parkrun, which started as a small, informal 5K run with just 13 participants in Bushy Park, London, in 2004, has grown into a global phenomenon with over 10 million runners and 2600 parkruns. Its founder, South African born, Paul Sinton-Hewitt grew up in Potchefstroom. From only 26 runners and 3 volunteers at the first run, parkrun has flourished, particularly in South Africa, where more than a million of its members are based. Bruce Fordyce, the legendary South African ultra-marathon runner, is one of the key figures behind parkrun's success. In an interview with BizNews, Fordyce shared that he plans to participate in his 549th parkrun this weekend, despite having recently undergone knee replacement surgery. parkrun started he says that South Africans are drawn to the 5-kilometer parkrun due to its safety, the majority of runners are women. Fordyce says participants enjoy adding new runs to their totals, which he describes as “stamp collecting on steroids,” as they try to add more destinations to their list.

In the months leading up to D-Day, Eisenhower's attention was in relentless demand, whether he was negotiating, rallying troops, or solving crises from his headquarters in Bushy Park, London. He projected optimism outwardly but resisted it inwardly. The day of the invasion, he gave the most rousing speech of his life, exhorting the tens of thousands of young men of the “Great Crusade” ahead of them. Then in a fleeting moment of quiet, he wrote out a draft of a resignation letter in case the invasion failed.Outwardly, Eisenhower was a genial cypher. He was liked by all and seemed to make success inevitable. Inwardly, he was near constantly abuzz with brilliance, exhaustion, will, frustration, and the acute awareness that failure was always a possibility. The D-Day landing  sees him at this unique, extraordinarily consequential moment, for D-Day would not only go down as one of the most important military successes in history but would also forge a modern George Washington. To explore this story, we are joined with today's guest, Michel Paradis, author of “The Light of Battle.” We see how Ike masterminded D-Day, wielding his unique leadership skills to save Europe and shape the course of history.

A Clare addiction treatment centre is encouraging people to engage in an open dialogue around alcohol use this week. With Alcohol Awareness Week now underway, Drinkaware has launched an awareness campaign called 'Know the Low' to highlight the importance of adhering to the HSE Low-Risk Weekly Guidelines. Research shows just 3% of adults are aware of these guidelines, which permit women less than 11 standards drinks and men less than 17 standard drinks spread out over the week, with at least two alcohol free-days. Deputy Manager at Bushypark Addiction Treatment Centre Meadhbh Firmino da Silva Santos insists it's important people know their limits and think critically about their reasons for drinking.

During the Second World War, Bushy Park was home to a sprawling military base. This is where General Dwight D. Eisenhower came to work on a top-secret plan called ‘Operation Overlord'.  On 6 June 1944, after months of preparation, the plan was ready – 156,000 Allied troops invaded Normandy, some landing on the beaches and others arriving by air. Now known as D-Day, this event ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany.  And so much of it was planned right here in the park. We, as always start with the exploration of what makes her feel soulful as we're treated to her experience of her local park, and her ‘coming home' place.‘I know it's part of me, part of my heart. I literally well-up when I go into Bushy Park'. Within our conversation Carey admits how exercise has worked for and against her. How she ran herself into the ground, resulting in numerous operations on her knees and ovaries, but which led her to really look at life more deeply, and in particular her relationship with food. Following an enlightening discovery of what was in her body, from metals to toxins, she vowed to change her life.A diet of nourishing food, but also a re-address of how she nurtured herself, she started doing yoga and finding ways of being calm and centred. From this place she was able to navigate the breakdown of her marriage, and choose big changes in her life from leaving a career as a PE teacher, to HR consultant and into coaching where she found, this was really what she does in life naturally, and wanted to do with the rest of her life.We love the final question when she relates her favourite food dish to her personality. We love how she shares her darkest days, and her own struggles with kindness and trusting others to be there for her, and not just go out alone. How she needs her community, as much as they need her. It's a beautiful exchange of what it means to be human, and how we are all continuously moving through stages, clearing the way for something new.Whoever works with Carey, be it coaching or receiving her care as she holds masterclasses and teachings with businesses and teenagers, they're in for a nourishing treat. To find out more about Carey and her work visit Soulhub or Eat, Nourish, Flourish.Thank you for taking the time to listen. We spoke to track and middle-distance runner Mo Hashi about how to get your timings just right during a tempo run with him at Bushy Park. He may not think it, but Mo Hashi is fast, the track and middle-distance runner, who uses his spare time to compete in competitions up and down the country, has a current 5K PB at 14 minutes 35. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com About a year ago, Big Daddy Kane switched from a two-wheel Harley Ultra Limited to a Harley Tri-Glide trike. He was hoping that the trike would better serve his needs due to a few underlying medical issues. Well, there's only one way to find out, and that's to get a trike and ride the heck out of it. In episode 210 of the podcast, we had a great time discussing trikes and had another Haley Tri-glide rider present, Big Daddy Kane's dad. Take a listen! LAB-210-Why He Switched to a Harley-Davidson Trike & Real Biker Talk-Special Guest Rick Kane Sr. Big Daddy rode the heck out of his Harley trike over the past year. Most recently, he rode it 3200 miles during a 9-day trip to Sturgis 2020, the 80th Anniversary. He was also riding with his passenger during the trip and riding in our larger group of about 12 motorcycles.