town because the stupid humans don't know what they're doing. Nicholas Braun is the main police guy and the only police guy of the town. He has no idea what he's doing. He's busy taking orders from Emma Thompson and she's just the lawyer. She has no idea what she's doing, so the have to keep giving the humans clues so they can help investigate Hugh Jackman's death. 15:05Speaker 3 Do you know there's actually a lot of parallels to this in the Octopus book, because the octopus. 15:08Speaker 1 Helped solve a mystery. I forgot to say that. 15:10Speaker 3 So there's a running commentary that humans need to listen to animals more. 15:14Speaker 2 Okay, whatever, No, it's true. I think humans need to listen to animals more. And in the end, they do listen to them. I mean not physically. They still can't understand what they're saying, but they do listen to them. But there was a lot of good analogies in this, So, like the sheep do this thing where they all come down to three to forget what they just experience. So it's all about like kind of like living in your trauma, not always like pushing things aside and trying to forget it. 15:41Speaker 1 So what but count down to three to forget what they're just seeing because they were. 15:44Speaker 2 Like, Hugh Jackman just died. Everyone, let's forget this. This was so terrible. One, two, three, And then they forget it. But then they were like, no, we deserve to remember Hugh Jackman. He did so much for our life and for our flock. But then, but then I looked into this, this is not a thing that sheep do. Sheep have actually very good memories and remember everything. 16:02Speaker 3 Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't expect so that was kind of a PLoP hole in the movie. 16:06Speaker 1 I thought this was steeped. 16:07Speaker 2 In real sheep yess. Yes, what is a real sheep? Fact though, is that there's a cute little lamb in the movie that's like really like muddy and dirty, and the other sheep want nothing to do with it because it's the winter lamb and usually when lambs are born in the winter gets rejected by. 16:24Speaker 1 The flock so they die. 16:26Speaker 2 Yeah, I mean, this one didn't die spoilers, but like Hugh Jackman's the only one that really loves it, and he died. He dies, And now who's gonna love the lamb? 16:36Speaker 1 I'm gonna want you to forget that? 16:38Speaker 4 What? 16:39Speaker 2 Two? 16:39Speaker 4 Three? 16:40Speaker 1 What lamb? 16:41Speaker 2 What is this place? Where am I? But anyway, okay, I do want to say that this movie, although it's like marketed towards kids and family, it is such a good movie and it's also has really deep themes that I didn't expect from a kid's movie, kind of like int like where like you know how adults like draw so many like parallels to it. It's one of those really good movies. It's also much sader than what I expected. And because the whole thing's in a mystery, it's kind of like a Sherlock's Home vibe where you're like trying to guess who the killer is A body kid next to me guessed it in two seconds. 17:19Speaker 1 We like, don't spoil it. 17:21Speaker 2 Well, the person came on screen and the kid next to me was like, that person did it, And I was like, kids are so stupid. And then as I was watching, I was like, oh, maybe they're just I think that might be And then yeah, that eight year old kid next to me just spoiled the whole movie. But you know what, kids are smart. I guess. 17:38Speaker 3 Well, it's really good though, when they do those movies that parents can also genuinely enjoy, not just like you know some like Duck. 17:44Speaker 4 Well. 17:45Speaker 2 Everyone from our team were just like full adults. We didn't besides Georgie, we all bought other adult people. 17:50Speaker 3 You guys decided Saturday, this is what I'm doing and watching some sheeps of. 17:54Speaker 2 The Murder and I'm so glad I did. I really want to watch it again. 17:57Speaker 1 Now you have really sold it. I want to see it now. 17:59Speaker 2 Oh my god, it's so good. Anyway, that's sheep detectives in cinemas. Yes, you can take your family, but I promise you you will enjoy it more than your kids. 18:07Speaker 1 Thank you so much for listening to this spill. 18:09Speaker 3 We have another super exciting episode dropping this afternoon, a brutally honest review of a film that you absolutely don't. 18:16Speaker 1 Want to miss. Emma and Laura are unpacking all of it. 18:19Speaker 3 This fill is produced by me Minishiuslawn with a video production by Michael Keene and we'll see you this afternoon. 18:25Speaker 5 Bye see ya, Mamma. Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of the land. We have recorded this podcast on the Gatigol people of the eorination. 18:42Speaker 1 We pay our respects to their elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander cultures.Become a Mamamia subscriber: https://www.mamamia.com.au/subscribeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm Laura Brandy and I'm Vernon, and welcome to Weekend Weekend, where we talk about the best new TV shows and movies that have just dropped this week. Although this week we have two movie recommendations for you to Buzzy movie recommendation. 