Welcome to Ghent, Belgium, home to Dok Brewing Company, an independent Belgian craft brewery that dares to push boundaries, doing what they want to do on their terms.Belgian beers are known across the globe not only for their sweet flavor profiles but also for their higher alcohol levels. These characteristics define a well-loved style of beer that many brewers attempt to replicate, aiming to transport their consumers to Belgium through the liquid in their glass. We've experienced many fantastic breweries in several countries outside of Belgium that have done just that. We've also experienced Belgian beers in Belgium. Let me tell you, as a beer lover, there's not much better than enjoying a Westvleteren 12 at the source (or as close to it as one can get when one can't access the Abbey itself).Welcome to Dok Brewing in Ghent, BelgiumOr is there? How about finding a Belgian brewery defining Belgian beer on their terms, from a craft beer perspective? Welcome to Dok Brewing, one of Ghent's few independent breweries seeking to introduce more styles to Belgian beer consumers. Not to annihilate its well-earned status on the hierarchy of exquisite beers, but to help bring that history into the future. With a team of four partners, each with unique skill sets, Dok Brewing is changing the game when it comes to brewing beer in Belgium. Of course, you'll find traditional Belgian beers, such as the beloved tripel, but you'll also find historical styles, such as the uitzet, IPAs, stouts, wheats, sours, and so much more. Using ingredients from all over the world, Dok aims to educate its consumers, opening a pathway that goes well beyond the traditional Belgian beers.Meet Janos De Baets, Co-Founder and Head BrewerJoin us as we chat with one of the four partners and Head Brewer at Dok Brewing, Janos De Baets. Janos discovered his love of brewing at a young age when he came across a job posting for a brewer's assistant. He's never looked back. This is his story, Dok's story, and Belgium's story of how craft beer can find its way into a traditional market, becoming not just a player, but a leader. We sat down with Janos on Dok's expansive patio, located in the impressive Hal 16 industrial space in the old Ghent docklands, beer in hand. Not only did we get to experience many of Dok's brews, but also Janos' views on how Belgians see beer and how he and his partners at Dok are working to change that while still respecting the traditional Belgian styles. For all the show notes, including images and more, click here.Connect with Dok Brewing CoDok Brewing Company Dok-Noord 4B, 9000 Ghent, BelgiumInstagramFacebookCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community and fun. To fully appreciate the story of St. Bernardus today, one must first understand the story of its past and how its future is embracing that past while simultaneously laying it to rest. This is the story of Brouwerij St. Bernardus in Watou, Belgium; its history forever intertwined with one of the most famous Trappist beers, Westvleteren XII, brewed at the nearby Saint-Sixtus Abbey brewery.Meet Pieter Verdonck, Story-Teller & Marketing ConsultantPieter Verdonck's official title may be Marketing Consultant for Brouwerij St. Bernardus, but in reality, he is the storyteller and historian of this remarkable Belgian brewery. Pieter speaks eloquently, almost with reverence, about how Westvleteren and the Saint-Sixtus Abbey brewery shifted its roots, holding on to its Trappist origins and giving birth to another brewery that is gaining its foothold within the sometimes confining world of Belgian beers.St. Bernardus' roots may have begun with French cheese-making monks, but its future lies within its beer and the people who believe in it. Pieter's storytelling skills will take you on a journey from France to Belgium, from cheese to beer. Our conversation with Pieter delves into the complex relationship with Brouwerij St. Bernardus and the brewery of the Saint-Sixtus Abbey, known for Westvleteren 12, one of the rarest beers in the world.Westvleteren 12 may be looked upon as the Holy Grail for Belgian beers (maybe even all beers), and St. Bernardus recognizes this; however, they also recognize that from history comes great lessons. The brewers at St. Bernardus are not re-creating a great beer; they are forging a path for the next great beer. Embracing history while crafting their own path as they head into the future.Join us as we chat about this and more, including St. Bernardus, its beer (including its iconic Abt 12), its destination status with its gorgeous guesthouse, the joy of Belgian beer, travel, and so much more. Stroom Brouwers, what we would call a craft brewery, is a Belgian independent brewery. Not associated with any abbey or Trappist beers, and not attempting to be either, they are still a Belgian brewery. They just happen to brew a few more options than one would typically expect from a Belgian brewery.Yes, you can still find the beloved Belgian-style beers here, but you'll also find a Norwegian farmhouse ale with a kick of Sichuan peppercorns, a coffee IPA, a Vienna lager, a raspberry sour, and more.Once you step past the industrial entrance, located along the Scheldt River, you'll also find an inviting atmosphere. It's as though you've stepped onto your friend's backyard deck. A deck that just happens to have friendly staff (more than likely a member of one of the owner's families or one of the owners themselves) ready to welcome you in with a selection of craft beers. This craft brewery just happens to be in the medieval city of Gent, Belgium. Because that just happened to be the city that Farrell, co-owner of Stroom, fell in love with.Meet Farrell Styers, Co-founder at Stroom BrouwersFarrell Styers, Co-founder and Head Brewer at Stroom, never had plans to be a brewer. He never had plans to move to Belgium, either. But we're thankful that this is where his path took him. Playing in punk bands when younger in Denver, he had what he calls a quarter-life crisis. So he moved to Egypt. Then to DC. Then to Kyrgyzstan. So, how did a brewery in Gent come into play? Farrell blames that one on his friend and now business partner. Belgian Carl Uytterhaeghe and American Farrell Styers met in Kyrgyzstan. Years later, Carl asked Farrell the golden question. "What would it look like if we started a brewery?"This is the story behind Stroom. A confluence of beer, family, community, and culture. Join us as we talk about independent breweries in Belgium finding their place amidst historical breweries that have been intertwined in its culture for centuries. We also chat about travel, art, music, sustainability, the story behind the name, and always, the beer that brings us all together.Click here for the full show notes.Connect with StroomStroom BrouwersForelstraat 27Gent, BelgiumInstagramFacebookCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community and fun. Wander inside one of Denver's newest breweries, Wanderment Brewing, and you won't be disappointed. John and Melanie Flaherty, husband and wife team and business partners, alongside their other partner, Sam Odom, have opened up a place that is far from cookie-cutter. This ain't no open-your-box-and-here's-your-brewery, brewery.Wanderment BrewingBorn out of a love for craft beer, music, and a passion for creating something with meaning, Wanderment invites anyone into its space. But if you love a bit of metal music (never too loud, conversation and connections are very important here) while seated on plush stools, surrounded by cozy darkness, this is your third space. But the beer here comes first. As it should. John's love for the science behind the beer combines well with his passion for creativity. Serving up well-crafted beers such as his Flaherty's Dry Irish Stout (he is Irish after all) and his now flagship Vertigo West Coast IPA, amongst many others, Wanderment Brewing aims to please. That aim extends much further than you might think. The dream here is to brew all of the above but also place a focus on rustic ales, meaning saisons and farmhouse ales using mixed culture fermentation giving these beers down-to-earth, complex flavors that will tantalize your taste buds. One of his first forays into this style is his Changing Times Mixed Culture Saison. This ale was aged on dandelion flowers and light French oak, and it was fantastic!Meet John Flaherty of Wanderment BrewingJohn's foray into the craft beer scene was in Florida where his first craft beer was Cigar City's Jai Alai. After experiencing the flavors from that beer, he wanted more, so he ordered a homebrew kit and started brewing - at home and many other breweries throughout Denver. And while software development was his full-time job, which he still works full-time, his dream of brewing professionally has come to fruition at Wanderment Brewing. John is excited about what the future holds for him and his partners. He, Melanie, and Sam will ensure that Wanderment finds its own in Denver, and it will be (and already is) a true gathering place. One where the beer you drink is just as good, if not better, than the friends you'll meet here.Join us as we chat more about Wanderment's future plans and how he got it started in the first place. We'll also talk travel, Oktoberfest, music, and of course, beer.As always, we aim to inspire. So if you're thinking of opening a brewery or you're just a lover of the craft and enjoy the stories behind the beer, tune in for this great conversation with a great human being!Click here for all the show notes.Connect with Wanderment BrewingWanderment BrewingFacebookInstagramCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community and fun. Welcome to Bikin' Bits - a bit about bikin' - so you don't have to look forever to find the trails you want to ride. Where we tell you the loops to ride, the loopdy-loops to ride, the uphills, the downhills.Where we summarize the trails, so you know exactly where you want to go, how long you want to spend, how much elevation you want to gain and how much descent you want to fly down. And of course there'll be a brewery recommendation or two at the end.Hot Springs, Arkansas and Northwoods TrailsThe Northwoods Trail System is around 3 miles outside of Hot Springs, and is very well maintained and marked, making for fun, flowy rides. With two main sections that connect well together, there are trails for beginners to experts, and all of them are worthy of your time. Here's the Ride! For this ride, we only had a limited time, and we wanted to check out the green trails (and a few blue) to explore what they had to offer. While they are green trails, they were still a lot of fun, making them a great ride with a group of friends with varying levels.Stats: 4 miles, 200 feet of elevation gain, about 40 minutes - perfect for a quick lunch time or afternoon ride, to at least claim some movement before you grab a beer!Start at Waterworks Trailhead at Bee's Knees to Dewdropper. Climb back up Dewdropper to hit Sidecar (a bit of a climb but not punchy) to take you to your choice of going down Cat's Meow or Yaupon Yop.Yaupon Yop is a 1/2 mile down green trail that's fast and flowy with some roller coasty action without any gaps or tables.Cat's Meow is a 1/2 mile down only blue trail allowing you to tear it up for with roller coaster vibes, berms, and intermediate jumps - but can skirt around the jumps - All fun, flowy, awesome! Those two runs join together at an intersection where we went on Freeman (for a short distance) to Sanderson Pass (transitional trails) to your choice of either Funguy (green) or Rockhound (blue). They both meet back down at the bottom together.Funguy is green and just over 1/2 mile but fun, flowy and fast.Rockhound is blue and a mile in length and gets you climbing right out of the gate. You'll ride along a ridgline overlooking the lake and the last 1/3 you can open up into downhill with flowy action along with a couple of switchbacks and a few almost techy rock sections. The last part is Bearcat Pass, a gravel forest road bringing you back to the parking lot where you can even wash your bike. Check out northwoodstrails.org for all the details. And of course, you can find this ride and many more on Trailforks. Here's the Beer!Where to drink the beer after biking here? Superior Bathhouse Brewery!Just three miles back into town, you'll hit up Superior, the only brewery in a national park that also happens to brew with the hot springs potable water. Beer, food, bikes, and patio seating! What more can you ask for?Check out Superior Bathhouse Brewery's unique story here.Check out all of the Bikin' Bits podcasts episodes here.Connect With Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. As a craft beer lover, would you consider a wine tour? How about if that wine tour was across the ocean? Say, in places like Croatia, Spain, or even Australia? Gail from Wine Lovers Travel is doing just that - combining her passion for wine and travel and bringing them together to create community.Meet Gail from Wine Lovers TravelIf you've ever considered a group trip to experience a new place, and you want to experience the flavors of that place, Gail understands. That is exactly why she started what she calls her passion project. Which is now a successful tour company that brings people from all over the world together to explore new places, all while enjoying the wines and more of each region.Gail, like many others, began her professional life in corporate sales dealing with software and technology. Lucrative profession? Yes? Satisfying? For Gail, not so much.Knowing at a very young age that she wanted to travel, heading into the corporate world instead, this dream of traveling never left. So after years climbing the corporate ladder, she jumped to a different rung and paved the way for her to finally follow her passion. Along the way, she fell in love with wine. And in 2019, Wine Lovers Travel was born. Then 2020 happened, and like everyone else on the planet, she had to pivot. But it might just have been that pivot that really got her excited about bringing people together over a beverage she loves, wine.We get it. The beverage we love, beer, does the same for us. It's simply the medium that brings people together. And doing that while traveling to explore where these beverages come from, that's more icing on the cake. It's not about the wine (or the beer). This is Gail's story. Of following a passion. Of bringing people together. Of the importance of travel. Of the importance of culture. But really, it's incentive for you to consider a wine tour, even if you're a craft beer lover.Because in the end, you'll learn more about wine, drink craft beer along the way, but more importantly, you'll learn that it's really not about the craft beer (or the wine), it's about the people.Click here for all the show notes.Connect with Wine Lovers TravelWine travels with Gail is not cookie cutter. If you've ever had a dream that doesn't fit the typical dream, this is the episode to listen to. Join us on a beach in Baja, where we sit down with Copper right after The SoulFire Project set us all afire with their light and soul!In 30 minutes you'll be inspired to ditch everything you don't need and follow everything you've always wanted to do. This is Cooper's story and how he turned his dreams into a reality. But more than that, it might just be your inspiration to do the same.Meet The SoulFire ProjectThe SoulFire Project is exactly that - a project - envisioned from a dream that combined travel and artistic endeavors that turned into a reality of global musicians traveling the Americas in a 1979 converted school bus. And just like this isn't any band, this bus isn't just any bus. It's as much of a piece of art and culture as the music is. Running off of vegetable oil and powered by solar, the iconic and highly recognizable bus is a home just as much as it is a creative space. But it is also a way for the entire team to live sustainably, from the fuel used in the bus to the food they eat, to the waste expended. As Cooper says, “It's important for us as responsible human beings to live in the most sustainable way that we can, and now we're doing this nomadically.”Gaining experience and perspective all along their journeys, The SoulFire Project embraces inspiring musical styles. Taking inspiration both from the music and the musicians, their genre is a Mestizo World Fusion of styles the likes of Cumbia, Reggae, Afro-Latin, and more.Meet Cooper Morgan, Instigator of The SoulFire ProjectAnd it all began with a two month trip.Cooper Morgan, the self-defined instigator and creative force behind The SoulFire Project, is the songwriter, the vocalist, guitarist, and sometimes even a percussionist. He's also the mechanic and aspiring engineer of sorts to setup and maintain the bus they all live and travel in.That two month trip turned into 11 months and then into a future born from a dream, from travels, and from artists met along the way. With a guitar and a full tank of gas, Cooper realized he had everything he needed to create a life he loved.Click here for all the show notes including images and more links.Connect with The SoulFire ProjectThe SoulFire Project Spotify YouTube Apple Music Facebook InstagramCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community, fun, and more in Hot Springs, Arkansas May 16-20, 2024! Crossing the border into Baja, there were no plans of joining other travelers and van-lifers while we journeyed south to experience as much of Baja as we could in the two short months that we were there.Turns out, though, as our travels often do, that we became a part of a van-life community that was about much more than just finding the beautiful places. This community of van-lifers and travelers gets you lost in the moment all while helping you find exactly where you're supposed to be, even if you didn't know you were looking for it in the first place. The Journal of Lost Time: Van-Life GatheringsJosiah and his team at the Journal of Lost Time do exactly that, all while welcoming everyone in: travelers, van-lifers, locals, dreamers, activists, pretty much anyone who is excited about all that the beautifully odd human race has to offer all across the globe. These van-life, traveler gatherings create community through local art, food, music, dance, beer, and the pure joy of finding a community while enjoying the freedom of the open road.Meet Josiah Roe from The Journal of Lost TimeThis cowboy hat wearing, travel loving, event producing person is much more than just those titles. Josiah Roe is the brain behind events that celebrate the joy that people find when they come together to be...well, just together. His van-life events are held all across the globe with one main goal - a celebration of community.Temporary villages of locals, nomads, van-lifers, and overlanders gathered together in celebration of community, and community in beautiful places. Because, as The Journal of Lost Time community says, "We go further, together."Whether you're looking for community on the road or you're an event planner yourself, listening to Josiah will get you pumped either way. He has a passion for creating connections while advocating for the places those connections are made in, and that's just the beginning. Yes, the events he hosts are about bringing people together, but doing so is also about doing it in a way that attendees are always welcomed back and travelers and locals learn from each other, making lasting connections.Click here for all the show notes including images and more links.Connect with Josiah and Find Events by the Journal of Lost TimeThe Journal of Lost TimeInstagramFacebookAll EventsCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community, fun, and more in Hot Springs, Arkansas May 16-20, 2024! International Women's Day is March 8, and we're celebrating it like a girl, beer in hand, mountain bikes in between our legs. Ok, maybe not riding while drinking, but you get the picture. We're doing what we do best, and Samantha Danen from Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is doing what she does best.Meet Samantha Danen from Third Space BrewingSamantha Danen, Head Production Manager, and the rest of the team at Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are celebrating by teaming up with the Pink Boots Society for its annual collab brew day and beer release of Like a Girl.Sam started homebrewing in college and fell in love with all aspects of beer. As a art history major, it was easy for her to see the art of brewing. She could compare art and beer together. Beer being its own medium.Starting at Third Space in 2020, Sam worked her way up from brewers assistant to where she is now, always appreciating beer and brewing as an art form and a collaborative and welcoming space. Not only is this Sam's story, this is a story for women in the brewing industry. A story about collaboration bringing women back into the fold of a story they began hundreds of years ago. About Pink Boots Society and Pink Boots Collab Brew DaySam's recipe for the Pink Boots Collab Brew Day, Like a Girl, resonates that belief in all aspects of the process. As a former Pink Boots Chapter Head and current member, Sam loves bringing women together to brew beer. It's educational, but more importantly, it builds community and gives women a voice in a male dominated industry.Pink Boots Society ensures that women have a place in craft beer today. An international organization for women and nonbinary individuals who work in the fermented beverage industry, Pink Boots Society provides educational opportunities for their members. Their biggest fundraiser is their collaborative brew day centered around International Women's Day.Drink Like a GirlLet's continue the conversation. Talk about women in brewing. Use you voice. Ask questions. Be curious. And if you love beer, by all means, drink Like a Girl. After all, beer is actually a girly drink. Thanks, Alewives! You've