Ivan Julian has been one of music's most celebrated players and most in-demand collaborators for more than four decades. Indeed, Ivan Julian has spent his life soaking up a wealth of experiences, musical and otherwise. The son of a Navy officer, he grew up in such exotic locales as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, nurturing a sensitive, creative streak that quickly manifested itself musically. At the age of 13, while living in Washington, D.C., he became the singer in a Led Zeppelin cover band; the following year, he began playing guitar. Having already studied bassoon and saxophone, Julian spent his high school years studying music theory as a part-time student in a college program. At 19, his wanderlust led him to London, where he joined U.K. R&B hitmakers The Foundations, (Build Me Up Buttercup) with whom he toured throughout Great Britain and Europe. It was during one of these tours that he decided to stay on in Macedonia to absorb and study the musical scales and rhythms that would have a major influence on his playing. Then Julian returned to the U.S. and settled in New York, just in time to become part of the emerging punk rock movement. A founding member of the seminal Richard Hell and the Voidoids, he was now playing alongside trend-setting punk poet Hell, fabled guitarist Robert Quine and drummer Marc Bell (a.k.a. Marky Ramone). Julian's instrumental and songwriting contributions to the band's classic album Blank Generation established him as one of the scene's most acclaimed and influential axemen. After the Voidoids disbanded, Julian stepped out to form the Outsets as a vehicle for his own vocal and songwriting efforts. Combining rock, funk and African rhythms, the Outsets became a beloved fixture on New York's burgeoning club scene, winning considerable critical acclaim for such releases as the debut single “I'm Searchin' for You”/”Fever,” a self-titled EP produced by Garland Jeffreys and the posthumously released The Punk/Funk Voodoo Collection. Teaming up with Bush Tetras singer Cynthia Sley Julian's next band, the Lovelies, won substantial attention with the release of the Mad Orphan LP. Also, during this time he regrouped with former bandmate Richard Hell to do an extensive tour of Japan. By this point, Julian's abilities as a collaborator had become sought after by a wide array of acts. He plays on “The Call Up” and “Ivan Meets GI Joe” with The Clash (on their Sandinista album), collaborated with Afrika Bambaataa and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic. He also joined England's Shriekback for two tours of North America and Europe. Julian spent much of the 1990s touring and recording with Matthew Sweet. In recent years, Ivan has concentrated mainly on studio work, producing and/or recording artist such as Sean Lennon and producing three albums by The Fleshtones. He's also developed his recording studio, SuperGiraffeSound into one of New York's hottest new recording facilities, working with numerous local, national and international bands. His solo LP, The Naked Flame was named one of the best records of the year by several trade magazines in Europe and the states including Trouser Press. Soon after came The Fauntleroys EP, Below the Pink Pony, a collaboration with Alejandro Escovedo, Nick Tremulis and Linda Pittman. His newest album ‘Swing Your Lanterns' is available on PRAVDA Records. The songs encompass his experiences of the past five years and more; Some of which, we have all lived through. A video-audio rendition of this podcast is available on my Youtube channel here: UCVVqtfTwNVg590TbfndMR_Q Today's guest is bassist Graham Maby. His association with British musician Joe Jackson began in 1973 when they became members of a local Portsmouth cover band. Five years later Jackson's solo recording career took off, with Graham's bass playing front and center on albums like Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. Jackson's biggest-selling album came in 1982, with the million-selling Night and Day. The success of the album firmly established Jackson as an artist and Maby's reputation as a versatile bass player. Since 1983, Graham has lived in the USA. During that time, as well as working on numerous albums and tours with Jackson, he has recorded and performed live with many different artists, among them: Marshall Crenshaw, Natalie Merchant, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Ian Hunter, Freedy Johnston, They Might Be Giants, Henry Lee Summer, the Silos, Graham Parker, Darden Smith, Dar Williams, Garland Jeffreys, Joy Askew, and Regina Spektor. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support
Graham Maby was born on September 1, 1952 and grew up in the small English south coast town of Gosport, near Portsmouth. His musical “awakening” happened at age ten when he heard the Beatles' first single “Love Me Do” on the radio. Six years later he taught himself to play guitar, then bass. His association with British musician Joe Jackson began in 1973 when they became members of a local Portsmouth cover band. Five years later Jackson's solo recording career took off, with Graham's bass playing front and center on albums like Look Sharp! and I'm the Man. Graham co-produced Freedy Johnston's breakthrough album Can You Fly in 1992, and has had small roles in two major movies, Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) and The Joker (2019). He has two children, Claire and Pierce, and now lives with his third wife, Maureen, on Long Island. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-doherty8/support

Lou Reed. Dr. John. Bruce Springsteen. John Cale. Levon Helm. Garland Jeffreys has collaborated with all of them, and his gravelly voice, roots-rock DNA, and trenchant writing has always channeled the best bits of each of them. A recording artist since the 1960s, Brooklyn native Jeffreys has had more career ups (and downs) than most artists can dream of today, but he's riding yet another wave of creativity and energy. His loose and rollicking 2013 album Truth Serum was lauded by critics and fans. He was a 2015 inductee into the New York Blues Hall of Fame, recognizing just one facet of his kaleidoscopic musical persona. All the late-period vigor and recognition has him revisiting one of his earliest successes, 1977's Ghost Writer. A frothing cauldron of, yes, blues, but also soul, funk, Exile-era Stones rock—and an inspired dose of reggae—Ghost Writer revealed a burgeoning, observant poet of the streets as well as a sharp-eared pop chameleon. Garland Jeffreys visits the studio to talk to host John Schaefer about the NYC that inspired Ghost Writer, and to play a handful of the album's standout tracks.
To round our Season 1 of the JNC Podcast, singer/songwriter Rivercat talks about his upcoming album 'Wire & Wood', growing up in the Asbury Park music scene, songwriting, touring with Garland Jeffreys, Southside Johnny and more. He plays a few tunes for us and we talk about current entertainment headlines in the Jordy Files. We put Rivercat through the Lipton Tea interview, Brad gives you your Mid-Week Motivation, and we finish off with our Shameless Plugs. At the age of 75, singer-songwriter Garland Jeffreys continues to rock. The Brooklyn native got his start in New York City's club scene in the mid-60s, and had a breakout hit in the 70s with the single “Wild in the Streets.” He met his best friend Lou Reed while studying art history at Syracuse University, and he recorded with The Velvet Underground's co-founder John Cale before striking out on his own. In 1977, the year his album “Ghost Writer” was released, Rolling Stone pronounced him Best New Artist. In the decades since, Jeffreys has recorded 12 more albums, including last year's “14 Steps To Harlem.” We spoke recently over the phone to talk about protest music, his upcoming show at SOPAC and the song that started it all.