00:31Speaker 2 Sorry, we need to correct that we have a movie and a half recommendation. 00:34Speaker 1 Okay, I'm already off you for just saying that. A half recommendation Emily Treesman and what do you. 00:41Speaker 2 Mean, guys? I tried really hard. So the movie I'm recommending is called Apex. Yes, it is on Netflix and it stars Charlie Theron and Taron Egerton. This movie is a horror suspense movie in the wilderness. It is so scary. I've only watched half of it. 01:03Speaker 1 Are you serious? 01:04Speaker 2 It's so scared. 01:05Speaker 1 It's okay, But also I just want people to take that with a grade of salt, because you're a scared cat. 01:09Speaker 2 I'm like, you're easily scared, easily scared, but this one just reached a whole new level. 01:15Speaker 1 I don't know what it is. 01:16Speaker 2 Maybe it's a type of horror that I am scared of, which I've only just established from watching this movie. Anyway, I'll let you know what the movie is about. 01:24Speaker 1 Please do so. 01:25Speaker 2 Charlie's Theron plays. This happens in the first few minutes of the film, so I feel like I can say, ye say it. She's like an adrenaline junkie. Yeah, she's like loves rock climbing. She's like one of those dar devil kind of people. And both her and her partner are in the like early early stages of the movie, so this is not a spoiler. They're climbing up this mountain and he falls to his death. 01:46Speaker 1 Okay, just so you know, every climbing adventure movie starts like that. 01:50Speaker 2 Yeah, yeah, yeah, it sets up her as a person. 01:53Speaker 1 Yeah, exactly every movie I've watched about people being like dare devil junkies climbing blah blah blah. Yeah, like for that movie where they're it's on top of the tower and there has to climb up death at the start. Also, yeah, every every kind of climber, you have to. 02:05Speaker 2 Figure out the main character's purpose. 02:07Speaker 1 Yeah, you need to know the steaks straight away. Because all of a sudden, you're just like, this is so dangerous, people are gonna diet. It makes you And also, can I say nothing is more terrifying than watching on screen someone accidentally fall to their death because you can feel it. I don't find it like a like a like my hands. And it's the type of the it's the type of horror that I can't get around. Yeah, it is so scary because it's so rare. You're so worried that one day you might And you famously don't love the outdoors. You don't love activities, You don't love anything that would put you at a great height. 02:35Speaker 2 Why why hate nature? 02:36Speaker 1 Yeah no, why not famously hate nature? Hate adventures? So why do you think you'd find yourself in the situation that you would be climbing a great like mountain or something. 02:45Speaker 2 I'll tell you why, because this movie is set in the blue mountains. 02:48Speaker 1 Yeah, it's way to Also, if she was doing it with her partner, you're like, of course that's gonna happen to you. If you go on a date with someone that let's go climb a mountain, You're like, okay. 02:58Speaker 2 God, you'll never catch me with someone like that. 03:01Speaker 1 Oh see, I think it'd be a fun day. 03:02Speaker 2 I can immediately suss out on dating apps who the adrenaline junkies are in the men that I match with, and it's an immediate I can't shite past s, white past I can't do it. I can't do it. I am not an adventurous woman. 03:14Speaker 1 So this is set in the Blue Mountains, right, And can I just say, we're only just getting over Australia's like pr problem of the whole Wolf Creek situation where for years people were just like because obviously that's about that's based on a true story of a man in the outback who hunted and killed backpackers and those movies and the TV show are so gruesome. 03:32Speaker 2 Well I think they learned from that. So it's not actually like mentioned that it is the Blue mass if they made up like some fictional like national park. But it was very it's very clearly the Blue Mountains, and we all know that they filmed in the Blue Mountains. 03:45Speaker 1 People know it's in Australia. 03:46Speaker 2 Yes, it's very because Taron Egerton has a very Bogan accent and it's a very well done Bogen action. 03:53Speaker 1 We we love a stereotype when it hits. 03:55Speaker 2 Yes, it is, that's what it works so good, to the point where I was like, I forgot he was Australian. Then I was like, but he's not. He's very British. It's very British man anyway. So yeah, Charlie's husband dies. She now goes traveling to Australia to do this like long long nature walk. It's giving Wild, Yeah, it's giving cake. 04:16Speaker 1 It's giving Reese with a spoon, like trudging along a long. 04:19Speaker 2 Path with a backpack, except a man is hunting her. 04:22Speaker 1 Yeah, and you know what, Wild could have used that infusion of a bit of drama. 