paved the path, and we're finally getting back on it. Sometimes you just need a good beer, and some of the best beer in La Paz, Baja California Sur, can be found at a beer bar. Welcome to Amonia Cervecería, a La Paz beer bar worthy of your time.Meet Nico from Amonia CerveceríaNico Perez Prieto is one of the co-founders and co-owners of Amonia Cervecería, a La Paz craft beer bar and bottle shop. It may be located off the beaten path away from La Paz's Malecón, but is still a must stop on any beer lover's itinerary.Sourcing beers from all over Mexico and the world, Nico and the entire team at Amonia Cervecería work to impress, not just to pour beer. With their knowledge of craft beers, your taste buds are sure to find a beer you love. Nico pretty much guarantees it. Previously working at Pacific Brew and helping a friend at a beer festival, Nico quickly gained a passion for craft beer. His entrepreneurial spirit ultimately brought him and his partner together to open Amonia, one of La Paz's best craft beer bars and bottleshops. But that's not all. Nico is now one of the forerunners in not only La Paz, but also Baja and Baja Sur, in the creation of local beer festivals and brewing up a burgeoning homebrewing community. And while only around two percent of the population of La Paz drink craft beer, Nico doesn't look at this figure as a negative. He looks at it as a lot of room to grow. And it is doing just that.Join us as we chat with Nico about Baja and Baja Sur's craft beer scene, his passion behind it, and his love of bringing good beer from all over the world to the places and people he loves.Click here for the full show notes, images, links, and more.Stay Connected with Amonia CerveceríaAmonia CerveceríaCalle Sinaloa 1120, Las Garzas, 23060 La Paz, B.C.S., MexicoInstagramCheck out Camp Carpe DiemCheck out https://campcarpediem.com for all the community, fun, and more in Hot Springs, Arkansas May 16-20, 2024! Michel, Vivian, and Hiram, are not just every day people. These three along with their team, make up two La Paz craft breweries: Black Marlin Brewing Co and Pacific Brew. And while these three wonderful humans are brewers, owners, and entrepreneurs, more importantly, they are all also friends. And isn't that what craft beer is actually about? Community and friendship over a damn good beer? Exactly, and that is why we were lucky enough to chat with the three them together to learn more about Black Marlin Brewing Co and Pacific Brew. But to also learn more about the stories behind the people that have a passion for craft beer in Baja.Meet Michel and Vivian from Black Marlin Brewing CoMichel originally started Black Marlin as a cold brew coffee company. And then he met Hiram who had yet to open Pacific Brew. Hiram wanted to know if Michel had ever brewed beer before. Starting with a Mr. Brew Kit, Michel and Hiram gave it a go.Michel, a crossfit competitor and car lover, he figured why not also open a brewery and restaurant. Eventually he and Hiram excelled beyond that initial Mr Brew. They purchased a kettle used to make tamales, modified it for brewing, and then roped Vivian into the mix. And as they say, the rest is history.Vivian, a competitive skateboarder, architect, and designer, helped design and build out both taprooms. Studying culinary arts, with a dream to open an Italian restaurant, he fell in love with craft beer instead, forever changing the Baja craft beer scene alongside Michel and Hiram.Meet Hiram from Pacific BrewWorking at a bottle shop and then with Michel at Black Marlin Brewing Co, Hiram knew he wanted more than just a job. Along came his business partner, Adam, who asked if Hiram knew how to brew - he did. Voila! The two of them began planning a La Paz brewery of their own. Welcome to Pacific Brew.La Paz Craft BreweriesThis is the story behind two La Paz craft breweries. Each unique. Each contributing to the expansion of the La Paz and Baja California Sur craft beer scene. And while the two breweries have their own style and ambiance, all of the friends who own, brew, and operate these Baja Sur breweries, are supportive of each other, their families, their goals, and the growth of a city they all love.Welcome to craft beer in La Paz, Baja California Sur, where beer is just the instrument that gets the people together.Click here for the full show notes, images, links, and more.Stay Connected with Black Marlin Brewing CoBlack Marlin Brewing CoBelisario Domínguez 1249-C, Zona Central, 23000 La Paz, B.C.S., MexicoInstagramStay Connected with Pacific BrewPacific BrewBelisario Domínguez 1430, Zona Central, 23000 La Paz, B.C.S., MexicoInstagramConnect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Is there really anything better than pizza and beer with friends? Only if that pizza and beer with friends is in a home overlooking the stunning Colombian city of Medellin with the owners of Bufona Cervecería Colombiana, a craft brewery in the heart of Medellin, Colombia.Welcome to Bufona CerveceríaWelcome to Bufona, one of the newest cervecerías artesanales in Medellín, Colombia. With a patio located directly on the sidewalk in El Poblado, a bustling neighborhood of bars, eateries, shops, and a vibrant night life, this intimate taproom is not one to be passed by.Especially when you consider the meaning of the name, Bufona. Roughly translating to the likes of jesters or entertainers, Bufona Cerveceria Artesanal is exactly that. A place to get out of the hustle of everyday life. The goal here is community.Meet Daniel and TomasA passion for community and purpose always, beer didn't enter the picture until later. In fact, Tomas, cofounder and self titled finance guy of Bufona, didn't even like beer at first. Although he did become a bottle collector. As for liking beer now? There's no doubt.Daniel, cofounder and brewer, on the other hand, liked beer since he started drinking in university. He never imagined, though, that he would become a professional brewer. The two met in high school. Tomas went on to university and became a psychologist. Daniel went on to university to study mechanical engineering. However, not finding the passion for it that he had envisioned, he took off traveling instead. It was on those travels that he happened upon a beer bar in South Africa where he fell in love with all the flavors of beer. Coming back to Colombia, Daniel couldn't find those flavors, so he started brewing them. And since when owning a brewery you have to also make money, it made sense for the two of them to come together.Although Daniel jokes that there's a lot more to owning a brewery than simply brewing.“When you're just starting, we are not a brewery, we are a cleaning service that occasionally brews.”And for anyone that knows brewing, there's not a much truer statement than that.Their goals for Bufona are as big and beautiful as their country is. Ophelia, their biggest cheerleader and Tomas's girlfriend sums up their mission with a fierce confidence."It's about building a country with the beer."Join us as we sit in Daniel's living room, comfortably seated on the floor with the coffee table holding the best centerpieces ever: Bufona beers, pizza from a local joint, and an impressive array of chips. While taking in the beauty of the city below through the homes' impressive expanse of windows, we chat like we've been friends forever. About Medellín's beer scene. About obtaining hops and malts. About the community that Bufona is creating one beer at a time. The Colombian craft beer scene is one that deserves to be recognized. And one of those Colombian craft breweries is located in the heart of Medellín.Welcome to Sierra Blanca Cerveceriá, where the beer is fantastic and the people are even better. This is Sierra Blanca Cerveceria's story, but it's also a story that belongs to Medellín's craft beer scene just as much. The Wonders of Medellín, ColombiaMedellín is a thriving city full of a diverse group of people consisting of locals, expats, digital nomads, and tourists. Many of them looking for the next best thing to experience, the next best dish to savor, or, if you're like us, the next best beer to write home about. And while the Medellín craft beer scene is about ten years behind the craft beer scene in the States, it is thriving just as much as the city is. And people here are beginning to appreciate the wonders of craft beer alongside the wonders of this culturally vibrant city.Meet Carlos from Sierra Blanca CerveceriáCarlos, owner and head brewer at Sierra Blanca Cervecería is helping that appreciation for craft beer along quite nicely. A conference interpreter turned brewer and brewery owner, Carlos has visited many countries. Places like Panama, Chile, the U.S., Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and more. And along the way he fell in love with beer. So when the pandemic hit and his conference travels slowed down, it was a given. Time to brew more and dial it in. And that he did. The result?Carlos now heads up one of the best breweries in Medellín with a focus on local ingredients. He and other brewers in Colombia are working hard at creating a craft beer scene that is distinctly Colombian. And that includes the welcoming personas of the Colombian people along with the flavors native to the countryside. Flavors such as passion fruits (of which there are many) and tomate arbol (a fruit which roughly translates to tree tomato.Inspired by his Latin American roots, Carlos loves to be unique and creative. He brews saisons, barrel-aged beers, and even chichas (a corn-based brew dating back to the Inca era), alongside the more typical craft beers such as IPAs, ambers, and more. So, grab a beer. Join us as we chat with Carlos about the Colombian craft beer scene and how Medellín craft beer fits into it. But also, and more importantly, about how beer brings people together across aisles, countries, and cultures. For the complete set of show notes, including connections, images, and the beer we drank, click here.Relevant Links:To connect with Sierra Blanca, click here.To learn more and register for Camp Carpe Diem, click here.To learn more about visiting Medellín, click here.To learn more about Harvest Hosts, click here.