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Big Daddy started experiencing some issues as a trike obviously handles differently than a two-wheel motorcycle. There is a lot more pressure on your arms and wrists as you are not leaning but turning the bars through corners. You use your arms a lot more and he was experiencing arm fatigue and wrist pain due to a medical issue. He also found it difficult at times to keep up with the group, both while passing cars and during corners. Both are expected on a trike as you can't take corners as quickly and the heavier trike will not get up and go as fast while passing as a two-wheel Harley will.  CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! There are many other things you should know if you're considering a Harley trike. With that said, Big Daddy switched because of some particular issues he was having, which others may not have. The trike is certainly perfect for many riders out there. Big Daddy is just sharing his personal experiences and journey while trying a trike during this episode, so take a listen.  Ultimately, Big Daddy traded in his Harley trike during Sturgis at Black Hills Harley-Davidson and left with a 2020 Harley Ultra Limited and he's loving it! That, along with many other things will be seen in my Sturgis 2020 documentary film when it's released! NEW FREE VIDEO RELEASED: Surprise Visit to the Law Abiding Biker Motorcycle Store? There are so many unique backgrounds and life stories within the community. I love interviewing bikers and sharing their stories and experiences as I did so in this episode.  I had the pleasure of interviewing Patron Member Terry McDonough of Medford, Oregon. We had such a good time that we split the conversation into a two-part podcast series, so make sure you listen to part 1 and part 2 in order, so it all makes sense.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Terry is another great example of the supportive biker community that surrounds Law Abiding Biker™ Media. He supports us financially as a Patron Member so we can continue to help, educate, entertain, and inspire as many bikes as we can worldwide. There are many benefits to becoming a Patron Member and one of them is being able to attend ride and meetup events, such as Terry did in Sturgis this year. Terry has some unique skills having worked with sheet metal for years. He asked me why I hadn't put sheet metal tops on the workbenches in the Law Abiding Biker Shop. He noticed in the videos on our YouTube channel that we have wood tops. During our conversation, he offered to shape and create sheet metal tops for the workbenches and I was humbled by the offer, to say the least.  CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! So, this fall Terry came all the way up from Medford, Oregon to Yakima, Washington where the Law Abiding Biker Media Shop and Studio are located. This is a 7 hr drive and he simply measured the workbenches but we got to hang out and talk.  Weeks later, I drove to Medford, Oregon to Terry's sheet metalworking shop and filmed the process of him bending and creating the bench tops. I will be releasing a full documentary film on the entire process, so make sure you're subscribed to the YouTube Channel, so you know when it releases.  Last, Terry drove back up to the shop with the metal workbench tops and installed them. Wow, they look great! And this was all donated by Terry. I'm am so grateful and humbled by his kindness. Of course, while I had him in the studio, we sat down and did a couple of podcast episodes. Not only is Terry good with sheet metal but he has a ton of experience with motorcycles. I had to chuckle the other day as I was putting together my fall containers. The first thing I do when I transition from one season to another, is determine which plants are salvageable - the ones that have enough gas to go another season. One of my pots ended up being a bit of a hodgepodge. I call it my "Must Go" Container in honor of my husband's Great Aunt Lena.  Here's the backstory: Great Aunt Lena would babysit my husband and his siblings when they were little. She was helping out my in-laws while they were both at work and she was famous for making a casserole at the end of the week she called "Must Go" hotdish.  Phil's dad used to tell how one particular Must Go hotdish was extra memorable because when he was dishing himself up a plate, he pulled out an intact piece of pizza out of the depths of this hotdish; which no doubt was combined with a can of cream of mushroom soup.   In any case, my "Must Go" container ended up being a bit of an homage to Great Aunt Lena; individually, the plants looked fine. But, put together, the effect was jumbled - a "Must Go" container if ever there was one. I'll have to redo it this weekend.     Brevities #OTD  Today is the birthday of the English gardener, designer, and nurseryman Henry Wise who was born on this day in 1653. One can't mention Henry Wise without talking about George London. The two worked together on gardens throughout England. The partnership began when Wise was a student of London.  When Wise came of age, he became London's partner at the Brompton Park nurseries. Wise was one of the greatest gardeners and plantsmen of his time. Together, he and London became THE designers to work for over two decades until London died in 1714.  Wise is remembered for being the gardener for Queen Anne, although he also managed the royal gardens during the reigns of William III and George I as well. London and Wise designed formal baroque gardens. Think - box hedges, gravel walk ways, beautiful statuary and magnificent fountains. Wise laid out the stunning avenue of Chestnut trees in England's Bushy Park as well as the walled kitchen garden made for the Duke of Marlborough in Blenheim which thrills visitors still today.     #OTD   Today is the birthday of the Arnold Arboretum taxonomist and dendrologist Alfred Rehder who was born on this day in 1863.  A dendrologist studies trees and Rehder was the top dendrologist of his generation. Rehder learned about horticulture from his father who was an amateur gardener.  He worked at a number of botanical gardens around Germany.  At the turn of the 20th century, Rehder was sent to the US to study American grapes - which were resistant to phylloxera - the disease that was caused by aphids and that was threatening to obliterate wine production in Europe. There was no better place for Rehder to conduct his research than Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. It was a fortuitous assignment for Rehder who ended up meeting the director of the Arboretum - Charles Sprague Sargent. Sargent recognized Rehder's intelligence and diligence. He persuaded him to stay on and gave him the tremendous assignment of compiling a bibliography of everything written about woody plants published before 1900.  It resulted in a five-volume, 3,789-page work.  Rehder accomplished much during his time at Harvard. He launched a quarterly botanical publication known as the Journal of the Arnold Arboretum and he came up with a system to identify geographic zones based on the relationship between temperature and the hardiness of specific plants. Rehder's work helped establish what we know as the USDA Hardiness zone maps.       #OTD   Today is the birthday of Canada’s first professional woman plant breeder - a woman called the “dean of hybridists” and the “Grand Lady of Canadian Horticulture" - Isabella Preston, who was born on this day in 1881. Vita Sackville-West once acknowledged, "I must confess I don't know anything about Miss Isabella Prestonof Ottawa. . ." Preston's name had become famous as the result of her lily hybrids. She bred the renowned George C. Creelman hybrid lily in 1919.  Vita would have loved Preston's practical and hard-won advice. When a colleague asked Preston what she should do with her rock garden, Preston's advice was rather fascinating: “Use every bit of rock – Don’t be afraid of it. Plant between, atop or along side. Presently, you will be convinced that flowers need near them the harsh stability of stone.”  Preston was a self-taught plant hybridizer. In 1920 she joined the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. For almost three decades, she endeavored to create more blooms on more disease-resistant plants.  She created over 200 cultivars of six different plants including lilacs, lilies, crab apples, columbine, Siberian iris and roses. Preston Lilacs are named in her honor. Preston received many honors for her work.      Unearthed Words "She had only to stand in the orchard, to put her hand on a little crab tree and look up at the apples, to make you feel the goodness of planting and tending and harvesting at last." - Willa Cather "September fattens on vines.  Roses flake from the wall.  The smoke of harmless fires drifts to my eyes.  This is plenty. This is more than enough."  - Geoffrey Hill, September Song     Today's book recommendation: Gardener's Guide to Compact Plants - Jessica Walliser   With space becoming a premium for urban gardens and for gardeners who want to keep their gardens more manageable, compact plants are the perfect solution. One of my favorite things about this book are the amazon options for edible plants that work in small spaces. Incorporating edibles into little spaces in your garden allows you to maximize your gardens productivity and your return on investment. In addition to edibles, Jessica offers suggestions for compact flowering and fruiting trees, as well as compact shrubs, evergreens, and perennials. Plus, Jessica shares what she calls, "The Magic 7 Maintenance Tasks" - little tips for creating a successful garden one task at a time.    Today's Garden Chore Now is the time to get your order together for spring bulbs. Whether you use them for planting or forcing during the winter, you will get the best selection if you order early.  Once you get them, make sure you don't plant them until the weather turns colder later in the fall.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart On this day in 1938, Charles Joseph Sauriol wrote in his journal. He wrote about a common occurrence in gardens; plants growing together. He wrote: "[I] set out plantations of Thyme, Rosemary, Tarragon, Mint, Caraway, in the Wild Flower garden which now becomes a herb garden as well. This is my answer to keeping the weeds down…. My studies converge so why not the plants?"      Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

"Somewhere in peoples DNA is a desire for them to be part of a community"Parkrun began 14 years ago, with a simple concept: a free five-kilometre time-trial around Bushy Park, south west London. It was a low-key, unofficial affair with socialising at its heart. Now over 5 million people across 20 countries have registered for the event! But why has it become so popular? Nick Pearson, Chief Executive of Parkrun and guest on this week’s Feel Better, Live More podcast, explains why. He believes that community is a basic human need that has been squeezed out by our lifestyles. We all crave community and that is what Parkrun is all about. It is inclusive and it doesn’t matter whether you run, jog or walk – there is always someone behind you. Even if you can’t run, you can volunteer, which can be even more beneficial than running for your social wellbeing and confidence. In fact, because of its success in making movement accessible to all, the Royal College of General Practitioners has partnered with Parkrun to promote the wellbeing of its staff and patients. Parkrun really is more than a health movement – it is a social movement that makes you feel part of your local community. It has transformed my weekends.