04:26Speaker 2 It's like, let's hurry it up, let's speed it on, walk faster Reese. So it's basically about Charlie. He's like going through the Blue Mountains while being hunted by a man, hence Apex. It is so scary because it's so real. 04:41Speaker 1 Oh okay, it just feels real, Yeah, because the fantasy element or anything like that to it, Like it's just an evil man doing evil thing, and it's all about. 04:50Speaker 2 Like women like exploring on their own and how are reminded that we can't do that? 04:54Speaker 1 Oh okay, well yeah, exactly that's everyone's biggest fear when they go out on these things. It's like, again, I love that. 04:59Speaker 2 I can't even walk to me corner shop at nine pm because you're so scared. This movie has blindlessly the spirit. 05:04Speaker 1 A woman is literally out in nature by herself, doing dangerous things, and the most dangerous thing is still a miss, it's still a man. Well that you should have just got a bear in there and called it a day. 05:14Speaker 2 The bear would have actually helped her movie Cocaine bear. That would have been a great bed to have. Anyway, It's so scary, but it's so good. And the filming of the actual like scenes of like the walkthrough of the bush and like her in the river and like getting like thrown over in the kayak is like so like so scary. It's so so well done. It doesn't feel any like it's a proper film. It's not like anything cgi at all. It's just done really well. Her acting is amazing. His acting is amazing. We already would have known that. But it's just one of those movies if you are like an adrenaline junkie or you love like that kind of like suspense horror of like will he catch her. Won't he catch her? 05:54Speaker 1 Then? 05:54Speaker 2 This is like the kind of movie for you. You're on the edge of your seat. You're like sweating through the whole thing. 05:58Speaker 1 And how shary, isn't it? Because she's a good action stuff. 06:01Speaker 2 She is so good. She comes across like the good thing about her being in this film is that it's not I feel like if it was a different actress, that could have gone the way of like the poor woman can't get away, Like she's so small and fragile, she can't escape this. She comes across as like a badass in this film, Like it's not like Damsel in distress. It's very much like you can do it, you can make it out like she's so strong. I think that's also the premise of the film. And in that beginning scene, you know she is like well experienced in this world. So it's nothing like, oh my god, I don't know what to do. I don't know how to fire a gun, I don't know what to do. It's like very much like she can do this, she can do this. We're backing her. She's gonna win, okay. Taron Egerton so scary. 06:40Speaker 1 So scary. That's complicated for you because you love. 06:44Speaker 2 Him, she's so and he's like been in an Australia bondai watching the paparazzi photos, pretending it's. 06:50Speaker 1 Filming or horror. Okay, so apex on Netflix. Someone please watch the movie and then tell scaredy Cat Emily the ending. 06:58Speaker 2 Oh my god, yes, and tell me where if you can. I'm not wearing the Blue Mountains. I did the filming. I don't want to go there. 07:02Speaker 1 Don't you want to go there and take a picture. 07:04Speaker 2 I don't want to avoid that. They at all casts. 07:07Speaker 1 Okay. I can't believe this day has finally come. The build up to this for years. But also I feel like I have been living this movie the last month or so, at least because I traveled overseas into the cast. I've written multiple articles about it, We've released multiple videos and podcasts. And what will I do with my life? 07:28Speaker 2 It is that true? What? What are your plans? I don't know. 07:30Speaker 1 There's just darkness. There's just dark. 07:32Speaker 2 Take up a hobby, maybe go go bushwalking in the Blue Mountains. 07:35Speaker 1 I call you. I'm like, okay, I tried to be Telly's throw and I'm hanging from a mountain. What do I do of course, I'm talking about the fact that the devil weares prior to to is finally in cinemas. 07:48Speaker 2 You are here to help us through our current scandal, but I did not hire you, and all I need to do is my time until you've failed what you check the train do. 07:59Speaker 1 I'm going to make something of this job. You could write a book, The Definitive Miranda Priestley Expose Sindy. We did that. 08:08Speaker 2 The Brunello Cucinelli pants. Love those, and you definitely need an embroidered two piece to tam set, but not the terra cotta. Because you're so pale. 08:20Speaker 1 So. 08:22Speaker 2 Jealous that you watch it, I have such fomo. If you've listened to our episode where we talked about your interviews, I said I was saving to watch it with my mum, which I'm doing this Sunday. It's only a few days away. I was so jealous because you and a lot of the team got to watch it. You went to the Sydney premiere for it. Was it on the Tuesday, Yes, it was on the Tuesdays. 