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. What do you get when you put two brothers, a dog, and beer together? Sounds like a recipe for a story in the making. And that is exactly how ÖlBröder Cerveza Artesanal in Medellín, Colombia, was crafted. From two brothers with a passion for a challenge, a desire to create beer with a Colombian flair, and a story behind all that they brew. This is one story behind the many craft breweries in Medellín, ColombiaFinding Craft Breweries in Medellín, ColombiaVisiting Medellín with a goal of experiencing a different culture than the U.S., we also knew we wanted to seek out the craft beer scene. Not knowing where to start, we did what any traveler does in the 21st century - googled it. And after finding some widely known and widely distributed breweries - but not so widely considered cervecería artesanals (craft breweries), we finally made it to ÖlBröder, an intimate craft brewery in the heart of Medellín. While they may not have an impressive wall of taps, what they do have is uniquely crafted brews, many using local ingredients, and all solid in their styles.Meet Julian from ÖlBröder Cerveza ArtesanalFrom the moment we walked into ÖlBröder, we knew we wanted to find out more. So when we got the chance to sit down with Julian, one of the brothers, we didn't hesitate. Former engineer and teacher, Julian now gets to bring both of those careers back to the forefront as a brewer. And his passion for all of the above is evidenced in the beer he brews, the joy he gets out of educating his customers, and the ambiance of his community-minded taproom.Ironically, though, when he first started brewing, Julian didn't even like beer. But he took on the personal challenge of brewing because he loved the process, consequently falling in love with the process, and ultimately, the beer.Gone to the Dogs at ÖlBröder Cerveza ArtesanalEvery brewery needs a brewery dog, and ÖlBröder is no different. Meet Duna, the third brother. Found wandering the streets as a puppy, this little black dog needed a home, and Julian obliged. While she has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge, her memory lives on through the artwork in the taproom and the beer we drink while conversing and laughing with friends. Every beer name has a story, and these beer names have all gone to the dogs.Take a trip with us to Medellín's craft breweries, and listen in as we talk to Julian all about the story behind his brewery, behind the name, and behind the beers. You'll learn a bit about how breweries function in Colombia, and how Julian and his brother create a community that is distinctly Colombian, welcoming in locals, tourists, ex-pats, and digital nomads - bringing them all together with tastings, language meet-ups, music, and more. RV events are one way to build community on the road, but when you pair those RV events with craft breweries and beer, like Camp Carpe Diem, you get more than just a meet and greet, you get lifetime friendships. And that is exactly how Traveling Gatherings came to fruition - an idea of putting RV events together in one place, making it easy to find community while living an RV lifestyle. Actually it was literally a dream come true.Meet Michael Andersen of Traveling GatheringsMichael Andersen, founder of Traveling Gatherings, like many of us who decide to go the unconventional route and live in an RV, didn't quite have his RV career path figured out before taking off across roads unknown. He figured it out along the way. Purchasing a shuttle bus in 2019 and converting it into a camper was a step in the right direction for an RV lifestyle, but that lifestyle didn't happen until after 2020. And we all know what happened in 2020.An event planner by trade, working in the hospitality industry, 2020 all but wiped that career out for the next couple of years, making the transition into an RV lifestyle quite an easy choice. Michael and his girlfriend, Andrea, along with their dog, Bruce, decided they would travel for a year. Now nine months into that plan, they have also decided they're nowhere near done.RV Events, RV Stories, & RV Advice (Breweries, Too)But what to do when your modeling career is over and you're not rich? (OK, no modeling career ever happened.) The answer? Go to sleep. At least that's what worked for Michael. Waking up one morning after dreaming about creating an RV event website, that is exactly what he did.And this is his story. And it's a story that resonates with many travelers along with wannabe travelers. But what you will find are two passionate brewers all about the classics. Located in the burbs of Memphis, Meddlesome Brewing Company brings together community over good, classic beers. The two shared recipes and entered into brewing competitions with nothing but passion and community on their side. It was that passion and DIY style of homebrewing that ultimately led them to open Meddlesome.Classic Beers with a Side of ChaosWith inspiration to meddle with the gimmicks and trends of craft brewing, Ben and Richie set out with a goal to give beer drinkers good classic beers. But that's not to say, they don't like to F**k Around and Find Out (which is a name of their pepper beer), because what's more meddlesome than also adding a bit of chaos into the scene. On that note, Meddlesome isn't interested in what everyone else is doing They're interested in making beers for the people that show up for them and making sure everyone around has something to satisfy them. Join us as we chat all the above and more giving you a glimpse into Ben and Richie's world. Celebrating Earth Day once a year is not enough. How about an entire month? Yes, Earth Day is in April, so you could consider April also being Earth Month. But in reality, everyday should be Earth Day. And it is in that spirit, that we are talking with Roadhouse Brewing in regards to sustainable breweries. But what does sustainable really mean? And how do breweries fit into that picture?Meet Jon from Pure Madness Brewery GroupHaving really only a superficial understanding of how a brewery can be considered a sustainable brewery - Meaning they use solar, repurpose their spent grains, recycle waste products, and do their best to treat the planet with kindness and respect - We wanted to delve deeper into what being a sustainable brewery means. That is why we sat down with Jon Courtois, Director of Operations (and my newly assigned title for him - Sustainability Guru) at Pure Madness Brewery Group. Pure Madness oversees two craft breweries: Roadhouse Brewing Company in Jackson Hole and Melvin Brewing in Alpine, Wyoming.Jon works in the brewing industry, but he is also in love with the outdoors. Meaning he, along with all of us, has a reason to care about how our beloved beer impacts our beloved planet. An avid snowboarder, living in the Jackson Hole surrounding area, Jon understands first hand why the two breweries under Pure Madness group are working so hard at being sustainable.B Corp Brewery: Above and Beyond SustainabilityBut that's not where they stop. Roadhouse is actually one of a very few B Corp Certified Breweries in the U.S. What that means to you and me as consumers is that we're getting some of the best tasting beer that also happens to be some of the best for the environment.Officially, B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Jon about what it means for the team at Roadhouse (with Melvin soon to be following suit), the consumers, and the community to be a B Corp Certified Brewery. Because it's more than just a title. In Jackson Hole, it's a way of life.Roadhouse Brewing and Jackson HoleNot only do we talk about what it means to be a sustainable brewery and B Corp Certified, but we also chat about what it means to be a brewery located in Jackson Hole. With brand ambassadors, partners such as Teton County Search and Rescue, and an entire community that rallies around Mother Nature and damn good beer, Roadhouse embraces sustainable living. And then there's the beer. Of course, we talk beer! Tune in to learn all about their Kush series beer, with the first one being released in partnership with B Corp Certified partners. Those partners are: Creature Comforts Brewing Co in GA , Mainstem Malt, and Roy Farms - all B Corp Certified partners. For the complete set of show notes, including connections, links, and images, click here. And don't forget to sign up for Camp Carpe Diem - It's going to be epic! And of course there'll be a brewery recommendation at the end.Sweetwater Trails in TucsonBelieve it or not, there's some great desert riding in the Tucson area, and Sweetwater Preserve is one of the best. While there are no black trails at this trail system, it's worth your time even if you're an expert rider, which we are not. The trails here are rocky, but somehow they still manage to be flowy and fun.But fair warning, we think the plant life might be out to get you anywhere in Arizona. Those cacti can be trouble if you happen to fall into one, so bring the tweezers, just in case! No, we didn't have to use them...yet.Here's the Ride!Start at the main trailhead by heading right on Saguaro Vista. From there, you'll basically take right hand turns at every intersection. This will keep you in a loop. And by doing this, you'll hit almost every trail on this system. There are a couple of left hand turns to make sure you do hit all of the trails.Basically our ride followed the recommended ride on Trailforks, Tour de Sweetwater. This route is around 13 miles with about 800 feet of elevation gain, and we took about 90 minutes to ride it. Be sure to stop and enjoy the views. Can you imagine walking into a brewery and being served by Peter Bouckaert himself? It could happen. And according to his business partner, who also happens to be his wife, we can chalk up that possible scenario to his funny face. Not that his face is funny; it's actually quite normal. However, when Peter gets the itch to be moving on to something new - he loves learning and has no use for boredom - Frezi reports that he gets this funny look on his face. One that she knows well.Join us as we chat with the partners of Purpose Brewing & Cellars. Not only do we talk beer and the stories behind the beer, but we delve deeper into the hunt for barrels and the evolution of sour beers, which outside of the U.S., have been around for more than ten thousand years. We touch on travel and the impact that travel and culture has on crafting beers and building a brewery. We talk about Purpose, its logo full of intention (and purpose) and the unique take on the beers that are brewed, aged, and served there. But more importantly, we simply have a fun conversation while enjoying each other's company, hands wrapped around a damn fine beer. There's space at the table. Spending time in nature through outdoor education and adventures are brilliant ways to create success in a technologically advanced world. We realize that this statement is highly ironic. However, the more we connect to natural places and build relationships with the natural world, the better we are able to handle all the s**t the "real world" throws at us.Meet Ford Church, Founder of Cottonwood InstituteFord Church, the Founder and Executive Director of Cottonwood Institute (CI) is one of the lucky ones. From a young age, he was exposed to the natural world (the real world) while growing up in New Orleans.Knowing how nature had an impact on him throughout his formative years, he knew he wanted to have an impact on kids in the future. He knew he wanted to change the world by ensuring that kids had the chance to get into nature so they then would have a reason to care for it.Changing the Wold through Survival in Nature and BusinessCottonwood Institute is an educational nonprofit based in Denver created from a passion project and a college thesis over a decade ago. But it is much more than that. Ford has gone above and beyond a typical nonprofit. He believes in building a foundation for kids that connects them to nature to ultimately give them the skills to succeed in the "real world".This is Ford's story about Cottonwood Institute, yes. But it's actually a story for anyone wanting to follow a dream. Ford can tell you how to survive in the woods - and we talk about that - but he can also tell you how to survive in business - we talk about that, too. You'll learn a lot from Ford, but more importantly, you'll be inspired. That's just what he does.Click here for the complete show notes, including outdoor education resources and an upcoming event.