Episode 196 of The Adventure Podcast was recorded online with a live audience, and features Leo Houlding. Leo is, in the simplest of terms, a climber. But really there's so much more to him than that. He's a big wall specialist, an expedition specialist and an alpinist, and he's led a multitude of world class climbing expeditions all over the world from Antarctica to Baffin Island and Greenland to Guyana. Stroom Brouwers, what we would call a craft brewery, is a Belgian independent brewery. Not associated with any abbey or Trappist beers, and not attempting to be either, they are still a Belgian brewery. They just happen to brew a few more options than one would typically expect from a Belgian brewery.Yes, you can still find the beloved Belgian-style beers here, but you'll also find a Norwegian farmhouse ale with a kick of Sichuan peppercorns, a coffee IPA, a Vienna lager, a raspberry sour, and more.Once you step past the industrial entrance, located along the Scheldt River, you'll also find an inviting atmosphere. It's as though you've stepped onto your friend's backyard deck. A deck that just happens to have friendly staff (more than likely a member of one of the owner's families or one of the owners themselves) ready to welcome you in with a selection of craft beers.This craft brewery just happens to be in the medieval city of Gent, Belgium. Welcome to Bikin' Bits - a bit about bikin' - so you don't have to look forever to find the trails you want to ride. Where we tell you the loops to ride, the loopdy-loops to ride, the uphills, the downhills.Where we summarize the trails, so you know exactly where you want to go, how long you want to spend, how much elevation you want to gain and how much descent you want to fly down. And of course there'll be a brewery recommendation or two at the end.Hot Springs, Arkansas and Northwoods TrailsThe Northwoods Trail System is around 3 miles outside of Hot Springs, and is very well maintained and marked, making for fun, flowy rides. With two main sections that connect well together, there are trails for beginners to experts, and all of them are worthy of your time.Here's the Ride!For this ride, we only had a limited time, and we wanted to check out the green trails (and a few blue) to explore what they had to offer. While they are green trails, they were still a lot of fun, making them a great ride with a group of friends with varying levels.Stats: 4 miles, 200 feet of elevation gain, about 40 minutes - perfect for a quick lunch time or afternoon ride, to at least claim some movement before you grab a beer!Start at Waterworks Trailhead at Bee's Knees to Dewdropper. Climb back up Dewdropper to hit Sidecar (a bit of a climb but not punchy) to take you to your choice of going down Cat's Meow or Yaupon Yop.Yaupon Yop is a 1/2 mile down green trail that's fast and flowy with some roller coasty action without any gaps or tables.Cat's Meow is a 1/2 mile down only blue trail allowing you to tear it up for with roller coaster vibes, berms, and intermediate jumps - but can skirt around the jumps - All fun, flowy, awesome!Those two runs join together at an intersection where we went on Freeman (for a short distance) to Sanderson Pass (transitional trails) to your choice of either Funguy (green) or Rockhound (blue). They both meet back down at the bottom together.Funguy is green and just over 1/2 mile but fun, flowy and fast.Rockhound is blue and a mile in length and gets you climbing right out of the gate. You'll ride along a ridgline overlooking the lake and the last 1/3 you can open up into downhill with flowy action along with a couple of switchbacks and a few almost techy rock sections.The last part is Bearcat Pass, a gravel forest road bringing you back to the parking lot where you can even wash your bike. Episode 180 of The Adventure Podcast features adventurer and Parkinson's campaigner, Guy Deacon CBE. Guy is a retired army officer who, towards the end of his career, was diagnosed with Parkinson's. In 2019, Guy embarked on a solo overland expedition from his home in Dorset to Cape Town in South Africa. He wanted to use the journey as a platform to raise awareness and understanding of Parkinson's disease in the UK and throughout Africa, and to expose the prejudice and stigma associated with this illness in Africa. Guy's journey was wracked with issues and problems, not limited to breakdowns, visa issues and a small thing call Covid-19. But despite all this, and living with the reality of Parkinson's disease, Guy just kept going. In this episode, Matt talks to Guy about his early life and military career, before moving onto understanding Parkinson's, what it really is and how it affects people. Guy then talks in detail about his overland expedition and the highs, lows, trips and stumbles that came with it. Denise is one of four pilots for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, where she flies a small Cessna aircraft in rugged terrain conducting wildlife surveys and carrying out fish drops. In this episode, Matt talks to Denise about her life as pilot. She lets us into her past, and explains how she was drawn to flying as a means to escape early trauma. Denise talks about her life outside of work, and her love of trekking to the lakes she's stocked from the air to actually go and fish them. They also discuss what a wildlife pilot does, and the challenges involved. This is a raw and sometimes difficult conversation to hear, but one that is full of meaning and purpose. He had very little knowledge of canoeing prior to leaving for this expedition. He also decided to take his completely inexperienced cousin, Braxton, along for the ride. We're doing what we do best, and Samantha Danen from Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is doing what she does best.Meet Samantha Danen from Third Space BrewingSamantha Danen, Head Production Manager, and the rest of the team at Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are celebrating by teaming up with the Pink Boots Society for its annual collab brew day and beer release of Like a Girl.Sam started homebrewing in college and fell in love with all aspects of beer. As a art history major, it was easy for her to see the art of brewing. She could compare art and beer together. Beer being its own medium.Starting at Third Space in 2020, Sam worked her way up from brewers assistant to where she is now, always appreciating beer and brewing as an art form and a collaborative and welcoming space.Not only is this Sam's story, this is a story for women in the brewing industry. Last year she put up eight first ascents.