08:44Speaker 1 It was the very fans. 08:45Speaker 2 This has been a very long week for me space It's. 08:47Speaker 1 Been a lot. Yes, it was very fancy premiere at the State Theater. It was all done with the iconic red Devil Wears shoe. The champagne was flowing. They had like Devil Wears prior to like customized coke can give back some. 08:59Speaker 2 Of you didn't bring me back? 09:00Speaker 1 Oh my god, actually said, I didn't break myself back. But actually I'm why. I'm really sad that you're there. Just as a quick note is that you know how normally at the State Theater to line up, you line up along the street and it's chaos. And this time I was like, oh, there's no line, this is great. No, the line was down a back alleyway, so every person moved there and I saw like really famous people, like people have had huge TV shows overseas, like Australian influences, like Australian actorssh stars. No, I didn't see Practice Brummel here, who's obviously in the movie. No, No, I'm assuming that they didn't make him. We had to go all line up at an alleyway and at one point you're standing next to bins and barbed wire, and I was like, our jobs are so bad. 09:38Speaker 2 As Miranda would have won it. 09:39Speaker 1 Yeah, exactly, I have everyone being like this is us at the Devil was problem. No, it was so fun to see in a cinema because obviously, despite the fact that I interviewed the cast, I've written about it and done all these podcasts, I hadn't actually seen the full movie until that night because it was kept under lock and key. So now that I've seen the full thing. 09:55Speaker 2 I'm like, God, do you think I love it? Did you love it? 09:58Speaker 1 I liked it so and that's really high praise love. No, no, no, I loved I loved parts of it. I'm not even exaggerating, Like, here's the thing about the Devil weares prior too so so much to say. So it does pick up twenty years after the original, and again this is this is spoiler free because Emily hasn't seen it. I wouldn't do that to you, so don't you guys worry. So obviously we find Andy Sack. She's back in New York. She looks at the fact that she's been living overseas for many years and she's fulfilled her dream of becoming a serious journalist. But then that job gets ripped away from her and I won't say why, but it's very upsetting and sad. And also can I just say PSA to anyone who works in the media industry, This movie is very sober. You're like, oh, I should find another job just in something, but I have no other skills. 10:43Speaker 2 This is the one thing. 10:44Speaker 1 What do I do? So there's that. And at the same time, Miranda is still at Runway Magazine where she is the editor in chief, but she's up for a really big promotion. But the promotion yeah to like with a lives Clark, which is the publishing house, Like still be at Runway, but be like a drive kind of like how Adam Wintaur is now like still the Bosses, but now the overseeral of all the Conde Nast kind of products and things. But then a huge scandal breaks and Miranda and Runway face cancelation and also what will become of her promotion? Yeah, so the states could not be higher. Nigel, obviously played by the incredible Stanley Tucci, is still at Runway Magazine, still the fashion editor, but because of the way media has gone, now his fashion empire, I think I wrote in my review his fashion closet is now a cutlery draw, as in, like not a physical culturally draw, but like the size and the end and stuff. And at the same time, Emily Blunt's character Emily Charleston, is an executive at Deal. But there's a whole backstory there that I shan't get into, so there's a bit of a twist of fate to get it at what I give too much away that Andy ends up back at Runway Magazine as the head of the features department, and then it's this kind of thing of like her having to prove herself to Miranda, save the magazine, save people's careers. And then a lot of the movie also takes place in Italy. Oh yeah, okay, and those things are right switch like Emily, Yeah, They're like, hey, let's do our last season somewhere else. So I will say the best things about it. The original screenwriter, Aleene Broch McKenna, who wrote the first Devil west prit Of movie, is back and out of any movie where it's important to have the original screenwriter, the Devil Wes Prior, I would say is the one that matters the most because the dialogue is such a huroow piece of like the quotable lines, every line exactly, it's like every there's no it's all, it's just so snappy, so smart, so interesting, and so she's penned the sequel script and you can so tell it's exactly the same kind of humor. It's so cutting and interesting and you have these great one liners, so we love that. Of course, the cast are amazing, like watching them step back into these roles, and it's done a way where it doesn't feel jarring and it doesn't feel like you know, sometimes you step back into watching something and it just feels weird, like a lot of people said that with the Gilmore Girls Reboo, that it felt off with the pacing and how they spoke and the delivery and staff, whereas this feels correct. And also it starts so strong like the Devil we is Prota too, Like they jump straight back into the kind of the mix of the drama and you have the four main characters of Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway on screen together very quickly, which was actually a request I found out from Emily Blunt when she read the original script of saying like I don't think we have enough scenes with the core four, and we need one earlier on and that and it doesn't feel like fan service. It just really works and puts you into this world. 