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. BrewDog was founded in Scotland in 2007 by two friends, Martin Dickie and James Watt. From the beginning their "punk" attitude has had a tremendous impact on the company, their beers, and their followers, us included.Meet Martin Dickie, Co-Founder of BrewDogGrowing up in a fishing - or was it farming - we think it was fishing - or was it farming? You'll have to tune in to understand. At any rate, Martin grew up in Scotland and knew from a young age he wanted to be a distiller. Obviously that changed.Once he embraced his brewing calling, he had dreams "of an incredible looking brewery that was semi-automated." Yeah, that dream has become a reality. Today there are more than 100 BrewDog locations around the world including pubs, breweries, hotels, and more. Producing close to one million hectoliters of beer per year (about 839,000 barrels), BrewDog is no small pup.Anybody can look up the facts and figures surrounding BrewDog, so we delved deeper into Martin's life. How he knew he wanted to be a distiller. and why he changed his career path, which seemed like it was to be his destiny. We wanted to know more about the punk attitude and why BrewDog had this desire to brew the biggest beers on the planet. BrewDog has laid claim to the world's highest ABV at one time or another. We got to sit back in a suite in the Doghouse - the world's first brewery hotel (Click here to learn a bit more about BrewDog's DogTap Columbus, home to the Doghouse.), beer in hand, AGM raging just outside, and chat with Martin about life and beer. Jeremiah Johnson isn't your typical American craft beer story. And neither is he the man from the movie. He is, though, the man from Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company in Great Falls, and now Whitefish, Montana. And we've got his story.Meet Jeremiah JohnsonNot one to be all work and no play, Jeremiah Johnson has always strived to create an environment for himself, his family, and his work team that embodies that same ideal. So when it came time for him to figure out his path in life, he was willing to take chances while accepting serendipitous encounters. It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that he didn't find his passion for beer by brewing at home in his garage. And neither did he go to school to become an engineer finding himself, instead drawn to beer.In fact, Jeremiah initially worked in sales and marketing and then economic and real estate development. When Jeremiah and Katie, his wife, finally decided to jump into the craft beer business, it was out of love for the beverage, but even more so about a passion for entrepreneurship.Intertwined together and created out of a passion for Montana, craft beer, and entrepreneurship, the brewery and the man are crafting history in Montana and beyond. Join us as we chat - always craft beer - but also Montana life, family life, and taking chances while accepting what is often right in our path. For the complete set of show notes click here.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Have you ever rounded a corner and then stopped dead in your tracks? That's almost what we did when driving to Cartridge Brewing in Maineville, just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Located in an old munitions factory, the twisty road leading to Cartridge is one for the books, but when you round that final turn and your eyes rest upon two magnificent spires towering above this massive once-bustling-now-refurbished factory, yeah - it's a sight to behold. Especially when it houses a brewery.Meet Adam Mills, Head Brewer at Cartridge BrewingAdam thought the same thing. The history behind the building that houses Cartridge Brewing was one of the reasons he moved his family of eight from Michigan to Ohio. Well, that, and he was excited to take on the position of head brewer, where he could brew the beers he loved to brew.Adam's excitement for brewing stems from the technical aspects of the science behind brewing. It is because of that, when visiting Cartridge Brewing you'll be awed by the impressive structure of the both the building and the beers. His story, while not one quite for the history books as much as the building holds, it is still one of history, so to say. Straight out of high school, he headed to college. Graduating with a history degree, for the next 10 years he taught at-risk kids. While teaching he fell in love with homebrewing. We like to joke that his students drove him to drink, but we'll let him tell you the actual truth of that story.Join us as we chat history, teaching, brewing, and of course beer! Oh, and did we mention that Adam is also a YouTube star? He is. Not one to ever stop learning or teaching, he created his YouTube channel to share resources, ideas, recipes, and more. Meant for novices and pros alike, this is a brewing channel you won't want to miss. So, when done listening to his story here, head on over to Adam Makes Beer. This day is going to be one for the history books! For the complete set of show notes, including the beers we drank, click here.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Good beer matters. At least we think so. Actually a lot of people think so, but why? And why should we learn about why good beer matters? Because beer is about more than just the beer. It's about talking across the aisles, listening to opinions, learning how to take criticism, and learning all along the way. Wait? Are we talking about beer or life? Both. And that is exactly what matters to Jeremy Storton.Meet Jeremy from Good Beer Matters.Anyone who has ever taught anything knows that the more you teach, the more you learn. Jeremy Storton, host of the award winning podcast, Good Beer Matters, is doing just that. Once a classroom teacher, he took his love for education and transitioned it into his passion for craft beer. Along the way he learned that he could help guide others in their search for passion in both beer and life. Beer after all, in Jeremy's words, “is full of craft and culture, and he wants to help you get to the bottom of it." And that is exactly what we attempt to do in our conversation with Jeremy - get to the bottom of it, and learn more about why good beer matters. Through stories about his beginnings with craft beer, we've confirmed our suspicions that Jeremy has a passion for all things beer, but more importantly, he has a passion for sharing his insights and knowledge gained while on his quest to figure out his place in the world. And while that is about craft beer, it runs so much deeper than that. Beer became a way for him to relate to people and the world. "The world of beer is vast and wonderful and there is more out there to explore."For the complete set of show notes, click here.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. The Sioux Falls craft beer scene forever changed when Stacey and Dan arrived into town for some covert operations - Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars, that is. This unique brewery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is beginning to take root in this up and coming midwestern craft beer location. And by taking root we do mean by grabbing hold and sticking around, but what we really mean is that they are using these roots - and other local flora and natural ingredients - to brew their innovative and high quality craft beers. Covert ops, I'm telling' ya!Meet Stacey and DanBoth Stacey and Dan come from military backgrounds, covert operations, in fact. Hence, the name of Covert and their colorful fox-like logo. Their beer careers, though, are only just beginning. And what a beginning it is. From former intel analysts to world travelers to now some of the most creative brewers (not to mention a blast to hang with), Stacey and Dan Berry aren't just owners and brewers of Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars, they are the real deal when it comes to beer. This is their story of resilience both in their past and present moments. You'll hear stories of Stacey's travels just after 9/11 and how the world reacted to her in a foreign country at that time and then how she reacted to the world. You'll hear stories of Dan's quest to brew the beers they both love and their further quest to get the midwest on board with beers that aren't your typical lagers. And throughout all of the stories, their love of beer and passion for life will resonate within you. And if not, it will inspire you to at least get off the comfort couch and drool along with us while we drink and talk our way through Covert's inventory of exceptionally and uniquely brewed beverages.Click here for the full show notes, including a few pics, events, and all the beers we drank.