For the second year in a row, we have decamped to Loyal Legion, a local pub that reliably has one of the best selections of fresh hop beers in town. As we sit here and turn our tongues green, we're going to discuss the hop harvest. Patrick and Jeff went down to Coleman Farms a few weeks back to witness it, and we're going to walk you through the process that takes 20-foot tall bines sunning themselves in the field and turns them into the T-90 pellets breweries use to make beer.
Micah Cawley, HAAS' Midwest Key Account Manager, catches up with Pete Mahony, VP of Supply Chain at HAAS, to discuss the 2022 Hop Harvest Update. Listen in as they cover this year's acreages, the collaboration between HAAS and the Hop Breeding Company (HBC), the effects the brewing industry has on hop purchasing decisions, and the process of hop growing in different regions. Thank you Pete Mahony and Micah Cawley for taking the time and joining the HopCast®. Want to learn more about the hops mentioned in this HopCast or how you can brew with them? Brewers and hop growers are closer today than they ever have been before, but Bale Breaker (https://balebreaker.com)—in the Yakima valley town of Moxee—takes that proximity to a level rarely seen in beer. The brewery literally sits on the Loftus Ranch, in the middle of a hop field, with trellises and bines surrounding the production brewery and taproom. Trellises surround the taproom patio. Trellises stretch out from the parking lot. Hops are everywhere, so it's no surprise that Bale Breaker focuses on hop-forward beers. Brewmaster Kevin Smith started his brewing career on the other side of the cascade range, in Seattle, before returning to the family farm and joining with his sister and brother-in-law to launch the brewery. But through Bale Breaker, he's been able to showcase a hop-forward identity that embraces the crop he grew up around. Hoppy West coast and hazy beers are the brewer's forté, and in this episode, Smith stays focused on hops. In it, he discusses: building a new approach to West coast IPA and pale ale understanding the impact of cohumulone levels on bittering creating unexpected hop blends with underutilized hops like Loral the sensory range driven by pick time in popular hop varieties like Citra and Mosaic dry hopping methods that maximize hop flavor and minimize vegetal matter building a common sensory language in the brewing team selecting and processing hops from the farm and more. This episode of the Beer Here! podcast is all about the fresh hop IPAs. Will discusses the history of the American hop and the podcasters drink beers from Deschutes and Troegs. Our hosts discuss an article that claims that hops may actually help protect our livers from the harmful effects of alcohol (fingers crossed) as well as Uber trying to capitalize on the beer distribution market with their self-driving technology. A rare political discussion is had in regards to recent events with Yuengling and the Trump campaign, followed by discussions on what makes a good breakfast beer. Finally, in a new segment, Will samples a beer blindly and has to figure out what it is. Music as always is 'Son of an American' by The So So Glos. Get out and vote people! Cheers!