13:30Speaker 2 So do we have a lot of montages? You know? I love a montage, really a montage. 13:35Speaker 1 That's the thing. That's the thing. It's not as bring back montages, I know, I bring back makeovers. 13:40Speaker 2 So there's no, there's not and has always the best on montage, no, I know. 13:43Speaker 1 But also because she they explain why she still looks really good and she has nice clothes, like there's a plot point for that. She does get to go into the fashion closet a few times with Stanley tucciin and he pulls or a few things and stuff like that. But I will just say from my untrained fashion eye that the fashion this movie is nowhere near as good as the first. And I give it a little bit of grace because I've been watching the first one for twenty years, so those outfits are burnt into my brain. But I have such a vivid memory of watching The Devil Wes Prita, and every time like a new outfit would come on, you'd be like yeah, yeah, and me going home. And I was like working as a checkout chicken at Kmart in Townsville and I'd like try and like dress like The Devil Wears Pride of characters and it just. 14:20Speaker 2 Like so many movies have taken that, like yeah, montage of the fashion, like coming out of the car door, but then going in the building in a different outfit, and then going into a room and they're in a different outfit, and being at your desk and she's in a different outfit. 14:33Speaker 1 Oh okay, Okay, look, there's great clothes in there, but the clothes don't feel like this incredible character like they did in the first Mate. Okay, I will say, just going back to the good things because I'll get to the bad stuff in a minute. It doesn't feel like a sequel that shouldn't exist, Like it feels like there was more storyless deserve. It feels really deserved, not just because it's so good, but also because The Devil Wears Pritor. When I was really thinking about when I was sitting at my computer writing my review very late last night in this office, I was like, what is it that made this movie so ripe? For the fact that you could make a sequel, despite the fact that it's so beloved, because it's heaps of beloved movies that have released sequels that have not been good and that felt not correct and not needed. But The Devil wes Prator is one of the very few movies that ends on both an ending and a beginning because it ends with Andy leaving going off to forge her career. It ends where Emily is also starting her career. So it kind of it's very natural to wonder what came next because we're seeing the beginning of these women's careers, not the ending. And also Andy was like, she was kind of you getting back together with Nate, but she also was breaking out with him, So it's not like because to make a sequel in general, you often have to break things from the original. You have to break up a happily ever after, you have to end a friendship, you have to bring back a villain to make it work. It's like where people are upset about and just like that with Sex and the City because in order to bring Sex and the City back, they had to break all the things from the finale, and that's why people found it jarring. Whereas Devil we was pritor. It's just like you didn't have to break mething. 16:01Speaker 2 It was very much to be continued. 16:03Speaker 1 Yeah, exactly, and so that's why it feels like it the story is worth it. But also the story and the plot I thought was so great at the end. It has like I would feel like Shakespearean level twists and betrayal. Like a few times I was a gasping. I was like, and she said that, Oh my god, she says, someone says such. We'll talk about this when we do a brially honest review, which mystery. There's a few lines in there. I'm like, that is the meanest thing that anyone has ever said on film, but so but so like needed. There's some really emotional moments in it too, and the emotion didn't feel like, oh, we're just piggybacking off the original like they felt earned in the new movie. So that's all the good stuff. Ten out of ten love recommend see it in the cinema if you can. It kind of peetered a bit in the middle, and I began to get this like kind of sinking feeling in my stomach that The Devil was product had ruined the character of Miranda Priestley, because I felt like it had taken away some of her mystique and some of her the things that made her an iconic character by some times making her look really helpless or making her like giddy and happy. There's the point where she's like in the kitchen of her home, like just like making a drink and like she's chatting away to Andy, and I was like, I feel like I'm watching a female she doesn't do that, but Jed it makes sense later on the movie. It's like in the first movie, how they had to have that scene of her with no makeup where Andy comes upon her. 17:19Speaker 2 You had was that a scene that Meryl Street requested? 