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Sever your ties in South Dakota, just don't sever them from South Dakota. With 44 craft breweries and counting, and several of them located in the southeast corner of the state, the Sioux Falls craft beer scene may just need to be your next craft beer destination. So, sever your ties with the idea that South Dakota isn't about the beer. With Severance Beer Company on the scene, it's most definitely about the beer. And the people, too.The Sioux Falls craft beer scene changed because of a Xmas gift. When your given a home-brew gift for a Christmas gift, do you take that as a hint to create something bigger, or do you just brew a batch of beer and move on with your life? Scott Heckel, owner and brewer at Severance Brewing Co, took his Christmas gift to heart.Meet Scott and Melissa of Severance Brewing Co.Scott and Melissa Heckel may have never thought they were going to own a brewery, but all it took was a job that had Scott dreading Monday mornings and a Christmas gift of a homebrew kit. When the stars didn't align as originally planned, the brewery idea was put off for the foreseeable future. But Scott was able to see the silver lining and used this time as a chance to build his own severance package. And when the time finally came for him to quit his corporate job, he literally severed his ties, both with his previous career and with scissors to cut his ties. Changing from a suit into shorts and a t-shirt, on April 1, 2019, Scott walked out of his office and went directly into his brewery. And with Melissa on board as his partner and marketing team, the two may be working more now than they ever have - being parents, too - they're working for themselves. And so far, neither of them are dreading Monday mornings.Join us as we chat beer, severing ties, and not waiting for someday. We also talk about sustainability practices in the brewing process, a bit about music, and the South Dakota craft beer scene. Because after everything that these two have going on, Scott is also the current President of the South Dakota State Brewers Guild. Soulcraft Brewing. For those that know Salida, you know Soulcraft. For those that don't, it's time you do. Salida, Colorado. A Colorado mountain town that has it all: rafting, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, and one of the best craft beers scenes in a town of 7,000 people. Meet Mike LaCroix, owner of Soulcraft BrewingThose formative years spent in middle school have a lot to say. Meet Mike LaCroix, who listened to his middle school self, knowing from a young age that he wanted to be a brewer. It's no surprise then, that the name of his brewery was also inspired by his teen years of listening to hardcore and punk.Initially starting his brewing career in the long gone Silver Plume Brewery, moving on to a long career as head brewer at Amica's in Salida, he recognized a need for more beer. Voila! Soulcraft Brewing was crafted. Being one of the OG's on the craft beer scene in Salida, Mike has made a name for himself both in the craft beer industry and in his now hometown of Salida, Colorado. This is Salida's craft beer story, too. This is Salida's craft beer story as much as it is his own. Welcome to Knoxville, Tennessee, where the beer flows just as easy as the country music, the whiskey, and the rolling hills. Where Will Rutemeyer finally realized his true calling to become a brewer. Where Balter Beerworks found its roots in classic brews, handcrafted foods, and community gatherings. This is a Will's story as much as it is Balter's story. For without the other, neither would be quite the same. And Knoxville wouldn't be either.Meet Will Rutemeyer from Balter BeerworksGrowing up in Chattanooga, Will's parent's were friends with the owners of Chattanooga Brewing Co. So at a young age, Will was exposed to the art of brewing. Not quite sure yet what path he wanted to follow, off to college young Will went, graduating with degree in hand to land himself in a corporate job hidden amidst the cubicles. Quickly learning that this was not the path he wanted to follow, he began his journey back to brewing. Crossing paths with another that was also looking to get into the brewery business, a new path was forged. One built on well-balanced classic beers to match the lifestyle that so many struggle to create. So while we all may be a bit out of balance when it comes to that ever elusive work/life balance, visiting Balter Beerworks in Knoxville, Tennessee, may just be the weight needed to bring us back to center. At least for that moment that we are enjoying the beers that pair well with the food while gathering with friends.Join us as we chat all the above and attempt to give you, our listeners, a bit of unsolicited advice about how to create a work/life balance that fits your lifestyle. When you hear Kentucky, you probably think bourbon, but what you really should be thinking about is Kentucky beer...and bourbon. Oh, and you definitely can't forget the Kentucky Derby. And that, my dear beer loving friend, is what Gallant Fox Brewing Company in Louisville, Kentucky, is all about. Kentucky Beer, Kentucky Bourbon, and the Kentucky Derby. Welcome to the fourth episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Roger Huff from Gallant Fox Brewing CoRoger Huff and his business partner, Patrick Workman came together over some serious homebrewing. Combining that with their love of Kentucky, Gallant Fox Brewing Co became a reality in 2020.But they did not want to just sell beer. They wanted to give their visitors a true Kentucky experience. And with Roger's love of Kentucky bourbon and his extensive collection of many bottles, it was quite easy to add a bourbon bar to accompany the brewery. Keeping with the Kentucky proud theme, the name was a given. Not sure how that fits into Kentucky? You'll have to listen to find out more. And not only do we talk about Gallant Fox, and while we do get a little deep into the woods about distribution and expansion, we have some fun with the Kentucky Derby and definitely the bourbon. When in Rome, so the saying goes. So, when in Kentucky we have to talk a bit about the bourbon, and Roger even gives out some tips on what bourbons to buy. Yes, his business is all about brewing beer, and at Gallant Fox, they brew some some damn good ones, but who doesn't love a good bourbon, just as much? Some even more. And think about this - Kentucky bourbon means barrels. Kentucky barrels translate beautifully into Kentucky beer. Roger's passion for what he does is evidenced through a smile you can hear and feel. It's palpable. Grab your favorite beer (or bourbon) and settle in for some good Kentucky conversation.Click here for the full show notes including a few pics, quotes, and more stories.Connect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. It all started with a hot springs swim beach in New Zealand and a headache like none he had ever had before, a full-time sailing dream put on hold, maybe to never happen again. Boats run aground more often than we all might think. Then there are other things that run aground symbolically. Things like engine problems causing you to be stuck in a marina for two months. Things like high winds causing 13 foot high waves resulting in a call to the Coast Guard.Full-time sailing can do that to you. And you just go with the flow. Buck up and learn from all of it. It's a part of life, running aground. But running aground because of a brain tumor? Now that is not a normal part of full-time sailing, let alone just life in general.Meet Danielle and ConorIf you remember, we spoke with Danielle and Conor back in late 2020 right before they were quitting their jobs and getting ready to move onto their sailboat in New Zealand. Click here to listen to their introductory story. They were so excited for the adventures that lay ahead. They had a business venture - documenting everything within their sailing lives, including beer of course, and their dog Pivo. They successfully started Sailing Pivo on YouTube, and to this day, sailing or not, it is still going strong. But then life as they knew it, after only a few short months sailing full-time, came to a screeching halt. From Full-time Sailing to a Brain TumorThis is their story of their struggles when it occurred for the first time before they knew what was going on, throughout the entire ordeal including brain surgery, as well as afterwards as they try to heal and build a new life. One that no longer involves full-time sailing, their mutual long-time dream. When it comes to a brain tumor, everything changes. Not just perspective on life, but who you are can change, too. Not because of the different perspectives but because the brain physiologically changes the way you think and react to life.We talk sailing and beer, of course. But more importantly, we delve deeper into how Danielle and Conor have coped with such a drastic shift in their lives. They are still learning how to grasp the severity of all that took place over the last year. And still learning how to adapt. Not only did Conor have a brain tumor, but they also had to transition from full-time sailing life to a "normal" life in a house with a "normal" job. And both of them are looking at this transition differently. But they are both also positive about their future. It may be different than what they were planning on, but really, when does life ever go how we expect it to go?Click here for the full show notes including a few pics, a few quotes, and more stories.Stay Connected with Sailing PivoDanielle found herself picking up her camera throughout everything. It was her journal. She documented their story with compassion, emotion, and integrity. Be sure to subscribe to Sailing Pivo on YouTube. There are no plans of that going away anytime soon. In fact, keep your eyes and ears open; I wouldn't be surprised if you see a documentary out there in the future.YouTubeFacebook InstagramPatreonYouTube Beer ReviewsConnect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Your openness towards us and each other on some emotional topics was much appreciated. For as much as we wish none of this ever happened to you, it has also made you even more inspirational (whether you like it or not), more adventurous (adventure is how you define it), and more experienced in life (whether you want it or not). We know that your dreams of sailing were cut short, but we are grateful that your spunk (Danielle), while keeping it real (Conor, maybe a bit too real, but we get it) are both intact, and you're still willing to share your experiences with us and the world. Welcome to Mikerphone Brewing where music and beer come together seamlessly. Located just outside of Chicago in Elk Grove Village, this brewery crafts all genres of beer alongside all genres of music.Welcome to the second episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenomenal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Mike Pallen from Mikerphone BrewingStarting out in the music and marketing world, Mike still always had an inkling towards brewing. His dad worked at Miller when Mike was young, and therefore, told him to not do beer, and to go to college instead.Mike listened but still got into home brewing in college and then graduated from that into home brewing out of his basement, ultimately making the jump to his own brewery, Mikerphone.Music and Beer And if brewing had a hold on him, music did even more. Combining his two passions together, music and beer, Mikerphone Brewing just outside of Chicago became real. But not by any traditional means. Well, sorta. He did start home brewing out of his basement. But on the other hand, he also won highly acclaimed awards for his beer before he even had a location. He did finally have a brewing business, but no home for said brewery. This is Mike's story of how he and his wife, Lisa, brought two passions together to create one. Join us as we chat music, beer, musical marketing, life and parenting skills, Malteurop malts (they're sexier than you think), and so much more. The Riney-Hiney Purity Law and MalörtPlus, you won't want to miss our announcement at the beginning about Beer Now, nor our hilarious (we think so) conversation about the riney-hiney purity law (made up word) but it deserves to be a little goofy, because we got a little goofy trying to pronounce it and decipher it. When you know you are an entrepreneur and plan on opening a business, and then fall in love with brewing and the community that surrounds it, there's nothing left to do, but open a brewery. And when your partner in life and business is a pilot, and your brewing style is to create small batch brews, again there's nothing left to do, but call said brewery, Pilot Brewing Company.Welcome to the first episode in our series of podcasts where we have partnered up with Malteurop Malting Company (MMC) to highlight some phenemonal craft breweries for American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22.Meet Rachael Hudson, the Pilot Behind the BreweryStarting in the service industry at 19 in a restaurant that served a lot of beers, Rachael quickly learned that she wanted to know more about craft beer and set her professional career in motion doing exactly that. Not only is this her story about rising up through the ranks, eventually opening up her own brewery in North Carolina, but this is also a story about education, community, and innovative practice in a world that needs all of the above.Join us as we chat about the story behind the name, the Cicerone Certification Program (Racheal is an Advanced Cicerone), Pilot's small batch system (Can you guess the name of it?), her love for community brewing, Pilot's Charity of the Month program, malts and ingredients, and much more. Pilot Brewing Company is truly a neighborhood brewery - the kind where everybody knows your name.Oh, and she has a podcast where she and her friend, Jen, "separate their listeners through this crazy world of beer knowledge to help them figure it out." The name? False Bottomed Girls. Do you get the pun? She's got great stories to tell behind the beer, but wait until you hear her response when asked about being a woman in the brewing industry. (I knew it was going to be snarky, and that's why I asked the question.) Welcome to Elevation Beer Company, where the people and the beer elevate you to your next level, whatever that may be. Sound a bit philosophical? Well, it is. Conversing over a pint (or two or three) of beer sparks the embers of all types of conversations. And that is one reason why we love the craft beer scene. And why we love Elevation Beer Company in Poncha Springs, Colorado, just outside of Salida. Not only is it the perfect stopover on your way back from Monarch Mountain (it's also a great local hangout), but it is a place that encourages community and conversation over a damn good beer.Meet Some Faces Behind Elevation Beer CompanyCarlin Walsh and Christian Koch, co-founders and owners of Elevation met through their wives when they were living in Denver. Christian was a plumber and had a passion for homebrewing. Carlin was working at a fire department and had a background in business and finance. Enjoying a summer evening at Jazz in the Park in Denver, they were also enjoying a homebrew from Christian called Little Mo Porter. And as often happens around a beer, an idea was born.Andy, Elevation's self-described Keg Orator (he really does everything, except brew beer and finances) is their oldest employee (you get to decide what that means), and has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to Elevation Beer Company, Salida, Colorado, life in the mountains, and music. “If you like heavy metal and beer, we could be friends and talk for hours about either, over both.” (Andy) Um, we did, and it was fun!A Conversation About EverythingWe sat down with Andy and Carlin to chat about Elevation Beer, of course - their beer is made for the mountains. From being on the water to the snow, they have a beer for you, for every season. But this podcast episode was truly a myriad of conversation. Beer, most definitely, but we also covered economics, sustainable housing and jobs, tourism, collaborations, music, and so much more. So, if you love sitting around with a bunch of friends conversing about everything over a pint of beer, we've got you covered. Have you ever dreamed of what it would be like to visit all of the breweries in one state? Paul Myhill, aka the Colorado Beer Guy, has done just that. He recently accomplished his goal of visiting every Colorado brewery and their associated taprooms throughout the state of Colorado.A Brewery Master - All of the Colorado Breweries - Over 400 of Them! Now among the ranks of an elite few of about 10 to 12 people that have accomplished this feat, Paul is now considered a Colorado Brewery Master. Not only that, but he's only one of five people that have done so when Colorado breweries hit the plus 400 mark. When he and a longtime friend realized they were on a consistent path of 10 breweries in 10 days which transitioned into 30 in 30 days, and so forth, Paul thought, "Why the hell not? Let's do all the Colorado breweries."It took him 18 months, and while he never set out to become famous from this - he did it simply from the desire to support Colorado craft - Paul has some stories to share, and they're not all about beer.Meet Paul Myhill, aka The Colorado Beer GuyFrom learning to love beer in England at a young age, this story isn't your typical beer lover's story. It all started in England from associating the smell of malts in elementary school to freedom to a 16-beer 16th birthday party in Texas to a 40 day beer fast, there's much more to this story than simply visiting all of Colorado breweries. Oh, and Paul has visited nearly 100 countries, too! Join us as we have an enlightening, inspiring, and down-to-earth story digging deeper into who the Colorado Beer Guy really is. While nobody can 100% guarantee that River North has brewed the strongest beer in Colorado, it's quite certain that it is one of them. Clocking in at just above 22%, it's a mighty big beer, with mighty big flavor. And for those of you that may not know River North, this big beer isn't their first rodeo. When you think of Baja, you probably conjure up images of the mighty Pacific or the serene waters of the Sea of Cortez. Palm trees are abundant. Beach combing and whale watching, Corona in hand, are the only things are on your must-do list. Keep all that, but ditch the Corona. There's a damn good craft beer scene in Baja, and we're here to start you out on your journey to Baja beer with the Ensenada craft beer scene.Ensenada, Baja CaliforniaEnsenada is about a two hour drive South of the San Ysidro Border Crossing in Tijuana and San Diego, along Mexico Highway 1. With around 400,000 people, the location and the size make it the perfect stop for all the necessities before heading further south along the Baja California peninsula. So stock up. Fill the tank, buy the groceries, exchange the money. And don't forget the beer.Ensenada Craft BeerEnsenada has a blossoming craft beer scene, and in truth, they've had a pretty good one for the past few years. Even if you are only planning on heading across the border for a short jaunt into Tijuana, take a bit longer, head a couple more hours south. Ensenada is worth the time. Being a popular cruise ship stop, it has plenty of shopping, restaurants, bars, and nightlife to keep you entertained for days. But you all know our entertainment...breweries. And Ensenada does not disappoint. With brewpubs, beer bars, and craft breweries all over the city, you'll find yourself staying here longer than you thought. Can you hear the music in the beer? Or maybe the better question is can you feel the music in the beer? Brewery owners are brilliant at creating taprooms and brewhouses that reflect their passions. Some of the best have personalities that inspire each customer to find their own perspective, allowing for unique expressions from every individual that encompasses the space. Ratio Beerworks is one of these breweries.Meet a Music Man...Or TwoOne of Denver's most loved breweries was born from this type of passion. Co-founders, Jason zumBrunnen and Scott Kaplan met in college at CU Boulder with a mutual love for both beer and music with both of them being involved with the punk rock genre. For those that know the punk rock scene, there's a lot of DIY to getting things done and playing the music you love wherever you can. That DIY work ethic has continued throughout both their lives and really came to fruition when Jason and Scott got "the band" back together again to open a brewery. In 2015, Ratio Beerworks opened their doors in Denver's River North District, but they were far from done.We had a chance to sit down for a moment with Jason at Ratio's media event promoting their second location in Southwest Denver. Taking over another beloved Denver brewery space, the now defunct Declaration Brewing on 2030 South Cherokee Street in the historic Overland neighborhood, Jason and Scott and the entire Ratio team have created a space that is clearly Ratio, but still with its own identity. It was that identity that we wanted to chat with Jason about, the one that was all about his passion for music. While we only chatted for about 10 minutes, we learned a lot about him and Ratio, and we hope you have a blast listening to his stories behind the music. Can You Hear the Music in the Fence? But we didn't stop there. Ratio has this undertone of music that many might miss, including their artwork throughout both locations. But it's one piece in particular, a fence actually, that is a true work of art...and music. We've always said that beer is about more than just the beer, and Charles Lefkowitz, a brilliant artist, chats with a group of us about the music behind the fence. So maybe the question isn't can you hear the music in the beer, maybe it's can you hear the music in the fence? What do you get when a brewer and a chef come together? Sounds like a joke told in a bar, right? Wayne and Laura are no joke. And the beers they create are no jokes, either. Specializing in high ABV beers, you might think they have set out to get you snockered. Well, their goal is just the opposite of that. It's time to appreciate the finer side of craft beer. It's time to experience it.Meet Wayne and Laura of Burns Family Artisanal AlesLife lessons from brewing beer is a real thing, especially when you meet Wayne Burns (aka High Octane Wayne) and Laura Worley from Burns Family Artisan Ales. Partners in both business and life, these two met over a beer that was supposed to be coffee and, as they say, the rest is history. We'll let them tell that tale.Growing Up Alongside the BeerBoth have been in the industry for decades. And with that comes growth and experience. Their knowledge and palates have grown up as they have have gotten older and wiser. It's not usually polite to talk about age, but these two understand that with age comes deeper connections and wisdom. And believe me, their connections and wisdom show in their brilliant beverages from low ABV to high ABV beer styles and everything in between. Laura is both a chef and a brewer. Combine that with her Certified Cicerone status and Wayne's exceptional knowledge of both the art and science behind brewing (he's been doing it since 1992), the beer from Burns Family Artisan Ales isn't just