17:22Speaker 1 Yeah, they wanted to take it out of the first movie, and she was like, if you don't have that scene of her broken and different, then the movie doesn't work and the charactersn't work. And as I watched this movie, I was like, Oh, we needed those giddy, helpless scenes in the middle. She needed to kind of falter so that when she started flying get at the end, you were like, oh, I get it, I get it. There was that, And also the other thing is like the new character is so great, like somewhere in Ashley Turn Out of Ten, Caleb Haron, Turn Out of Tan, like everyone else so good. There was obviously so much that was shot that had to be cut, Like we've heard about all the cameos and scenes. 17:54Speaker 2 God and ashually wasn't cut. 17:55Speaker 1 Yeah, no, no, she was. Well, I think she'd have a lot more scenes, but obviously they didn't all make it into the movie. Even Meryl Strip told me in our interview that her scenes were cut. 18:02Speaker 2 Yeah, that's right. 18:03Speaker 1 But where I think having so much of the storyline needing to be cut was with Patrick Bramble's character Peter. And he's very charming in it, but it's such a small storyline in the movie, and. 18:16Speaker 2 So he's meant to be like ane Haeway's love and. 18:18Speaker 1 She's only love interest. Yeah, and there's a lot of paparazzi photos of them that came out because he's so hot, really, he's hot, and there's a lot of they became like iconic paparazzi photos of him and Anne Hathaway filming outside in New York and they look so crazy in love and it looked like an old school romance, and we were like like an old school room calm, and everyone's like, oh my god, can't wait to see that. That's one in the movie. Yeah, I just want you to be he's he's in it. He's definitely he's a character, Like he's fine. He hasn't been like he's not he's not Sidney Sweeney, Like he didn't get chopped. Yeah, cameo. But it did feel like that storyline wasn't given enough room to breathe. And I understand why because there was so much plot happening, and you want the plot to be with the four main characters, but then to meet for a little uneven at the end when he and like Anne Hathaway's character were having their big moment, I'm like, you guys are acting off these scenes. You've already shot your head, like. 19:12Speaker 2 They haven't had enough moments to have a big moment. 19:14Speaker 1 Yeah, Like, you guys are acting in the way that your characters spend so much time together, but we as the audience haven't seen that, so we're on the back foot with it a little bit. 19:23Speaker 2 And you don't even know him. 19:25Speaker 1 I was like, wait, is that strange man? But yeah, So that's my only note so on that, I would just say, release the director's cut. I would watch a four hour version of this movie, so easily avenge this. Yeah, bring back director's cuts where we get to see the full thing. So obviously more to say next week when we do a b really honest review and you've seen it, I can't wait to hear what you think. 19:45Speaker 2 I don't wait to watch you with my mum. I just rewatched the original. 19:48Speaker 1 Oh and yeah, per person, So The Devil was prot Of too is out in cinemas now, and stay tuned for. 19:57Speaker 2 If you love the Devil's product. I mean, I've just rewatch the original film. If you're on that same bandwagon and you feel like you know everything about it, we actually have a little gift for you. We have developed a Devil west Prada quiz to test your knowledge on the original film. If you want to give it a go. It is a little bit hard, but I felt like I made it through. I think I got like eighty six percent. 20:18Speaker 1 You thought it was okay? 20:20Speaker 2 Bye, Sorry Devil west Prada. I got of course you did. Anyone gets that you let me more than Emily or an LB. If you want to find out, we'll put a link to the quiz in our show notes. 20:31Speaker 1 We should do a quiz out you got. 20:32Speaker 2 Laura, thank you so much for listening to this episode of the Spill. The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 18 — Claire from Ann ArborHey, it's jD. And welcome to the wide open middle of the countdown — that beautiful, feral terrain where deep cuts go to become legends and personal faves start to collide with consensus picks. This week on The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown, I'm joined by one of our most thoughtful and eloquent membersHIPers: Claire from Ann Arbor. We talk about discovering The Hip as a millennial from the U.S., falling hard thanks to Hockey Night in Canada, and how a steady diet of CBC and her dad's hockey tapes led her straight to 50 Mission Cap. (That's right — before she even knew the song, she knew the legend of Bill Barilko. That's parenting done right.)But what really makes this one hit different? Claire's lived experience as a disabled fan navigating concerts, fandom, and feeling safe in the crowd. Her reflections on inclusivity, identity, and finding community through The Hip are honest, funny, moving, and — in true TTHTop40 fashion — a little nerdy in the best possible way. We're not just counting down songs here. We're collecting stories. Claire's is one you'll be glad you heard.

Kailei Jarvis lost her eldest daughter, Serena, to suicide on March 4, 2020. Serena's birthday is July 31, a day that now holds even more significance for Kailei and her family.Described as a “spitfire and moonbeams,” Serena stood at 5 feet 5 inches tall but had a personality that made her seem much taller. She loved animals, anime, spooky and horror themes, comics, and makeup, and was an artist, just like many in her family. She loved her family, friends, and loved ones fiercely. In 2022, what began as a simple idea to get a tattoo on Serena's birthday turned into a fundraising event called "Renapalooza".This event raised $112 for their community's suicide prevention awareness organization, which supports those affected by suicide and raises awareness. This year's event will take place July 27 from 9am-10pm at the State Theater in Logansport, IN and has grown even more, with a bigger venue and three tattoo artists. In addition to the suicide awareness tattoos from previous years, they are also offering tattoos for organ donation, fulfilling Serena's last wish to be an organ donor. The event has also expanded to include music, with seven bands and solo artists performing, and hopes for even more.Kailei is seeking donations for goody bags for those who get tattoos or items for the auction. All proceeds go to a college scholarship in Serena's honor, aimed at C-average students who have survived suicide or are struggling with mental health and are pursuing a career in mental health or as a large animal vet like Serena aspired to be.Kailei's goal is to prevent other parents from experiencing the tremendous grief she has endured and to raise awareness to help prevent suicide.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design with Charles Pavarini III.  Pavarini has reinterpreted the legacy of the Pavarini Construction Company, known for creating historic landmarks including the Seagram Tower, the United Nations, the State Theater at Lincoln Center, and numerous other landmark buildings in New York City and throughout the world. All of his projects hinge around a powerful central design theme and maintain a certain ‘vision' which is always dramatically executed given Charles' keen sense of color, style, and use of lighting as a ‘design tool'. Having sat on the board of directors of the Designer's Lighting Forum of New York for twenty-five years, he has a refined approach to interior design always staged with strong focal points and exacting lighting technique to harness the artistic and architectural vernacular of the spaces he designs. His extensive experience in the Performing Arts as performer, costume designer and set designer qualify him to conceive projects of any scale and proportion with great dignity and an unmatched passion for mood. While that is the bio, it should also be noted that Pavarini co-authored a book that was featured on BookLook. His offering, Lighting Beyond Edison: Brilliant Residential Lighting Techniques in the Age of LED's is truly a transformative look at what is possible in modern lighting and how it works to elevate the design and increase functionality.  We are going to cover this and a great deal more. Our host checks in with us home from his humble abode as Elon Musk nearly destroys Twitter, winter comes to New York in full force and Buffalo gets an unbelievable amount of snow. Oh my! This year, fall didn't happen. It went from summer right into winter. There wasn't even a chance to feel a slight chill in the air. You probably didn't even have a chance to grab your fall jacket. No. It went right into freezing cold weather. How about that crazy amount of snow Buffalo got? Unreal. There's some people in this country who have psychotic amounts of money and just love to play around with it. Elon Musk is one of them. How are you going to take over a company and not know what to do with it? Firing the staff, bringing them back and throwing them in the deep end? Having a vote to decide if the former leader should be allowed on the platform or not? Speaking of the former leader, he decided to announce he's going to be running again. Politicians are already asking people to donate to their campaign again. Really? Give people a break. We just got done with that. Atleast give us until after Thanksgiving. Lewis takes some much needed time off this week and is going on vacation. He's heading up to Vermont this week (instead of traveling internationally) with his friend, Neil. Vermont really is beautiful this time of year. Also, Lewis recently went to a benefit in Bethesda, Maryland for a cystic fibrosis run by his friend Rich. Rich has even started a new organization called the “Luvu Project.” The “Luvu Project” does extraordinary work when it comes to mental health in the workplace. The link is below to check out the project. Also, if you're interested, a link is below to the kickstarter for the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library.