beer. It's an experience. At Burns You Experience Beer! And Wayne and Laura are experts in making it an experience. Coming from their early stages of not really liking beers - which in the late 80s/early 90s were all basically industrial light lagers - to realizing that beer doesn't have to be a means to an end - drinking whatever to get drunk. Beer, like wine and fine spirits, can be exquisite and flavorful, made to be sipped. Brewed to be celebrated for whatever it is you have deemed a celebration. Exceptional Beers Needed NowYou won't want just any beer when listening to Wayne and Laura tell their stories. You'll want to find something that celebrates flavors and wakes your senses up. Something that makes you pay attention to what is going on in the bottle and creates a desire to experience beer, not just drink it. After you've found that perfect beer (just pay a visit to Burns and pick up a bottle to go - no searching needed), prepare for a conversation that will leave you feeling wise beyond your years. You may even find out that getting older isn't quite so bad, especially if you have the beers that age with you, celebrating every moment of life along the way.For complete show notes click here.Connect with Burns:Burns Family Artisan Ales2505 West 2nd Avenue, Unit 13Denver, CO 80219Burns Family Artisan AlesFacebookInstagramConnect with Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Looking beyond the liquid, Jim and Jackie created the Craft Beer Marketing Awards (CBMAs) to recognize the art behind the beer. Craft beer lovers and marketing gurus themselves, it wasn't difficult to know that this was needed within the craft beer industry.Meet Jim and JackieStarting in the marketing field decades ago, Jim has long since been a fan of craft beer, and it made sense to jump into the craft beer marketing niche. Jackie has been in marketing for over ten years and has also been a long-time craft beer fan. When the two first met over a hops account, the magic of beer took over. Creating a plan on a napkin, the Craft Beer Marketing Awards were born, and as they say, "The rest is history!" Or maybe it's better to say, "They crushed it!"What are the Craft Beer Marketing Awards?Started in 2019, the Craft Beer Marketing Awards filled a gap within the craft beer awards world. The beer was awarded but what about everything else that makes this liquid our beloved beer?Think about it this way, when faced with a decision of what IPA to purchase out of a zillion different IPAs whether at the liquor store or a taproom, how do you decide which one to drink? Or as Jim likes to say, "What draws you into the beer when you're faced with the war at the cooler door?" That's what Jim and Jackie want to award, those designers, marketers, and creators that draw you into the beer or the brewery in the first place. The taprooms, the beer podcasts, the guerilla marketing campaigns, the unique flight presentations, the social media sites, the websites, the bottle and can designs, and so much more. The people behind the beer art crush it just like the brewers do, so let's award and recognize them for that...with a Crushie! How to EnterWhile you cannot yet nominate your favorite people or places, if you are involved in any kind of craft beer marketing, design, or creation, you can enter yourself or your brewery into one or more of the 40 categories of competition. Griffin Claw Brewing Company, located in Birmingham and Rochester Hills, Michigan, was founded in 2013. Focusing on all things craft, including beer, spirits, ciders, and food, they are also well aware that these are just the beginning. This is their story of a worldwide open-ended beer collaboration created to raise awareness for individuals with Down syndrome. A craft beer recipe, so to say, on how to affect change.Meet Pat Craddock“In 2015, my wife and I were blessed with our second son, Ian, who was born with Down syndrome, and our world was flipped upside-down.”Meet Pat Craddock, the genius behind the TRI-21 Project. While he officially holds the title of CFO at Griffin Claw, like many others in the industry, Pat wears many hats. So it wasn't a surprise to anyone when he came up with the idea to create a recipe and brew a beer to bring about awareness, acceptance, and funds to those with Down syndrome. What is Down Syndrome and the TRI-21 Project? There are three types of Down syndrome with the most common being Trisomy 21 (TRI-21). This is caused by an error in cell division resulting in an embryo with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. (National Down Syndrome Society)Inspired by Sierra Nevada's Resilience project, getting critical funds to those impacted by California's Camp Fire, Pat recently launched the TRI-21 Project in time for World Down Syndrome month in October with plans to continue up until World Down Syndrome Day on March 21, 2022.How Does the TRI-21 Project Work? The TRI-21 Project is simple. Any brewery can participate. Sign up. Download the recipe. Contact the vendors for discounts. Have a brew day. Download and print the artwork. Host a party to celebrate. Donate the funds. Finding support at GiGi's Playhouse when his son was born, Pat realized they would be an excellent source to receive funds raised from this project. Founded in the Midwest by a parent who needed support, Nancy Gianni created that support for herself and others, emphasizing global acceptance of Down syndrome. GiGi's is now located in over 50 locations across the U.S. and one in Mexico, offering a multitude of resources to anyone impacted by Down syndrome.Where's the Beer?Griffin Claw Brewing Project currently has their TRI-21 Double New England Hazy IPA available in both taprooms. With great respect for the environment, as well as the community, their efforts also expand into sustainability. We were honored to get to talk to Pat about Ian and the rest of his family, the TRI-21 Project, their sustainability practices, and so much more. When beer and Montana run in your blood and you are passionate about art and history, there's only one thing you can do. Open a Montana beer and brewery museum. And that is exactly what Steve "Bubs" Lozar did.Meet Steve "Bubs" LozarHis great grandfather was the first in his family to come to Montana from Slovenia in 1887, and as they say, the rest is history. Of course, there's more to it than that, but basically, that's what started it all. Beer has always been a part of Bubs' family. Dare I say, that it's genetic? Bubs might agree. But before he opened the Montana Beer and Brewery Museum, his creative side got him into education and then screen printing, which he still practices today. I'll let him tell you more about that story.U.S. Beer HistoryBeer history in Montana, like many states, goes back to the mining days, when railroads were being built and towns were popping up everywhere to support the workers that were coming by the droves to make money. Many of these workers were from different countries and different cultures, and they needed something that felt like home. Beer feels like home, and drinking one after a hard day's work with people that understood you was just about as important as family. Because of this, every ethnic group had its own brewery. A place to come home to. A community you belonged to. Bubs knew this from the beginning. It was built into his family, so when the opportunity arose for him to take possession of his great grandfather's old brewery memorabilia and the bartop itself, he jumped on it. Having been collecting breweriana for years, starting with old signs, cans, and bottles, he had to find a place to keep it all. And not just store it but display it.Housed above his screen printing shop in Polson, Montana, there's not a sign announcing it. But if you know it's there, and he happens to be around, stop on by. Bubs would love to share a beer or two with you while swapping stories about the magnificent history of beer and how it builds community, even today.Grab a beer, sit back, and be prepared to be transported back into a history of family and craft beer that can only be told by Bubs. For complete show notes and pictures, click here.Connect With Us:The Craft Beer Travel & Adventure Podcast is hosted by Living a Stout Life, where we share stories, community, and resources for all your craft beer travel and adventure lifestyle needs. We would absolutely love it if you subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. Old Dominick Distillery dates back to the late 1800s and was founded by Domenico Canale, an Italian immigrant. Having family in Memphis, with origins in the fruit business, Canale headed to Tennessee to join the business. Realizing he'd rather make whiskey instead of selling fruit, Old Dominick, the whiskey, was born. Three days before Prohibition, Canale passed away, and whiskey production and sales ceased.Today, Canale's dream has been revived, and we were fortunate to be able to chat with Alex Castle, Master Distiller at the now very much alive and vibrant Old Dominick Distillery. Her story takes into account the rich history of the Canale family while crafting a future in distilling that will continue traditions while still pushing the boundaries.Meet Alex Castle, Master Distiller at Old Dominick DistilleryAlex Castle became the Master Distiller and an integral part of the Canale venture in 2015 when the design process for Old Dominick Distillery began to take shape. Production started in 2016, and the doors finally opened in 2017, giving downtown Memphis its first distillery to make whiskey since before Prohibition.Spending most of her childhood wanting to be a marine biologist, Alex wasn't sure what to do when in high school she found out that she had no interest in biology. She fondly looks back at that defining moment in her life, realizing at the age of 14 she may have already had her mid-life crisis.Instead, she fell in love with physics, chemistry, and calculus, resulting in her attending the University of Kentucky to study chemical engineering. And thankfully, for spirit lovers everywhere, following advice from her mom, she became a master distiller.Bourbon is no longer just your Grandpa's drink. As a distiller for Old Dominick, not only is Alex crafting age-old, traditional spirits, she's innovating within those traditions. Ages are shifting within the bourbon movement, and we are seeing an increased diversity in consumer palates. Alex is an expert at crafting the spirits we desire when we gather around a table with friends, and that is her main passion for distilling, creating connections and building community.Chatting with Alex was like sitting back with an old friend around a cozy fireplace sipping on excellent bourbon. It was easy, fun, and enlightening. Since her goal is to bring people together over a good drink, I would say she has achieved that goal, both in the distillery and far beyond the walls that started it all. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed talking with her.
